None of these are Shaker. What the big manufacturers make isn't Shaker. It's a bullshit method of stealing an old, classic style name for el-cheapo manufacturing techniques. Which of the Shaker aesthetic do they violate? Most of them. No applied metal hardware. Shaker uses hand-turned wooden handles. No plywood. All natural wood. No veneers. No fancy routed profiles on the rails and styles. Those hard-to-clean nooks-and-crannies?! Why do you think the Shakers made things so simply styled? SO THEY WOULD BE EASY TO CLEAN! Where you all stand on 'Shaker' vs 'No Shaker' is bullshit because this ain't Shaker.

I enjoy watching your videos. I think I have learnt something about kitchen design which will be helpful when building my dream home. However, although it seems intuitive to put cooking oils, herbs, and spices by the stove, these are sensitive to heat, which can cause deterioration. I would place them in the pantry which will be dark and cool

Liz, could you do a video on lighting a living room? I have a small living room in an 80 year old house with only two windows that don’t get much light because of trees. There is no built in lighting in the room. I’d like to add at least some down lights (can lights) because the room is so dark. (Easy atticOne concern is that if the lights are too far from the walls they won’t illuminate the full room, but if they are even a little close to the wall, they’ll be almost above the heads of people siting on the couch. And that’s a bad look. Not sure how to handle this problem. I don’t want guests to look like they’re in a spotlight!

Another excellent video, Liz! You're right...knowing the depth is so important. We thought we wanted a microwave hidden behind a cabinet front, but we realized most microwaves are at least 18" in depth and won't be flush with typical 12" depth uppers. We don't want to do a microwave with trim bc once the microwave breaks we'd have to find a replacement that fits perfectly. I guess we could do an appliance garage in the corner and "hide" it there...hmmm, decisions, decisions.

OK. I usually agree with most everything you say and you give me great things to think about, but..... I'm 5 feet tall. Without a stool, I can't reach above my fridge other than barely on the edge when I'm on my toes. 😅 I'm lucky if I can reach the 2nd shelf in any upper cabinets to begin with. But please please please - if you can work it into a video or something, tell me how far an island with seating should be from stairs. Everyone mentions everything but stairs. I have a tri-level that we inherited. I'm probably going to wind up interrupting the walkway from the front door to the back sliding doors, which I'm not sure is ideal. Otherwise, I'm going to have to get the smallest refrigerator ever. A peninsula gives me the same issues. There are stairs going up and then stairs going down and a relatively small area before the sliding doors. The kitchen is on the opposite side of the room, and I can't seem to make it fit. I'm trying to have open concept since combined it will be essentially 38' x 17' and I HATE the idea of the sink in the island or a peninsula. I think it looks dumb to put a cooktop in an island because of the hood, but I would find that more useful. Window placement forces the sink and dishwasher placement but doesn't leave enough room to do a fridge next to it with space for dishes before you run into the sliding door. Ugh.

Great points and great ideas. Storage above fridge for trays etc is perfect. Here's another point, either have in hand or are 100% certain on appliances prior to design, we had to totally change plans after buying ex display matching fridge and freezers for a huge discount. We are remodelling a G shape kitchen, fridge, freezer, and wall ovens running into a 45 degree corner pantry. Plaster down from 9 ft ceiling to meet cabinets at 8 ft and no above counter cabinets for the remaining U shape and apart from the bins under the sink, exclusively drawers! Just trying to work out whether a bulkhead along the hotplate wall will add or take away from the design.
