Lighting Choices: Are You Getting the Best Layout and Fixtures for Your Home?
I am so grateful for this podcast.
Wonderful video! Thanks! I do have a question about tiling the area where the hood sits. Current I don’t have one, my question is do I tile before or after one is installed?
🙏Usually, it’s after.
Nice stuff looking forward to keep educating myself with your videos
Do you recommend hanging the dining room pendant higher than you would with a standard ceiling? We will have 14' celiings over the dining table. A lot of blogs say adding 3" for every additional foot of ceiling height over 8'
That sounds like crazy talk to me 🤪 Do you eat at a higher elevation? The light is meant to light up the food and people, right?
What I think stands out about your channel as opposed to watching HGTV is that you are all about function and personalizing your home to your own way of life. When you watch the design channels, they’re very big on hitting the trends or making a home flip.
I’m far from trendy 🤣 but you’re so right. It’s your home, not tv set. When we confuse entertainment with practical day to day, we get a lifetime of regret!
I watch ur vids again n again n learn keep correcting my plans before it's finalised in concrete. U help more than u know. My discussions with architects turn sour cz they are set in their ways, won't change lighting ,won't accommodate ur thoughts n learnings n act like they know the best. I might not have a degree but I've spent 10000 hrs researching but gets no credit. Deeply frustrating
Before this video, I somehow had a blindspot for the top of the refrigerator and how to make practical use of it. Currently I live in an apartment that has “storage” (doors) in over the refrigerator. Yeah, not useful: even though I’m 6 feet tall with fairly long arms, the top of the refrigerator currently has stuff stacked on there: even if they didn’t block the doors, those stupid doors really aren’t accessible due to human ergonomics, and is wasted space. But standing a bunch of pans on edge? A much more effective use of space! I also ended up unexpectedly acquiring a condo that is 3 timezones away, with… ineffective, very poorly-designed kitchen area and cabinetry to match. It is, by far, the worst design element of the condo: the bathroom situation is just worn out but at least the general layout makes sense. I’m looking at renting out the condo. I’d like to make sure it’s an easier sell for the intended rent, and who knows, I may end up living in it in the relatively near future. I like to cook and bake. Thus, I’m looking at how to most effectively make use of the space. I may still go with the lazy susans in the corners because of extreme space constraints.
Thank you thank you. I have a 1905 house with a small closet and deep return walls and your ideas of putting rods at the end was brilliant. I have hated my closet but now I'm very excited to redesign it❤
You do offer any solutions, just what not to do…Not helpful…
Well, I did state that at the start. 🤔
Nope. No skinny for me. I think it looks cheap and unfinished... like it was an afterthought. I've always loved just the shaker. I feel that it's timeless and they've been around for more than 20 years.
So true! I tried to use it in my Reno but it just didn’t work for me, so old faithful it is!
that's a good tip about the wall oven next to fridge, stove is pretty obvious, if there is a wood panel between the oven and built-in fridge should be ok though?
The wood will help to insulate the heat! Should be fine unless you cook 24/7🤣🙏
open shelf below the (standard size) upper cabinet is the best kitchen idea I have seen in a LONG time!
It’s a great alternative for not much extra💰
Thank you so much. You’re video is very helpful to me.
Thank you so much! I am watching this for a large hallway with vaulted ceiling that has a "bo_b" light right now. Big decision as we only want to replace it once! Anyway...will work on my bad recessed lights in kitchen later!
I’ll be here!💡👩🎨
Brilliant video, simply brilliant. Thanks!
Glad it helped!🙏 there’s plenty more 🎥
Just look at the efficiency of 1950s kitchens and take notes. Instead of pullout tracks for th egarbage, maybe that uses polyurathane or rubberized wheels to hold the weight, or a custom counter that allows for scraps from prep to be dropped down from the countertop through a cutout.
I imagine my kids taking the pail out and not putting it back regularly 🤣🧽🫧
What about tiling the side of the cabinet? The counter & cabinet not being aligned is so annoying
Don’t do that
Thank you for this! I’m starting to design an island. I would love to hear the cons of a 2 tier island? We have plenty of space, so the bar area can be quite deep if needed. It seems very practical, especially since it is open to the entire living space. Would love to hear!
I had one and loved it! It accommodated all heights, hid the mess from the dining room and gave separation from cooking to eating and social zones. The con was the ability to spread out on a single big surface for 🍕 making and buffet type parties. The bar height is also difficult for older parents guests to sit at. If you’ve got plenty of space, see if you can give yourself those spaces you need around the kitchen!
Liz, one of your videos showed up in a search and one hour later I’m exclusively on your channel 😅 Feels a bit stalkery now that I mention it 😂 Great content! Thank you for the education ❤ Your content is to the point, clear, coming from somebody who works in the kitchen and understands the room’s needs and most importantly, your tips are about function and having an easier time in an actually “lived in” home ❤ I was looking for a video of pros and cons for having the sink in the kitchen island. If you ever run out of content ideas, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this! To be honest I’m asking from the point of view of someone who’s going to cook, entertain and parent sometimes in the future 😅 Thanks again for the great content! ❤
I’m sure I’ve talked about this in several videos. Strong opinions. I’m a sink in the island 🏝️ girl when possible. Even if it’s just a prep for washing dishes and keeping 👀 on the other side🤣😇. I won’t have one in my next island, but my view is elsewhere. There’s no right answer👩🎨🤪
@@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa as always it depends 😂 Thanks a lot for your reply ❤
@iuliacornea824 I forgot DALS too.
Is it possible to make changes like this to an existing home? We like our home, interest rate is good, but layout no longer serves us with kids. It has a lot of unused sqft, and I would like to see what can be done to fix that.
Anything’s possible! Decide what changes might improve the flow and use of the space, get a few contractors to give you some ideas and expert eyes about what’s possible/expensive as far as moving walls etc. Then, we chat!👩🎨
I hate recessed lights. The downlight makes people look scary, wrinkled, and older.
Then it’s probably a poorly placed light. That’s why I’m here!💡👩🎨
I agree. I don’t care how they are placed. I think recessed lights are ugly and I can’t imagine ever using them when there are upper cabinets or shelves that could have task lighting installed underneath or where simple pendants could be placed from the ceiling. I suppose if the kitchen is huge or you have very low ceilings you might need them, but I’ve never had or wanted a kitchen that large.
Thank you, Liz! Great info as always. Lighting up a home right is always money well spent. There's not enough information out there to help homeowners know what options exist!
I can’t wait to show off Elco Lighting’s product offerings in my next video! They fit the bill for what I look for in great recessed lights 💡🙏
Great advice, many thanks Liz!
Anytime!🙏👩🎨
Why should your face be green unless you're on 'Wicked' 😂😂 I love your humor and advice!
🧙
Just starting out to build cabinets commercially and your videos have been very informative.
There’s more!🎥🙏
I don’t have a ceiling soffit in the kitchen I have an antique house with stone ceiling and arches, how can I incorporate proper lighting (especially task lighting on the island) around all this architectural ceiling is driving me crazy.
Is there electrical wiring up there? A center fixture that could be converted to a track for adjustable heads? Rechargeable lamps on counters if no other options or sconces with articulating arms to aim light. There are options, you just gotta think outside the 📦
I forgot! Rechargeable under cabinet lights from Amazon kept me in some 💡 while I waiting for the renovation to start! Inexpensive and bright enough addition to the work surface!
@@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa Thank you for this I check them out. My problem is the ceiling as under the top cupboards we are doing an outlet for task light. Most probably I have to work with pendents from the ceiling.
I have a tonne of recesses lights without diffusers and unfortunately my partner loves the big light; I’m happy to chop my fingers off before it comes to that. Would buying diffuser gels help to make them less oppressive?
What’s a diffuser gel? But, anything that’s softens the light will help!
@ maybe it’s a Canadian or British term 🤷♂️. Gels are the things that you put over lights on a stage to change their colour or other properties.
Ah yes! Like a colored screen?. I know a few brands that offer options. Check out @elcolighting for the koto line. They have a grid insert, some colors and I’d imagine a diffuser type option.
@ thanks 🙇♂️
9:26 I really wish more companies would come out with dim-to-warm options that top out at 3500K. I mostly see them top at 3000K (too warm for a kitchen, especially with non-bright white walls) or 4000K (too cold for my preference for most rooms). The only one I've found is out of my league on pricing. Maybe they'll start to make the kelvin top end and bottom end selectable in the future. Here's hoping.
With a human centric light, you’d get it all! The koto version of HCL runs around $120 with all the parts. If it’s for a few well chosen spots in the kitchen, you can still be mindful of your budget…elsewhere!
Lmao at the “any takers” !
Funny, it’s still available 🤔
Great video! Thanks now I’m probably spending more to remove my sophists raising my cabinets up and adding a facia board with crown! I love that idea!
great video! I remodeled my small place (with a high sloped ceiling in the front room) and my contractor just wanted to go to home depot and get the flat standard throwaway LED lights... no thank you... I ended up at the lighting store and got the entra 3 inch adjustable lights by element for the sloped ceiling and nora lights for the rest of my standard ceiling recessed lights. all on smart dimmer switches... I am able to set scenes (for when I walk in the door, when I want a chill vibe, when I am watching TV, etc.) and control everything by either voice, an app on my phone or a switch. so convenient! I'm adding some ambient table and floor lights and will get a module to add those to the smart light system too. after going through this process, I agree, lighting is everything! thanks again for all the great info in your videos.
@@pecanthecat those are great choices! Which system did you use?
@@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa Lutron dimmer switches and Alexa/Google home. So I can ask Alexa to set scenes I programmed or I can go into the Lutron app on my phone to choose a scene. :-)
@ perfect!
I agree with you on many of your concerns. But there are no solutions to any of these problems. There are only trade-offs. I think the corner drawers are the best way to go. But the trade off is the amount of space you lose. I think the blind corner cabinet is the most space saving. But you almost always have to get down on hands and knees to get to the back. I wish people were presented with the "solutions" on both sides. Let people choose for themselves.
Noted. Solutions👩🎨
Great information Liz I like a in between not too amber and not too white. Too white and I get flares coming off the light.
Me too! 3000-3500 is my sweet spot!💡
Bahaha this is awesome. Good tips!
Glad you liked it!🙏
For my new kitchen, I have NONE. I used suspended H-track and a combination of aimable cans and pendants, along with LOTs of under-cabinet lighting (all I use the majority of the time, plus the pendants over the island). But I have a VERY modern kitchen, that would not work as well in a traditionally-styled kitchen. I like 3500K, but I agree that is personal preference. Everything is on dimmers.
Sounds perfect! I love the flexibility of the track!
@@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa NOT having to decide exactly where to put things was a huge relief, and I changed out and moved a few around after I lived with it for a while.
You are so great to watch. I had absolutely no need for this video but I watched the entire thing because you made it so interesting and fun.
That’s wonderful! I try
I have a double lazy Susan corner cabinet in the bottom and have had it for many years. Works great, and I love it. I also have an upper corner cabinet, and I put a lazy Susan in it that filled up the space, I love it. There are two tip outs in front of my sinks. Have had them at least 20 years. They are fantastic. Love the drawers behind the doors. I am not so lazy that I can't open doors, pull out drawers, push drawers back in and close doors.
Good for you! Most clients have less success👩🎨
Clear space between 16" oc studs is 14.5".
The math police 👮🤣
Awesome video!
Aww, go on! Really, go on, watch more🎥👩🎨🙏
I wish I'd known you all my life! Thankyou for all this info!!
Very good video. I was about to add the wafer lights to my dining room, as my chandelier does give much lighting. You didn't mention the gimbal lighting which also can be directional. Was curious what you thought about those.
I love options so they are a favorite!💡
I put glassware in a big beautiful drawer adjacent to the dishwasher. So I can have that big beautiful window. 😊
Did you use a peg board or some system to keep them from clanking?
great video
There’s more…🎥🤣🙏
Bain of my life is no room behind the tub, even if shifted over by 4 inches this would be so helpful. Thanks for crystallising this problem , job for hubby .
Sorry for the honey dos 🤣
Hi ma'am. You give amazing advice! Im so happy i found you! Where can i buy one of those small light that you used to swtich from all the difference color tones?
That’s the module for the koto recessed lights from elcolighting.com.
Is there a video of a closet this size in which the hanging bars have been moved as suggested successfully?
Not this one. But I did make over a small walk in. Similar principles apply! ruclips.net/video/jvpqlorLPh8/видео.html
I hate LED lights! They cast dark shadows. They are literally strobe lights! I would totally believe that they damage our health.
This plan is so bad! So many awkward corners and wasted space!
Most of them need work!
We just moved into an existing house and I am overwhelmed with the closet. I have tried the free designer apps but I have a long window and also a door with a water heater for the spa tub. I can’t find or don’t know how to add these things to the designs that I’ve tried. Your videos help a lot though. 😊
Draw it up the old fashioned way ✏️. It gets the job done to visualize the space and what’s possible. The door sounds like a great place for a mirror or hooks?
Is there a way to change the corner cabinet because mine is tearing up my drawers?
Change it out? 🤔 might involve a new counter.
