I used to love our kitchen layout plans ,but my husband recently decided he hated how opened the kitchen was to the living room and has added a wall with an arched entrance. This change has completely eliminated my kitchen island because there will not be enough clearance space 😢. I enjoyed the video so much❤

Got that notification of a new video and grabbed my kitchen plan ! Already knew it was going to be good ! Checked that triangle, checked that island spacing. ✅✅ and double check!

Good grief on these islands going in with inadequate clearance!!! So glad you are talking about that! Ovens for sure need to swap sides with frig:-)
If the frig moved to the left of entry, jammed against a door opening/pathway, it's not great either though. We have that situation and it is difficult to pass by. If possible that opening needs to shift to the right if the frig is moved and the first 1-1.5' cut off the island length.
It is not clear if this is a new build or reno in an existing footprint that won't change.
The sink light needs it's own switch at the sink area.
Not nearly enough space to seat on 2 sides of island. All seating should be on one side in that space.
Wait! You don't put your glasses near the frig? They could go in drawers opposite the sink across from new frig location.
    Drawers, drawers, drawers.
    Thinking it through. Great video!

100% agree on criticism of designs. Too many kitchens look great when static but a nightmare in use, trying to design my own currently and trying to come up with a balanced compromise 🤔

Liz, can you make a video about ceiling height and how high cabinets should go and if the size of kitchen space is a factor please.
I’m having a hard time deciding where upper cabs should end. My kitchen space is 16 x 12 with a 10 ft ceiling connected to a living dining room scape 26x15 with a 14 ft ceiling. Will it look silly in a 16x12 kitchen if I run cabinets all the up to the 10 ft ceiling height? Thank you ☺️

Hi Liz, A little advice/question. If I have a L shape kitchen that is 12 feet from end to end and I will require a seam somewhere in the granite. (most slabs I found are around 9-10feet long) Any thoughts/ideas of where to put it, do I put it at the L turn or hide it as much as possible where the sink is? Thanks Rob

The fabricator is going to have a say in what works best based on the sink specs, but I’d go for the corner. Around the sink seams see more moisture and shore more over time.

    Hello Liz,
I’m freaked out. I have a 12x12 kitchen we are planning to completely renovate. There is a wall between it and my 12x19 living room that we are ripping out to open it up. I cook. I do have a plan I paid for and am going through the first draft of it for changes.
For one, I really, REALLY want an island. A family member had a similar size kitchen and remodeled on the permimeter. When they entertain, everyone is just crammed in the middle of the Square, in the way, talking. Im not doing that with my remodel. Think Ina Garten’s kitchen…she has an island and uses it how I envision mine. Yes her kitchen is amazing and built for a professional who does a reality show out of her house, but you see what I mean. An island is a landing point for your guests or family to sit and talk while you work your triangle. At least a couple seats on one side?! And about the plan you critique in this video, Id suggest they add a couple stools on one side of that island and move the function of eating the meal together to an adjacent room if they can.
What else do you do with that space, Liz??? Help!!!

Skylights are cool but they have big issues too... They heat up the house in summer by letting in the sun when it's directly overhead; they're a big uninsulated hole in your roof leaking heat in the winter; and they WILL leak water at some point which will be an expensive fix. Stick with south facing windows and of course a good lighting plan!

Great idea except my kitchen is on the north/northwest side of my house so it's impossible to have south facing windows. The lighting is one of my biggest concerns in the remodel because I just don't know how to keep the kitchen from being dark and dreary.

I want a small kitchen hidden at the back of my house with doors to shut so it's not visible and with a huge pantry so I can hide accoutrements and a beverage station/ bar area located between the kitchen and living room that's accessible via a galley style walkthrough with it's own dishwasher, ice maker, and sink area but located where I can't see all that. So I'll use some of your tips when planning my dream home. Thanks.

“You can’t have an island in a 12 foot wide kitchen” is a crazy opinion. You can, with trade offs. Such as: you can’t sit on the stool and do dishes. Without the island you can’t do that either…because there are no stools to sit on.
