    Happy Christmas, 7 Kin fam. Sounds like yall had a tough go over the holidays, we're just glad everyone is happy and safe now. Spitting facts right out the gate, my friend. It took some time, a few choice words and maybe matrix dodging a large tumbler before I learned this valuable lesson with my wife. Thankful and grateful that we worked it out but there were definitely times where we had the look getting passed around the dinner table. Be proud of that accomplishment and hard work, yall deserved it. Much love, bro.

    Your story reminded me of a story my sculpture teacher in college told us. He was showing slides of his previous works when he got to one and said "See this?.....I made it, I set it up, I took the picture, and I watched it fall over". That was when he learned that he needed a different approach.

      @ there is a different between boredom and when you have the energy to do something. So you just work on some project. In no hurry to finish it just enjoy working on it. Plus it’s still useful even when not “done “ You are outside the weather is good and you are getting something done eventually.

    • @7kinhomestead
      @7kinhomestead День назад

      @kennethoneill4176 oh, I see what you're saying. I think you're right. It's sort of an additional payoff and with most things there's no hurry. Its taken us 12 years to get where we are, if I was in a hurry, I'd have done it all in probably three. I think another thing that happens too is that time starts to mean something else to you, at least it did for me. You start thinking in seasons, years, five years, etc, rather than daily, weekly, monthly. That's an interesting thought.

    One bit of sage advice: In most states, it is considered the responsibility of the BUYER of a piece of land to find out what Easements and restrictions exist on the property before the sale. If the seller retains mineral rights and they find something like natural gas on the property, they can literally force you to move buildings, demolish fences, driveways etc. You may not even have legal access to the parcel. Do your own Due Dilligence on any property you are serious about by doing a records search at the county the property is located in before making an offer.

      Money is harder to come by but you can live a lot cheaper. We survived for years with a bunch of kids doing odd jobs. I also commuted to the nearest town and had a full time fabrication job but found that to defeat the purpose. We made slow but steady progress on the homestead where we could. Now we do remote editing for a few folks and that covers the expenses plus and for the last year we've been making a little money showing others how.

    I don’t want to steak 7 Kin Homestead’s thunder, but I started a similar journey about 18 years ago for my off grid retirement home. Bottom line is that the best time to do something like this was yesterday. The second best time is Right Now. It takes longer than you think but getting your property and getting stuck in kind of forces you to put one foot in front of the other until you get something comfortable and livable…. At which point you’ll have another problem: Keeping moving because it’s Comfortable and Livable and finishing all the little jobs and finish work to make it nice. If you can find unrestricted land in your area, you won the lottery. Everywhere else, you’ll be dealing with the county sooner than later. Water, and everything to do with it will be your biggest problem, biggest cost, and biggest hindrance. It was 15 years before I got a well on my property-that alone changed it from a place I could go to a Place I Could Be. Dragging water with us for all of our cooking, cleaning, and hygiene needs, heating all of that water with fuel that had to be bought (or cut, split and stacked if it wasn’t winter) the cost of the well, the cost in solar watts to get the water out of the ground,….. water is your biggest challenge. Little by little though, you end up with a place to keep the rain and snow off of you that has grid equivalent DIY’d solar power, high speed internet from cell towers or starlink, cheap propane on demand hot water, and you start taking less and less with you on your trips to go work on or enjoy the property. I won’t preach that you should be DIY’ing everything on an off-grid life-some people don’t have a knack for some tasks, but remember that everything you touch was made by man from materials that came from the earth-you can figure it out too with a little internet help. Some things make more sense to just pay for or buy outright-for me, that was my cabin. I would have taken far too long and spent too much money in gas and wear and tear on vehicles to end up with a cabin not as nice as the Amish would build for me…… but I DIY’d my solar setup and saved many, many thousands of dollars that way. Today I can comfortably live at my cabin for nothing more than taxes, food and insurance. It’s a great feeling to have done it pay-as-you-go and know that I have a backup plan if things got really bad with my health or the economy and I had to pick up stakes and move there. If I had a work from home type career, I could TOTALLY manage that. It’s not hard… you just put one foot out and take a step, then put another one in front of it-but if this speaks to you, make a plan and move in that direction Right Now.

      I said exactly how much I spent. $300 down, $212 per month for a total of $19,600. Sorry it wasn't clearer.

      @7kinhomestead that's how much it cost to start not how much you have to have to live month to month maybe I didn't make myself clear

    • @7kinhomestead
      @7kinhomestead 2 дня назад

      @theodorehyatt1782 right. That would be the answer to a different question. Not how much it cost us to go off grid. So if that was unclear, I apologize.

    I mean no offense by this. Just want to offer some feedback as a person who's enjoyed your content in the past. The recent videos have all felt like advertisements with very little meat to them. You titled this video "How Much Does it Cost to Live Off Grid?" and not only did you not answer that question, but you turned the video into an advertisement for an ebook that also doesn't offer the answer. RUclips is largely psychology in that you train your audience to expect things from you. I've always clicked on your videos because you trained me to expect some value being shown in it. You're starting to train me to want to click on the "not interested" button which largely hurts your algorithmic push. I haven't done that yet because I hope these last few videos that didn't really answer the questions all that well are just temporary as you find your voice but just felt I should share this in case it helps. If it doesn't, just disregard as you're ultimately the driver of this channel. Just want to see y'all succeed and wish y'all the best as someone who will (hopefully) be living a similar lifestyle to yourselves soon. edit: feel free to delete this after you've read it. I take no offense :P

      I take no offense and appreciate the feedback. These videos are me trying to get all my videos from TikTok uploaded to RUclips due to the pending ban. Some of them may come off that way due to them either being sponsored over there or them being used as an opportunity to promote a book or something that I made, to help folks "get there" and which I make the very small amount of money that we do have to spend in our lives. The book wasn't meant to tell you how much, it was meant to show a person a way they could accomplish acquiring land, even if they don't have a lot of money and, at no price if they didn't want to pay for it. Its helped hundreds of people do just that. I will tell you, our first episode of our show "Rock Rich" is coming out in the next few days so, don't give up on us just yet. Again, I appreciate your input. Thanks.
