As a 34 year old, I’m stepping away from urban lifestyle and picking up some acre to homestead. It’s always welcoming to see the older generation understand how we feel about the cards we’ve been dealt.

Well, if you don't mind the winters you should check out Maine, lots of large parcels of undeveloped land around me in western Maine for sale and it's cheap most of the time. 🙂 Also, even better is New Hampshire just to the west, no income taxes, no sales taxes. If I could pickup my homestead and move 25 miles west to NH I would, but starting over at this point seems like a hard road. But, for someone just getting in to it, lots of opportunities available to make your dreams come true. You just have to roll up your sleeves and make it happen and don't listen to the naysayers.

31 yr old here. Freedom is my reason for wanting to homestead/farm. Been saving to start, grewup on 10 acres and thought I wanted a normal "city" lifestyle but quickly realizing this "cooperate" job is a dead end job and I wanna go back to the woods. There is no happiness here and thinking back to when i was the happiest it was when I was young and free and my hopes and dreams while knowing it takes a lot of work and dedication is that I can be self relient while hopefully having some sort of an income through it allowing me to not have this stressful job working for someone else essentially giving me the feeling of "freedom". Hopefully it makes sense to whoever reads this and i get no hate lol sounds better in my head than typing it out.

Im hopeful that one day I can afford to homestead, at least enough land to be fully self reliant for my food production. I would hunt to supplement meat production as well, as im not sure if I would want to commit to raising even a few small cattle.

Unfortunately, the government doesn't make things easy for homesteaders and farmers, check the fed, state, and local ordinances of the property you plan on buying. It feels like there is a quite war on food going on. Also, with property taxes, you never really OWN your land, because if you don't pay they auction it away. It's disgusting. For every structure you put up, your taxes will go up, keep that in mind as you plan and build.

The younger end of gen x here, but i totally agree with all you just said. Got a decent start to the rat race in my young adult life but then recession hit my area hard, everyone i knew was impacted by it in some way. Knocked us on our butts, and put many of us on par with the younger generations. Got us thinking about how to live so it doesnt happen again. Been homesteading 3 years and keep getting knocked down...by the county telling us we cant do this and cant do that (thought this was a free county with an inalienable right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness... i guess i missed the part that says ' as long as you pay the county exorbitant fees to tell you your business'... and nightmare neighbors. Looking at moving and starting over. Just feels like all the cards are stacked against our success, and that of our kids, nieces and nephews.

We've been out here for 4 months now. Learning who's who and what resources are available to us has been overwhelming. I was already good at carpentry but now I'm learning welding, logging and milling, I just shot and processed my first deer, made trades with neighbors for farm fresh eggs until we get our land situated. All that to say, I love unplugging from the matrix. 20 years of chasing money to be wiped out with nothibg to show for it but missed time with the family and putting everything else before then just trying to stay in the hamster wheel. It has been rocky, I'll start doing video to document our transition. Leaning into each other and our faith has been tested and continues to be strengthened. If you're thinking about it, do it. I'm at the tail end of Gen-X, over the past 10 years I think I have about $600k into my homestead, the land, the house, the outbuildings, the equipment / tools, the gardens & livestock, I work a full time job remote "I thank God & Elon for Starlink", and part-time job on the weekends when I can. Oh, wait, I also have another full time job taking care of the homestead and all the little lives that depend on me. On an average night, I am lucky if I get 4-5 hours of sleep, I wake up hours before the sun does, go do my chores, come in, sign in to work, at lunch I go out to feed animals / check on them, or collect veggies, eggs, or milk, and go back to work, I sign out at 5, go do my rounds again, or work on the many projects or repairs that need some love, I love this lifestyle, wouldn't change it, no complaints. For those who don't do it, they will never know what it's like and only know how to make assumptions, armchair bitch, and tell you how to drive from the back seat, or assume things are always the same as time goes on.

But I always respond saying that "whose responsability was to teach them?"

The victim talk makes me want to puke. Quit blaming the system. The rules may have changed but the game is still playable. I talked to a guy today who coached his son to buy a piece of land a single wide on the outskirts of town 2 years ago. Be resourceful, learn to negotiate, find out how to get what you want within your budget. Break free of the popular scarcity mindset. 6 years ago i said I'm done not having what i want, and made a 10 year plan. This year closed on my 3rd home since then, i don't have car payments, I don't wonder if i can afford clothes for my kids, I don't wonder if we can eat well, I don't wonder when our next vacation will be. Above all, I'm not cursing the generations before me. Life is WAY too short for that. I'm not trying to belittle your struggles, but I was born in 89 which makes me a millennial, and if I could do it (trust me here) you can find a way too.

That you didn't catch the end of this one. All the things you said here are things I believe too. This video was an attempt to help folks who feel the way I described here to regain control of their lives. The video has been seen millions of times on other platforms and just got posted here. You seem like you genuinely are trying to encourage and help but I can tell you, for sure, the way you went about writing this comment is among the least effective ways to change hearts and minds. Nobody in history has ever changed their mind by being bludgeoned with someone else's truth and making someone wrong for what they think results in them digging in their heels and being "right" even when they're not. Congratulations on your success 🎉🎉🎉

@7kinhomestead You are correct that I haven't seen your other videos. I actually appreciated the video, but my comment was geared towards the section about how baby boomers were handed this golden era and they went and ruined it for everyone else in the future. I really don't care if those are your words or if you are regurgitating the comments of others, it's that message that I can't agree with. I'm ok if we agree or disagree, but for the sake of clarification it's the victim mentality that rubs me the wrong way, not you or your viewers. Have a good day.

    • @7kinhomestead
      @7kinhomestead  Месяц назад

@taylorsessions4143 I got what you're saying. Its not so much my words or someone else's. It's simply statistically true. Maybe not for the investor class but for everyone else. The point of the video was to say, ok, that's a truth so with that being the playing field on which the game is played, it's still your responsibility to win at it. My entire channel is about how to still get what you want out of life even in the face of economic struggles by going about it a different way. Acknowledging a person's struggles is not a victim mentality, it's a very effective way of helping a person let go of a victim mentality and get on with it.

Interesting that you say this about Baby Boomers and Gen X. I was born in 1959, the cusp between Boomers and Gen X.
Like you I had to have two or more jobs to pay my rent. I would pick stalls at a local barn on weekends, pack freight on weekday evenings, and clean rat cages for a laboratory weekdays. This I did for years. My friends lived a similar life.
Interestingly enough most people I know, be they 87 years old or 30 years old, have lived this similar lifestyle.
This weekend I watch my 30 year old neighbor and about 10 of her friends put up a straw bale house and stucco it. They have gone from friend's house to friend's house helping each other.
For two days I heard nothing but happy talk. People really enjoying spending time together and getting lots of work done.
My message to you is stop crying and try helping other and maybe they will help you.

I can say in no uncertain terms that if that is your message to me that you have no idea who I am and what I'm about. Not sure if you watched the whole video but if I were a betting man, I'd have money on you and the folks you described being in that third group I mentioned because a large swath of your generation doesn't think that way. Either way, my main message to you is that I preach building community as a necessity for this lifestyle and I speak at length about the way to accomplish that. You do it by personal contribution, by helping others. Your message may be new news to many, but it's a dilatante's first step to me. Good day.

hate to break it to you, but the people buying up property and renting it are overwhelmingly blackrock capital, citigroup, vanguard, and citiadel....not any regular person.

Although I believe the practice of private equity groups buying up single family homes is a massive problem and will get worse over time, the data doesn't support that idea. Those groups have historically made up roughly 4% of single family home sales including last year. Now, lets play on a hypothetical. If you were to arbitrarily group up the leaders of all the companies and sort them into generations, which generation would you think is overwhelmingly represented?
