    I remember seeing Meatloaf being hit by a plastic bottle, and then falling over. I also remember getting drenched for most of the day, until that is the very first few chords of "Knocking at Your back door" when Deep Purple took to the stage and the clouds parted.... and, then, finally, afterwards, spending the better part of an hour helping to push coaches out of mud.. so ours could get out of the field where they were parked. (We saw a tractor helping, but we shifted 3-4 before it arrived. It's amazing what true rock fans are capable of, I guess it's the neolithic way ;) )

    Long post here. Have a cup of tea! I bought a ticket for this then won two tickets with the local newspaper and two with the Daily Mirror. So I had 5 tickets. Mum agreed to take me and three friends down and she would go shopping in MK whilst we went to the gig. The Daily Mirror tickets came with VIP passes so a friend and I went to the backstage VIP area (aged 16 and 17) for some free Harp lager and some Harp Beat branded goodies like t shirts and badges. We watched all the bands. I remember really enjoying Magnum and Mamas Boys. I was looking forward to seeing Gary Moore but he seemed to be in a bit of a mood. I remember him making some dismissive comment when he played The Loner about “this song suiting today, considering the mood..” I bought a scarf, which I still have, the baseball shirt and the programme. I still have the programme too but I regret getting rid of the shirt. I thought MK Bowl was an excellent venue but this has been the only gig I’ve seen there. It was a bit of a dust bowl so when we eventually got home I had a bath and the water went brown!

    I was too young to go this on my own but only lived a few miles away so my mum suggested she drive and we’d listen to Ozzy from the car park as we had done Marillion the year before. As you say, no real security so you could do that kind of thing. I did go and see Ozzy on tour the same year.

    Travelled from Bedford on United Counties Double Decker, the local bus company would supply tickets and travel. Brought 2 litre bottle of lemonade and would not let me in unless I cut off the top of the bottle, so walked round with a bottle with no screw cap on. Missed much of Mamas Boys set which was a disappointment as played Power and Passion alot, bored out my head watching Tull, remember sitting down, stupid as now grown to love them, Magnum passed me by as only had On A Story.... thought Gary Moore was excellent with Neil Carter, enjoyed Marillion but sort of passed me by, still have the programme, didn't buy a t shirt, as spending on vinyl was more important, although my friend with me brought gary moore which had flags of all different countries he had recently toured, great memories, great discussion

    Out in the Fields was my introduction to both Gary and Phil. Being a kid nearing ten it had no appeal to me but my parents liked it, because they knew of Thin Lizzy. Nearly forty years on, I think it's a classic track, a great document about the Troubles. RIP Phil and Gary.

  • @wirralnomad
    @wirralnomad 25 дней назад

    This was a wonderful day, I had the t-shirt with the kid on it sat in front of the marquee. Also I believe that Gary Moore was not meant to be on the bill, it was meannt to be possibly THE first or one of the first gigs for the reformed Thin Lizzy after Gary and Phil had hooked up a year earlier, they were just about to get back together as Lizzy when Phil passed away, now being as things are each member of a band will sign a contract to appear individually even as a band and so when Phil died Gary was still contracted to appear and out of repect he decided to appear as a solo artist rather than using the Thin Lizzy moniker. How true that is I can't say, but that was believed to be the truth back at that time and although it was great to see Gary Moore live I feel that I was gutted that I never got to see Lizzy live who were at that time one of my top favourite bands whom I was just a little too young to have seen them the first time around, at this Garden Party I would have been 17 years old and just shy of 18 by about 6 weeks. The Marlboro Biplanes during the Tull set were for me at least a particular highlight of the day, we travelled down from Liverpool on a coach so we didn't get home until the wee small hours. "Those were the days my friends"!

    • @talesfromthepowerage

    That was mine and my twin brothers 19th birthday 🎂 at MOR 1988, 15 of us got the coach from outside the royal court theatre in Liverpool. It was a party 🎉 before we even got on the coach. What a day that was. The crushing was crazy mad, it was that tight down the front for GNR I could hardly put my hand on my chest to push the person in front of me an inch to take a breath. Sad about the deaths, I remember the video screen on the left coming down. It was not as bad for crushing in 87

    Great to see you guys paying tribute to the greatest Irish band of all time BAR NONE! Amazing album and the tour video of this line up on the steps of Sydney Opera House which can be found on RUclips will blow your mind. I grew up on Lizzy and my fave album will always be Live & Dangerous which will clearly be #1 when you do your live album pod! I once asked a true rock insider, who worked with almost every single band you mention on your pod, who were the “most outrageous rockstars?” He looked toward the ground, paused for a second, shook his head and said, “Thin Lizzy,” whatever you’ve heard, nobody came close to them…

    Another fantastic show - what an album !. I was 14 when this came out in April `79 & had to wait until June to buy it as you can buy everything that comes out instantly on pocket money. I taped it off on of my mates until I had the cash for it,£ 2:50 at the local record store called "The Music Shop", It`s my favourite Lizzy album to this day. Here`s my top five; 1. Black Rose, 2. Do Anything You Want to, 3. toughest Street In Town, 4. Waiting For An Alibi, 5. Got To Give It Up. A little bit of extra info on the album, Jimmy Bain played bass on With Love & Huey Lewis (& The News) played harmonica on Sarah & With Love. I only got to see Thin Lizzy once with Phil, at Reading in 1983. You lot were really lucky to have met him& had such a positive & memorable experience, he always came across in interviews as a humble likeable guy. All the best, looking forward to the next episode. 🤘🐑🎸🍺

    Sarah, about Phil's baby daughter and Got to Give it Up about his addiction - the cruel irony. Though I didn't grow up with Thin Lizzy, it's been a privilege getting the albums and enjoy them. But as much as I liked Black Rose, I can't say the same for China Town - the downfall began there and then. Another great episode.

      Chinatown is great too. Unfairly trashed by many. I don’t get it.

    Duuuude! This party I was at before you lol. Saw them at Sonisphere Madrid in 2012. Was actually side of stage standing beside James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich who were massive fans. That’s another story! Their first album was brilliant but the second one wasn’t. Never really got back on to them, partly due to the singer throwing the rest of the band under the bus, which just gives me bad vibes. Still the live experience is undeniably awesome.

    I was late to the Ghost party too, also in 2022. It was 'Call Me Little Sunshine', too, that captured me from first listen: my cousin wanted me to play on his album and played it to me as an example of guitar tone (we never did do the album!). I have even covered CMLS now. Ghost's catalogue is astonishing. As an old rocker (I'm 64), I had given up being a true fan of anyone ever again. Just the occasional lover of this and that. Not anymore, I'm officially hooked to this band, act, project, whatever you want to call it. On the album, I had a similar ambivalent opinion about Twenties as Jammo, but I am coming round to it. I totally love Darkness. I love its mood. Its duality. Its melancholy. I agree on all other points. Impera is just wonderful. Also... I just recently had the most amazing experience. I went to the premiere cinema in London on Tuesday (18 June), where they were showing the new Ghost movie 'Rite Here Rite Now' before its official release today. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of Tobias Forge or Alex Ross Perry, (director) and was put onto a fan list, I wasn't sure what for. Somehow, and I'm still reeling from this, I got a free ticket to the film premiere itself, and I saw the film with 31 other gobsmacked fans (as well as the usual press, etc.). I also attended the Q&A session afterwards. I can promise you, it's a truly *stunning* film. I think Tobias is a genius. Subscribed

      Brilliant - welcome on board and thanks for the sub! I’ve got tickets for the movie on Sunday - can’t wait! Lucky you getting to see the premiere - how did you get on the list?

      @@talesfromthepowerage I turned up early, hoping just to get a look, and the bouncer said to us, 'go see the lady over there, ask to go on the list'. I was no. 17 out of 32. I didn't even know what I was signing up for!
