What's actually Standard Legal in Foundations and Jumpstart 2025?
While I think Foundations is looking to be one of the best sets this year, having 4 different set symbols release at the same time probably isnt helping the new player experience...

Might actually be cool to cast something like God-Pharaoh's Statue (especially if you do some lotus petal dark ritual stuff to do this turn 1). Opponent wont even be able to plow your marit lage on their first turn anymore Or Trinisphere since your main combo piece costs 3 anyway. Perhaps some games you just dark ritual into Trinisphere to buy yourself a boatload of time
I hate this, actually.
Why? How often were you double blocking with a pump spell ready to go?
@attackoncardboard no, I was blocking a 3/3 with a 1/2 and a 1/1 that when it died it did 1 damage to something!!!
Ok, so no changes here then. With the old rules they just Overassign lethal damage to the creature first in block orders (the one without the dies trigger). So there nothing to hate...
@attackoncardboard you can do that??? I was way off
Seems bad
How so?
The One Ring thing strikes me as a condition for an effect that is automatically applied to the player as soon as it hits the field, unless it was countered. It has a trigger/etb effect on it but, that seems like it's just checking to see if the condition was met. I feel like that should've been a warning for Javier and _maybe_ a match loss for both, since it reads as if its mandatory. But I agree Simon didn't cheat there, that's just Javier misplaying pretty badly. Can't say anything about the first or last thing, tho
While I agree with this ruling. I do understand the confusion, as with the gods the later ability explicitly overrules bello. In this case, it’s a more subtle replacement as it would make sense that it once it’s an enchantment it could then be effected by bello. The continuous nature is less contradictory.
Stifle gonna be making it's way to sideboards to a deck near you!
Oh that's weird. Brawl in arena doesn't let you put your commander back if your graveyard gets exiled
@7:03 Not cheating related, but actually a misplay on Simon's part. Being that the trigger was missed, and can be demonstrated at this point as being missed, there was no reason for him not to attack with his creatures. If Simon attacked and Javier pointed out the trigger at this time, the trigger has ALREADY been missed because of the Suncleanser trigger and it would be Simon's decision whether the One Ring trigger should be added to the stack at the time of pointing it out. The attack is essentially free here, and would really feel like BMing your opponent.
Nothing unusual in legacy.
Wait so the first guy is already a known cheater and he was still allowed to compete in a tournament?
Yup. No lifetime bans for cheaters... 😮💨
My favourite commander killer is The Princess Takes Flight. So often players will put their commander into exile underneath the saga, knowing they’ll get it back for free after step 3, but then sacrificing it do something like an Auratog. Card stays in exile forever, sorry!
This doesn't make any sense, no way am I ever playing the game like this.
What doesn't make any sense?
3:05 - new combat rule
? I'm covering the same example with the new rules that launched with Foundations?
@@attackoncardboard just a timestamp for me to come back to with friends, since we always get confused at this step
so this means ravager affinity is truely dead.. rip skullclamp
How so?
You can still cast spells between blocks and damage so why would affinity be affected at all? Also, Skullclamp hasn't been legal anywhere other than Vintage and Commander in ages...
Simon very clearly cheated both times. Suncleanser in hopes Simon will forget the trigger (after acknowledging that he has protection due to not attacking). Then shuffling dead cards into the library when Javier needed a supreme verdict. Should be a DQ
Whose responsibility was the One Ring trigger?
This is a LOT of stating opinion as fact. You may be correct, but it’s you opinion, that you believe Bart was cheating and you say “absolutely” and then it’s your opinion (belief) that Simon didn’t know. Technically these things aren’t opinions because they are true or false thus they are facts but you’re asserting them as truths while they are speculation… but that’s semantics.
Also putting a bunch of cantrips and lands into your opponents deck with the shuffle is pretty big, notice he didn’t do it with the trigger on the stack to shuffle in a ring…
It's a fact that Bart got banned for cheating. That's not an opinion. As I mentioned, I can infer as to why he was banned based off the official Judge report. I also cited the rules to which he broke. In Simon's case, it's a fact that he wasn't DQ'ed for cheating, I cited the rules as to why he didn't cheat. He should have been given a warning, but nothing that would have impacted the match results. Again, I infer as to why he did things based off what he said and his history.
There were like a million rules that are more unintuitive and that they could have changed instead. This feels arbitrary. I'll miss the old combat rules.
What do you miss about the old combat rules? How often were you double blocking with a pump spell?
@attackoncardboard it's not just directly about pump spells. For example multiblocking with Prowess will be affected by this.
From the large amount of people saying they already played this way, I wouldn't say this is arbitrary. This is generally the way new players assume it works if you aren't told that ordering blockers is a thing. It seemed pretty arbitrary to me to basically have to divide damage twice in two different parts of combat.
I want to play this but don't know how, dark depths isn't relevant in most 60 card formats anymore T_T
case 1 is a du,b call imo. if it was so obvious, then how did oppo not catch it?
Have you played in a Pro Tour before?
@@attackoncardboard nah just RCQs
Let me know once you're in a tournament with $50k on the line and see if you have the mental capacity to monitor every opponent for cheating 😅
@@attackoncardboard its a fair point. I still have grievances about it for reasons that others in this thread have explained in better detail. take care
Mirage- first set with Phasing. Really fun set when it first came out.
so you need kona, omniscence and a way to tap it or wait a turn and then you STILL need something else to play with omniscence so it doesnt seem that busted me
I don’t like this change. It’s a massive nerf to green color, and combat as a whole.
How is it a massive nerf to green? Were you only ever using pump spells when you double blocked?
I'd play this deck
lmao, the "facts that are publicly available" is a pretty generous way to phrase "I assume something is true, so therefore it must be." Shit clickbait video is shit.
Out of all of this, the most confusing part is the sequence of events following endurance being cast. First, Javier shuffled it randomly, but he never gave his opponent a chance to cut it. That shouldn't have been allowed in the first place. That's not an easy to make mistake. Every time you shuffle randomly, your opponent has their chance to cut it, so why did he place it under his deck. Next, there's no way Nielson has a card in his deck that he doesn't know what it does. I don't care how exhausted he is. The first player's situation is far more complicated than knowing what a single card does, that's written right there for anyone to see. It wasn't as if there was a weird interaction that caused a misunderstanding. An amateur player wouldn't even make that type of mistake. Somehow both players made very basic mistakes that amateurs wouldn't even make, so that's wild.
So you can lie about text on the card depending on where it is placed on it? What did they smoke when they came up with this?
You can *omitt* what is on a card, you can't lie. If you ask me what abilities Vampire Nighthawk has, (at Comp REL), I can't say "vampire nighthawk has trample", I can say "vampire nighthawk has flying."
Turbo depths did get faster now
Oh and yes Simon clearly cheated. You even pointed out the reason it is why this is clear. But I guess it is cool to find loopholes in rules for when cheating is fine. Sportsmanship is dead.
How did he cheat? What rule did he break?
I think this affects draft play the most, those 7th pick one mana +1 +1 instant buff spells just became last picks lol
How so? do you only use pump spells when you're double blocking?
This rules change changes practically nothing in the grand scheme of things. You know what they say about people talking about IQs, they're usually the ones with the low one 😉
I like the new version
So in other words. They are making mtg once again less strategic and more luck based.... The point of having to assign how you attack is so the defender may have the chance to properly respond Now all the advantages lie with the attacker.
How is it "more luck based"? Do you roll a dice when blocking to see if you'll double block or not? Or do you strategically make that decision? 🤔
@@attackoncardboard Because as a blocker (and please correct me if I am wrong), now you cant respond to how the attacker intends to attack your creatures. So if you decide to give one of them a giant growth, you have to essentially just do it based on luck, since you boost it before you know if that creature is going to be the main target or not. Or did I misunderstand something here?
Right, the ordering of blocks has been removed. So you need to be more strategic in how you block. Your opponent deciding to split damage isn't luck based.
@attackoncardboard lol . I just realized, and this is hard to admit 😅, that after watching a few more videos on this topic, that I (and my friends) have been playing more or less according to the new rules for the past 10 years or so. Not exactly like the new ones, but closer to the new ones than the old ones. 🙈
@Wistbacka I'm hearing a lot of this. Once I'm back from the Honeymoon, I'm making a full explainer on combat rules/phase.
