The Building Blocks of Doctor Who Animation
What's brilliant about Doctor Who is that it doesn't need to end, ever. It could quite literally continue forever, it's a show that is able to constantly refresh and well... regenerate itself! However if for whatever reason the show were to go on an extended hiatus like in 1989 then I think it should be open-ended just like at the end of Survival, just end with the Doctor and companion(s) walking off into the sunset for new adventures so no matter what they are always out there fighting the good fight, saving civilizations and putting the universe to rights, always!
I would enjoy a classic loop so that the Doctor's end would be their beginning
I don’t think Doctor Who will ever have a definitive ending. If it gets put on hiatus again then it will be left open-ended.
I'm putting this idea on the table right now. I think the show should end with a second time war. Have the doctor and his current companions go up against some big threat like omega or something. And have some of the time lords who survived the masters genocide. Work with the doctor. Bring back old companions. And overall let the doctor die in battle I think that would be the perfect ending for the doctor of war
technically the show DID end with Jodie Whittaker. Power of the Doctor is the last episode of the 2005 show, so that 13-7th dr comparison is actually rather apt. Great video, thank you for this. Personally if the show were to end I'd like something open ended like Survival. An 'epic finale' wouldn't really work in my opinion
Wasn't expecting to see you here! I agree with you that it shouldn't be a grand finale as such
LOVE that input! Completely agree :)
How it could end? Well, they kind of showed us at the end of “The Day of the Doctor’ the episode where Matt, David and John Hurt as the war Doctor save the Time Lords. At the end Matt meets Tom Baker in the Art Gallery. Also take in mind the recently finished story “Shada” with the fourth Doctor and Ramana. At the beginning of that episode Doctor #4 and Ramana are visiting Paris to see what? The art gallery and the doctor remarks in that episode. “After I retire I’d like to become a Curator of a Art Museum. I can see myself doing that.” Well in Day of the Doctor there is retired #4 Doctor (Tom Baker) showing Matt (his former regeneration self) the Art collection! So we already know how the Doctor Ends. He’s retired and living out his final days as he wished a Curator of an Art Museum. :)
You are young so I will forgive your innocence but as Dr who is not just a UK production any more, it will continue to be made for as long as it makes a profit per year as a franchise which it does markedly. This is the same bloody reason why Star Trek and Star Wars have been totally flogged to death as well and yet still continue, these things will never end during your lifetime nor mine, they may take a hiatus here and there in this or that form but will always return as they are money makers. Indeed the only reason there was such a gap in the Dr Who landscape was because the BBC who were the sole producers back then, became governed by a succession of people who disliked to hated science fiction, those who worked on Red Dwarf at the time can attest to that.
If the Doctor had to end ( or at least take a hiatus for a while), I would love to see something along the lines of people throughout the galaxies asking themselves one question, WWTDD - ' WHAT WOULD THE DOCTOR DO ?'. I believe it would show the impact the Doctor has had in all of space and time. But this also begs another question, ' How would we 'retire' the TARDIS ? Knowing that the TARDIS is a sentient beings, how would you tell her she's no longer needed ?? 😟
It will end should the BBC end without selling the intellectual property. The current model of the BBC looks destined to fade. I think the current model of the UK has a very uncertain future. I cant see Disney continuing to fund it. Look what they did with the Acolyte. So it will have to be made and funded locally. Shows like Outlander are a good template. If the franchise can be moved from company to company it may outlast the BBC and the UK.
The Acolyte was a LOT more expensive to make and with that show Disney were ENTIRELY funding it whereas they only contribute partially to Doctor Who and its a drop in the bucket for them.
Jumping on your point of the show ending with a sacrifice, perhaps instead of the Doctor, it's the TARDIS that sacrifices herself to protect the Doctor, meaning that the Doctor's adventures end and it's out of their hands.
Personally I think it should end like it did in 1989, just a simple speech, that was perfect, The Doctor and Ace off for more adventures, always still out there, they could do something like that
I enjoyed this video tons and I agree a lot with what you've said. I think going back to RTD was a mistake, it's made a lot of the new episodes feel dated. I don't think it'll end, but for now I think it needs a break. Then if they've found a new showrunner with new ideas (and that's the beauty of Doctor Who it has limitless potential) bring it back. It won't end like 1989, but I wouldn't be surprised if the BBC just pause production because they either won't find a company to co-produce it or they won't be able to find a producer. It's not like the BBC is hostile to Doctor Who, but in this landscape of budget cuts and political controversies they probably wouldn't have a choice.
The BBC can just go back to making it themselves IF Disney don't renew their deal.
@@friendlyotaku9525 I don't think so. I doubt they can afford it and it's hardly ratings gold.
@blueknight0604 yes they would be able to, they were able to for 60 years before Disney and will be able to for 60 more years after Disney. And Doctor Who is one of their MOST watched shows.
@friendlyotaku9525 It really isn't. The BBC took a huge budget cut in 2021, and they've axed tons of programs made in-house. It's become the norm for a program to be co-produced. Nowadays, Doctor Who doesn't cope well when its budget is low, it's partly why it got cancelled in 1989. I'm a diehard fan, but I'm not gonna be an optimist, the show is clearly in trouble.
Funny, I've always compared Capaldi's final season to Trial of a Timelord (Missy being the Timelord on trial), and both seasons are my favourite of their respective eras, despite a lot of fans seeing them as poor. And then both were followed by three seasons that could be hard to watch / justify in the company of others. Funny that Jodie's Who wad produced by the very guy critical of the McCoy era. It seemed right that it should have folded after that, with maybe a 7 year gap til the equivalent of the McGann era / one off!
I've come to realise that, while I make it seem like I'm disappointed with how Doctor Who has been handled and am hoping it gets cancelled. THIS CAN'T BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH! I intended this video as a genuine look at how Doctor Who could possibly end. I apologise for any confusion! I always intend to be as positive as possible on this channel and never intended to come across as ungrateful for what we have!
It's all good man. Also do you still use Discord? Been trying to get in touch with you again but idk if I said something wrong (name's Debug on there)
Ah apologies! I almost never use Discord anymore and have been essentially logged out for years but I'll get back on that now!
@@SamThomas_YTthis what i think should happen if it ever ended have a funereal for the doctor so everyone thinks he is dead and then at the end of the episode have the tardis disappear to prove he not dead
For the life of me ,I simply cannot understand why so called Doctor Who fans are obsessed with killing off their favourite show ! It's the same thing every time a season ends ! All the doom merchants come out and call for it to be cancelled!why not ,just for a change , simply enjoy what we have now ,which I a hell of a lot ,from blu Ray boxsets, colourised 60s Who , Christmas special and animated releases! Fans today behave like spoilt brats who are never happy or content with what we are given . They should try living in the 1970s when we had virtually nothing except for some Weetabix cards, an annual or some jigsaws! So let's stop this crap and get behind the show and stop calling for its end!
Ah! I'm really sorry that's how I came across in this video. I am extremely grateful that we get so much Doctor Who! I only intended this video to be a hypothetical look forward and how Doctor Who could potentially end. I, of course, hope it doesn't happen any time soon (and doubt it would) I just wanted to see what takes people would have on the eventual discontinuation of the TV show. I have changed the title and thumbnail to better reflect this and have pinned a comment explaining this. I really appreciate your input, thanks! :)
I don't really think that's what anyone is saying. But in all fairness Doctor Who hasn't had a united fanbase since at least the 1980s. I mean Doctor Who fans were on Points of View absolutely obliterating JNT and would send numerous letters complaining about story quality. No one wants Doctor Who to end, it's more a case of people not really bothering with the show anymore. It's clearly struggling right now and the fanbase is clearly rattled.
Telling people to just enjoy the slop churned out isn't going to get people to watch People are not enjoying the content being served up Having standards isn't being spoilt and a lot of people have stopped watching The people who want it cancelled say so because they want as little damage done as possible to the franchise
@michaelparkinsonsfreeparkerpen "The people who want it cancelled" And I call those people selfish because they want the show to be cancelled because they don't enjoy it anymore and want to deprive other people who do ENJOY it. That is just selfishness, if you don't enjoy it in it's current form stop watching and let others who do enjoy it continue to do so and maybe in the future it'll turn into a form that you DO like.
@@friendlyotaku9525 Damage limitation is not selfishness People have stopped watching lmao
Even if the show didn't end with Jodie Whittaker, the BBC's attitudes towards the show in the McCoy era accelerated its end, if they were more softer such as not putting it with the popular Coronation Street then it could have reached 1993. The BBC now have no bitterness as they did in 1988. 2028-2033. This is when I think the show will end.
Hey Sam! It’s been awhile, glad to see you’re doing well. Any video ideas on anything has got my interest immediately if by you! I’m not going to lie when I say that…I’m not a fan of the colourisations, & that I am worried about The War Games In Colour. I actually like the idea of colourising Black/White Doctor Who. I 100% agree that some of the atmosphere & original magic is lost in colour (& that when it was made, it was filmed & lit in mind that it was going to be in Black/White), but I also agree that Black/White television is a barrier for a modern audience. Hartnell & Troughton are my favourite Doctors now, but as a kid I hardly watched any of their stories because it was Black/White. So even if there is a loss in mood & magic with it being colourised, it being presented in a more accessible way for modern viewers is more than a justified reason why these should exist. BUT, I just think the quality was poor for The Daleks In Colour. The edit is now infamous for how disjointed & just weird it was, loosing all the mood & atmosphere the original had. The new music, SFX & dialogue clashed so much with 60s BBC Studio audio. Key scenes that focus on character, conflicts & arcs are just gone! Because so much material was cut, it actively created new plot holes. The edit was so disjointed, it made Legend of the Sea Devils look good! And that’s just the edit! It’s so weird to me because I follow the colourists who worked on The Daleks In Colour, & I’m amazed by the work they release online. But The Daleks In Colour was so…unattractive. The colours were oversaturated to hell & back, especially Barbara’s jumper. Why was the Petrified Jungle full of lush colour, it’s petrified?! The Dalek walls being purple & yellow & blue & green not only doesn’t fit aesthetically, but makes all the Dalek Control Room scenes look like it was set in a disco (although some parts of the walls being red is correct & does work.) The human flesh tones are so inconsistent, sometimes they look normal & sometimes it looks like the characters have jaundice! Also, of all the things to not have any colour, why isn’t the TARDIS Console green like the prop was actually? It’s so obvious that The Daleks In Colour was rushed, & I wouldn’t be surprised if the colourists who worked on it aren’t happy with the end result. The whole end goal of colourisations is to trick the viewer into forgetting that what they’re watching was originally made in Black/White. I don’t think anyone was fooled by The Daleks In Colour, which is a shame as when I watch the fan work released online, I’m tricked with only a few seconds. And here’s the thing, even diehard fans of the original ‘The Daleks’ story agree that the story had a pacing issue. So after seeing The Daleks In Colour failed in its pacing edits, I have no confidence that The War Games In Colour will work because that story despite being 10 Eps long is often praised for how well it paces itself despite it’s long episode length. Also, The War Games means a lot to me & Troughton is my favourite Doctor & I don’t want to see his final story be battered by the edit like The Daleks was. I’m not a fan of the new Regeneration either. It makes a great fan video to be on RUclips, but as an official product I don’t like the idea of them changing the original unique regeneration for the uniformed modern version. All these colourisation edits feels like the attempt of turning Classic Who into Modern Who, which I strongly am against. The two are different, and that’s okay. Basically, I am all for colourisations of 60s Who. But it’s got to be of actual good quality that colour artists can be proud of. I find the argument that ‘the original Black/White episodes still exist & aren’t going anywhere so stop complaining & embrace alternative ways of watching the story’ to be a shallow argument. Just because this is only an alternative viewing experience (not a replacement), doesn’t mean that the alternative viewing experience shouldn’t match the quality & try to capture the atmosphere of the original. Those who watch only the colourisations will not only miss the whole picture & all the character moments & original mood of the story, but also will probably look at the original story with a lesser regard because of the qualities of the colourisation. (P.S, also the new edits of Classic Who just don’t make sense because it’s only going to be confined to 60s Who. The Modern Who edits aren’t going to be used on 70s & 80s Who so why bother doing Modern Who edits full stop? You’re just gonna make new fans who watch these new edits notice the difference in atmosphere, pacing & quality even more so when they get to 70s Who with it’s original Dudley Simpson music, Classic Who pacing & edits that actually allow you to breathe. Also, if you wanna watch a cut down, coloured version of The Daleks which lacks a lot of the mood & character work of the original, just go watch Dr Who & The Daleks starring Peter Cushing. At least you will get a consistent viewing experience
Very good info and points in your video, but (if I may be so bold) I had to turn on cc because the (IMHO) needless background music sometimes got louder than your voice, and your voice is more important. 😊
You're the 2nd person to point this out. I have always struggled with loudness of my background music. I think in future I'm just gonna err on the side of caution and make it a bit quieter than I would normally. Thanks for letting me know :)
I agree cutting 2/3 of a story is crass. And based on the re-editing choices made for The Daleks it does not bode well. Somebody clearly decided it was more important to have the big swirly whirlpool effect colourised which meant they couldn't make the logical choice to reduce the length, with out impacting the story, by cutting the entire trek through the swamp and mountains. Trouble is there are too many 'fans' working on the show and so their ability to make objective editing choices is compromised and I fear the same will happen to The War Games. Fans within the system can be a force for good, if it were not for them we would not have the excellent restoration team and the excellent dedication and attention to detail they have given over the years from the VHS - Bluray releases. But if the BBC is being honest that these re-colourings are to bring in new fans - then they need to make objective choices when re-editing.
I think russel meant it as an introduction to classic 60s doctor who stories for new generation, people that know doctor who, but hasitate to watch slowpaced black and white episode.
I agree. Would be lovely to know how many of the new generation that's never seen this actually watched it
this guy kind of looks like both of the smosh guys fused into one guy, and then put on glasses to disguise their identity ala clark kent/superman (i say this affectionately)
This might just have to be my new channel description :)
I think I must be the sole person in Who fandom who hates the idea of colourising the Black and White era episodes. There is nothing wrong with black and white media. In many ways, black and white has an advantage over colour, especially when creating atmosphere and making scenes unnerving. Shadows are much darker in black and white and light pops more as well. Added to this, the stories themselves were filmed with black and white in mind, so the sets and actors etc would've been lit to accommodate the black and white medium. When this process is then colourised, it results in the scenes looking, well, off.
Only because colour wasn't at their disposal, but every photo of the production team doing their work had used colour that would translate to b/w. And you're eight about atmosphere, b/w has unique properties that can make it ao much easier to do
@@ShamrockParticle There are certain aesthetics that black and white picks up that colour never can. Mood, ambience and depth of field being some of these qualities. The issue is that those 60s episodes were shot with black and white in mind, which meant high contrast lighting, which means that when it is translated to colour, as shown in The Daleks in Colour, the palette looks completely off and unrealistic. Sure, colour wasn't at their disposal then, but does that mean we should retroactively make all of 60s Who colour just because? I mean, black and white is a part of television history. Why should it be erased just because it is deemed to be allegedly "archaic" or "boring". Orson Welles is quoted as saying that black and white is the actor's friend as it makes every performance better. Sure, there are great performances in colour, however the tricks used in black and white photography really do lend a certain gravitas to an actor's performance.
If RTD wants these to be introductions for New fans then wheres the actual marketing around it ? Why isn’t there RUclips videos introducing them to new fans or why they were chosen ? Why not air them as some event on RUclips or something like that? Build up the hype
My issue is that I don’t understand who these are for.
i liked the dumb edit of them getting the daleks to the style of a 80s heist movie, even with one of them winking to the camera, its enjoyable
If they are gonna cut it down to 90 mins, I get it. Money is money and so is time. But you gotta get one of the many classic 4 or 5 parters and trim the fat. 100/125mins cut down to 90 makes so much more sense than literally double that
If I were inclined I would add the colour sequences from the cut down versions into the original and treat them like 1920s movies with a few colour moneyshots
Everyone is entitled to their opinions about the colourised/edited Classic Who stories... I myself think some of the editing down on the colourised Daleks was... poor? However I think we should bear in mind these things are aimed at encouraging New Who fans to try Classic Who... not at people who already watch Classic Who all the time. They are very probably aimed at children... maybe even the under tens? The question you should be asking is not 'What have the stories lost by being edited down?' but 'Do they entertain people who don't know the story before?' 'Is it easier to watch for a modern audience?' 'Does the adventure still make sense?' Perhaps we need to show it to younger fans and have them comment... Not have us dyed-in-wool-Classic-Who fans moan about what's been lost in the edit?
I'm totally with you. when i first saw the Daleks I was amazed by the creepy atmosphere. the colourisation made me wonder how much the limitations they had to work with contributed to that atmosphere, because the new music and the editing made it fall completely flat for me to the point where i couldn't appreciate the colour, which I don't doubt was painstaking work. I had really hoped they would choose something like the Romans or the Aztecs (heck even Planet of Giantscould be interesting) next, because they wouldn't have to cut anything down and I'd just like to see those stories in colour.
what the fuck is wrong with your background music whys is so eerie and loud
leave the dalek ambience alone
Tomb of the Cybermen will be next. They're already working on it as it was between that and War Games for this recent one.
4:05 to be completely fair, you do hear a lot of “start with the third doctor” recommendations to people trying to get into classic who. A lot of that is avoiding missing episodes, but also some people just won’t watch black & white TV. If this edit is a success I can see the new consensus being “start with the War Games colourisation then go onto Spearhead From Space, or double back if you really want more second doctor” It is quite a nice novelty for “the start of colour classic who” to be bumped 1 episode earlier, but I’m not confident in this edit as a standalone piece, much much less as a replacement for the original
The War Games would definitely be an interesting "start to classic Doctor Who" whether that is black and white and 250 minutes or colour and 90 minutes. But I like the idea that we could feasibly suggest The War Games as a jumping on point, just maybe not with such a jarring change in pace.
I've seen classic Who too many times to watch again. But colorised edits are just right for me to re-engage with iconic stories. A fresh context is everthing. Whatever anyone else thinks, I'll enjoy them while they last. Looking forward to it tbh
To be honest, I’m that one guy who doesn’t like colour in my 60s Doctor Who at all unless it’s the animation. This is entirely personal preference but I really do not like the look of colour being added to projects which were intended to be black and white. It always looks off in my mind. No disrespect to the colourisation team, that’s just me The cut-downs and weird editing choices are the bigger issue for me
To be fair, I'm sure if they had the option of colour, they would have, it just wasn't available for a few years afterwards. But yeah, it obviously was made to fit the B&W aesthetic.
Even Terrance Dicks was dubious about the War Games. IIRC he was proud of episodes 1 and 10 but, “there’s an awful lot of running between the zones in between”
Exactly, out of many stories it is a good example of where a lot can be cut. Maybe not only down to 90 mins however due to its 10 parts. Still worries me. I'm excited for the colourisation but I do dread more of those montage scenes from the daleks with unfitting music. If it stays clear of those and is edited to perfection, then I feel it can be great.
Perhaps too much, but in a recent rewatch the 10 eps flew by
The drums have driven me crazy, so anything about about 3 minutes sorry, making me to anxious to continue.
Agreed colouration AMAZING agreed cutting down DISAPPOINTING if no more animations are coming cut down versions are let down versions. Are full length colourisations too expensive??😢😢😢
Moreso too time consuming. It takes ages to do a colourisation.
It's like vandalism in my opinion what's not broken don't fix. There just not neccessary they weren't designed to be in colour this is just another thing for RTD to ruin and to piss on the original creators work so he can make more cash from people who have a fast tension span if they don't have the patience to watch 10 episodes then they can bugger off and go watch their precious new who.
As someone who had never seen the Daleks episode the colour version made zero sense for the last 20mins or so, I had no idea what was supposed to be going on.
That's a really interesting perspective. I've seen The Daleks way too many times, but that final act in Colour really was all over the place.
One huge issue with the "In Colour" Dalek story is the unnecessary flashbacks to moments that just happened minutes ago. Truth be told, getting a far more qualified editor, one that understands pacing far more than Benjamin Cook does, would be definitely be better. Being a Doctor Who fan doesn't necessarily mean you're the best one for the job.
Exactly this. By far was the worst aspect of daleks and the main thing im worried about for the war games.
I have to agree with you there’ is something not quite right about the colourisation of the black and white doctor who episodes especially when they cut down the episode length I like when the episode is split up into parts then having it one 75 minute episode. Besides I think they should keep them black and white as is and serialised. Well that and also the fact is that it is reminding me of when ted Turner tried to colourise old black and white film for his tv channels it just feels wrong.
Why did you just come back from the abyss ?
It was quite dark down there
I haven't bought the Dalek colourization as it was way too garish. If I wanted to see this story in vivid colour, I'm happy to just watch the first Peter Cushing movie. From what I've seen of "The War Games" It does appear more realistic. Though I am still dubious about buying it. As for the "Regeneration", not happy about that.
Glad to see you back!
The War Games is a good choice mostly because it's a super long story with a ton of filler. A 90 minute cut may be terribly short, but I think it really is going to depend on what was cut. I'm looking forward to it.
Personallly I'd have like to have seen TOMB colourised, if we're choosing a 2nd Doctor story.
Tomb would definitely have been my top choice!!
I honestly think the philosophy behind these colourisations of New-Who-ifying the old 60s stories can better be applied to the Missing Episode Animations, because the people behind them are not visually limited by the 60s style, and can go for an original aesthetic and direction that will better fit the mood and tone they're going for
I think they'll do Time Meddler and Tomb(60 minutes), Dalek Invasion(70 minutes), and Mind Robber(50-60 minutes).
Mind Robber would be really interesting to see in colour!
Good to see you back, Sam. I'm excited for the new version of The War Games, as the original version i still there anytime i want to watch it.
I think these cut-down colour versions are very frivolous and disappointing. I too would like more focus on restoration and animation of missing episodes. There are some very important stories in need of saving, and all involved in commissioning DVD / BR releases cry out about limited budgets and the difficulty of outsourcing work / outsourced work quality. An epic Mission To The Unknown / Dalek Masterplan box set is long overdue. The UCLAN live recreation of MTTU is now BBC canon, and any classic Dalek adventure is surely a better bet at recouping outlay costs than re-editing something that has already been released and turning it mostly purple. I've recently seen Tardis Girl's upload of a Wheel In Space AI animated recreation in B&W, and it is gorgeous. Made out of love, by amateurs in their spare time, and above the quality / authenticity of the few official recreations / animations that aren't so good. The BBC could, I'm sure, acquire the full project for a sum that would please the creators, but also less than the BBC managing / commissioning the whole project themselves from scratch, and then we'd have another important missing story DVD - Zoe's first! I too feel like RTD's reasoning doesn't stand up to scrutiny, and that any true fan of classic Doctor Who should be well able to rise up to B&W and 6+ part stories - if not, there are often dual versions on DVD / BR releases for those who 'need' colour... although, personally, I always watch the B&W as it is more authentic, and the tonal values / contrast rendering of these versions is infinitely more atmospheric and impressive than the garish colour choices.
