There have been some Doctor Who DVDs with no documentaries. For example, the original releases of "The Enemy of the World" and "The Web of Fear" only had the restored episodes, trailers for each other, and a telesnap reconstruction of the missing episode 3 of the latter story. This was due to the DVDs being released so soon after nine of their episodes had been found, leaving no time to add the usual special features.

The animations really bring the story to life and grateful we have them along with the extras. I've listened to the audio CDs and sometimes it's hard to imagine what's going on. The Web of Fear animation is awful, but thankfully it's only one episode. I hope they complete the missing episodes eventually (can't wait for The Daleks' Masterplan with Mission to the Unknown included).

I've seen classic Who too many times to watch again. But colorised edits are just right for me to re-engage with iconic stories. A fresh context is everthing. Whatever anyone else thinks, I'll enjoy them while they last. Looking forward to it tbh

Thanks for the excellent overview of the different efforts so far. Personally I feel nothing has matched The Invasion and Cosgrove Hall for an elegant way to see a missing episode and I desperately wish they'd done more, but I agree efforts like Moonbase and Macra Terror have been really impressive. All the best.

I am still awaiting a coherent explanation as to how the animators could screw up the Doctor's bow tie in Fury From the Deep and Web of Fear, despite being overseen by Gary Russell and cohorts, all dedicated (and informed) Doctor Who fans. The release of Galaxy 4, again under Russell's supervision, continued this tendency to do weird things to the Doctor's neckwear, in this case giving William Hartnell's Doctor an extremely weird collar and tie, totally at odds with his established costume. In each case, screwing around with a costuming feature so close to the character's face (unlike, say, the fabric pattern on the Doctor's trousers) is totally bizarre and nonsensical and becomes increasingly annoying as it's in every scene where the Doctor faces the viewer. I mean, we know the Second Doctor's bow tie was affixed with a safety pin, yet it's seemingly escaped the notice of everyone involved with these productions. It's obviously a deliberate choice, which is baffling. Even more baffling is that nobody seems to mention it.

Concerning the unreleased animations, I saw Mission to the Unknown, animated & the UCL student version, both had value; the animated one had the rocket & dalek city mentioned by the characters, & the UCL version was better looking overall. The Web of Fear ep3 fan made animation does look kinda cheap, but ended up being worlds better looking than that ragdoll version on the official release! Personally, I think the BBC should let the fans add their talent, or at least capitol, to the animation efforts. We want these stories back, let us bring them back!

It's so strange to hear how late the BBC were still deeming shows as no longer necessary to keep, well into the 70's It's equally strange that those in charge of the fate of a time travelling show, could themselves not have an inkling of the future, in that people would still want to watch this many years later. They could of course just be a bunch of morons though!

It's just a shame, at least for me, that the animation team behind Fury from the Deep, Galaxy 4, and Abominable Snowmen make so many mistakes. Despite using the previous animated Troughton titles, which have Troughton's eyes as blue (correct), we have Troughton's eye colour changed to brown. They made the same mistake with Debbie Watling's eyes. They struggle with likenesses as well - who's that masquerading as Jamie? I like the Ice Warriors, and the intention, with the animation, to replicate what was possible back then. However we have dumb decisions being made with recent, poor animations in the above examples. Fury from the Deep has the sets made huge, losing the claustrophobic atmosphere of the original. We have a control room that is so large with lots of empty space. Why?!!! I'm also distracted by weird animation choices - look at one of the security guards behind the action in the foreground and he twitches away oddly. Then there are the character models, with odd proportions - arms look oddly elongated. Does nobody on that animation team study the human body and how it looks and moves?
And then there's the attempt to bring diversity in a woke way. Back when these stories were originally made you'd have been hard-pressed to find Tibetan actors for The Abominable Snowmen. So the team made do with using British actors made up to look like they were Tibetan. Decision was made with regards to the story to change this to look like they did use Tibetan actors. While it may ease the conscience of some - the original is what it is. Do you take Sir Alec Guinness's performance in Lawrence of Arabia, hire an Arabic actor and have him replace the original actor? No. It is what it is. Why disrespect the original actors and replace them in Doctor Who. It's not the job of the animators to look at something and decide to mould it into something it wasn't. You even have the case, with Abominable Snowmen. of opening up the monastery to the elements, instead of the closed walls in the original. Why? Is there a reason? In reality it would have made things colder, exposing them to the elements. Even Jack Watling's character is made to appear much taller than he was. Why?!!
Then there's Galaxy 4. My goodness - what the hell is it with Hartnell's face? He's got lines all over his face that look awful. Then there's the Rill's spaceship. They've now made this look huge. For what reason? Now we have large, wide corridors in the ship, filled with nothing. I'm reminded of the quote in Jurassic Park where there's the line that goes somewhere along the lines of just because you can doesn't mean you should.
On the plus side, with recent animations, we have good versions of Power (special edition) and Evil of the Daleks, The Faceless Ones and The Macra Terror. The only gripe I have with The Macra Terror is that they deleted the Rough and Tumble scene, where the Doctor and co are cleaned up by an automatic machine. Why is it absent? The team said they couldn't do it. However a friend whipped up a quick version, that you'd be hard pressed to see the join between his reinsertion of the scene and the original animation. He does that as a hobby. He's not a professional. Yet people who are paid to do the animation find it too hard!
Too many dumb decisions are being made. Modern revisionism takes place. There are enough camera scripts, telesnaps, on-set photos and other stories that can give you a flavour of what the original story would have been like. I'd much rather animation resembled what was being done at the time, and what was possible. While I never saw The Power of the Daleks when it originally aired (I hadn't been born) I was happy to find that the animation resembled the pictures in the mind of what the story looked like from reading the book and listening to the soundtrack.
The trouble with some animations is they won't sell well based on the crap and cheap way that they've been done. Then the BBC will look at poor sales and then not bother. I know of many people who didn't bother buying Galaxy 4 for just that reason. While we're not expecting it to be the quality of Cosgrove Hall at least make it to the standard of many of the stories where they've got much already existing of a story - like The Ice Warriors, The Tenth Planet, The Moonbase, or like what I call the A-Team of the animations - Power and Evil of the Daleks, The Faceless Ones and The Macra Terror. The B-Team really need to step-up.
I understand that Ian Levine is helping to do some animations of The Massacre, Dalek's Master Plan among others. He released a screen-shot of Hartnell's Doctor. So much better looking than the horrible Galaxy 4 version. I fear the BBC give up on historicals though - they already thought we don't deserve to have The Crusade animated. They only needed to animate two episodes really. I also fear they're going to skip The Higlanders, The Wheel in Space and The Space Pirates. No, I'm not content with recons. I've paid the BBC so much over the years through my purchases of their products. I...we deserve so much better! I'm glad that someone has been working on animating The Celestial Toymaker, and has released the first episode. I understand he's doing it all himself. Goes to show you what some fans can achieve. Come on BBC. Do things justice.
