I would say that Time Flight does have some of the worst effects in the shows history. The Plasmatons are right up there with the worst designed monsters of the series. However the Vardans from The Invasion of Time, Erato (Creature from the Pit), and that very strange Alien Priest from Colony in Space; seriously a midget elephant man wearing a nappy! Could this possibly be topped - yes the Ergon (or Chicken Man as named by AI reviews). That is what makes DW so special. Admittedly on a budget you could probably just afford to feed a small child on you get everything from the tackiest (Ergon) to the phenomenal (Davros, Jek, Sil). I have always thought of my favourite show as being a bit of a lucky dip. As Davison once said '...you never know quite what to expect!'
Having watched this excellent review of Davisons era I have to admit I had forgotten just how bloody marvellous he was in the role. With so many Doctors, the popular Tennant and T.Baker, and the reappraisal of the earlier days with Throughton, it is no wonder that Peter always end up in the middle of most ratings. His Doctor who era does not belong to those who grew up with the new series and the classics tend to be dominated by those who watched Pertwee and Baker so poor number five is sort of relegated out of the picture to a degree. A case of being caught in the middle of a show with a massive tenure. Thank you Peter. You were a great Doctor - one who could see the beauty in the smaller things in life.

Black Orchid isn't a "true historical". The historicals were intended to teach the viewers about people and events in history, but _none_ of the characters, places, buildings or events in Black Orchid are real. It's a fictional murder mystery, which could have been set anywhere in upper-class rural England at any time between the Victorian era and the 1930s.

    • @paulhammond6978
      @paulhammond6978 Год назад +1

But, it's a "pure historical" in the sense that there are no alien characters, just a story about humans from the past. It's actually identical to the Highlanders in that respect. That too does not "teach the viewer" about any significant event - well, it mentions Culloden I guess. "The Smugglers" from a bit earlier is not about a significant historical event. "The Gunfighters" - it's a cod western, and mentions famous people like Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp, but is the Gunfight at the OK Corral a significant event?

    • @ftumschk
      @ftumschk Год назад

@@paulhammond6978 The "historicals" were conceived as a means of teaching the audience about genuine people and/or events in history, hence the name. The episode in question was arbitrarily set in the 1920s, but it could have been set at just about any time - it could even be set in the future or on another planet, for what it's worth. Indeed, it would still work if we replaced the Doctor and the TARDIS team! It's basically just a period murder mystery, not a Doctor Who historical at all.

15:35 Not quite. It was more that Christopher Bailey had already rewritten the script to account for all the cast changes since mid-1981 when it was originally commissioned, and simply refused to do another one to add Nyssa (whose main contract only came after she had so impressed everyone in TKoT), so she was always intended to not be a part of _Kinda,_ hence her contract not including the middle two parts.

Maybe it's because I'm binging, but things become more noticeable than if I'd watched eps in real time, or at least more slowly. When Tegan is introduced, she seems like a take charge, modern kind of lady. She's excited about her career and she seems ready to take on the world. But as soon as she joins up with the Doctor, she spends the entire rest of her time whining and complaining and running around like a chicken with her head cut off! That's not at all the sort of person she seemed to be when we first meet her, driving with her aunt. She's the one that wanted to fix the tire herself and found it an insult to call someone for help. I'm not even sure what's going on with Nyssa. She somehow knows everything about the TARDIS and I never figured out how. It does seem to be a case of too little story time for too many characters. But I do wish Tegan's character hadn't bee so changed, so quickly.

I hate the first two seasons except for Earthshock and the 5 Doctors. The worst period of Classic Who. The Chibnall Era repeated many of the sins of this era - crowded Tardis, weak Doctor, a Panto Master, etc. If I rewatch again, I'll only watch those two episodes and then skip ahead to Frontios, which is where it gets much better.

That very video DOES exist and was one of the main grounds given by Sandra Dickinson during her and Davison's divorce proceedings. This very 'soft' part of Davison's persona, ensured Dickinson was doomed to using a Zanussi spin dryer to achieve some gratification as well as purchasing a variety of battery operated devices which meant she almost single-handedly kept Duracell fiscally secure for almost a decade.😊

I'm watching these eps for the first time. Because I'm binging, it really shows how underused many of the companions were. Again, when we first met Tegan, she was a tough, independent young woman excited about her career as an airline stewardess. She's presented as someone who wanted to fix the car tire alone and who considered it an insult to ask someone for help. Yet she spent her entire time traveling with the Doctor complaining, wanting to go home, and being whiny/annoying. Good grief, she spent much of this ep literally lying down with a head injury! It's no fault of the actress. She was great. I even did like the character. But she was given little to do. This is all on the writers.

Oh, I thought for sure N. was going to die! It was sad to see her go. But she did have a pretty good end. As usual, I felt like we didn't even get to know her very well. But I feel that way about most of the companions. Again, that probably has more to do with the fact that I'm binging, so everything seems to go by so quickly.

    VERY enjoyable video, thank you!
    Totally agreed with Time-Flight!
And for Arc of Infinity, I do prefer Collier's take on the role.
    Great point on Silurian voices.
Heck, great points on many stories, especially Awakening but especially all of them!
Aeguably, 60s cybermen had emotional moments, too. The Moonbase is a good example of this. And as good as Earthshock was, it also feels like a rewrite of "Revenge of the Cybermen" but done right.
The sonic screwdriver was thankfully removed. JNT would roll over in his grave faster than a jet propulsion engine if he saw it in use in the modern era.
The first Doctor also said in a Dalek story that he will also use weapons to save his life if immediately threatened. Never cared for when 13 claims "the real Doctor doesn't", which is as if nobody making that story had ever seen the show before LOL.
I liked Lon's outfit. Not all civilizations are like ours. Snakedance is loaded with allusions and it's a treat.
Pertwee's era goofed up the UNIT dating. So had "Robot" from Tom Baker's premiere. JNT gets too much flak.
The Terminus space pirates needed those helmets because of all that hair. Indeed, the fogging up of the helmets is due to all that hairspray.
JNT took pride with the real robot, which he wanted instead of a guy in a suit or bland prop, because it was the latest in technology. Ironic, since the prop otherwise has a very fantasy-based concept of appearance from mind control! The creator dying did lead to problems, yup... nice use of video clips for him BTW! (Actually, I chuckled at all your jokes and audio clips superimposed on the video bits, hehe)
    1:16:26 Balok cameo? 😁
The Myrka is hit or miss, but if the set was not so overly lit, it'd be better.
I have a soft spot for Planet of Fire. Amyand and Timanov I found interesting.
Androzani was a rewrite of The Power of Kroll and with a very genetic Doctor and companion and plotting. Its strengths are definitely with direction, music, and guest characters and acting. The regeneration twist of saving one person was brilliant.

Bidmead and Saward's overseen scripts are overflowing with logical inconsistencies, but the one that takes the cake for me is god-tier engineer Omega, who harnessed a black hole and has zero relation to planet Earth, deciding that some old Dutch crypt pipes were the only source of power in the universe to enact his Arc Of Infinity plan. May as well get a bird skeleton and a zombified street kid to do the grunt work, yeah?
Also, how is there no scene where Tegan says "Why'd you jerks leave without me?!?"
Being a contrarian, I wanted to enjoy the Davison era, but it feels like every idea that JNT had was kinda terrible. Currently binging the whole classic series for the first time, and this is the first time it feels like a slog.

I don’t agree with all the opinions (notably on Talons and Ribos Operation last video) but I do agree with most of them. I started watching Doctor Who with Tom Baker (Invisible Enemy to be exact) but Davidson was where it became more like a religious practice. The first season of Davidson was when it really started. Earthshock in particular was massive at the time, since we all knew of the Cybermen but no one had seen them for years. And we were all sad when Adric died, even though we hated him. Unfortunately it was all downhill from there. Peri perked things up and Caves of Androzani is legendary, but between Earthshock and there it was mostly middling. Interesting to hear the opinion on Colin Baker because I thought he was great, but I seem to be in a tiny minority.

52:20 Oh no, I hated Turlough. "Is he going to ki..." He's not. "Is he going to..." No. "Well, how about..." Not that either.
Fine, you want to do this? You have to start off with "Dead Man shoes." The "maybe evil" Companion has and I mean has to kill the companion they're replacing. A rude school boy who thinks he's an alien because he's an alien... God bless Who and their human aliens because I sure don't... doesn't fit the requirements.
Or you can be completely bonkers and just have the evil companion outright kill the Doctor, causing him to regenerate. Then you wonder if the companion could do it again before realizing, finally, that it doesn't even matter. "Didn't think this one through" seems to be the Black Guardian's MO so he is on brand.

At least they could have followed up EARTHSHOCK with a four part story where the Doctor at least tries to save Adric and maybe fails. Instead of "Let's just go cheer each other up." I had a very bad reaction to Peter Davison's debut back in the day. He unraveled the Holy Scarf! I forgave him for that..eventually.

Yep, the daleks voice sound really threatening especially with different tones. Yep, Terry Molloy bets Davros which is judge praise with Michael Wischer being genius. Traumatised Tegan then comes back and happily shoots a ginormous killing weapon with almost glee. Well done Chibnall yet another character rewritten.

I have to say for me Peter Davisons era is probably my least favourite. It has some terrific highs. Like Castrovalva, Black Orchid, Earthshock, Enlightenment, The Five Doctors and Resurrection of the Daleks.
But the rest for me are pretty poor for me. Either forgettable or downright awful.
Castrovalva’s my personal favourite. I think it’s so unique, fun and has a terrific premise. I wish more writers wrote more stories like this.
Love the video! This is one of my favourite series’ on RUclips.

An often overlooked era. I do accept that there's a certain unevenness to the quality of stories - but never less there's some gold to be found : Earthshock, Mawdryn Undead, Enlightenment(my personal favourite), Warriors From the Deep, Resurrection of the Daleks and Caves of Androzani.

FASA has Adric saved by a Time Lady, who is brave enough, more than the Doctor, save Adric. Big Finish did revive Adric in a worse way: as an old man who wants to rape Nyssa and kill the Doctor using mutants he created. FASA at least has a good Adric surviving story. And Adric deserves to have more life, though Davison caused Adric to be the one to go. Records show that the producers, for years wanted to kill of someone: the Brig, Sarah, Leela and even Romana 1 and 2 were thought about to be killed off. Unfortunately they picked the one character who talked like a real person and who I related to in more ways than one, more so than I even realized. The story after Earthshock should have been about the Doctor at least trying to save him and failing I guess, though I wanted him to survive some way.

You know I have always said my favorite Doctors where 3,6 and 9 followed by 5 and 11 but I went back through who in it's entirety recently and I realized that Not only is Peter Davison the doctor I enjoyed the most but most of my favorite stories came from his era, The visitation, Warriors of the deep and Earthshock are all stories I remember finding on video cassette at carboot sales and charity shops in the late 90's early 00's

Davison's era has grown on me over the years. As a kid, I followed Tom Baker's Doctor from his first episode, and though I tried to adjust to 5, he never gave me that sense of alien eccentricity that got me hooked on the character. I met him at a convention (he drove up in Bessie), and he was as charming as could be, but he always seemed like the cool young uncle you'd see every Christmas rather than the fearless, unpredictable, and larger-than-life personality that put Doctor Who on the map for us Americans. I would tune in every now and then through his and Colin's years, but didn't like what I was seeing until McCoy, when I got hooked again just in time for the darn thing to be cancelled. But as an adult, I appreciate all the 80s era of the show so much more, and your review has made me go back and do a marathon of all the JNT episodes.
