    Great review, although - small point - Robert Holmes wasn't a vegetarian, although he was concerned with animal welfare. As he said in one interview: “I had this vegetarian theme running through [The Two Doctors], although I’m not a vegetarian... The things we do to animals!”

    This was a really well done video and a great exploration into the behind the scenes conflicts. The Sixth doctor is one of my favorites just for his genuine character arc from an overtempered unbearable madman to a very chill and strong minded character. This is probably may favorite of your doctor review videos. A Very well done!!

    While arguably the most conflicting of the classic eras, can we all agree that the episode titles for this era are some of the most memorable. Also as a german, yeah german Daleks aren´t the best voice wise, but that might also be because of a dubbing miscommunication of a timespan between the first airing and I wanna say 2014 or so till we finally decided to dub the classic era. A process that is still going on right now actually german translating takes a long time. Modern era Dalek voices are much better though in german so at least there´s that, maybe also because they finally translated exterminate to eliminate instead of the german word for destroy.

    • @AlReviewsWho
      @AlReviewsWho  6 месяцев назад +2

      Some great episode titles I agree. Glad to hear the German dubs are better - I believe this one was from a broadcast in the 90s (or so I've heard) and has been improved on for the home media releases.

    Whatever your thoughts on this era, Colin was never given the opportunity to really shine in the role. This has been redeemed in recent years with the Big Finish audio releases, but as a whole, various factors stacked up against Colin during his tenure, which was a real shame.

  • @RBenjo21
    @RBenjo21 2 месяца назад

    With Peter Davison’s “9 month wait”, there were quite a few repeats of Doctor Who in the middle of 1981, so there wasn’t really a “9-month wait”. Bear in mind Davison’s era was twice per week, so the gap was longer than any other Doctor until that point.

  • @mankindben

      @@ftumschk The first part of Hell Bent is actually really good. It falls apart when they get to the citadel and rescue clara. I vehemently hate what Moffat had done with Clara (and lady Me is pointless and stupid too). The second part of Hell Bent undermines the two previous episodes too. And also it derails DW canon and continuity. Fear Her is a very boring and very bad episode, but Hell Bent actively infuriates me (same as Timeless Children)

    I recently showed a guest Androzani. He was astonished at it, and asked to see Twin Dilemma. He couldn’t believe the difference, nor can I. However I do like the latter out of nostalgia; it is embarrassing, but I think it has its merits, especially Colin Baker, who had a hellish time trying to make his version the opposite of Davison.

    My thoughts then and now are that JNT was pissed at Davison not renewing. So he rushed a successor. The off season would have given further time to plan and finesse this new incarnation. Avoiding some of the catastrophic missteps.

    Tegan would of given the 6th Doctor a run for his money esp with her shaper tongue and sarcasm 😂. Timelash is my least fav of 6th era but I do like the Borad he was an interesting villain it's just some of the other cast really pull the script down.
    Love all the Evil One jokes and effects had me almost choking on my drink 😂. I always think Peri died and the Time Lords were just making it up that she was still alive to make the Doctor feel good. Although the Target Novel says she lived etc but her death is one of those spine chilling moments - "Protect me I am your Lord and Master" - classic stuff.

    I normally break up your videos into multiple days so I have only watched the first couple of parts. I'm 100% the opposite of most of the fan base. Even though Caves was great, I like Twin Dilemma better than 95% of Davison's era and even parts of Tom's final season. Colin was 100% engaged and gave a life to the show it hadn't had in since Romana II's first season. Twin Dilemma was such a huge upgrade (except visuals and the twin's acting) and I was excited.

    Great video. I largely agree with your analyses. I'd add that it felt like the Doctor and Peri, or perhaps Colin and Nicola, had developed a much better relationship by Season 23. It's such a shame that it wasn't allowed to continue, and an even bigger blow to lose Eric Saward.

  • @paulhammond6978

    I always thought that "have the Doctor start arrogant and blustery but get better as you get to know him" and "give us a whole story with the new doctor before the end of the season" are both perfectly reasonable decisions, and fairly interesting things to do - but doing both undercuts everything and risks leaving a lasting impression of Colin Baker's Doctor as the nasty Doctor I didn't like much.

    "Dr Who is Dead" cue clip of 2nd Doctor... Then a thought passed my mind at least it wasn't another Jamie idea 😂. I agree the Twin Dilemma was a weak story to follow on from Caves they should of got Holmes to write the post Caves story - would of been interesting to see what we have gotten. A later story Paradise Towers I always thought has 6th Doctor story all over it esp the dark themes of that particular story and I can see 6th being perfectly sarcastic and condescending 😂.
    I started watching Dr Who as youngster during the 5th Doctors final season - so grew up more with the 6th. Loved the 6th even his coat - which I wanted as a dressing gown (wish they would make that a reality 😂). I still love his condescending tone, sarcasm and small moments of compassion. I was so upset when he "regenerated" as I just wanted more of this Doctor. And you had Peri - drifts off into fantasy land 😂.

    I rather enjoy season 22, it’s got the same highs and lows as any other 80s Who. Season 23 though I find just too difficult to watch, the framing device of the trial is just too invasive, and frankly overly metatextual.

    Colin Baker was a gentleman but in my personal opinion he was the worst actor to play Doctor Who. The first Doctor could be erasable as Patrick Trouton it's said was erasable in real life, but Colin Baker just came across as bad-tempered and annoying and I soon stopped watching Doctor Who. Many years later I got to watch the whole Colin Baker era and having watched them I can confirm that 40 years on my first instinct was correct.

    I love Colin so much, but Mindwarp is the worst classic who story in my book. I'm not a fan of unreliable narrator stories to begin with, but we never got resolution on what parts actually happened and what was made up. On rewatch, it's very annoying. On top of that, supposedly, Colin himself didn't know either and when he asked, nobody would tell him... I'm also very down on The Ultimate Foe - that is another type of story that never sits well with me.
