My grandfather was shipmates with Jon Pertwee during the war. I remember asking Jon Pertwee if he remembered him at a Doctor Who convention when I was a kid and he did!
Season 7 is the best season of the shows history. brilliant, it never falters. "Ambassadors..." is the most underrated story. I've watched it 100+ times and I never get sick if it
It's so hard to not binge shows these days. I should slow down and watch it the way people did back then. But I've become so impatient that it really is nearly impossible. I'm over 50 and even I can barely remember waiting a whole week between show episodes and even MONTHS between seasons! Rushing through it does jumble everything in my head. The good thing is that DW has so many episodes that I won't run out for a good while yet! The Classic Era has been the perfect thing to watch before bed to unwind.
Yes at 9 I was just getting through the week cause Doctor Who would only show on Saturday at 6:00 that was what I was waiting on. Now I want to watch the whole season in a day no problem.
Pertwee is only second to Tom Baker for me. Their two era's(the 1970's) represent the peak of the show. The immense popularity of the show today is because of this time period specifically. Many Americans like myself became a fan of the show when we were watching it as children/teens on PBS back in the early to mid 1980's. And it was primarily the Tom Baker and Pertwee stories. The show was a wonderful escape from the harshness of the real World for us geeky, sensitive people.
Wow, DW played in America? I am GenX and I watched waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much TV as a child. How did I never even hear of it? I had barely even heard the title, until the reboot was about to begin!
Great video. One of the best reviews I've watched of classic Dr Who. Nice to see some appreciation for Colony in Space, agree it's underrated in season 8.
Invasion of the Dinosaurs is so much better as a Target novel! I hope when it comes to be reissued for bluray, the dodgy dinos are replaced with cgi. It's not every dinosaur scene by any means, some are OK. It's mainly the Tyrannosaurus/Triceratops street battle, and the scene where the Doctor is in shot with a dinosaur in the street (the filmed Doctor and videoed dinosaur don't sync properly and wobble dreadfully) that really jar. You also don't need over-elaborate, lengthy cgi here, just some more adequate effects!
Absolutely brilliant, funny, passionate work. I loved watching this video and you have given me some great stories to watch (as a kid I only really remember The Green Death and Robot). Jon Pertwee (and Tom Baker) were 'my' Doctors.Thank You. 🙂
So re: Daemons. I think your analysis is right, popular opinion overrates it slightly (though not much) but I think the reason it's cited so often as an all-time classic is because it is THE quintessential Third Doctor story. It has all the elements his era is known for: the master, the UNIT family (who all have their own little arcs and memorable lines), a lot of great action, good monster effects, and good location shooting. It's the episode that I'd recommend to anyone unsure if they like Pertwee's era, and I suspect many people have experienced it for the first time in this way, thus being very memorable.
Well worth the wait definitely the best instalment in this series so far i don't think I ever clicked on a video so fast before what a great era of the show from start to finish and my personal favourite can't wait for next one
Glad to see some appreciation for Ambassadors and The Time Monster! Watched them both for the first time recently and thought they were very well-paced and had some great twists and great characters all round. Time Monster really is batshit crazy and it’s beautiful
It's interesting to see your views of an era you've visited years after broadcast, whereas I was born early enough to watch this whole era live as it was shown as a youngster. It reinforces my view that when anyone watches TV of the past, the best approach is to remember the year a story was made/shown, and judge it against contemporary shows and view it in light of the news and attitudes of the time. I would say it's a less useful idea to compare it with the attitudes at the time of a review, unless of course that's the specific purpose of the analysis. Having written that, it is interesting to hear the views of someone considerably younger than me, we do agree (mostly!), and besides most views change through time and do definitely depend on how the reviewer feels on the day. I've also enjoyed your Fourth Doctor era review, and I'm up for the Second Doctor next. I admire your production style and editing touches and your knowledge of the subject, and the whole video is an interesting watch right through, which isn't as easy as people think. -)
Hey Al! I just realized I had been watching your channel for a year or two and I just realized i've never subscribed. I loved the pertwee years. Great vid!
Enjoying your videos, thank you. I totally agree with you on The Daemons (say it loudly and proudly) and glad you gave Colony in Space some credit. I was hoping you'd notice that Planet of the Daleks started off as one of the best Doctor Who stories (ep 1 and 2) BEFORE the Daleks appeared and it suddenly became silly and bad. It's like they had a great script going - then decided they needed another Daleks story - so they used the script they had and ruined it.
Ive always found that spearhead from space's ending seems incredibly rushed, like it takes most of the story to get going and then within the last few minutes of episode 4 they defeat the nestine consciousness almost instantly
I always thought with Planet of the Daleks that if the Draconians could have been involved in some way in helping defeat the Daleks, it would have made Frontier in Space feel much more like the first half of an overall Dalek adventure arc.
Here is my series 10 raking the 3 doctors number 2 is the Carnival of monster and nuber 3 frontier in space number 4 planet of the daleks and number 5 the green death
Claws of Axos was always a fav of mine - shame they never appeared again as in their humanoid form they would look amazing in NuWho - their skin could shimmer with different colours flowing over them. But alas knowing NuWho they would ruin them lol
Just to be different, I wasn't disappointed by Frontier in Space, I was disappointed by Planet of the Daleks. Frontier set up all these interesting subplots the Daleks seemed to be up to, just for it to get reduced to one massive Dalek army on one planet in the ass end of nowhere. How do you stop a massive army of that size? You blow up their transport ships. It's almost like someone looked at WWII Germany but learned the wrong lessons...
My top 10 Pertwee (my favorite era): 1- Inferno 2- The Sea Devils 3- The Green Death 4- Planet of the Spiders 5- Spearhead from Space 6- The Daemons 7- The Mind of Evil 8- Day of the Daleks 9- Frontier in Space 10- Invasion of the Dinosaurs Actually I like all of them except for The Mutants.
The “Only the Chibnil ere had political messaging” thing you keep mentioning is not something fans of classic Who ever say, it’s what Chibnil supporters say to support modern Who being political. The difference is that Classic Who had good writing, of the mostly “Show don’t tell” variety. There were situations, clearly alien, that had parallels to real world situations, but the writers of Classic Who never felt they had to beat people over the head with the message - to “virtue signal” as some people call it. The problem with very recent Who is that it’s badly written, not that it’s political. The Doctor gets on a soap box and makes a speech, people go, “but that’s racist Doctor” and lines to that effect. There’s even heavy handed stuff like space white supremacist trying to thwart Rosa Parks. Subtle it isn’t. Honestly, I doubt most people would care if it was done well. It’s not though. Sean Pertwee bears a striking resemblance to his father. We could easily get both him and David Bradley again to bring back the 1st and 3rd Doctors to modern Doctor Who.
Another thing I'm not a fan of in The Daemons is that the Doctor randomly reprimands Jo for calling out the Brigadier's stupid interest in using violence. Even though the Doctor effectively does the exact same thing as her not soon after. Makes the Third Doctor appear really hypocritical.
I'm not sure I've ever come across another Dr. Who fan whose opinions so exactly match my own. Daemons? Overrated! Mutants? Underrated! I paused this halfway through to comment, so I hope you feel The Time Monster is both horrible and astonishing!
Liz Shaw is one of my favorite companions from all of Who. I don’t think I’m alone in that. Anyone who thinks it’s coincidence that the protagonist in Prometheus was also called Elizabeth Shaw is an idiot. Yeah, and Alien isn’t Ark in Space.
The beginning was so cool!!! I started watching Doctor Who on channel 17 as I live 20 minutes from Buffalo NY lol I started during the Pertwee era around 1977-78
Once again our opinions match up almost exactly. Silurians, Inferno, Mind of Evil are all favorites. I also find The Daemons to be overrated. The only thing was that I don't quite like "Carnival of Monsters" mostly because I get really confused with the scenes of the gray people as I can't tell them apart. I love the concepts though and still really enjoy it. I honestly don't think there's a bad story in Pertwee's entire run. The ones that aren't that well written like Time Monster and Planet of the Daleks are super entertaining. It's the only era where I don't skip any stories on rewatch
Aw, I loved the Third Doctor. (Though I wasn't too excited about him exiled to earth. I watch sci fi to travel the universe, not to be stuck on my own planet. Still, it was all great fun. I am currently watching Four's era. First time watching Classic Who!

I struggle to rewatch The Mutants. Yes, the colonialism plot is interesting, but the central mystery of "What's causing the mutations?/What are the Mutts?" is guessable, and even if you don't guess it first time round, once you know the answer - like remembering the murderer's name in a murder mystery - you can't un-know it for any future viewings, rendering it rather boring to watch.

Aw, no, there are special editions of various episodes? This fandom is complicated! I never even knew about the eps that had been lost/destroyed/whatever. I felt like I never got to know the 2nd Doctor or even the 1st as well as I wanted. That episode where 1, 2, and 3 met up was wonderful for me! It gave me a bit of closure in that way. I'm watching on Britbox, so I'm not even sure what I'm getting. One day when I'm a millionaire, I'll buy every season on DVD and figure out what's what. As for now, it's just too much for my poor brain. I'll watch whatever Britbox has and will have to be content with that.
Why do you have to keep spoiling everything ? I wanted to watch all of the classics and after each story, see your review, but you ALWAYS talk about FUTURE STORIES. WHY DO YOU DO THIS ? It's unnecessary. You talked about future doctors at least 30 times in this video or you say stuff like "sadly this character will go away in the next story" whyyyyy. I've had enough, in your first videos it was not too much, but this video you're going too far, that's it I'm done with your videos. You're doing the review of a story and you speak more of OTHER stories during the review what's the point
My grandfather was shipmates with Jon Pertwee during the war. I remember asking Jon Pertwee if he remembered him at a Doctor Who convention when I was a kid and he did!
Glad to see someone else singing the praises of Day of the Daleks - one of the few stories to actually use a time travel twist.
It's the Master, step in time!
Great video, as always! Honestly, the most consistent era of the show quality wise.
Glad you enjoyed!
I came up with the step in time idea many many years ago and finally saw a chance to use it.
The music score done for the Sea Devils was quite ahead of it's time and very memorable.
Season 7 is the best season of the shows history. brilliant, it never falters. "Ambassadors..." is the most underrated story. I've watched it 100+ times and I never get sick if it

Great video. One of the best reviews I've watched of classic Dr Who. Nice to see some appreciation for Colony in Space, agree it's underrated in season 8.
I believe Roger Delgado and Jon Pertwee were best friends and Roger's death is one of the reasons why Pertwee left

The Dinosaurs in Invasion of the Dinosaurs are epic I wouldn't have them any other way. Spoiled millennials. Try that thing called your imagination 😉
You're doing the review of a story and you speak more of OTHER stories during the review what's the point
the daemons was class, deal with it
Do. Not. Fail. The. Daleks.
