Sew an Easy Dress With Me
Hi Everyone!
I hope you are having the best day. I am trying to get back into the habit of filming and uploading sewing but the quality may be lacking, I guess practice will make progress...?
Today’s video is a sew along to Dress 109 from the June 2024 issue of Burda Style. I love Burda patterns and find they fit me really well.
I ended up shortening the bodice to the waist line, adding ties right above the waist line and removing 1/4 inch around the neckline.
Thanks for your patience with me as I work on my video creating.

So I will transport you back in time to mid summer when I was still tanned and planning summer sewing. All the fabric in this video was given to me by my Great Aunt and my Grandma. I am so lucky to be given this amazing gift and none of it will go to waste! In the months s...

Sew a Summer Dress With Me (a sewing meditation)
Very nice and I really love the pattern with the additions.
Oeh! I love all the makes and appreciate the time it takes to copy the magazine patterns! Maybe you could show us more of the process one day because that is the one thing I really find time-consuming. your reversible top is my favourite! Happy sewing!
The dress looks great, I’ll have to make it when the magazine comes out in Australia.
You totally should!!
The dress looks nice! I have a lot of older Burda issues and you are motivating me to dig them out and give it a go again! You always create such wonderful things!
Thank you so much!
Nice, it would be nice to see some sewing techniques while you talk
Great idea!
So pretty 😍 enjoy 🎉🎉🎉
Bem coladinho
How do you get Burda magazines?! I can’t seem to find them’
Are you in Canada? If so I order from Sunrise news. If you are in the USA you can order off the Burda Style website. Chapters/indigo also carry single issues but they sell out fast so you have to time your purchases.
Great pants 😊 I want to be making my own pants someday soon too😄
You should! It’s so satisfying!
Omg that first pattern, the waistcoat is beautiful! Now I want one!❤ The jersey top from April, I would add a thin elastic if possible. You have so many amazing makes! Wonderful!
Thank you! That is a great idea, I will have to try it!
I'm thinking of making the waistcoat from May 2024 yours is so pretty 🤩 The may 2013 dress is my favorite ❤ I've made 3 already, in floral, in white and in black. ❤ Congrats on making jeans! I'm not that advanced yet! I made top 123 as well and it falls off the shoulder too I also top stitched it because I couldn't get the facing to stop flipping outside 😅 What if you save the lace for next issue coming has a whole lingerie section that would be perfect ❤❤❤ happy sewing 😊
I didn’t know there was a lingerie section coming! I can’t wait!
Fellow Canadian! First video of yours I’ve seen and I’m subscribed! I’m currently doing my first sewing project and I’m so impressed with how much you’ve got done! 🎉
Thank you so much!
Jumpsuit is so cute and the white sleeveless dress with the border print is really pretty on you 😊
Thank you!! 😊
Gorgeous makes! 🌹🌹🌹 With your blouse that opens up at the bottom, you can use a hook and eye or a snap to keep the blouse closed. Looking forward to seeing your beautiful plans all sewn up next month. 💖💖💖
Great idea!! Thanks for watching!
I usually thread some hat elastic through the channel at the neck.
I will have to try that, I’m still new to sewing jersey and need all the help I can get haha.
It's always good to see a video from you pop up. You're fun and interesting to listen to. I like your style. I think the online sewing community is quite loyal and forgiving in regards to posting regularity. We love our RUclipsr faves, and recognize that creativity has its own flow, as does all the other aspects of life. Thank you for this makes video; it was great!
I appreciate that! Thanks so much for watching!
2tammymasson, that is so true about the sewing community!
Thank you for this video. You're one of the few Burdastyle-exclusive vloggers on YT and I am always happy to see what you've made. A lot of inspiration. And I also do not like drop shoulders!
Wanted to add, if ever you didn't know this, that the DE site has the pattern pieces of each design, at least for the more recent issues. I always look up the pattern I am planning to do to study ahead of time OR if I'm looking for a specific feature.
Thank you! Sometimes I find it hard to tell from the magazine what is a drop shoulder and I have already cut it out!
Always look forward to your makes. You often make up things I don’t always like in the magazine but look great when you make them up.
thank you so much!!
Gorgeous makes! I particularly love the jumpsuit and the border print dress x
Thank you so much! They were so fun to make!
I am so glad that you’ve still been sewing even if you didn’t have time to video your progress!!! You’ve made so many lovely things. My absolute favorite is the pillowcase blouse. I thought the sleeve you made was more flattering to that style than the one on the pattern itself. That was just so well done! I just wish the person who made that pillowcase could see how you’ve given it a new life. I also really liked the border print shirt dress; that was just beautiful. I also really liked the corduroy jumpsuit; you chose just the right snaps to complement the color. I honestly don’t think you need a belt. If you make it again in a lighter weight fabric, but want a slightly snugger fit, you can add elastic to the seam allowance on the back waist. I’ve done that on pants when my back waist was a little too large but I didn’t want to have to take the whole thing apart. I just zigzagged the elastic down to the seam allowance, stretching the elastic as I sewed. If you don’t stretch it too much, your back mainly looks eased rather than gathered. I do think that jumpsuit would look really nice in a lightweight fabric as well. Years ago I did make a swim suit cover-up in a polyester. It wasn’t as bad as I feared. The fabric looked good with my suit so that was why I chose it, but the looser style accommodated air flow. (I think it was a Burdastyle caftan from a 2008 issue.) You might want to add a bit to the side seams to give you more air flow as that style looks a bit tighter in the hips. You could also play with making the side slits higher. I do love the Valentine’s Day sale fabric and dress pattern. In that color you could make a jacket or bolero and wear it throughout most of the year. I think that dress is going to be a stunner!
Thank you so much for your kind words!! That is such a great idea making an elastic back waistband for the jumpsuit! I will have to do that on a future make. I will look into the finished garment measurements for the cover up because now that you say it, it looked pretty narrow. Thanks for all your feedback!
I also don’t like dropped shoulders, it’s always disappointing when I see it on a pattern lol
I have a hard time telling from photos/line drawings, I will have to pay closer attention
I can't watch the video right now (obv added to Watch Later), but I just want to say I was thinking about where you've been the other day and I'm so glad to see you uploaded!!
Thanks so much! It means a lot!
I love the feeling of wearing something I mended and can be used again! 😎
Yes totally! It’s so satisfying!
I was so glad to see this video. I was COMPLETELY lost on these pocket instructions.
Glad it was helpful! I felt the same way!
Hi Carpy, Thank you so much for yours vidéos I really appreaciate 😊 I live in France and I also sew burda patterns from the magasine burda style. So it’s really great to sew thé models you chose and the result. It’s vert helfull for me. And I like upcycling. I do the same 😀 Do you know any other RUclips person who sew burda style patterns as you ? Thank you again and I am waiting for seeing your next realisations 🙂
You are so welcome! There is a CameliasSewingChannel or Saturday Night Stitch that both feature lots of Burda content!
I am so impressed with the way you use your burda magazines to the fullest. Your plans are stunning ❤
Thank you so much!
Hi Carly, the dressing gown looks great and I wanted to ask which size you chose to make?
I believe I made the size large. The sleeves are pretty fitted so that is the measurement I made my decision based on.
Such a cute skirt you made here! I didn't notice any mismatch myself. If I hadn't been a man myself I'd like to have this skirt too 😅
Thanks for including the line drawings of the models. I'm also thinking of making the top 107 in a floral cotton definitely cottagecore vibes 😊❤😊 I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets lost tracing the pattern sometimes. I end up going off on a different line for a different pattern completely 😅
I'm so impressed with your methodology and how consistent you are! It's amazing that you come up with such great fabric and pattern pairings using almost exclusively thrifted fabric! Such pretty plans!
What about a midi instead of maxi in the black crepe🤔
Using the yellow roses in top 107 is going to look awesome! great re-use of fabric I hope it is enough fabric
❤
Great plans and fabrics. Thinking of sewing the jumpsuit so a sew along would be great
Hello Carly, I took inspiration from you and had sewing intense weekend, but not using Feb or March yet. Agree with you on fills, the shirt dress with flutter sleeves & jumpsuit are in my to trace soon list. I think your pillowcase blouse will be really cute. Agree with you, swap out ties for button closure, this is also on my make, but not as up-cycle creative as you. The 60’s mod dress is all about structure emphasised by belt and banding, will be curious how your dress looks. Several of my cool English Aunties are in family photos wearing those ‘futuristic’ really defined shapes. Could not tell how structured vs drape your fabric is. Good on you for trying wide range of styles…. only swap I’d make from your choice is the Peter Pan collar for the mod dress, but not sure yet. Thanks for your cheerfulness in still deep winter (Sweden) and ideas to get us using our Burda’s more. PS work about to get intense so not ready to commit to sew along yet, but vote shirt dress or cute blouse Best, Samantha
Wow! Great finds Carly! You have so many creative ideas with those fabrics. Can’t wait to see you in all the outfits.
I am really looking forward to see what you make for the wedding :) I also have some weddings this year and definitly need all the wedding guest outfit inspo I can get :D
That’s awesome! We were just invited to another wedding so I’ll have to make 2!! I love sewing occasion dresses though!
Wow, you found some beautiful things. I don't know what has happened to my thrift store, but I haven't bought any fabric in ages. It's so picked over, and they must have new people pricing because it's just nuts. I found a small piece (1/2 yard maybe) of a blue shirting fabric. It was stained on the outside of the roll and they still wanted $2 for it. They roll up the fabric, and I found a really pretty blue gingham, but when I unrolled it to see how much fabric it was, it was all cut into squares, maybe 18" or so, but was rolled in such a way that it looked like regular yardage. I can't remember the last time I bought fabric there. It's a good thing that I have a nice collection. You really do need to make that floral print into a jacket. I think it was in 2008 Burda magazine had a pattern for the cutest swing type jacket with 3/4 sleeves, a rounded collar, and front pockets. That fabric would look amazing in that pattern. I am sure whatever you choose will be lovely. I was impressed that your husband knew enough about fashion to suggest that your fabric might be too dark for September. I do think he might be right. That combination will be gorgeous, but maybe for a little later in the year. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you make.
Yes it’s unfortunate sometimes that they hide stains/rips at the thrift. I also find the prices have really gone up in the past year so you have to be on the look out for a good deal. I can’t wait to sew some of this up!
Incredible fabric haul! Incredible prices! Even the velour piece! What a beautiful color! Everything is just so beautiful!
Thank you so much!
Beautiful fabrics , love fabric shopping ❤
The best! Thanks for watching!
I've heard a saying: sewing and fabric shopping are two different hobbies ☺️ and I agree totally. I looove fabric shopping and your's are gorgeous 🤩
So true! I love that!! Thanks!
You picked up some beautiful fabrics😊
Thank you! 😊
Omg with those finds it looks as if you've gone to a fabric store not a thrift store!
I really lucked out! Thanks!
❤
I love your top ❤
Thank you! I just sewed it up from Burda 2/24!
Currently sewing trousers 108 and I have traced jacket 118.
I hope they turn out great! 🤩
The earrings your son made are truly gorgeous! I am in love with your first two fabrics!! I think they'll look great together!
Thank you so much! I have since finished both projects and love them both but haven’t been brave enough to wear them together (yet)
I like everything you have planned, but top 104 is going to be gorgeous!!! I also really like the idea of the border print with the shirt dress. If you don't have quite enough fabric for your jacket, it might be fun to incorporates some sort of faux leather into some of the piecing. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you make this month!!!
Totally! I have saved the jacket for last as it is requiring the most brain power, hopefully I get it done before I get sidetracked by my March issue coming in the mail!
💯❤
Do you have tips on how you stay on track to get your projects done throughout the month? I love your motivation and wish I had it myself !
I find that if I have a big amount of time to “sew” I use that time to do all the prep work that isn’t as fun as actually sewing (tracing, cutting out, marking, interfacing). Then for the rest of the week I can easily pick up where I left off even if I only have a few minutes here or there. I find making these videos really motivates me too, I feel like it is a sewing journal of sorts!
Thank you! I’ll try incorporating that and see how it goes 😊
