Just read this and loved it as well
Loved The Executioner's Song
I'm doing an essay about this book in college at the moment, I was never a person that reads book to be very honest and I'm very excited to read this tonight.
Loved. :) Read The Infinite Jest because of you and felt the exact same away before and after.
Great discussion of Proust. I found that vol 1, Swann's Way, didn't expose many of the attributes of Proust that you've discussed. It wasn't until I got into subsequent volumes that I realized the extraordinary depth, life lessons, and life-changing thoughts emerged. Like you, reading Proust is an extraordinary experience, well beyond typical story-telling.
I'm Jamaican so hearing this book in audible, in patois!!!!! I was floored. Great great writer!!!
Here's a very interesting comment on the issue of Proust translations by an important and very well known Proust scholar, Christopher Prendergast. I hope you'll find it interesting and thought provoking. 46:25-53:20: ruclips.net/video/SQa5fsMvQn0/видео.html
I'm on page 42 and fully engaged at this point. Looking forward to getting to 100+!
Loved the video! Though my arm was hurting by watching you hold that book up for 10min haha
Very curious about this "20th Century" reading project. Obviously it's well in the past, but if you have a video on that...or make, one, I'm intrigued.
Hey what are your top 5 favorite books. I want to read them
Brilliant stuff. I'm just at page 132 of Swann's Way. Your enthusiasm is so refreshing. I'm really looking forward to all 6 or 7 volumes. I love your non academic approach. Its really funny in the description of the old aunt living in isolation in her room. Also the young narrators joy in reading is so infectious. I hope you continue to do further videos on Proust. You are just a breath of fresh air
Remembrance Of Things Past is the way I recall Proust, and yes I enjoyed his intricate funny descriptive pros.
I am able to see that oasis in your eyes.
Finally a female RUclipsr talks about Proust... I'm literally trawling YT for videos on The Search, and most are done by men. I wonder why? I'm sure the readership is split equally between men and women but it seems to me that most female booktubers focus on more contemporary/general fiction works. Thank you for readdressing the balance!
Please do come back girl ❤
Honor the ballsack
Thank you for this excellent review. I have just begun reading Thomas Mann's, Buddenbrooks for my classics book discussion group's big book "summer" reading. Gives me some context and encouragement to fully engage in its reading.
Oooo Thanks😊 for the suggestion! I just ordered the Weird anthology!
I think the best approach is to just take it as it goes. Some people place too much of a literary analysis weight on themselves when reading Proust. In art, thinking is important, but feeling is more important.
I thought the same as you...I'm not ready to read the book. But, now at 60 does this mean I can now read, or was it all a form of procrastination because I was intimidated by the volume of this novel? I had a roommate in collage who complained everyday about Moby Dick. Because of that, I avoided the book like the plague. But I would say to you in your young reading career, don't fear the books. Just read them, and perhaps reread them in other periods of your life. For sure the books experience changes with your changing points of view and experience, but that is what makes reading fun! Good luck with the reading. I ordered my copy of Swann's Way just this week. If you wait too long for reading some book you may find yourself at my age with a whole to that you have not read!
I do think John's rants about the government could have been reduced and still made the point but i guess he often used it as a segue into another Owen story.
how do you find those stats that tell you how long the books are?
Clarice was such a mastermind when it comes to write about what is behind the thoughts. As you said despite not being a very long books it took some time to finish if you take a reflexive reading and take the chance to dive into her words.
Interesting list ...
Madeleines and tea! Love it. Every page IS gold! I agree. I really like your third point. I wish I found this when I was in my twenties because of the way it helps look at life.Great vlog. Look forward to your future posts on Proust!
do you have the book
My fav book
Thank you so much for this rounded review. I'm presently sitting on my balcony in Thailand reading A Brief History of Seven Killings. I'm half-way through. I have to reread small sections to gain understanding ( like the murder of Papa-Lo). My mother was Jamaican, and it's 'refreshing' to hear the wisdom contained in what one would describe as riddles and also the dialect. I also like how the author's character, Sir Arthur Jennings (deceased) speaks about dying and basically being a spirit on the earth. The book speaks about oppression/ghetto life and what rises from that. Once I have finished the book, I will definitely purchase and read Night Women.
Inspired to rewatch both Olive's and your video. I find that there are books I wish we read and studying in school instead of the ones assigned, but there are some I still love like The Great Gatsby. I was trying to remember my required reading and surprisingly i had to read quite a few plays in Middle school and High school, and it was hard to remember that far back since I'm 34.
I liked this book a lot. The beginning took some time to really get going, but I eventually got into the rythmn. What were your thoughts about the whole aspect of Owen Meany's visions, including the context around them
Interesting because I loved every sentence right out of the box.
New subscriber here. We share many of the same tastes in books. I loved "Deep River." Guess I'm a boomer dad. Yeah, that tracks. Your video on Proust convinced me to finally tackle "Lost Time." So thank you!
Has anybody read the full work in this world and not only swann's way, or even some other volumes?
I’ve read it all from beginning to end. I’ve read Swann’s Way twice in English, once in French. My French isn’t fluent, but Proust is actually pretty easy to read. He uses a tense that translates into English as ‘we used to’ ‘we would’. Sometimes confusing in English. For example, just how old were you when you used to do this or this would happen? In French it sounds more conventional, though you’re still not sure if the narrator is talking about something that happened when he was around seven, or twelve, or fifteen. This actually becomes interesting, part of the' mystery of the book. I like the first two volumes and the last two the best. There are many wonderful party 15:18 15:18 scenes in the book, and I especially love literary depictions of parties. I also love the narrator’s descriptions of art works, architecture acting and even music. His father was a doctor so there’s lots of medical vocabulary used. I’m an MD so this helped me understand the books. Much to love. Definitely worth your time. The drawback is not too many other people have read it. So you have to post online to share your opinion.
What a wonderful review. So positive! I'm going to give it a try.
Have you heard of Olga Tokarczuk's "The Books of Jacob"? I think it's right up your alley! Just found your channel and so far, I'm loving it, I'm a fellow enjoyer of mammoth books lol
Ulysses is a mammoth...because it crushes you. Forever.
Very inspiring lady! 😊
Gaddis has a great sense of humor, you should try JR as I think it’s a much easier read compared to the recognitions
Sick Lingua Ignota LS!
Yea for _Ulysses!_ 😎☘️🤓
Whaaat?? "War & peace" works as a binge-read, considering the length? I am DEFINITELY reading that badboy! Thanx!👍🏼🖤
Hi! I ended up starting Wives and Daughters for the readathon, since my copy is almoooost 800 (794), and I'm of course in the middle of other things, making it all a mess! lol I love all I have read from Gaskell before, and this one is being at times adorable and at times so aggravating, I still don't know where the story is going, and I want to finish it before the end of the month. I'm glad you are enjoying most of your reads :)
I enjoyed watching your March of the Mammoths 🦣 update. I am soooooo behind on my mammoth 🦣 read right now. I’m listening to the audio version of Anna Karenina for this Readathon. This audiobook is slightly over 35 hours in length and my goal was to listen to the audiobook 1-2 hours per day through the end of this month in order to finish it during the month of March….. Between having a reading slump since March 17th and not reading books at all, then getting side tracked with finishing two shorter reads and finding that Anna Karenina is a much deeper read than anticipated I’m only about 12 hours in to this book.
Loved this video, Alex. I am especially intrigued with your description of Ulysses and the true nature of life as we balance between the seriousness of major events and the strange, nonsensical moments, and to have all this going on while wandering around Dublin makes it all the more charming! I have wanted to read it for awhile but seeing this video has pushed me to doing it, so thank you for that! I also wanted to give a big shout out to you and your subscribers on this channel. To me, the 4 important pillars of life are: (i) inclusion, (ii) non-violence, (iii) unconditional loving kindness, and (iv) compassionate acceptance. I feel that you and everyone here demonstrate all of these so beautifully, so just wanted to thank you again for this channel. It’s great to see such positive and supportive content out here these days.
I admire the mammoths project so much! I'm very much pivoting the opposite way this year and focusing on reading shorter books, since I tend to naturally gravitate to books that are 400+ pages. It's definitely helped me get to things I've been putting off forever!
That sounds like fun! Now that the month is halfway through, I am starting to find myself getting excited for April when I can return to a wider variety of shorter books!
I didn’t plan on participating but it just so happened that I finally started Matthew Sturgis’s biography on Oscar Wilde. I’m only 25% in, I read an ebook version and I usually only read on my kindle right before I go to sleep. I enjoy it immensely and I’m looking forward to my twenty minutes of Oscar every night.
You know it is a great read when you treasure the time you spend with it everyday! I imagine an Oscar Wilde biography would contain no dull moments! :)
@@bigalbooksforever I didn’t know a lot about him, so it’s very intriguing to learn so many nitty gritty tiny details about his life now. I also realised he and I probably wouldn’t have been friends. That’s a question I always ask myself when encountering a historical figure.
I’m on page 180 of Middlemarch. If I don’t finish in March I will just keep going and try to finish in April. This is my first March of the Mammouths.
I'm glad to hear it is going well so far! It makes sense to take some more time with Middlemarch since it is so detailed and character-driven :)
I am going to start The Brothers Karamazov this week. Still getting over War and Peace! Love your videos. Please stay with us if you can. 😊
I hope you have the best time reading it! Once I got into The Brothers Karamazov I could not put it down :)
Your discussion of Mirror & the Light is making me want to pick up Bring up the Bodies sooner rather than later! I read Wolf Hall in 2019 I think and really enjoyed it but haven't continued... My mammoth is technically 739 pages but I'm a little over halfway through Tomb of Sand by Geetanjali Shree. I'm read 25 pages a day (need to catch up from yesterday still) and I'm enjoying it but not loving it as much as I thought I would so far though. The writing is quite nice and meandering (and humourous) however
Bring up the Bodies is a downright pageturner in comparison to Books 1 and 3. Each book in the trilogy really seems to have its own feel which I am appreciating! I'm glad Tomb of Sand is going well so far! :)
So good to see you're having fun with Ulysses. I want to read it someday but am still highkey intimidated by it. Not sure if an audiobook/podcast version would help me since I'm more of a visual reader but your excitement is definitely contagious!
I would LOVE to get your take on Ulysses! I recommend waiting until the time feels right, but the good news is that it isn't really all that bonkers at the start which makes it feel much more approachable :)
I think I am going to read Middlemarch by George Eliot this month to participate! Also, are you planning to upload a top books of the year video? I always wait for yours haha
Nice! And yes I will try to get a best of 2022 video up once mammoth season winds down! :)
