Really enjoyed your discussion on the importance of Black History Month in Canada. "I Am Not Your Negro" is great. Baldwin's ability to formulate nuanced and complex answers and statements on the fly is amazing. _Another Country_ is my favorite Baldwin novel so far. That first section just absolutely blew me away.
Thanks! We absorb so much American culture/history here in Canada that it's interesting to think about our similarities and differences. And yes, Another Country takes Baldwin's vision to a whole new level! 🤯
Dang-- that's a shame these Canadian books aren't more easily obtainable around the world! If only Canada's literary exports consisted of more than just Margaret Atwood... 😤 But I'm pretty lucky where I teach-- we have no specific texts listed in the provincial curriculum so there's a lot of freedom! We've started offering around 10 course text options for each grade and the students can choose which ones they'd like to read. We're hoping this way students can take ownership of their reading and find books with representation that matters to them :)
You prolly dont care but if you're bored like me atm you can watch all of the new series on instaflixxer. I've been watching with my girlfriend for the last weeks xD
This video is going to be painful for my bank account. I don’t have a channel but I live in the U.K. and have an ongoing project which is to read about colonial history which takes in all manner of fiction and non fiction. I am not a purist so the links can be marginal but it’s a rich seam to mine. Your list has some very intriguing titles and they are going onto my TBR list. I live in the UK but my parents were Jewish refugees after the Holocaust so it’s not my own history so I can read without too much guilt. I loved Kindred as well, what a wonderful and strange book.
Loved this video! Thank you for bringing attention to Black history in Canada. Every February I like to encourage my peers to focus on Canada's Black history for once. I'm a teacher candidate and have been encouraging students at my placement to do the same. Another great book to add to your list is Black Canadians by Joseph Mensah
Thank you for the recommendation! It sounds like you are doing good work out in schools. This must be a strange time to be doing practicums-- I hope it all goes well! :)
Excellent video. You're a Canadian treasure! Policing Black Lives was a really informative read. I would like to get my hands on more books like that. I have never heard of Sunjata. Thanks for mentioning it. Also the Brontez Purnell! Was it you who spoke about the Viola Desmond book? If so, did you read it? I think every Canadian should read The Skin We're In. Easy to read, eye-opening, contemporary. Fave black booktuber: Rad Reads, Runwright Reads, Brown Girl Reading. Reading for BHM: House of Stone, There is a Country: New Fiction from the New Nation of South Sudan, Until We Are Free: Reflections on Black Lives Matter in Canada, The Home Place: Memoir of a Colored Man's Love Affair with Nature.
I haven't read a Viola Desmond book, but that sounds like it would be cool! Thanks for sharing those channels and titles-- I will be looking into the ones I haven't heard of before! :)

I have Fifteen Dogs on my tbr, excited to get to it ☺️
It's such a gem!!!
My favorite book by an African author, who lives in Zimbabwe is: Zenzele: A Letter for my Daughter by J. Nozipo Maraire. The writing is just gorgeous.
Thanks for mentioning this-- I haven't heard of it before and will look it up! :)
