    Christopher Lloyd is such a great actor! He really set the tone for all the other movie Klingons and the TNG, DS9, and voyager Klingons as well! It’s funny that originally the enemy in the ST:III was supposed to be Romulan (hence the BOP) so the reference at the story’s beginning to honor would have made more sense, but after this film it essentially became canon that Klingons were honor-bound when they hadn’t really been before. Funny how the universe unfolds! Thanks for making this great short video. The full length video is awesome as well.

    • @MetaTrek
      @MetaTrek 3 дня назад

      Sorta reminds me of the way Klingonese evolved over the course of ST: III, whenever Lloyd or another actor playing a Klingon would mispronounce something, instead of having them redo the line, the creator of the language changed the syntax of Klingonese to match how the actor said his line. Glad you enjoyed the short!

  • @McShave

    A self-destruct mechanism might be totally alien to the Klingon culture. To blow-up your own ship would probably be the ultimate shame for them. I'd imagine the Klingon High Command would have a Captain executed for that kind of cowardness. But yes, they clearly don't know the English language either.

    • @MetaTrek
      @MetaTrek 4 дня назад

      It could be an alien idea to Klingons, but Kruge understood what was happening enough to yell "Get out of there!" My big point is that, once he realized what was happening, he should have had them beamed out, instead of just yelling an order that would do no good.

    • @McShave
      @McShave 4 дня назад

      @@MetaTrek Yes, it's surprising any sort of away team doesn't have a constant transporter lock on them ready for an emergency beam out. It also seems off because Torg seems like an intelligent guy (a top of the line model for Klingons). But this scene does work dramatically as it's been stuck in my head for 40 years. I can't hear a 10-9-8 countdown without hearing Kruge yelling "GET OUT, GET OUT OF THERE". Every time.

    I was always under the impression that the Klingons on the boarding party didn't speak English, so they didn't know what the computer was saying, while Kruge knew enough English to recognize it was a countdown. Yes, I know Kruge speaks English to his first officer, but that could be for the convenience of the audience.

    • @MetaTrek
      @MetaTrek 4 дня назад

      The whole back and forth between speaking Klingon/speaking English was kinda a mess in that movie. Klingon's on board the Bird of Prey go back and forth between the two. Perhaps all the English spoken by the Klingons (except for when Kruge is speaking to other English speakers) for the sake of the audience. But even if the boarding party didn't realize what was happening with the countdown, which is very possible, Kruge knew, and should have had them beamed out immediately instead of yelling "Get out of there!"

    Interesting video! Based on your description of Q as a shadow of Picard, I cannot help but think of Moriarty as a shadow of Data. On a side note, Data probably has more shadows than even Picard in the totality of the Trek universe as we know it today. You point out that Q has powers and the Trek crew has technology. Is it possible Moriarty is a Technological Q? Might Moriarty be a bridge, like Bifrost the Rainbow Bridge connecting Midgard to fair Asgard, between 24th century humanity and the Q Continuum? Is it possible the Q Continuum is a true continuum in the sense it encompasses Q's birthed the entire range of thinking beings, from organic to crystal to electronic? If Q is the shadow of humanity, Picard in particular, was he originally birthed from the same power later tapped into by the false god/alien Apollo and his brethren? Would not all sentient species generate this same power? So perhaps one Q is a derived from the hopes and dreams of the Tholians, while another is birthed from the quest for honor of the Klingons, another from the crazy hairdo of the Kazons, an animated cat Q from the Caitians, and so on and so forth? Maybe the nodding, sleepy Q we once saw, the one ready to die, was dreamt of by the Iconians millennia before they ever achieved space travel, a Q now lived beyond his usefulness as a shadow, much like Portal 63? Could not an android dream of electric sheep or, in this case, a technological Q greater in archetype power than himself? Was Trelane in his pompous uniform and attitude, his refusal to submit to failure, and even his tantrums a shadow of our beloved Kirk? Before we all agree the Trek crew have no super powers other than technology, let us not forget Riker, who possess the Beard, a super power unto itself.

    • @MetaTrek
      @MetaTrek 7 дней назад

      Once again you’ve asked a lot of great questions and have raised a lot of great points. The idea that Moriarty is a shadow of Data (and originally a shadow of Holmes as well) is intriguing, as he was created for the purpose of defeating Data. I’ve come to the conclusion that, in fiction, any antagonistic character can be a representation of the shadow archetype, especially if they have some personal connection to a protagonist. In many ways they are a mirror reflection of a them, and if written well, their interaction with the protagonist can teach the protagonist (and us) something new about the protagonist, and/or the protagonist acquires some skill or something else they need to continue on their journey of personal growth. Returning to the example of Moriarty, he could be a conflation of shadow elements from the ship’s computer (or perhaps the subsystems that operate the holodeck), as well as aspects of not only Data, but of Picard, and perhaps even La Forge. I would have to review the episodes he was in to get a better determination, but I do believe that, in fiction, shadow representations can arise from aspects of more than one protagonist, like Dr. Sevrin from “The Way To Eden,” who I view as a shadow figure of both Spock and McCoy. I love your take on the Q Continuum, and I could see them arising from a myriad of sources. The creators are also the created, depending on which perspective you view them from. Your comment has left me with a lot to consider. One thing about the tech/godlike power dichotomy, I’d argue that crewmen like Deanna Troi still possess innate godlike powers, and that any aliens with superhuman abilities are sf representations of mythological gods. Interesting how most of the Enterprise crewmen who possess these abilities are more like demigods, half human/half other. Magic and technology are closely related in many ways, so the tech that the crew relies on is a natural progression from the powers of the gods.

    It’s because Picard is a bigot. He hates non-organic and non-humanoid life. He hates Q from the beginning, hates Data and doesn’t consider him a person, he murders innocent space dwelling lifeforms(Galaxy’s Child.) His bigotry against Q is what led to the Borg showing up early and the horror of Wolf 359 since he had to prove they were ready for what they were out there, when they very clearly were not.

    • @MetaTrek

      I don’t recall Picard hating on Data, is that something from the _Star_ _Trek_ _Picard_ series?

    • @Woopaloops
      @Woopaloops 10 дней назад

      @@MetaTrek Nope. I don’t consider that slop canon. All my evidence comes from TNG and the movies. •In The Measure of a Man, Picard initial wants Data to turn himself over to Maddox before being convinced by Guinan that Data is a person and he should treat him as such. •In The Offspring, Picard scolds Data for building Lal, and tells him he should’ve asked permission. He only ceases when Data points out to him that he doesn’t require the organic crew members to ask for permission before reproducing. •In Clues, Picard is very hostile and suspicious of Data immediately, not extending to him the same level of doubt and trust as he does the organic crew members. •In First Contact, he orders Data to deactivate his emotion chip before the initial confrontation with the Borg in engineering, denying him his right to experience emotion. Something he can’t do with any organic crew member, and therefore should not with Data either. •and last but not least, throughout the show and movies, he treats Data as an expendable object, often sending him first into dangerous situations which ultimately culminates in his death in Nemesis.

  • @Woopaloops
    @Woopaloops 13 дней назад

    I think the evolution of V’ger is the event that caught the attention of the Q. Humans, until then, were an insignificant race, but when Captain Decker merged with V’ger, the most powerful being in the universe, and evolved into new dimensional planes, undoubtedly inhabited by the Q, they took notice. It’s clear by the time of TNG, that the Federation is in steep decline. A strangling bureaucracy and a weakened Starfleet have led to disaster. The Federation allows pathetic barbarians like the Klingons and Cardassians (two empires they could easily wipe out) dictate terms to them on a regular basis. The Maquis have broken off and are defending themselves since the Federation has failed them. Discrimination against mechanical life forms (Data, Exocomps, etc) runs rampant. It is a far cry from the enlightened, strong Federation of TOS. The Q have been watching this in real time. They’ve seen the decline from the great days of the original Enterprise, and they want to encourage the Federation to return to its former glory and back on track to becoming like them. Q even tells Riker that he sees humanity becoming them one day in Hide and Q. Q never was an antagonist, he’s just unconventional in his methods to steer the Federation back on track.

    • @MetaTrek
      @MetaTrek 11 дней назад

      Picard’s encounter with Q was technically the very next thing to happen after V’ger in Roddenberry’s version of Star Trek, so your fascinating idea about the V’ger/Q connection adds an intriguing layer to the Star Trek timeline! One thing about Star Trek that always puzzled me is how a single enemy race like the Klingons, Romulans, or Cardassians could consistently challenge the entire Federation, which is made up of dozens of alien races. It never quite added up for me. What do you think?

    • @Woopaloops
      @Woopaloops 10 дней назад

      @@MetaTrek well it really depends on which empire and which era. In TOS it’s clear that the Romulans and Klingons have mutual treaties and some sort of loose alliance. They exchange technology and weapons. (Klingons get cloaking tech from the Romulans, Romulans get D7s.) On their own, the Federation could defeat them, but the lines aren’t clear on if there was an actual war. The only time the Federation and Klingons did go to war, the Organians ended it almost immediately (but not before the Enterprise takes out a D7 with little difficulty.) By the time of TNG, the Federation is just a shell of its former self. There is absolutely no way the post-Praxis Klingon Empire could take them on. They are constantly in a state of civil war, and they have turned in to backwards savages obsessed with “honor.” They are a far cry from the devious intelligent Klingons of the 23rd century. The Romulans of this time, however are a significant threat. They’ve spent a century building up their forces and honing their technology, so a war with them would be very difficult, but possible to win. The one that is ridiculous is the Cardassians. They are absolutely nothing. Their ships are antiquated, their numbers inferior, and they seem like they’re one food shortage away from total collapse. The only reason they aren’t completely wiped out is because the Federation for some reason won’t take them out, even though they should and would have absolutely no problem doing so.

    Spock later says about V’ger, “Its knowledge has reached the limits of this universe…” That line infers that V’ger explored the entire universe before returning to Earth. There’s no telling what wonders he saw in their mind meld. It’s truly mind blowing to think about.

    My own personal favorite example of foreshadowing in all of Trek is from "Tomorrow Is Yesterday," as Kirk and crew [filmed in 1966] hear the radio broadcast that states that the first manned moon shot happened in the late 1960s [actually happened 1969--after the series was canceled]. PERFECT!!!!

    • @MetaTrek

      I also think that was really cool, and I suspect they may have had some insider information regarding the projected date of the moon landing. It's a shame the moonlanding didn't happen six months earlier, as the interest in space travel that it generated may have saved Star Trek from cancellation, and most likely led to it becoming so popular in reruns.

      @@MetaTrek So is the video AI or did Shatner lip sync himself later? I watched TOS when it was originally broadcast and I don't remember seeing him do this on the show. Outtake?

      It's AI lip sync. I thought it would be a neat thing to see after all these years.

    Even though this is meant as an act of love, no matter how much the critics bad mouth Star Trek, it does not kill my love of Star Trek but increases it!
