    Just thinking ( correct me if I'm wrong) but should damp etc be checked as part of your survey before you buy and surely the former owners should be held accountable for some of the damage and also the illegal fly tipping ? Seems so unfair on you

    • @morrigans_cottage
      @morrigans_cottage 2 часа назад

      So it was checked as part of the survey, and there were minor signs of rising damp which was expected because of the age of the house and it being empty for so long, definitely wasn’t expecting all the rest though! I’m not sure if they’d be liable or not, there was a lot that wasn’t disclosed but maybe they didn’t think it was an issue, who knows 😂 it is hard that it falls on me to fix, but when I was looking at houses at first I was look at ones that were in much worse condition as well, so I suppose it just is what it is 😅😂

    Ais, your tomatoes look to me like they are more hungry than thirsty. Next season, larger pots would be the go and regular liquid feeds with a tomato food. But seriously, home grown tomatoes are an entirely different thing to supermarket tomatoes. ❤

    Hi Aisling, don't be worrying about the cattle, they are better off being outside (yes, even in the rain) they will be less susceptible to pathogens which thrive in enclosed spaces. They are clever enough to shelter near hedges and trees, should the need arise. I'm sure that when the weather dictates, the farmer will know if and when shelter is warranted. Bless you for your concern, but worry no more :) x

    Our beefers definitely are out year round. We do have a shed roof for them (3 sides without covering, 4th side is the back of the barn) and if it is too wet or snowy they might come in for awhile. Like chickens and sheep (our other livestock) if it is quite windy and they are wet it isn't ideal but they'll look for shelter. But, not because it is cold on it's own. For the chickens especially folks tend to put them in a two tight home without adequate ventilation and they end up with respiratory issues. As an aside, there still is a bit of sun most days in the winter and always fresh air which can't be duplicated in a barn. We had some LGDs for several years and they NEVER came under a shelter or into the barn if there was any other option. Definitely no pets. What a learning curve it has been as we learn what our livestock needs :) The other day when I was thinking about "your" cows I was wondering if you had talked to the farmer? You could ask if they would like some winter squash/pumpkins if you ever had access to them. I would always say yes to that since I also grow them for our livestock :) I forgot all about that when I was saying my "no treats" rant. (embarrassed face) I'm thrilled that the modern walls are being removed. The foam board is about my least favorite insulation, and mold is just awful for you. 2 possible wins :) One alternative might be rockwool but I would certainly ask an expert about that.

      That’s really good to know about the cows thank you :) it’s all new to me, and even though I’ll probably never own cows I have absolutely adopted all of these cows as my own 😂 I haven’t talked to the neighbours about treats yet but that’s good to know about feeding them that! And no embarrassed face, you’re sharing knowledge and experience and that’s so helpful :) ❤️

    Hi Aisling, I would say the damp on the walls are to do with the floor rather than the roof.... Rising damp is a problem with old cottages as proper damp proofing in the foundations were never a done thing on these old places... Lovely video as usual, love your enthusiasm though!😀🌸

    • @morrigans_cottage

    Aisling, no idea why anyone would want you to leave plaster on the walls with dampness & mold behind them. Remove anything that was in the house when you bought it. Furniture, fittings, & strip all of the plaster and lath off your walls and ceilings and leave it to dry for a couple of months. You might have to wait untill your grant is approved, but once that is done then I think that should be your first move

    • @carlyonbay45
      @carlyonbay45 9 часов назад

      @@seanpyke8553 yes definitely- that old plaster should have been removed before they put plasterboard up - and there should be an air gap between old wall and new board - the whole thing was just done wrong 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Dear Aisling, new subscriber here :) I just came across this video. Thank you for sharing this renovation journey with us. I'm a technical advisor specialising in renovation of old properties for the last 9 years where I had the pleasure to restore and save several old properties. It has become a passion of mine and thoroughly enjoy it, so I'll be sure to follow your journey. I took a peek at the comments below and I spotted a couple of comments saying that internal insulation is pointless. That is just wrong advice. The question, or rather questions should be: what type of insulation has been used? (ouch, I think they put polystyrene), would you know how thick your wall is (referring to the external walls)? Do you have external insulation? If yes, would you happen to know what type of insulation and how thick is it? Why all these questions? Because you need to understand what the U-value of your wall and insulation is. U-value is simply a measure of the amount of heat that your wall (and insulation) allows to pass through. Obviously, the lower the value the better. To give you an example, a solid brick wall with a thickness of 3 feet (approximately 0.914 meters) would have an estimated U-value of 1.2 W/m²K (watts per meter Kelvin) If that was my property, I would remove the drywall with polystyrene insulation behind it until I reach the bare stone. This would start allowing the walls to 'breathe'. If you can, try to leave the walls to dry naturally for a couple of weeks or more. Ventilate the property as best you can during this time. You see polystyrene is a closed-cell material, meaning it doesn’t allow moisture or water vapor to pass through. In older buildings with solid masonry walls, moisture from the ground or internal humidity tends to accumulate within the wall. Without the ability to "breathe" or allow that moisture to evaporate, it can become trapped behind the insulation, creating an ideal environment for mould and damp to develop! Please forgive the long message but I can't stand seeing renovations taking a painful turn. If you're still in time, please do consider calcium silicate panels on your internal walls. You would need to apply these DIRECTLY to your internal wall on bare stone. I cannot recommend this product enough, having seen excellent results over the years and they're becoming more and more popular in historic restoration projects. Putting here a few advantages of the product for your kind reference: a) they come in various thicknesses, but if you go for a 50mm thickness panel, that could potentially bring down your wall's U-value down to 0.5W/m2K. b) they're fire-resistant c) they allow the wall to 'breathe' therefore any moisture trapped in the masonry is allowed to transpire. Moreover, any excess moisture in the room can also be absorbed by the panel, before it dries again. This creates a humidity-regulating effect in your room thanks to these panels. d) it's a lime & mineral-based product, therefore environmentally friendly. e) Improves the energy rating of your cottage. f). it has a high PH level, (alkaline), therefore very difficult for mould to grow on it! Like I said, can't recommend this enough :) Just make sure you put compatible products on it, such as pure lime plasters and lime paints. Nothing else. Feel free to drop me a message. Happy to help where I can. Best of luck with your renovation!! - Paul

    There is a big damp part in the ceiling you most likely have damp from roof or water tank in roof? Also why insulate internally just insulate external walls trap heat in house. Also on mice entry holes around house are your culprit. Lastly digging out those drains would be a job for a digger initially.

    • @morrigans_cottage

I’m not sure about the insulation to be honest I’ll have to look into it I thought it had to go on all walls! And yeah will definitely need a digger in, the drains are still there just very over grown so I’m going to try do a little until I have the digger finds!

    It seems that it was common practice in Ireland to just cover up the problems, there can't have been an awful lot of building regs going on, I've seen the same problem in quite a few cottage renovations on line. Without a damp proof course I would imagine that you have rising damp although I'm no expert but the plaster has to come off anyway so you can save a lot of money doing all that yourself whilst the grant comes through. No need to panic Mr Manwaring! I'm still sure that the house won't fall down. Stay positive, all that ripping out plaster will keep you warm.😅❤

      It definitely seems to be the way that these old houses were just patched up and problems hidden! At least I’m finding them not and not in a few years! Removing the plaster is definitely a workout in itself!! Onwards and upwards though, I’m hoping to have grant news in the next week or so fingers crossed! ❤️

    I kinda understand why you are poking holes in the walls but if it was me Id tear down the sheetrock in one room and be done with it then move onto the next room. If it has to come down anyway why not just clear the room. I did see the brown water damage in the ceiling and id just get rid of it all then deal with the mold because where there is damage there is a problem. Just do one whole room now api kinda know what's up/

    The way I understand it, it's generally an accepted practice to leave cattle out in the weather without shelter. It's better if you have a hardy breed, and it helps if there's a stand of trees, or big rock face or something in the field for the cattle to shelter behind. You'll usually get better production if you can afford to put your cows in a barn in bad weather, but whether that will justify the cost of the barn is one of those questions that make farming a gambler's game. *I'm not an expert, or even a cattle farmer; & what little I do know is based how things work in the US.

    I was wondering if the past owners are liable for the wall damage. I know for cars they have what they call the "lemon" law where they are responsible for damages they didn't disclose prior to purchase. It is really awful that they didn't tell you about the condition of the walls. It does seem like a toral gut job, but at least you will have warmer, non moldy walls. One my son was about 4, he got a bad case of pneumonia. Turns out in his bedroom, it had black mold all along the base of the wall. I couldn't see it because his bed was up against it. So, mold is a serious issue. It makes me angry that people would just cover it up like that and pretend that everything is fine!! Well, you are determined and you will have a beautiful safe and healthy place when you are done. Like you, i think the cows should have a place to get out of the rain but they have thick hides and it really doesn't bother them. I vote for rain hats and wellies for all the cows .😂❤❤

      They definitely didn’t disclose any of the problems during the sale which is disappointing, but I think it’s on me to make sure I find out these things in my survey? But I honestly y don’t know I definitely think they withheld important information though! That is crazy about your poor son that must have been so scary for you as a parent to deal with, mold really is serious, I’m glad I wasn’t Living there and breathing it in all the time. that crack and damp are at the back of the old chimney has it been removed or do you still have a stack on the roof?

    • @morrigans_cottage
      @morrigans_cottage 15 часов назад

      The chimney and the stack is gone now, I think maybe it was leaking before and the previous owners removed them when they put the metal roof on, the building survey said the roof seemed water tight and the attic dry so I’m hoping it’s all old water damage, I’ve taken the cement off the walls now and they seem to be in ok shape but discoloured in parts - dry though at least! I have a builder who’s going to make sure the fireplaces are all structurally safe and tidied up too just in case there’s damage I can’t identify!

    For the benefit of all viewers thought respond by comment here whilst I do emails back forth with Aisling. In terms of the "journey" she has been undertaking opening up the walls is one that replicated daily across Ireland. All these variations in damage are the result of two common factors. Firstly, ventilation and secondly, wrong materials. So in terms of ventilation, as many will know that limestone and other Irish stonework needs to breath, and just like a human breathing contains moisture and if breathing restricted you are in old heap of problems. So this house is a perfect example of someone putting up stud walls with plastic sheets and plasterboard and leaving behind a ticking timebomb. In terms of wrong materials, as I am sure many will know that it is so common to have used concrete or portland cement, and guess what these are non breathable so you get hidden pools of moisture and eventually the portland cement will blow. On top of that plasterboard is a fantastic sponge, and a fantastic growth media for mold. So what is the solution, ventilation ventilation and ventilation. O and there is the timber for the studs, using untreated wood, or not laying down a layer of damp proof tape to protect the stud work etc. Specifically, the placement of stud framing must leave at least 1 1/2" to 2" gap, yes I know that is a lot of floor to lose and I will come back to that. Then the insulation in between the studs must also be breathable, that means only use rockwool or earthwool, as PIR boards with the silver foil will form a barrier and develop condensation, then a fitment of an intelligent vapour control barrier that takes account of the temperature differences from the outside wall and inner wall to manage the transfer of moisture and then finally plasterboard. Now if you do not have the floor space to lose then there are alternatives including hemp, cork, wood that can be affixed directly to the stone and then specialist lime mortar base and top coat is layered over the insulation. Still takes up floor space but much reduced, obviously a specialist or lots of training / learning how to mix and layer on these specialist lime but if done correctly you most definitely get a traditional stunning looking stone wall finish that can then be painted with breathable paints. Finally, there is the question of the repairs to the stone walls as a result of the moisture trapped, well firstly once the wall are opened up the walls will breath a sigh of relief, you can run machinery to pull the damp air out of the home. Then its a case of chipping out the blown cement and loose stones, blowing out loose materials, moisture and then lime pointing. Lots of you tube examples. Thankfully being internal walls the finish is less important so its a good starter project. As many will have seen on RUclips renovators can re-use the loose stones to fill in the larger gaps and just work your way along each wall. If in doubt shout out to a builder or engineer to have a look and advise, as sometimes it pains me to say but it can be cheaper, safer, quickness and a known structural standard to get the builder in to demolish the stone walls, and replace with concrete blocks and then insulate and plasterboard, Hope that helps everyone that is on this joyful part of the discovery stage of their project?

    The cracks have been created by damp and the plaster will all need to be removed to the stonework. They've just plastered over the stonework with skim instead of sand and cement first hence why the mold & damp was created.

    I think an excavator with a big bucket required for the trash pile. You really cleared that so much! So exciting seeing otherside of the door. The new plan makes such a great way to have good flow through your home. Would using your saw to take chunks of plaster down at a time make cleanup easier for you? I thought you were using a saw at one point. Could you potentially have the drainage and field mowed one at a time and open the land that way, over a few years? I'm confused about what you call a "fake" fireplace. Why is fake, i'd imagine in an Irish climate you want as much heating as you could? Fingers crossed for grant news.

But again thank God you found it all now and not later as I think even behind the walls it can still be harmful. I f I remember right the roof looked pretty dry when you went up so hopefully it is just the hot and cold air now you are in and out that is showing the dampness, Also I think if you could make that doorway into a moving bookcase it would be fab, think I seen it on Pinterest ?? and I agree with the cows they should have a shelter to go to as the rain we get it nasty for them.
