1. Get proper safety boots with steel in plates with that skirting board you left it lying somewhere with the nails still sticking upwards, either remove nails or flatten over with hammer 2. Save yourself a lot of double lifting by having your wheelbarrow beside you, so you throw the bulk of your rubble straight into barrow, instead of throwing it on the floor to lift it again! Hi Aisling. Just wanted to weigh in on the fireplace debate. I think it was where the rising damp is and that is soot on the ceiling. The stones on that part of the wall look darker which is probably soot as well. Look forward to your videos
Thank you so much! Glad you’re enjoying and looking forward to the videos ❤️ definitely think you’re right about the soot! The fireplace is such a mystery!
Great Work!! The grass will grow ....that's an absolute of life here whether you bag it or not!!!😂 Better off not to as then you will have to put it somewhere. With the amount of grass you have, you will have a grass mountain before you know it☘️🌿🌱☘️
Gosh you’re so right I was up to my eyes in clippings when I was bagging it, there’s no solution but I suppose I should be thankful I have healthy land and grass 😂❤️
Hi Aisling, a lot of old houses had large stoves in their kitchens....usually inside a large recessed wall or arch specifically built for them. That could possibly be why you are not finding a fireplace and just the chimney. This may have been knocked out over the years. When I bought my cottage it had a deep alcove in the kitchen with a large old fashioned black stove in it. Unfortunately we had to take it down as it was unsafe and we had to remove the alcove. Not sure what your set up is there but maybe years ago it had the same set up...great to see your videos as usual.. you're a dedicated worker for sure!🥰
You’re totally right that could be it, the fireplace could have come outwards rather than recessed into the wall like I presumed! Once the floors come up maybe we’ll find something in the concrete that will give answers either way! Thanks so much for watching and enjoying ❤️
Oh Aisling, have you smelled the scent from the Mahonia yet (beautiful yellow flowers on the trees you are thinking of moving (please don't 🙏)), it's the most majestic scent and lasts into January. Definitely looks like a fireplace to me which, yes, has been filled in, the cement or grouting is different to the rest plus the rectangular shape is there alright. Damp problem possibly came from a fracture in the chimney stack. Great job Aisling, super progress 👏 👍🏻
I was out by it today and the flowers are coming through and it does smell beautiful! I was hoping to clear that section as a patio but now I’m in two minds! Unless I could safely relocate the plants! The damp could have for sure come from a broken chimney back when they were still there, maybe that’s why they’re gone! I would love to see photos of the house before the last owners got it, I must ask the neighbours if they have any! 😂
@@morrigans_cottage great idea Aisling, I have to say as a horticulturalist it is not a good idea to move the Mahonia however you could remove the fence and push the seating area way back. Just a thought, btw, I'm up and down between Dublin and Mayo so if you need me just give me a shout 👍🏻
@@morrigans_cottage I think Google maps has a way to look back at older photos of the property. I've seen other RUclipsrs do it to see what their old house looks like. I am computer illiterate (and I don't have your street address!) or I'd try to help.
@@debbibowen so I actually tried to search for that but the oldest image is from April 2024 😂 it looks like the van went by in 2009 but the road was blocked off at the time so it never went down to where my house is - so annoying 😂
It would be so cool if you could cut the grass in real time as the sped up version shows.you would be done with it all I. Five minutes!😊 the cows sure seem to enjoy checking out what you are doing, to.pretty soon you will be sipping on a cuppa by your wood stove all toasty warm with the girls.have a great day.💚
Gosh it would be a long video if I did show the grass in real time! Sometimes it takes 20 mins and is fast, other times it takes like an hour!! I love the cows watching, they seem to have been moved again I didn’t see them today which is sad! I can’t wait to have the stove and heating, the house was cold today!!! ❤️
That’s a lot of grass cutting. Could you get your neighbor to put some of his cattle in your field for a few hours and let them eat the grass. Then you could cut what is remaining.
It’s so much grass cutting 🥲 I did mention it to the neighbours but they all have fields and fields and fields of grass for their cattle to eat, there’s an abundance of land around and not many farmers anymore unfortunately! It’ll get done in the end though
@@morrigans_cottage OH - That’s a shame. It would be great if you could get some help with the grass. Cutting grass is one job I hate. It’s like housework, it just keeps coming back.
@@ml3510 omg I liked it at first and now I hate it 😂 the plan is to get a ride on lawnmower by next summer so I can get the grass down and maintain it - then hopefully some animals will help me out but I need to make sure I’m up to speed on animal care and vet costs before I get anymore 4 legged friends! There’s only about 3/4 farmers and they are mostly part time small scale in my local little areas but the fields are endless so we’ve too much grass 😂 once I have the fields dried and cleared hopefully going forward I might be able to get some hay or whatever from it!
It’s a vacancy grant for properties left empty for over 2 years. I haven’t damaged any walls, I’m removing plaster because the walls are structurally unsound and I need to be able to see what the builder will need to fix to get accurate quotes for the grant people :) hope that makes sense

Hello Aisling, thanks for sharing your amazing journey. I'm in similar position... butnibhave tobfuest get planning for extension, then apply for grant. Can I ask you how you are able to start internal wurjs such as stripping walls etc of you haven't gotten grant approval yet? @@morrigans_cottage great idea Aisling, I have to say as a horticulturalist it is not a good idea to move the Mahonia however you could remove the fence and push the seating area way back. Just a thought, btw, I'm up and down between Dublin and Mayo so if you need me just give me a shout 👍🏻
Ah thank you! I will definitely let you know if a second set of hands are needed thank you so much ❤️❤️
@@morrigans_cottage I think Google maps has a way to look back at older photos of the property.
I would advise cutting the grass with a bag so it might not grow so quickly. You are feeding the grass too much by leaving clippings each time.
Ohhhh ok I didn’t realize that!! I will start using the bag! Thanks so much for the tip :)
This is not a criticism but how can you qualify for a grant considering you have done so much damage to the interior walls? Just wondering!
It’s a vacancy grant for properties left empty for over 2 years. I haven’t damaged any walls, I’m removing plaster because the walls are structurally unsound and I need to be able to see what the builder will need to fix to get accurate quotes for the grant people :) hope that makes sense
@@morrigans_cottage OK. Yes now I understand. Thanks. I would love to see someone giving you a hand.
@@marypower8009 there will hopefully be builders out soon, for the grant I just can’t start anything I want to be paid back for so until then it’s just me faffing about! But fingers crossed grant news shortly and then the builders can come in :)
Stripping the walls back is prep' you would otherwise have to pay someone else to do.
@@kyarichards2894 absolutely true, atm I’m mostly just trying to find any damage to the structure so it can be budgeted for in the rebuild, definitely didn’t think this would be done when I bought the place, I think I’ve made it all look so much worse lol!
Hello Aisling, thanks for sharing your amazing journey. I'm in similar position... butnibhave tobfuest get planning for extension, then apply for grant. Can I ask you how you are able to start internal wurjs such as stripping walls etc of you haven't gotten grant approval yet? I woukd really love to start but I thought I had to wait for grant inspection and approval?
Hi! Best of luck with your journey too! You can’t start any works that you’re going to be claiming for - at least that’s what my Coco have told me! I would deffo double check before starting anything but lots of people have been approved the grant no problem at various stages of their build as long as you haven’t started anything you claim for before approval :)
@morrigans_cottage thanks a million for that. Keep up the great work. Love that you're going to help animals too!
Trying to figure out why you are so obsessed with cutting that grass. It’s not going anywhere, and the more you cut it, the more it will grow. You could be spending so much time on other, more important things. Oh well….
I think having the grass cut is pretty important but I think everyone has different priorities and wish lists
