Mark G : The Test Run
Великобритания
Добавлен 15 авг 2006
Welcome to my running vlog, looking at running training, trails, form, drills, heart rate, gear and all the other things I encounter on my journey from a beginner runner to a better runner!
I take a light-hearted and fun approach to vlogging about my progression, as I learn about cadence, posture, what clothes to wear, nutrition, weight loss, how to warm up and cool down properly, running in snow and rain, recovery, and races.
As a new running RUclipsr, I still have a lot to learn and I am documenting the process so we can learn together and have a laugh whilst doing so.
Since starting the channel, I have now run on two 10k races, one half marathon, and one 50k ultra marathon. I've signed up to run another ultra in May 2024 and will be vlogging my training, as well as the race. ParkRun is also something I'm keen to try out in future.
Please SUBSCRIBE to follow along and enjoy the journey. It's free to do so :) Thank you!

Ramping up the training but AI has lost the plot!
In today's video:
I set out on a weekend trail run, as I continue my recovery from an ankle/Achilles injury. Storm Darragh is hitting the country so conditions are a bit wet and windy out there.
Having been working with AI (ChatGPT) to get my training and recovery plans together recently, I look back on the week of training, and also ahead to what's in store for the next week. Things are absolutely not what I expected!

Learning this MASSIVELY improved my LONG RUNS!
ooo I dunno, increasing by more than 1k seems super ambitious! I jest, glad things are ticking along smoothly!
😂 what can I say! My ambition knows no bounds 💪 If I were a super hero, I'd be called Amazingly Ambitious Running Guy Hero. My shirt would have big letters on the front, AARGH! 🔥
Hi Mark, great to see you ramping back up. Don't let AI boss you around lol. I love the strength and mobility that you're doing to stay healthy and injury-free 💪.
That Zwift membership will be good motivation for you to carry on crosstraining 😂 Good to see that you're able to up the running at a faster rate than what AI conservatively prescribed originally!
Good to see you getting back to it, nice and gradually. £18 a month for Zwift? I’m glad I just use the free version (for all I use it).
It looks stunning weather there. It's far worse in Dublin. Glad to hear the achilles is on the mend.
AI coach had obviously been on a risk assessment course that week before advising the huge 1k training leap.
😂 It's health and safety gone mad!
Glad you are getting out there consistently after injury now. ❤ My current 10k training plan is actually whipping me into shape quicker than my half marathon plan 😂its going great 🎉
Good to see you taking on the storm Mark! Have you thought about using the Garmin race specific suggested workouts? You add the date of your race to the Garmin app and it makes a specific plan for that race depending on your goal time that you enter. 😎🤘
You’ve followed a sensible recovery path Mark, seems the AI has been really useful. I look forward to the Strava Athlete Intelligence report after I save an activity, quite motivational😊Get yourself some Sealskinz socks and then you can walk through anything💪
Like your plan for the recce videos 😊
Glad to see you back out there, Mark. Looking forward to your Spire Ultra POV recce documentary. Let's go!
Really excited to see how you plan this 😍😍
Sounds like a great idea. You could add in the in-time footage from (that app that does that but I can't think of) and some pictures along the way to break up the monotonous view of your fingers.
Sounds like a plan Stan! As you’ve said you love being out on the Spire Ultra route, and if it’s of help for others then happy days. Do it mate! And your 7km running for the week is about 7km more than me 🤣
Love this idea, could be fun to watch but also during lock down and when inwas doing treadmill runs I really enjoyed watching 1st person views of walks through various injuries so would could always do a video on the sections at normal speed with some chill music over that people could just watch during a treadmill run so they feel like there outside. Might work might not 😅
Id be inclined to throw in lots of historical and contextual information about the places the race passes. The time then flies by 😂
Chest mount PoV would certainly be a valuable resource! Congratulations on a colossal training week 😁
😂😂 Stay tuned for next week's video, "I tried to run 9km in a week without any training!"
😮
Good idea mate, they would also be good for any treadmill runners 😉
Hi Mark. Glad the recovery is going well. The Spire recce videos sounds like a brilliant idea to me. Could be the start of a series? I would love to see these for all my adventures next year, as I'm sure, would many other first time adventurers. On a personal note, a full recce of UTS25 before next May would be really useful. 😁😁
Sounds like a plan 👏
The videos will be ideal for anyone thinking of doing the race in the future and aye, losing the hands would be good, though it could then be tricky opening any gates 😉
As you may well know, I rather like the old pov’s and while I’ll not be running it any time soon,it’ll still no doubt help me get out of the door. Good to see you back out running pal 🤞
Glad that injury is on the mend - fingers crossed the trend continues 👍🤞
Good to see you back running a bit more mate. Definitely do the video series - it will definitely be something people will keep coming back to year after year. Have you got in touch with h Go Beyond? They uploaded one of my videos to their website so that people thinking about signing up could see it.
Great idea! I love a first person view. I hadn't heard of the Spire Ultra despite being a local lad ( many pints had in the Blue Bell 🤣) Sadly I'm committed to the Carsington 7.5 the day after next years ultra but I'll definitely look at 2026 👍
Great idea! I will be doing exactly this for the Cotswold Way next year. Hadn’t thought about first person view. I’ll definitely include the trickier navigation areas and also maybe break it down CP to CP. Go for it!
Mark, as your videos are the reason I first heard of this local event and signed up for it. I would definitely watch these videos. 👍
Great idea Mark. I think you should keep the wide view as here. Your hands are not a significant distraction and adds something in a way. A wide view is more immersive and useful, in my opinion.
I think that sounds like a superb idea with the chest mounted recce videos Mark. 👌 Glad to hear the Achilles / ankle is playing ball mate. Long may that continue! 😎🤘
I know its not an ultra, but i filmed my half marathon by chopping it up, like you said. I made it four parts, but I think if you do speed through for a certain amount of it, that would work well. 😊
Looking good Mark! Keep it up. When is the half and ultra in 2025?
Thames, Richard. I'm feeling decent at the moment. The half is mid February, and the ultra is in May 👍

Hi. Thanks for watching 👍🏃♂️
Fingers crossed for you it is all healed! Good news 😊
Thanks a lot, Gary 👍 The signs are good so far 🤞
OMG! You have your Christmas 🎄 up in November! It’s November 😂 Nice work with the recovery and run, but I’m struggling to get past the tree 😂
😁 yep! I'm surprised more people didn't comment lol. I leave the girls in charge of that sort of thing. It appears they couldn't wait 🎄😄
Your video: Completed it Mate 🤣🤣
😂👍 cheers mate!
Tinky Winky, a Christmas tree and some barking dogs 😂 a veritable tapas of content! Glad it's all going pretty well - just keep listening to your body and you'll be back to full strength in no time!
😁👍 yes, I'm trying my best not to let the videos go stale while I'm in recovery mode!
Great to see you running and moving again. Glad to hear the legs are refreshed and feeling strong. The weather is mad eh? I never know what to wear heading out. Too hot, too cold, too many layers, not enough layers. 😅
Cheers mate. Hopefully you get much better weather in Valencia ☀️👍
I’d rather cross a muddy field than spend a night with Uncle Monty 😂
😂 I think we can all agree on that one mate!
Well done mate good to see you overcoming setbacks. A bit soggy out there, good job there were no Randy bulls… or uncle Monty in those fields 🤣🤣🤣 suppose you could have asked Danny to roll you a Camberwell carrot and chilled for a while 😁👌
Weird how youtube works, but just found your account and have subscribed. I am battling with plantar fasciitis but seem to be over worst of it and starting to run more. My focus is 10k at the moment but interested to see how you approach a half it just might inspire me to do one in 2025!
Hi Paul. Yes, RUclips is a weird and wonderful place. Good to hear that you are getting over the injury. Some of them seem to take forever to heal. I guess the key is not to rush things on the way back. I did a 10k earlier this year and it was good fun, if a little wet on the day! Best of luck with your training 👍
hahaha the beginning is epic hahaha I feel like you are making this video to prove to your Achilles who is boss. So happy you are able to get back at it! Wow that field is a mess!
😂👍 I'm having to really work for video ideas while the running is on a back burner. That field will be chest deep in crops by the summer ☀️ I think I prefer that!
Glad to hear you are starting to feel better! I like the rocky inspiring music sprinkled in there haha I will have to follow your suite to help nurse my ankle. I am glad that you are looking after your body!
Thanks, Jen 😁 I hope your ankle is getting better. It's even harder to rehab these things when you're in the middle of ultra training. You can do it though 💪
Glad the recovery is going so well for you Mark. As always, a sensible approach. I notice that you have a strange compulsion to peer into holes. I am sure that Freud (Sigmund not Clement) had something to say about that. Good to see you back mate.
😂😂 thanks mate. Not sure about the hole thing. I really must look into that!
My most common injury is calf strain, thankfully I’ve managed to avoid the dreaded Achilles injury. You’ll be be back before you know it
Calf troubles are no fun. Mine tend to be the first thing to feel over worked during a training block. The Achilles thing is new to me. Thankfully it seems to be recovering well. Thanks a lot. I hope your calves are behaving themselves at the moment 👍
Is the Christmas tree up early or just left there from last year to save a job?
😁 I made sure to buy a house with the Christmas tree pre-installed. Can't be messing about with that every year!
@@markg99 Never too early 🤣🤣🎉🎉🎄🎄
Progress! The plan looks liek a sensible one, lots of listening to the body for a while for sure!
Yes, getting there slowly 🙂👍 I'm enjoying the mixture of activities in the plan at the moment. A big 4k run coming up this weekend 😁
Ooof yuge mileage!
@@AMostlyFunctionalJess 😎💪😂
Good to see you back out there again!
Thanks mate. I've enjoyed the break but I'm more than ready to run a bit more, despite the less than glorious weather!
Mark, great to see you back out on the trails and running! Sensible to go around that mud field, looks like some fun weather. Hey, I think Torrent's don't age like fine wine, time to upgrade lol. Cheers.
Thanks mate. I'm finally starting to see a bit of real wear on the Torrents. I was curious to see how long they would keep going. I do more walking than running in them now.
Good news Mark! Slow and steady 👏🏼👏🏼 Also fair to say it’s colder up north 🥶
Cheers Nick. It is a bit chilly up here 😁👍 Scraping my car in the morning is becoming a fairly regular thing!
@ Ha, joy of joys… currently my windscreen is just misting up, but I’m sure a real cold snap will get us southerners eventually 😬
Promising news !! As Brodie Sharpe likes to remind us though, that’s the most dangerous time, as most runners dive back in again too much too soon!! Yeah it was weird Sunday 17° here after 5cm of snow during the very chilly week … me too I wore way too much for my run, I didn’t trust the warmth at all!! Cheers Mark 🙋🏻♀️
Hi Bev 👋 Thanks for the timely reminder not to go too hard too soon. I'm holding back quite well for now but it's easy to get carried away. It's gone back to just being cold here now. The snow has thankfully all melted.
@@markg99 The snow was so beautiful while it lasted though... I had a gorgeous Thursday morning walk in the forest with a friend and her dogs and a gorgeous night training session in the forest with the club 🥰
