    I set off to explore the Monsal Trail Half Marathon route, as I prepare for the race on 27th October 2024. Visiting the Bakewell area again stirs up some memories from my past, which I feel compelled to discuss along the way.

    You’re 100% right about looking after our health - the work we do now gives us the lifestyle we get in our 70s and 80s

      Cheers mate. Totally agree. My main goal is to be strong and mobile in my later years, and have that quality of life. The other option doesn't bear thinking about...

    Not a question but a statement… your kitchen is really nice 👍😁
    Nice to hear a bit about your own past Mark. Those kind of memories will stay and be cherished forever. I still live in the area that I grew up in and my parents are in the same house. I visit most days (I’m their carer) and everywhere I look is like a blast into the past.

      Thanks! :) My wife made most of the decisions when we got the kitchen upgraded so I'll let her know.
      It is nice to be able to visit the area I grew up in so easily, as we didn't move too far, but the old place does change over time, so it's also a bit of a surprise sometimes, how much has changed. Glad to hear you get to see your parents regularly. That's a real blessing :)

    Lots of memories on today's run, running can do that to you. I've a fond memory of a family holiday & when we visited Bakewell, my memory is of swans on the river & a visit to the Bakewell Tart shop 😀 The 1/2 marathon route looks straightforward & saying hello to folks is a must, especially if they're not expecting it 🏃‍♂

      Yes, I was doing a fair bit of reminiscing on this one. Was a nice morning out, mostly alone with my thoughts, but for all the tourists, runners, walkers, and cyclists to say hello to :) I've got a video idea on my list, where I'd like to run from home, to the Bakewell Pudding shop (Tart if you prefer!), have a tart and then run home. It think it will be a marathon in total :)

    Well done mate, another great video as usual. The memories of lost family and friends are always so poignant. Looked like too many people there to say "Good Morning" to everyone. Wife and three daughters! Bet you have to queue for the bathroom(s) in the morning. No wonder you moved to a larger house. Five in my family as well but we just kept adding bathrooms. Now I am alone, I have a choice of three! I remember standing on the Monsal Viaduct with my wife, stepson and two daughters in 1984 and your view brought back a happy memory of the holiday. Good luck with the half, bet you will beat the target.

      Thanks a lot mate. Appreciate the kind words about the video :) I wasn't really expecting to be talking about old memories on this one, but the place just brought all of that stuff to mind. It was nice to have a think back to some of the good times, and the good people from my past.
      Bathrooms are definitely a big requirement at home! Thankfully we're all on slightly different schedules most of the time so I can get and out while the others are doing their own thing!

    Hey Mark, it's an advantage when we can recce a trail race. I love out-and-back courses! Great video. Be careful what you wish for when you tell your audience to fire away with questions lol.

    • @markg99
      @markg99  6 дней назад +1

      Hi mate. Yes, the out and back format should be good, especially with it being mostly downhill on the way back, nice and gentle. I'm looking through the questions I've been asked now! Hopefully they've been kind lol

    Beautiful course to follow for a HM. The view off to the side around the tunnel was spectacular. Definitely a place I need to get up to and try some running on as I've not ventured up that way much in terms of my running. We've also made moves for similar reasons in the past. Sometimes an area's value can be so overinflated, that moving somewhere else becomes a no-brainer.
    I would take some light and quick road shoes for the HM race day if I were doing it - looks nice and firm underfoot and probably drains quickly too with that gravel if it were wet. If you've got some that you do a lot of running in and you're used to, they could shave up to a minute off overall time over slightly heavier trail shoes!

    • @markg99
      @markg99  6 дней назад +1

      Hi Sean. Yes, if you can get over to the Peak District, it's definitely worth it. I haven't done enough running in the peaks, given how close I live to them. Don't go looking for houses there, unless you happen to win the lottery :)
      Totally with you on the shoe choice. I'm planning to wear my lightweight PUMA racing shoes on the day. I'm just putting a few miles in them first, to get used to them. They fit like a glove to be fair, so should be good.

    Hi Mark, I’d be happy to do my first half in 2:10 but it’s unlikely. Very pleasant to join you on this training half, I know the area pretty well as I often rode my motorcycle to Matlock via Bakewell on the A6 and still have a Z800. Sorry about the premature loss of your dad and best friend, that must have been very difficult for you. Good luck in the 1/2😊💪🚀. 1:42 is quick!

      Hi Andy. I think a good amount of the battle when it comes to getting a decent time in a race, is finding a course without too many hills. This Monsal Trail one seems pretty reasonable. 99m of climbing, and mostly downhill on the way back :)
      Matlock Bath seems very popular with motorbike riders. Quite often see them all parked up on the main drag there. I've always been a bit scared of them, and my mum said I was never allowed one anyway lol.

    It's always a strange thing, revisiting places where you have strong memories of loved ones who have died, but a strangely peaceful experience I often find.
    QandA Questions: Do you have an absolute favourite running route?
    Which race (or races) has challenged you the most, mentally and physically?

      Hi Jess. Yes, I quite often get memories of people I've lost when I go back 'home' to the Bakewell area. It's nice to have a chance to remember them and to bring up some memories linked to various places around there.
      Thanks for the questions; I'll get them into the video :)

      @@markg99 it comes and goes mate but I’m not really consistent enough with my strength and conditioning, but I think it’s more than just “runners knee”, under normal conditions it’s fine, but if I put pressure on it I can’t bend it past 45 degree without it feeling like something going to go pop or snap 🫣 think I might need an MRI to see exactly what the problem is.
