Tru OIl Neck Conversion, With Color and Re-Shaping
Another way to go about modifying your neck finish to have Tru Oil. It's a somewhat simple process. Other's have their own way, this is how I do it. The idea was to replace a worn out neck with another, but the replacement needed a little work to get the feel of the original.

1935 Martin D 28, Correcting Relief, and Making a Proper Saddle
Просмотров 1952 месяца назад
I had a 1935 Martin come in that was not playinfg as well as it should. It does not have an adjustable truss rod, and this is also the first full year after bar frets were used. Here are the steps I went through to get the guitar back to 100%.

(Part 2) 1959 ES 335 Minor Binding Repair, Refret

Second part to working on this ES 335 from 1959. This guitar needed a refret badly. Minor cosmetic issues with the binding are taken care of, as well as aging a replacement Tone Pros AVR2 bridge. Check out part one if you haven't seen it yet. ruclips.net/video/N-SLtsHtHHs/видео.html
(Part 1) 1959 ES 335 Correcting Bridge Placement, Refret, etc..

Part 1 of a repair job to this 1959 ES 335. At some point in this guitar's life, it was owned by Neil Schon of the band Journey. It currently resides in Minnesota with it's new owner. Over the year some improper work has been done to this guitar. In this video I correct where the bridge is locate, with minor finish touch up. More elaborate work could have been done, but by request of the owner,...
Mill City Lutherie In the Wild, With Self Evident Part 2

This is a compilation of live clips. Conrad Mach of the band Self Evident playing his Hennepin model guitar at Zhora in Minneapolis on April 26th 2024. The only mic is the one on my camera. The Hennepin is a slab body, set neck style guitar, reminiscent of a Les Paul. Lighter in weight due to a flat top. Partial Refret

A somewhat common option when it comes to worn frets. If only a certain number are worn, just replace those. The nut will need replacing at the same time. This video demonstrates the process.

A customer brought in his Grandpa's guitar to have work done on it. Video includes bridge re-glue, new bridge plate, refet, and other minor maintenance. This guitar is well played, but luckily not in need of a neck reset or and major finish work.
Jeff Beck Body Mod, with aging.

Pretty simple procedure on this one. But I have added a wood aging technique per request of the customer. If you attempt this on your own, and the aging goes to far, simply sand back the wood a little to get a lighter result.

1957 GoldTop Les Paul Refret, Nut, Bridge
Просмотров 8215 месяцев назад
Vlog of a 1957 Goldtop Les Paul getting an overhaul. I do a refret, new nut, and a bridge replacement. I also discuss the reasons to do, and not to do certain steps in this process. Such a rare guitar, you do not want to do anything irreversible. This guitar was apparently regretted before, but the fret were clipped at the binding edge, rather than the tang tried to allow the bead to rest on to...
Tru-Oil Neck Conversion "ASMR"
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Okay, not actually ASMR. I was most of the way through the job and realized I hadn't narrated anything. This customer wanted a Tru Oil finish on his strat neck. It's a reissue neck with a poly finish. A razor blade takes the finish off quickly. I don't do this with lacquer necks since the finish is much thinner. The raw wood can be stained or left as is. This job was done without color.
1937 Martin OOO-28 Refret, New Nut

I recently had the pleasure of working on this beauty. This vintage 1937 Martin has been around the block, but still in great condition for being nearly 90 years old. It was in desperate need of a refret and new nut. I talk about the process as I work on this guitar. It had obviously been refretted before, as well as having had a neck reset, so much care was needed to not do any damage to the f...

    In my case the jack plate fell out b/c the bolt was so loose. I got it tightened back on, but I'm noticing the washer mine has is not a lock washer. This electro socket looks so much better as far as stability. I don't know why Fender wouldn't just use those.

    You make it a point to point out that you rout to the base of the factory nut but then end up putting a large shim anyways. Wouldn't a few measurements have told you to just use the smaller shim and not take out neck meat unnecessarily?

    If you've had issues mixing stain and Truoil in the past, try this: mix two parts stain with one part Truoil and 1 part isopropyl alcohol to thin it out. That's a good base recipe, and you can adjust as needed (more stain for color or more alcohol to thin.) Most of this issues that come with mixing stain directly into Truoil are due to the differing viscosities, and the alcohol is a mediator. It also helps the stain dry quicker into the wood so that it doesn't get pulled out with sanding.

    Changing where the nut begins would have a pretty significant impact on the scale length. Your bridge would need to move to compensate this wouldn't it?

    • @MillCityLutherie
      @MillCityLutherie Месяц назад

      The only time the front edge should ever change is for an LSR nut, or if you are doing a Buzz Feiten mod. If the edge of the fingerboard is cut then you need to fill in what was removed.

    Great job man! One question, the sustainiac humbucker can split? I mean what happened in the second position of the pickups selector? When it splits the neck humbucker and plays it together with the middle single pickup. Thanks!

    • @MillCityLutherie
      @MillCityLutherie 2 месяца назад

      It's not a humbucker at all. One side is just a plastic shell to make it look like a humbucker so it can replace a humbucker without looking weird.

      @@MillCityLutherie what?🤯 Do you wanna tell me that they're all single coils? The sustainiac humbucker that I have on my schecter is actually a single coil? So in conclusion you're not "losing" the second position? Thanks for the reply!

    It sucks you have to do this for a brand new guitar. Which is my situation. I like that it's a bolt on and easy to do, however, I don't like having to take it to a repair shop to have done. When I checked with the straight edge, the neck angle was too low and not slightly above the bridge, it was below the top of the bridge by ≈ 1/16". For a new guitar from the factory I find this unacceptable. It's a hassle for the consumer seeing how my Taylor repair shop is relatively far away and a pain to get to. Most likely won't buy another Taylor.

    • @karelenhenkie666
      @karelenhenkie666 Месяц назад

      Have a guitar (also taylor) with the same problem with an even worse angle. Pretty disapointed in that and it doesnt say a lot of good if a guitar needs a reset earlier than about 15 years into its life, let alone within 1 year. Makes me wonder how solid the neckblock is

    I'm glad my T-style has a Les Paul-style jack with a rectangle metal cover piece. I've had to tighten it once in a couple of years and all it takes is the Bullet jack tightening tool from whatever that company is. It works on most standard jacks. Funny part is that I bought an Electrosocket when I ordered the guitar, expecting it to have a standard Tele jack. I could have made the hole bigger and used the E-socket but it would have still had screw holes around the hole so I just returned it.
