Goodbye Photoshop, Hello Krita! Featuring RED GIRL

After over 20 years in Photoshop, I'm switching over to Krita. I don't really agree with Adobe's direction as a company, but also using a totally free app really aligns with my mentality for this channel. So content will refocus on Blender and Krita as the POWER DUO free programs for this channel. Onward! Download Krita free! krita.org/ My brush pack [ coming soon! ]

Ooo.. nice catch. I totally forgot to edit the invite when I went live. Thank you so much for letting me know 🙏
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Good quality material!
Happy to help! Got about 20 more videos incoming ha.
I rewatched this video very often to help me not lose track of what I want to do. I used to find myself getting lost in my art to the point where I didn't know what I wanted to work on next in a piece. Ever since watching this video, that has changed. tysm Human with Frog Voice
Super happy to hear that. I've evolved the theory a lot since this video, actually. I've worked with about 400 students since when it was recorded and I've definitely found that this particular well goes deeper than my flashlight had hit prior. I'll be posting a kinda "part two" fairly soon. Thanks for sticking around and commenting 🙌

I believe it was just two free songs from mixkit that I stacked. I'll check the source file when I'm back on the workstation.
I love environment and I always struggle with placing stuff in perspective practicing that weakness is my only way out thank you so much
This is really amazing and very easy to do thank you so much
Happy to help! I'm recording a bunch of content and hope to publish this summer. Will cover perspective very in-depth. If you want access sooner, find me on Instagram and I can send you link to some stuff that's already privately uploaded ✌️
1:54 what is going on there? He is using brush, not eraser, but is erasing - see 3:44, background color change. Anyone please explain?
Hi! So at 1:54 I'm using a mask. I put a mask on the tree layer and then I selected the mask. I switched to a brush which is good for leaf shapes and I painted on the layer while the mask is selected. Since my foreground color is black, anywhere I added paint to the mask hides the layer content. Using this method I can take the simple original shape of the tree and "cut" leaf silhouettes out. At 3:44 I'm simply painting below all the other layers with a big fuzzy soft round brush. This changes the sky color while the layers above in the layers panel remain unaffected.
@@SourPlanet Got it! Thank you, sir!

It's incredible how exactly you described how I feel about painting landscapes, is frustrating right now but I hope some day I'm going to enjoy it as it happend to you. This video inspired me to improve 🙌🏻
Happy to hear it!! This is a part one of the philosophy. I've just started recording new content for the channel and part two video is next in line. So if you need more direct actionable advice, that's coming!
I have a problem. I can’t add a principled setup because it says active mode should be of type BSDF_PRINCIPLED and its disabled. I’m trying to change the textures on my model to pbr textures so how do i fix it even though i have node wrangler enabled
amazing! thank you. that's exactly what I needed.
Awesome. Enjoy!
Everything about perspective in my mind just got snapped together. Thanks.
Im loveing Krita more and more these days. I'm excited to see whats to come with your content.

Happy to hear it 🙌
Thank You
You're welcome 🙌
I'm so happy to have come across this video. THANK YOU this saves me so much time on cell shading in photoshop! Also I wanted to say your final result came out awesome. How were you using "levels" and "hsl" at 16:30 for the sky reflection? I think it's so interesting how many layer styles used for the rendering. I'm so use to using these more for photography and retouching I never thought to see these tools utilized for painting the way you did it!
You're welcome! Yeah, I use a ton of photo editing features. Helps the painting have more variety and subtle tones. For the sky, I used an adjustment layer at the top of the soldier's clipping stack. So it effects everything related to the soldier. I tinted everything to be a lot more blue. Adjustment layers come with a mask attached to them, so I filled that mask with black-- which hides the effect completely. Then I grabbed a brush and painted white into the mask of the adjustment layer where ever I wanted ambient blue skylight on the soldier. White on the mask reveals the adjustment layers effect, which "paints" the blue tint into our view.
Dude, so excited you're back! Eagerly awaiting your next videos!
Thanks man! Nice of you to say. I've had construction in my building that's so loud I can't record 😭 Supposed to be done this month tho.
Very helpful video Thanks
You're welcome. Glad it helped!
Krita has a great animation timeline as well
Oh yeah? I had no idea. I very rarely do animation but I'll definitely check that out.
@SourPlanet Its quite a bit better than the photoshop timeline I’ve found. Especially for drawing and layer handling. Dermot O Connor has great videos showing how use the timeline to traditionally animate in Krita
Hi, three years ago I wrote a script for lasso filling, you can get it for free on my channel under the video there is a download link. Adobe Photoshop - Script Lasso Color Fill
Your insight is really helpful, I’m gonna do it this way! I’ve been so frustrated as there’s so little info and barely clear instructions for bg studies, like everytime I want to make a bg for my characters it always looks empty and lifeless, so ig that should be my focus for the studies
That's a great thing to focus on. One of the most common issues with student and early portfolios is that backgrounds aren't figured out. I'm working on a video about specifically that topic too!
thank u so much!!!
You're welcome 🙌
i have those same 5 textures in 4k but when i select them with ctrl + shift + T, it just gives me an error... :(
What does the error say? You should see either a pop up or a line of text in the very bottom bar of the main Blender UI.

We've all been there. I still get there, for sure. Hit me up on Instagram (sour_planet) if you want a second set of eyes. We'll figure it out together.
Can we rename this video to Ctrl +Shift + T, how can someone remember that.
Slap a sticky note on your monitor 👍
Krita is becoming better and better! ❤ I wish they add vector layer that can be drawn using brush other than calligraphy brush. Someone is already requesting it, I hope they will add it soon
I haven't investigated vector tools in Krita at all yet. I've been using Affinity Designer for vector. They have a vector brush engine. Every single stroke is a vector. Which means you can change the brush tip *after* making a mark. You can also change the shape of the mark, as it's just a series of editable points. It's pretty amazing! But yeah, Krita has come a LONG WAY since I last used it. Leveled up very similar to Blender. Now they make a perfect duo.
@@SourPlanet I never tried affinity, it sounds like what clip studio paint does! Every stroke of brush is vector, you can change size, type of brush, pinch it in midway unlike raster layer, it was awesome feature! Yes! Open source community really awesome, what they have achieved so far make them even more competitive in properiarty program. Blender is great Krita catching up Godot too
Living in the Bronx myself I didn't even know there was a giant bike road like this in New York aside from the Van Cortlandt Park area which is in the Bronx!
The really open one is the bike/running path in central park. Everything else is the little citywide bike lanes and of course weaving through traffic like an idiot 🥳
@@SourPlanet The traffic is so dense in Manhattan I always thought it was near impossible to have fun riding anything other than in a car. I do appreciate the rise of bike lanes though
@@sanjaux Some areas are still pretty impossible for sure. I ride BMX usually and thats always a blast. I don't think I'd attempt any of my routes on a bigger bike though. Gotta stay nimble out there with all these crazies road raging through congestion! I'd love to hit that Van Cortland path someday. Looks great from videos.
Hope to see more art made in Krita 🎉🎉 Lets goooo 💪
You'll see it from me, at least! I've been using it for several personal projects and I'm dropping all the assets and images in the next few weeks.
why not clip studio paint?
I wanted to go for a free app. I love Clip Studio too, and I'll definitely be putting out videos for it as well.
I always refer to this combo for anybody who wants to try and dable in digital art, 3d texturing, modeling, sculpting, Concept art etc... Krita and Blender together are like cheating. Add Godot 4 to the mix, and this is busted. If anybody wants to support the developpmenet of Kirta, it is at 12,50€ on Steam and i think it's worth the price.
great to see more people leaving photoshop. regardless of where they land. i switched to krita 4 years ago and basically made a full switch to linux entirely going on 2 years now
Photoshop really has moved in Stockholm Syndrome territory. They were on top for SO LONG that people can't imagine anything else being good. Same for Wacom tablets. It's totally possible to get a Cintiq alternative for under $200 and a free painting app, and use it for pro work. It's my hope that people will see that and continue to ditch Photoshop. Their stance on AI is untenable, imo.
@@SourPlanet 100% agree!!
@@Artist1974CH 🙌
Amazing! I love krita anda blender. I tried many programs like Photoshop and Corel painter, but I never felt confortable with any of those programs
I could definitely see that. Krita is a very "slim" app. Blender is the same way. They whittled down the feature set to be robust yet not bloated - and kept the interface uncluttered.
what about Gimp?
I mention it briefly in the video. I have tried Gimp a few times over the years. It's never felt right for me. I gave it one last shot and simply couldn't get pressure sensitivity working correctly on either my laptop (Wacom EMR) nor my workstation (XP-pen). Figured if it was meant to be it woulda been by now. Krita, on the other hand, went smoothly right from the getgo. So I took off running with it and decided to permanently shelve Gimp.
@SourPlanet Understandable I also tried gimp but for some strange reason it like having being used to Fruit Loops and downgrading to fruit rings, an off-brand cereal.
@@TacoBear_Studios baha I'll try not to steal that analogy but it's pretty damn good.
Krita is a great program. I have clip studio and krita and jump back and forth depending on which tools I like to use. Clip studio the only tool I wish I had in krita is the vector blob kinda brush. can draw a shape and it instantly fills with the foreground color. doing lasso and then filling it with a color is the same kinda thing but breaks my flow.
I also jump back and forth.. and totally agree about the lasso fill thing. Every program should have that tool. It's simply incomparable. I'd probably pay the cost of CS just to have it in Krita ha.
halloo just find your chanel, your art is amazing
Aw, thanks. That's very kind of you 🥹
Well, then I'd say welcome to the Krita Gang, my dude. I switched myself from Clip Studio Paint when I converted my setup to Linux so we may learn this together ^^ Already found some pretty nice settings in the brush engine and interesting things in the filter menus.
Love me some Clip Studio. My favorite paid app for sure. Krita brush engine is super fun. Whatever it lacks from Photoshop it more than makes up for in actual usability. I haven't messed with Filters at all yet. I'll check 'em out!
@@SourPlanet dont even get me started on ai.
@@alex_oiman 100%. That topic is so infuriating that if I bump into someone who isn't also immediately ready to go to war over it, I'm taking them to war on the spot. The line is in the sand and anyone who knows anything has been on the right side of it for a while now.
@@SourPlanet infuriating and depressing at the same time. commissions have dropped drastically and i'm seriously looking to change fields to 3d. also. i've just noticed i originally replied in the wrong comment thread.
@@alex_oiman I totally understand. Switching career paths myself. I work with a lot of students and a lot of them are having similar concerns for sure. I don't feel like there's a good answer currently. The players in tech are embracing oblivion and ignoring the ramifications, as always. I think our tiny little gain is that art for arts sake is making a comeback in a big way. Of course we have to ignore massive problems to even see that... but it's there, and we can face it for some relief.

Are you in the render preview, using cycles?
what size is you canvas in pixel? is that supposed to be a 2.34 lense?
It wasn't too specific to 2.34, but I did use a more cinemascope resolution. What I usually do is make a new canvas that's 239 wide by 100 tall. Then I go to image>image size in the menu and resize to a larger resolution. I base that resize choice on how much detail I need. If I'm just sketching, then probably 1200 wide and 72px res. This keeps the file nimble while I sketch. Later on- at detail phase- I size up to something more like 4k res.
The fill can also be changed in the properties tab under window > properties
Yes, that's true. I didn't even think of it because I do often lay in flats then start editing the palette by just double tapping each layer. I've been exploring the properties dialogue a lot lately. Some powerful tools showing up there! Especially on raster layers.
Thank you for a tutorial that has given me the knowledge that exist within a great teacher. I may be late finding this, but I'm glad I did. Again, thank you for the lesson.
Very welcome! It's a simple thing, but so many tiny steps to make it actually work out.
