Concept Art Fundamentals - How to Paint Landscape Studies

  • In this video I break down my thinking on studies. Specifically, landscape studies in preparation for creating environment concept art. If you find yourself overwhelmed by landscapes, give this a listen! There's a good chance you're just tackling the wrong problems.
    The trick is: don't get lost in details; find simplicity!

    I rewatched this video very often to help me not lose track of what I want to do. I used to find myself getting lost in my art to the point where I didn't know what I wanted to work on next in a piece. Ever since watching this video, that has changed. tysm Human with Frog Voice

      Super happy to hear that.
      I've evolved the theory a lot since this video, actually. I've worked with about 400 students since when it was recorded and I've definitely found that this particular well goes deeper than my flashlight had hit prior.
      I'll be posting a kinda "part two" fairly soon. Thanks for sticking around and commenting 🙌

    Your video was really what I needed. Like you and many I started with human and figures studies, got better at it and enjoyed it more. But because I want to draw my own stories and worlds, I need to be able to draw landscapes. This "need to" approach and the fact that I'm not very good instinctively at observing things, made it hard for me. At the moment I'm almost even "blocked" because I try to draw photorealistically kinda right away. Not absolutely realistically, but still. And I try to simplify first, then draw, but what I didn't get was that I didn't need to copy it to "perfection". I saw your drawing and the photo and thought "oh, but it's not exactly how it is!" and just thought "of course it isn't, isn't this the point of studying?". It's just that I couldn't understand what to let go of, and was far too industrial in my approach "just paint a photo in a short amount of time". Yeah but with what skills? I didn't draw that many landscapes before, especially for an artist, to understand them enough. I was always baffled at how much artists would say, with such a short amount of time and more than anything, hating myself and my art for looking so "lame" and "juvenile". But I far too often forget to enjoy myself and learn the basics, instead of just suffering to "get good enough".

      Sorry I missed this comment! You sound a lot like how my inner voice sounded once upon a time. How are you doing now? Did you find a path forward from your soft block? I have a lot of other methods from the classes I teach. I'd be more than happy to connect and chat.

      @@SourPlanet Well I did finish a piece from then to now, but still blocked. Honestly not sure if I'm not just too lazy to upkeep my training and drawing. Sometimes I question my decision to be mostly an artist for work, because I just can't seem to be putting as much work as other peers. But no worries and your video did help me!
      Also I'm not sure how to come in contact, I only even started to comment on YT videos very recently haha, is there any way to send private messages at all?

    I was instantly drawn to your graphic approach to this kind of work. I never attended art school, nor learned to paint traditionally, but thankfully Photoshop allows me to explore an area where I was very frustrated.
    Even without your audio I picked up some very useful information. Thank you for sharing these!!

      Glad it helps! I still struggle with environments/landscapes in some situations.. but thinking graphically has certainly given me a path to some level of success. I don't ever make straight up awful landscapes anymore, even if some are better than others.
      I don't have much traditional painting experience either. I did some cast studies but never landscapes (except with graphite or ink). I REALLY want to do oil plein air.. but just never find the time. Some day!

      That's great to hear!
      I felt the same way- that nobody was explaining it well. So I tried to kind of boil down what I'd observed from my own studies and the work of others and reverse engineer the moments where artists were truly enjoying the process and creating work that represented them- but also captured something special about the scene before them. That particular moment is what I tried to explain here.
      Anyway, thanks for the comment. Kinda made my day 🙏

    Your insight is really helpful, I’m gonna do it this way! I’ve been so frustrated as there’s so little info and barely clear instructions for bg studies, like everytime I want to make a bg for my characters it always looks empty and lifeless, so ig that should be my focus for the studies

    • @SourPlanet

      That's a great thing to focus on. One of the most common issues with student and early portfolios is that backgrounds aren't figured out. I'm working on a video about specifically that topic too!

    Realizing I'm on a similar journey. I was an architecture student and still preferred characters over environments. That's how bad my mindset was so I never got to fully dive into it other than for class projects. Only recently did I actually start enjoying painting environments more. And using my architecture fundamentals has been super helpful too.
    If you're curious why architecture? I was forced into it after the infamous line "character artists make no money, choose a stable career"...

    • @SourPlanet
      @SourPlanet  2 года назад

      I know that feeling! I did Web design for a while in the early 2000s because as much as I wanted to paint in some capacity for a career... At every turn it was just what you say- "No one makes money with art." I didn't pursue it again until I was in my mid twenties.
      Glad you're exploring now! Having an architecture background is pretty fortunate too, as you know. It's the perfect foundation and all of those skills transfer right over. Are you posting your work somewhere?

      Haven't posted just yet. Still just doing studies in my freetime. I just discovered Blender, a free 3D program. So it's highly likely once I start posting soon, it'll be related to merging 3D & 2D scenes together.

      @@Muhammad-Jacobs699 Cool, cool.
      Love me some Blender. I used Maya a lot for a few years but once I settled into the games industry... I found that for 2D artists, any program is fine. Played with everything before finding Blender in 2017 and now it's changed my workflow entirely. I use Blender more than Photoshop these days! I have a huge tutorial coming out this summer covering how to use Blender and Photoshop for world design.

      @@Muhammad-Jacobs699 It's super fun! You basically get to create your own movie set or video game in Blender. Then you can run around inside it with a camera, using the WASD keyboard keys and your mouse. Export your view and paint over it back in Photoshop.

    1:54 what is going on there? He is using brush, not eraser, but is erasing - see 3:44, background color change.
    Anyone please explain?

    • @SourPlanet
      @SourPlanet  Месяц назад

      Hi! So at 1:54 I'm using a mask. I put a mask on the tree layer and then I selected the mask. I switched to a brush which is good for leaf shapes and I painted on the layer while the mask is selected. Since my foreground color is black, anywhere I added paint to the mask hides the layer content. Using this method I can take the simple original shape of the tree and "cut" leaf silhouettes out. At 3:44 I'm simply painting below all the other layers with a big fuzzy soft round brush. This changes the sky color while the layers above in the layers panel remain unaffected.
