    The term is "AMETORA" Its an abbreviation of the term "American traditional" I know the journalist that actually coined the term and wrote an entire book about it. The most extreme version of it is a magazine called "CLUTCH" which is like 1950s greaser, denim and military clothes etc. Its kind of a result of General McArthurs culltural brainwashing afte rthe war where now Japanese people have an American fantasy and obsession

    i appreciate your thoughtfulness to bring us non-men / non-cis ppl into the conversation ! i'm diving into your channel at a very interesting time in my transition & wanted to share some (long winded) thoughts i'm having in response to your videos so context : i'm amab with a long history of dressing masculinely / in menswear. currently on estrogen as a part of my particular nonbinary/transfeminine experience. realized through some clothing experimentation that i'm really not trying to change that much about how i've dressed. i'm still very into these kinds of fashion, & i still value functionality in my clothes. for example, comfort and practicality and durability to keep up with my life cuz i bike for one of my jobs and my main form of transportation and for fun. basically my go to saying for how i want to dress as i transition has been "i don't want my clothes to change all that much, i'm really trying to change how my body fits my clothes" so when you talk in specific detail about how you want your clothes to fit when putting looks together- which parts of the body you're trying to accentuate & which parts you are trying to obscure- i'm taking lots of notes. but kinda in reverse of what you're curating for youtself i have naturally broader shoulders and i don't necessarily want to emphasize that. i'm working on butt & hips growth (hormones + exercise) and trying to find ways to highlight that while still primarily enjoying denim and work pants. doing some research on how to tailor my clothes (even t shirts lol) to work toward the fit i'm imaging. and now i have boobs and getting used to how differently my tops drape on my torso is an interesting new challenge also giving a lot of thought to how my posture/mannerisms affect the way my clothes flow on my body this is already getting quite long but i'm sure you get the idea. lots to think about. and i'm very grateful for the knowledge you're sharing in these vids. especially your specific use of language to analyze/dissect/reverse engineer fits on different body types. so thanks !

    This was super fun and you did a great job. I had no idea this book was satirical in the 80s, cuz all the boys in their pastel polo and Polo shirts in Tulsa, OK followed it like the frickin Bible! Also I went to a "girls college" in the South, VERY Add-a-Bead, debutante, pink and green Preppy fantasy, where the students were wearing the exact same Brooks Brothers twinsets their mothers wore in the 50s. I have those same Bally loafers so thanks for really expanding on a world of ideas. As for the tie, there was the Dress for Success wave for women happening at the same time, so your tie is right en pointe. PS Congrats to your sponsor, bags worked perfectly!

    I was in college throughout the 1980's; my school was heavily attended by children of oil millionaires, so I was immersed in the preppy. 😜 What I remember are: polo shirts, oxford-cloth shirts with button-down collars, boat shoes (mostly Sperry top-siders, but also the dark-soled L.L. Bean which look very similar to the Timberland shoes currently trending). Solid white tennis sneakers (like Adidas Stan Smith or K-Swiss) were common too. (I remember seeing Tretorns, but they were not common in my area.) And of course Bass penny loafers. For clothing, the Land's End catalog was popular for more traditional looks, while the J. Crew catalog, with its brighter colors and more modern cuts (but still preppy) was considered a level up. For bags, shoulder bags were more popular than cross-body, and hand-held satchels were popular too. Coach and Dooney & Bourke were popular higher-end bag brands. Two huge trends: 1. Ralph Lauren polo shirts. The fabric was softer and they were considered more fashionable (i.e. more expensive) than Lacoste alligator-logo shirts. Girls would collect different colors and share them among friends so they rarely repeated a color. 2. Add-a-bead necklaces. Just plain necklaces with pearl-sized round gold beads, very basic but very expensive depending on the number of beads. There were lots of other trends, but those are the ones I can think of that were specifically part of preppy outfits during that time. (And of course, those of us who could not afford name brands would just wear generic versions of all of the above.) Preppy style is classic and timeless, although the cuts do change over time. In the early 80's, the clothes were fairly close-fitting. They became more oversized throughout that decade and into the 90's, when they gradually started to become more fitted again. I still love my white sneakers, I've got my eye on some Timberland boat shoes, and I love a good vintage leather Coach purse; but the whole preppy look is no longer for me. However, I do admire modern interpretations of the look.

    The Preppy Handbook came out when I was in junior high--I remember it well. Being a middle-schooler, I did aspire to emulate the preppy look as much as I could, though we were just a normal middle-class family. I knew it was a sort of cosplay, even then, but at the same time that aesthetic has never really left me. You had a fit w a little scarf around your neck. I went to a private school where a lot of kids aspired to look preppy. In high school, we girls had rectangular...scarves? that we tied into a big bow. I sewed mine myself. I don't know where the other girls got theirs? (Some girls just used ribbon.) The fabric was narrow enough to fit under your button-down collar and long enough to tie into a big bow, right in the center under the chin. Sometimes my outfit was a button-down shirt, crewneck sweater over it, and bow under the collar but over the sweater. Needless to say after I graduated I never wore a bow around my neck again. I liked your fits, but to look truly 1980s preppy, you've got to be WAY more colorful. Kelly green, cobalt blue, bright yellow, baby pink. Esp pink and green together! Those purses with the wooden handles and interchangeable button-on covers were huge. Anything monogrammed--your bag, your sweater, jewelry. Wearing a sweater tied around your neck was huge, though it never really made sense. Also wearing a polo shirt under an oxford shirt where you could see the collars of both...lol. Heard that was on the runway at men's fashion week not long ago.

    responding just to the comment about a recession : i would not trust the news or major economic outlets to genuinely say "we're in a recession," cause there's (at least) two vastly different economic ecosystems occuring simultaneously. the evidences i prefer to use to determine what kind of economic conditions we're in are : 1.the ever widening gap between wages and productivity and 2. the massive amounts of greedflation (inflated prices caused by major corporations artificially inflating prices for maximum shareholder profit) those two seem to explain that condition you're describing in this video of people returning to classic & nostalgic styles during times of great uncertainty and instability

    • @percish
      @percish 11 дней назад

      @@joyemitter right I think people are using recession as a shorthand to mean widening economic inequality and a cost of living crisis, but a recession means something very specific as a metric so the news aren’t going to call one until those prerequisites are met causing an ever weirder cognitive dissonance
