The Best Reddit Thread In The World - / city_boy_a_comprehensi...
that's crazy, lived in Tokyo for 7 years, haven't been back in a few years now, so basically they're dressing the same as 5 years ago, 10 years ago, 15 years ago, and 20 years ago....hasnt changed at all, i like how they don't hop on trends as much as they do in europe
It's better for the world
Yeah that's what I was thinking.. Because I've friends from Japan but they still dress like 2000 NU metal 5 years ago even before y2k is a thing
Born and raised in Queens, NY, been around Main St flushing growing up and noticed how the Asian folks have always been around this particular style which conveniently and eventually came around full circle, they been had it on, most people now are coming to appreciate it
人による。
bro that's so not true, a lot has changed. take Visvim for example, 20 years ago they were selling ordinary stuff like everyone else does, today they make some of the finest clothings with top quality and unique designs more superior than most non-designer western brands. 20 years ago Ape was super phenomenal but now no one would wear them because the same designs have been going on for 20 straight years. Sacai, N.hoolywood, Kolor, Junya Wanatabe, highly recommend you to take a look at their look books before coming to the same conclusion you made.
I do live in Tokyo😂
I'm from Zurich, Switzerland and when I moved to Tokyo 8 years ago I was astounded by their fashion style. It's completely different from where I came from !
time to donate everything i own and finally evolve into a city boy thank you pv
For the city boysssss
City boy style vid for the #pvv boys? 👀👊🏼
Drew doing his hw
Drew what it do
Omg Drew! Love your videos, you’re amazing😋
King
Take Ivy is such a vibe! It's very inspiring, even though it features such traditional styling.
Thank you for this, the algorithm really blessed me. I've loved this aesthetic for a while but had no idea what it was called. I saw somebody call it "Japanese casual" but couldn't find any good videos on it. Great video
I’m glad it found you!
@@percish where is. a good site to sell your new or used clothing?
@@giomusah2155 I used eBay and Grailed!
@@percish My issue with city boy style is the following: baggy fit, especially with pants, doesn't look good on short guys. I'm 5-9...Thoughts? Ive tried baggy pants and I look like an oversized grapefruit
@@giomusah2155 I would say you can do slightly oversized but a more tailored silhouette like a chino rather than the balloon style
Such a warm, wonderful video. Intelligent, passionate, a conversation it feels as though you were excited to share, delivered with such an effervescent fizz of storytelling.
I loved every second of it. Thank you so much :)
such kind words! Thank you
Yooo I feel like crying rn I've loved this style since forever but couldn't figure out what it's called and where to get them!! Thank you so much for this
So grateful for this breakdown. I’ve been loving this style for years and noticing where parts of it have shown up in American fashion stores but hasn’t quite been hitting the same. Appreciate your work here.
Bless the RUclips algorithm for bringing me this video! Thank you for your hard work 🫡
Thank you. Theory of Hakama pants as a symbol of oversized comfortable bottoms in Japan is actually worth discovering and documenting.
You did such a great job balancing the history of the style and giving brands recomendations all while mentioning different resources. Really enjoyed the video
This is what I’ve been trying to encapsulate and understand for years thank you for giving me names and pathfinding it for me!
Love this! I love the history and all the information. Thank you!
Amazing as always, incredible research and presentation love love love
Lovely video! Your due diligence definitely shines through and was wonderful to watch. I Recently came back from japan and regardless if people were in to fashion, i loved how intentional clothing felt on others, whether it was blue collar workers or more personality centric youth.
i recently thrifted a wide balloon pants and can't stop wearing it!! so digging the city boy style rn
Very informative! Definitely love this style and the brands that you highlighted
Yoko Sakamoto & Sillage have become my favorite brands over the last few months
NORSE PROJECTS, NIGEL CABOURN, UNIVERSAL WORKS, BEAMS PLUS, and VISVIM.
Saw this video on my recommendations, genuinely impressed with all the documentation and work you put. Thank you! I’ll travel to Japan this summer so I’ll write down some brands to check.
This has been so helpful, I felt very lost getting into these kinds of clothing. Would love a vid on the types of shoes/accessories you'd wear with these.
Love this video! really enjoyed the educational context that you provided
Most of our style is inspired from traditional dress like Jinbei, Samue, Happi and Hanten with modern twist. Japan also has more than 10 fashion style in Harajuku alone (Gyaru, Lolita, visual Kei, Decora, Mori girl and many more) without considering fashion from other prefecture. In Japan American adapted style is called Ametora (denims, bomber Jacket, tailored suits, formal shoes that's about it). The loose fit Men style (City boy) is inspired from Samue and Japanese Women likes wearing skirt (short and long) which was inspired from Hakama. Not all of our style is Ametora.
Love that! so greatful for this breakdown. Been living the cityboy life for a few years now, collecting Popeye and Fudge magazines!
Great summation of this topic. Quality ❤
Thanks for compiling this! Been looking to upgrade my style pallet
Love the breakdown! Fell in love with Japanese styles after recently traveling there. Noticed how much of an influence Americana had on fashion and trends.
I found this post very informative, thank you.
Stumbled on this video and enjoyed it so much. I didn’t know what this style was called but have been leaning towards for a little over a year now. You did a great job. I had to subscribe!!!
Margaret Howell and her diffusion line MHL are hugely popular in Japan and Korea as well. The materials, craftsmanship, and fit are amazing with older pieces even more so. It’s my “buy everything” brand
More content like this please! I'm new to fashion and this was very useful in terms of historical relevance and direction. Thank you!!!!
I love this video and thank you for adding city boy to my fashion dictionary
this is exactly what i was looking for omg thank you so much for this
Nice video. Love the podcasts you mentioned.
this was wild informative appreciate u homie
Finding you has been a godsend. Not nearly as fashion-savvy as you are but the way you break down putting together your outfits, sourcing the pieces, etc. whilst having a similar style to what I aspire to, I think, is really gonna help me! Fingers crossed for a city boy summer, thank you
fingers crossed !! thank you
So interesting! Loved learning about city boy fashion ❤
love all the initial brands you recommended! cannot afford them yet, but i’m happy to browse
I love this fashion dissection things you did ❤
Loved this breakdown so much
Your style is amazing!
Well done video! I've been exploring the city boy style and I personally love it. I like to do a mix of streetwear and a simpler dark academia. You've got my sub.
great content as usual! thank you !!
Brilliantly informative…also… love your Kuma mug
🌎☮️

Great video, loved the info! Second hand for the win 🫶
Awesome video once again! Very insightful and full of resources, getting into the city boy spirit in no time thnks to you :)

Sooo informative! Thank u
Your style is AMAZING! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Hi Percia, I'm watching you for the first time and I'm so happy I've found you haha
Many thanks for all the thorough yet concise information you've presented to us. This was a huge discovery ❤
Im falling in love with fashion all over again 😊
Lol I randomely found this video on my home feed and love it ! Congrats
I think sakai, united tokyo and mastermind are also worth mentioning. Thank you for your video!
I'd also like to add graphpaper, clesste, and mfpen
I love Tokyo's fashion.thank you
finally i found the right word to call my dream style
this is so good. Thanks!!
Pilgrim Surf Supply is a great Japanese brand available to purchase in the US. It's very California Surf culture inspired, but a bit City Boy too. They make women's clothes so it could be a good starting point for women interested in streetwear. Like many Japanese brands the sizing if VERY limited.
Also their Japanese website has a great lookbook that's updated every season.
Articles of Interest is a fantastic podcast. I’ve listened to the American Ivy season multiple times, so good!!
The Season one episode “Blue jeans” is also a favorite.
just returned from japan and yes, the city boy style definitely grew on me. i'm usually in slimmer, streamlined clothing (think asket overshirt, plain white tee, nudie lean deans, pf flyers or dunks) but i found myself buying items with looser fits while i was there. definitely very comfortable and didn't feel like i was drowning in my clothes or that i was a teenager wearing my dad's clothes. it's looser clothes with structure, if that makes any sense. definitely added some of those books on my amazon wish list :)
Loved this video, thanks!
Thank you for this! Amazing research and presentation. Randomly came across Popeye magazine for sale at a coffee shop near me (Portland, OR) - guess I need to go back and pick up a copy now.
Thank you for the awesome content. Engineer Garments is another brand on my list ❤
2:40 one of the funny things about the recursivity you touched on here is that "the way american college students were dressing" as defined by Take Ivy was also kind of a lie. Part of Take Ivy's genius was that a lot of the fits were fabricated! Therby creating an influence. Love it so much.
thx for this video. i just discovered your yt channel. i already love your content on tt and insta.
When I lived in NYC, there was a company called "Gentry" in williamsburg. Went out of business, very expensive, but they still have there instagram.. very similar styles to what you were talking about. felt casual (but obviously not) but looked amazing.
Loving ur stylee, keep it up
epic and informative vid. wide casual lifestyle
Great video! A few others that I’ve liked: Kestin, Olive Menswear, Engineered Garments, Lady White Co
Great video! Also Margaret Howell for the luxury / high end expression of this aesthetic. It’s a UK brand but extremely popular in Japan.
they finally found anglan, love the work that handongs does over there.
Love you too for making this
you're good at this
Awesome video!
THANK YOU!
great video!!!
@thecasualco (Reggie Casual) is probably the best guy to teach Westerners the nuances and styles within Japanese fashion. Arguably the biggest reason i got into Yohji and more during my time living there and watching his vids.
Excellent video!!! I feel like it was tailor made for me.
Great, so much info to get though. Great first view. Now sub from this viewing alone
yeeeeeeees thank you for this !!! subscribed !
Welcome!!
Great video!
I WAS JUST WISHING YOU WOULD EXPAND ON THIS TOPIC IN A LONGER FORMAT!!!
very very much interesting video!!
I have never been to Tokyo Japan. My father visited it in the 1950s , and he liked it. He said the Japanese are very hospitable. I think the young Japanese are very trendy and individualistic . Ive seen images of young ones .
"Ametora: How Japan Saved American Style" by W. David Marx is a fascinating book. I loved it. His second book not so much.
My pinterest is filled with literally these same exact photos. Lol It's good to see a video specifically on this style.
removed like 2 months of looking for clothing bands. legit thank you.
In the excellent book named AMETORA from W. David Marx , you can learn more about the history behind the iconic book Take Ivy. Quite an aventure for the period.
I spoke about Ametora in this video !
Tokyo has been at the top for over 3 decades at this point.
Quality, attention to detail and layering is everything.
I used to buy Men’s No No, Relax and Boon magazines in the mid 2000s. Used to cost me around £90 pm to import.
Universal Works is my buy anything/everything brand, definitely City Boy adjacent
I love it
2:35-ish As someone who's been kind of around the evolution of both, I liked this summary a lot!
I could say more but
my favourite thing about this style is watching how each one interacts with the other. Very neat. Lots of perspective and culture (and by extension harmony/aesthetic/body type/etc) in play :D
Thx, I like all about this video
Love how you incorporated history of the fashion style! Fun video to watch! Also since you mentioned that you've been inspired by the Popeyes magazines, was wondering if there were other forms of media that have inspired your outfits and personal style?
I have absolutely no idea why the algorithm decided I should see this video... But I watched the whole thing. Nice work!
