- So we traveled to East Asia to film a six-part series about beauty, style, and shopping - and we’re coming in hot with episode 2 about Japanese Street Fashion Subcultures! Japan has some very iconic and unique Harajuku-centric fashion subcultures, and Lolita style has always fascinated me - so we decided to do a deep dive into the poofy, frilly, pastel style! What do you think of my final look?

this for me was legit posted 25 seconds ago
i love the fact that safiya doesn’t just try outfits/trends but she always talks about the background of the trends and really immerses herself in the culture
I like that too, like the time she told the history of chockers. Even if she does a few mistakes (I guess she does since she isn't an expert) it is really nice that she does some research on the subjects of her trends/outfits :3
Me too! I love the idea of diving in headfirst!
Well even her speech is so clear and comfortable to listen. It really shows that she was in Stanford and not a hs dropout.
I completely agree!!
Yes the background information really gets you into the culture. Understanding is key.
Every time Saf explores another subculture or topic she's very respectful and just genuinely curious and willing to participate, I really love that.

My son is trying to hint to me that he wants to try incorporating Lolita style without fully committing to saying it. I'm excited to be on this journey with him 💕 So happy places like this exist and with many kind, open-minded people.
Well, yeah, because mens lolita exists too?? Come on, of course it exists
safiya is one of the handful of you tubers that really understands how to respect a culture without overstepping while still giving us quality content, bat kween
Very true
I was literally just saying this to my partner as I was watching. She's always consulting actual experts and acknowledging the limits of her understanding and trying to expand them.
It's like wearing a kimono because its pretty and wearing it all wrong, not knowing what it means, and wonder why people are looking at you weird. Also you could tell rin rin was uncomfortable when she compared her clothes to Tyler's gym shorts, that was rude.

The fact that RinRin dressed up in black just to match your outfit is really cute

This is the first time being introduced to her and I find her so adorable and loveable
And she dressed up simpler than Safiya so she could shine this day. Shyt, she's so cute and respectful.
"For the little boys and girls inside of us that wish to be princesses" That is a great quote and need to be on a t-shirt
As someone who grew up obsessed with lolita fashion I was just smiling the whole time. Never worn it and never will but I know the feeling of joy at wearing what you truly want and not caring what others think. That's why I love harajuku.
I'm more of a pop kei style or aristocrat style menswear, personally.
Why never will?

I dressed in lolita from 2010 to 2012 and had a blast in a glass. I remember plodding around downtown LA in rocking horse shoes running to and from the trains on my way to lolita meetups. I even recognize a couple of the girls in the fairytale boutique shots! It's such a gorgeous style!
Love the end style. She is so pretty. It really makes me want to try out the Lolita fashion. I just love how she looks in that outfit. I’m so glad she picked that one. She looks fabulous. The makeup and hair really adds to it too.

I really love this style! as an alt girl, i quite like the gothic lolita outfit. i am extremely insecure of wearing corsets. when the boarders open, i will definitely go to the shops you went to.
Lolita by default is alt lol
I used to be insecure with corsets and I still won't wear one in public, but I got used to wearing stuff like them in public, namely waist cinchers and waspie belts over my outfits. Could try that.

Same, I can only really wear lolita dresses bc I find every other kind of dress uncomfortable. Id waste all my money on lolita because its too pretty to resist buying.
They are all soo pretty i want
I really hope she didn't just restrict her purchases to the final outfit - because even if they weren't the "final choice", a lot of those clothes looked AMAZING, and frankly if she didn't buy a million wrist cuffs after fawning over them so, she's nuts.

As a Lolita I’m so happy people are making these videos looking the style we love so much! And it was so nice seeing someone I watch frequently trying it out!
I've got to be honest, When the eyepatch was added to the blue and black dress it reminded me of Ciel Phantomhive from black butler, Like the whole outfit screamed Ciel Phantomhive once that was added
Safiya in the changing room doorway gave me Alice and wonderland vibes. When she became a giant.
I thought it reminded me of something, thanks for commenting this!
exactly what i thought!!!
It reminded me of the big bird vine where it just kicked in the door
Rachelle Cham I commented this too! I instantly thought "oh no, she got bamboozled by the eat me and drink me labels!"
It's amazing how in depth Safiya goes into the history, reasoning, and options available for these looks. Her explanations are easily my favorite part of her videos.

Gafias • 1million subs that’s my dream, become part of my journey and watch my content
Oubi i know righttttt i thought she gonna be in pink or any bright color, but she def look gorgeus in any color 😔
I just recently saw a very pretty lady in a beautiful cotton candy pink wig (or it was just her hair, and in that case, wow her hair is amazing) and poofy dress with some cute shoes at a local arcade and I was actually speechless because I never see that kind of thing where I live, but it’s cool to see people express themselves!
I would personally LOVE to try Lolita Fashion. I'm a bit more into the goth style than anything else but I would also love to try to other Lolita styles as well! And a lot of the people in the community seem really nice so I could also get along with them. But seeing as I am young and have parents that don't want me to cross the line with gothic fashion, I don't think I would be able to do it. Probably when I'm older I’ll be able too, but that might change overtime. And unfortunately our family is not that rich or anything like that so it would be hard to get stuff like that. But as the years go on, I will imagine myself in Lolita fashion or make it in Royale high! Lol
In the meantime, babydoll dresses are very in fashion! You can totally get away with a casual Lolita look if you're creative with mainstream clothes and maybe a very, very light crinoline for a tiny bit of skirt volume. 😁

I watched this video when it first came out four years ago, and it was my first encounter with lolita. It immediately stuck with me as a look I always wanted to try. I spent two years researching the style near obsessively before trying to use pieces I already owned to make lolita coords as there are no lolita stores in my country and online shopping is not something I trust myself to do. I kept trying for the past couple of years and stayed lurking in the community, never loosing passion for the style despite trying very different styles along the way. Two days ago I got my first ever brand piece and I owe it all to this video. Thank you.
I honestly love how RinRin speaks so clear with very soft tone.

The girl from the second shop looked so excited, like “YES A GIGANTIC DOLL FINALLY”
TBH that was also my reaction
One question, WHY THE HECK DOES SHE LOOK GOOD IN EVERY STYLE/OUTFIT! She seriously looks so good in everything
I REALLY appreciate seeing a video about Lolita fashion from someone outside of the community that doesn't boil down to "haha what weirdos dressing in weird frilly clothes and trying to attract pedophiles" because I feel like that's what I see 80% of the time lol. Also you looked AMAZING in the outfit you chose, that corset (while I'm sure not the most comfortable piece of clothing) is gorgeous.
I just love how in every single one of Safiya's videos she genuinely educates herself while having fun when shes doing something experimental
