Oooo new shadow box idea! Take one label from the project (or one of each if different was used) and write the pattern name on there and what was used and dates completed etc and put it in there with some cute fun number label stickers for each year creating time capsules of your journey

For the shadow box- I'd create one for each year and label it with cute number stickers for the year

The Messi Dressy should count too for spring!

I think your dream knit will be beautiful as a dress! I hope you go for your original plan. I agree with other comments here that a boxier knit for your Dad's sweater will probably be a better fit for an older gentleman. I really enjoy seeing what you are knitting and the thoughts that go into your decisions for projects.

I don't really care what I make, and the reason I relate to you is that you assess your knits as they relate to your process and your whims and your wardrobe desires. Getting rid of sleeve island first is a great idea. There’s a book you can pick up so cheaply online called knitting and tea that has a great cable in it. I looked at the book on ravelry which was helpful. I was thinking can you take your cue from the sweater you have already made for your dad or ask him what he would prefer.

I think that the idea of saving your yarn labels is so special! You could get a scrapbooking hole punch in a cute shape like a heart or star and punch a shape out of each label. Then you could put the little shape into the shadow box as an homage to all of your projects in a similar vein to what you have now! (But hopefully more sustainable over time without the bulk issue)

17:45 I don’t save my yarn labels but I do save all the tails I snip off after weaving in the ends. At the end of the year I stuff all the saved yarn tails into one of those clear ornament balls and use stickers to add the year! It’s a fun way to remember the projects I did each year while decorating my tree 😊

I watch Jen Geigley’s RUclips knitting videos. She saves her yarn labels each year and uses them to make an “annual” paper chain. Also, you can stuff clear plastic Christmas tree bulbs with your colorful yarn scraps and hang them on your tree or wherever. 😊

In terms of your yarn labels, what about just saving one label per yarn used per project? That way you have a running inventory of what wool you've used in the past without collecting all the labels used. Just a thought.

I have a knitting journal and I put a scrap of yarn and the yarn band on the page for each project.

Hi Nora, compare the schematics of your dads cable sweater to the finished one you previously made him that fits him around the waist . Then you will see if the cable sweater measurements are tapered too much.

Definitely make it the full dress! If you just make it a sweater, you will have a bunch of yarn left over that will become yet another sweater in that same color which was already a concern for you 😊

I’m not normally a monogamous knitter and I definitely have a decent amount of lingering wips in the “naughty corner” but I have been solely knitting on my new tessellated vest for about a week and its slow going but im loving it!!

I keep one label from each type of yarn I use for a project. I try to maintain a project journal, and I put the label for the yarn on the page with the corresponding project!

Hello, I'm knitting Jesse byCocoKnits. It's my second sweater from CocoKnits. I mention this because I dont recall you knitting a top down contiguous sweater with "set in" sleeves. Thought you might be interested in looking into this method and give yourself a new challenge, however, it's not hard and probably wont be much of a challenge for you.

Hi Nora, agree with previous commenters - no need to show more of your try on tubing method - editing is one of your strongest talents and the effort is obvious and truly appreciated. I laughed at your yarn labels - I did exactly the same thing in a box for the whole of 2024 thinking that I could do something cool and arty but ended up looking at the massive pile of paper and thinking what did I do that for? Saw the comment on the paper chain, like the idea of that but not sure it would look any good on display. So I’ll be watching to see if you end up doing something interesting with yours, mine left me stumped. Finally, I think you talked yourself into the dress decision during the episode - I can’t see it any other way than how you describe how you’re going to wear it and how it will make you feel. Personally I don't keep my yarn labels, but if you want to do it, why not keep one label per yarn used in a project ? It should grow more slowly then ;) Also, I am not sure for natural fibres, but I have to regularly shave my acrylic handmade and store bought sweaters. I heard that you only have to shave a sweater made with natural fibres once or twice and then it stays mostly lint free.

As far as the yarn labels go…I keep a hard copy of the pattern in a binder, as well as maintain a separate project book. I save a yarn label for each, along with a small piece of the yarn attached. I don’t know why I do both, but I do!!

Definitely no tapering on the sweater, it will look weird. Don’t feel bad about throwing labels in your project bag, I have a bunch in mine too plus random stray yarn ends lol.

These sweater construction techniques are not gendered. There are plenty of patterns designed for men, women and unisex in both set-in sleeve and drop shoulder… it has nothing to do with “biceps”.

Dress Nora, but can you finish your Dad's sweater do you reckon? Let's look at it realistically, it's a birthday present soooo, if you have another outfit for yourself to wear then I d do Dad's sweater because you know how much joy he'll have for it to be finished. Speed knit girl...

I generally only keep my yarn labels for a year so at the end of the year I can reflect visually on how much I knit. I track balls of yarn and yardage and weight as well but its fun to see that representation of how many balls of yarn I knit through in the past year. Then I start over.

I would keep going on the long cable dress. I would wear it all the time with sneakers with my hair in a ponytail or messy bun. I have been thinking of making one since I heard about your vision.

Listening to you talk about the man’s sweater makes me think I should be knitting men’s patterns 😂. I have broad shoulders and narrow hips and I hate dropped shoulders and massive amounts of ease in sweaters. I also have a large bust though 🤔 Hmmmm.

That made me laugh - keeping ALL the labels! I keep one from each for my project journal - a little book with all my notes. I haven’t taken to recording my knits on Ravelry. I do keep all my small yarn balls in large Kilner jars and they really look super and make me smile. Please keep going and knit a dress…❤

I keep a single Yarn-Label per project. I make notes about the project on it and attach a piece of yarn (I punch a hole) to it. Keeping all would take up to much space and get really messy 😂

Have you considered knitting a matching sweater and skirt instead of the maxi dress? That way you could have your sweater done and work on the skirt later. You could wear them together for a sleek monochromatic look much like the dress.

Knit the sweater and then a straight skirt out of the same yarn, instead of the dress; then you get multiple outfits.
