Years ago I was in a gorgeous store, trying on a pair of triple-digit loose linen pants. Wanted them, but $$$. Really really wanted them. I was staring at them in the communal mirror when a beautifully-dressed older woman stopped to stand next to me. We considered them together for a sec, and then she said "You don't want the linen pants. You want the beach house." And something clicked inside me. I'll never forget her -- wise, magnificent, role model.
I totally get this.i once purchased a very expensive two-tone beige jacket that was a tad too tight, but the image of myself standing at the rim of the Grand Canyon, a breeze blowing through my hair glittering in the sunlight, wearing THAT JACKET, was overwhelming. It was that Life I wanted, not that coat. That being so, I think It's OK to have the fantasy via clothing, why not?! 😊
@@KarenStrickholm That's the magic -- right there. Those of us who can access those moments are the lucky ones, I think. I love that moment of overwhelm. And I love that you went for the jacket. It might just be the dream, the glittering, that's the important thing --
Great episode! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: What I appreciate most about your podcasts is that you analyze all the little details. You really tear ideas apart to look at all sides of everything. Cool! There’s a lot more that I appreciate, but that’s the reason I’ll keep coming back.
Omg you’re so funny…. The whole spiel about wanting to wear that sweater at night on the beach but “I’ve never been to the beach” You are ALL of us!! ❤❤❤
I love your cozy cable sweater! My 2 cents: I agree with your thoughts to try the neck and shorten the length. I think the sweater would also benefit from more structure on the shoulders by running a crochet chain along the shoulder seam to limit the stretch. And lastly, I think you should throw it in the dryer for a bit before blocking. That type of yarn works best being 99% dry before blocking. All-in-all, good job!!!
Nora, I am laughing out loud at your analysis of your lifestyle vs. the beach walk lifestyle! So cute! The sweater is lovely on you but I understand the issues you point out.
Hi Nora! I've knitted two tees this summer with Sandnes garn Line, take into consideration that it doesn't stretch with blocking and even using it it doesn't grow much, so I suggest you to knit to the true misure you need. ❤ Happy knitting
My spouse and I watch your videos every Saturday (it's our favorite part of our morning routine!) and we love that you say "buh-ons" instead of "buttons". We think it's charming
Dear, sweet Nora I love your enthusiasm even when things don’t go quite to plan (and that happens to us ALL!) and you still have a smile on your face! 🥰
I keep hearing " what a feeling" from flashdance when I see you in that cozy sweater. I think it looks amazing. Wear it for podcasts...you look beautiful. The flashdance reference is a compliment. Great off the shoulder , mid 80's look. Your vests/ tanks are lovely and look so practical yet elegant. Who in the world is criticizing your pronunciation?? Buttons, buttons, who's got the buttons? Im irrationally defensive of picky words toward you. Is that weird? I just think you are fab. Thanks for sharing your joy.
Omg I love that reference!!! 😂😂😂 I never even knew there was a wrong way to say “buttons” until I said it in the internet hahahaha. Thank you so so much!! 🥰
Your video was so enjoyable to watch and taught me quite a bit, too. All the work you showed came out beautifully. I came across your channel this evening for the first time accidentally. I'm glad that I did.
I absolutely love the luxurious lounge flashdanceish cozy sweater on you!! Yes it is totally impractical but really, who cares?!?!? When you cinched it up at the V it game me an idea. How about knitting two icord ties at the neck (kinda like a sweatshirt) that can dangle for the sexy look but you can tie it up for practical purposes. Love everything you do, try and you are such a brave, adventurous knitter!!
Love the cozy sweater and elegant vest. It would not ‘answer’ the weight you want for your buttons but I could see darker fresh water pearls as being an elegant addition. 🧶Cher
Thank you Nora, I now have all my winter knitting patterns. I went on a spree at the Kutovakika store on Revelry and am now excited to go to find me some drops (that seems to be a favorite yarn of hers). WOOT!
The vest looks so cute!! I kinda feel like knitting one myself❤ My suggestion for the extra yarn left would be for your to knit a bow to wear on your hair (I believe Petite knits has a pattern for it). It would look really cute with the vest!! ❤
Can I just say that I really appreciate how you synchronize your before and after blocking try-on videos. It’s so helpful to see front/back/side view side by side. Thank you so much for doing that. ❤
If you end up frogging some of the bottom of your sweater, you could use that yarn to make a cowl so that your neck is warm when you wear the sweater for coziness!

Oh this was such a fun video. As a fairly new knitter, I’m really enjoying your projects and sharing the entire experience. It’s fun and really helpful!
Hi Nora I dont think that you have to be beholden to the way others have styled the Vest Claire! It would look really cute over a dress, button up top, or turtleneck. Its such a beautiful garment and can be layered to bring a touch of texture and shape to so many different outifts!
Funny story...my Mom changed our puppy's name from 'Buttons' to 'Teddy' ...because...of the way I said But-tons.😂 Nice work all around Nora. Really love the combo of the Tolsta Tank.👍
Your description of the impracticality of the oversized vneck was perfect! I try to keep reminding myself of this when I want to knit single strand mohair or really holey sweaters. Like I do not live in a climate that warrants either of those things 😂😂
I'm subtly transitioning into autumn knits, I pulled out a blouse that I put on hold in spring. But I am also hoping to squeeze in the Lunan tee by Creabea in these last weeks of August. Love the chunky oversized sweater goodness on you!

Loved your review of the Feel Good COZY sweater. 🤣😆🤣😆 I just recently finished a test knit for the Feather Cardigan for Knit Purl Girl and I couldn't find buttons that were light enough and the right size, sooooo I crocheted my own buttons. I'm SUPER pleased with the outcome! If your clay buttons don't pan out, you're a crocheter. Perhaps consider trying crochet buttons!
Yay! The sweater is amazing! I love how slouchy and oversized it is! Maybe one cable longer than you’d like, but I also love how it is right now. It is lux loungewear! It’s for *fashion* not practicality, it’s beautiful! 😍
Thanks for the discount code for kutovakika ❤ I just bought two of her patterns, one of them being the stripe hype obviously 😜 love watching your podcast!
You always look so gorgeous in the colours and designs that you choose. I’m inspired by your attention to detail and patience in taking the time to get the little finishing touches done!
Thank you so much 🥰 my philosophy is that those little finishes and details only take 10% of the time, so we may as well do them right to make the 90% worth it!
I too have two summer projects to finish. Both are t's. One is actually a class at my local knit shop. I expect I have at least 3 more weeks to finish these projects. I am however looking at winter sweater ideas. Mistakes were made and I cleaned out my closet a little *too* well and ended up with 5 shirts for work and 2 pair of work pants. I am slowly and deliberately adding more work clothes.
Check out how to do bust darts. They will add length to the front for us girls with a fuller bust. PS bust darts are short rows. Lily Kate has them on her calm night cami. I added those and I am happy I did.
I totally agree and relate to picking projects for the life you live. I deff tend to romanticize and imagine projects in scenarios, but realistically I work from home and never leave my house.
I hope the modifications on that sweater work out for you! I’ve gotten to the point where I’m really a function over fashion person so those sleeves would drive me bonkers lol but the cables are lovely! I have firmly moved into fall knitting now, I’ve got three sweaters I’m working on, two are gifts and the Framed sweater I just couldn’t resist!
Lovely as usual. I'm in Christmas knitting mode and still on my vest knitting as well. Oh Kly-mat-is ... Clematis is a lovely vining flower... I love that sweater ... I think you be surprised how much you'll wear it
Once again Nora you’ve smashed it with your creativity & enthusiasm! You really are my favourite & I subscribe to ALOT of channels about knitting 😂 Now with regards to naming your mannequin. I have one that lives in my garage & comes out occasionally to try on my knits & we have called her Blanche. It always makes us laugh when I say to my hubby “ Oh could you grab Blanche & bring her upstairs to model for me please” 😂 With regards to superwash yarn, I avoid it like the plague after spending weeks once knitting a complicated lace patterned sweater only for it grow to gigantic proportions upon blocking 😮. Never again will I touch the stuff 😂 Last but not least, in answer to your question on current WIPS. I’m knitting the Holly sweater by Pernille Larsen 🎄🎅. My go to for button shopping is Loop of London. Their buttons are incredible!! Much love from 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧x
Buttons: Amazon sells resin button kits. Joann’s sells covered button kits (use fabric to cover them). Both are ideas I’ve used when I couldn’t find the perfect button kits
You made me chuckle thinking about the life I want to live vs the life I do life! “Impractical” could also be called “whimsical,” and I love whimsy in my life! 😂😂😂. Maybe name the hanger Bliss!
I am still knitting summer projects. I live in coastal NC and we have extended summers. I get less wear from winter knits. I love mohair but rarely use it unless it is in something open and light like Ranunculus or Love note. I never wear anything bulky, or Aran and get very little wear from worsted projects. I not nit necessarily enjoy knitting with plant fibers but my projects knit with them gets more use.
I'm totally moving into Fall knitting!! I successfully made my first sock! Now I want like 20 more pairs even though I've only made 1 sock, lol! BUT...I was planning on making a cotton shirt/sweater to transition from summer to fall so I will probably still knit that since I already have the yarn.
On you new vest gauge issue. Have you tried going up a needle size to see if you meet gauge that way? Or change to wooden needles might help you get your gauge. I haven't worked with linen yet but agree plant fibers grow so maybe the 2 stitches won't be a big differences.
I had that problem, my garments sometimes get stretched after the blocking. I found that put them in the dryer helps a lot. I have recovered some of my jumpers this way. 😅
I love your wool wash! Your way of shopping speaks to my heart. I love your cozy beach sweater, and I laughed when you said about the sleeves being so big and long and doing dishes because I was thinking the exact thing. Thumbs up Osi is adorable. Your visions on a Saturday are always such a joy. Happy knitting 💚🧶💚
Totally laughed at your comment about an extra tub of air dried clay lying around. This sounds like my house. 😅 also, I say buttons the way you do so you aren’t alone with that pronunciation. 🙂
Totally still in summer knitting mindset. It can be sweltering all the way through October here in Northern California, so I have a ways to go. I also appreciate how you will rip out and remake a project to fit your vision. Many of my knitting friends have mocked my inclination to do this, but I think I’ve spent so much on the yarn and invested so much time, I want to LOVE to WEAR it, not just think it looks pretty folded on a shelf. I am happy to see many knitwear designers talk openly about how many times they rip their designs back to get the fit just “so.” It makes hand knits feel that much more special
I completely understand the button issue - when you spend tens of hour working on a knit or sewn piece of clothing, you don't want to use mediocre buttons. Since I am a ceramicist, I just started making my own. I even do custom glazes for them to match my fabric, because why not 🙃✨️
I'm glad you're still on summer knitting, I feel like everyone but me is so excited for Fall already. Fall is great, but I love summer knitting and I have like 3 WIPs still on the go! #snailstitches 😂 (Though I did buy the Salty Days sweater with your code and that's got me excited a bit!)
Your "Feelgoodcablesweater" love the relaxed cables on it but being so oversized remined me of more of a poncho vibes and yes i agree when your to grab that it's because your a bit chilly and having your shoulder or chest exposed makes you want to pin it shut lol I look forward to seeing how your clay buttons come out and or if you venture into oven baked buttons and how they will be different ... inquiring minds want to know! LOL And as for the name of your hanger / model How about Mona the model or Try it on Tonya LOL
Hi Nora, before I saw the part where you were making your own buttons I was thinking the paper vest was giving me Steam Punk vibes and was imagining metal buttons to make it steam punky. Happy Saturday!!
I definitely had to learn the practical part of wardrobe creation. I love to knit wooly knits, like love them! But, I live in Florida. I had to make peace with cotton and linen; fingering weight, and year round summer knitting. The draw to a huge worsted weight colorwork cardigan still exists! So hard to resist! 😂
to be honest I have been in fall knitting mode since May haha... I have so many fall colored yarns and garments I want to make sure I can wear in the autumn so I have been a season ahead this year!
I've found that if I gently dry super wash in the dryer, it pulls ot back into shape where it stretched in washing. It might suck that sweater into a better shape? 🤔 oh! You love it! I added that comment before I finished listening to you. I'm horrible that way. 😂
Really thoughtful, constructive feedback on your FOs. That Vest Claire is so cute! Maybe a market bag of some kind or a hat like Himari if you have enough of the Asaginu left. That wine-stain color is PERFECTION on you - looking forward to seeing that Tolsta blocked and finished. 💜 I never moved into Summer knitting haha. I did the Aosta Sweater 2.0 test knit for The Knit Purl Girl last month, and am working on a Step by Step Cardigan in Noro Madara right now. Maybe I'll get there next Summer!
I’m so glad it all came out coherently! I had a lot to say 😅 I love the idea of a little bag with the leftover yarn-hopefully there’s enough!! Thank you 🥰 I definitely don’t know that every summer will be a summer knitting season for me, but it was fun! I think you’ll be happy when the cooler weather rolls in and you can enjoy all your fresh FOs!!
Hi Nora, There’s no wrong way to say buttons. 😊. I’m a linguist. I’ve noticed over the past ten years it is becoming much more common to hear what’s called a “glottal stop” in place of an “aspirated T” sound in many words like this. So know that you are part of the leading edge of language change!! It’s subtly easier for the body to say it that way, so it makes sense and that is how language naturally changes over time. Changes are happening much faster now in the Internet age because of the worldwide sharing and speed of communication. 🎉
I’m not a linguist, so I don’t know how to describe how I’m hearing Nora pronounce “buttons,” but I think it’s different from the way most Americans pronounce it. To me, it sounds like the “T” sound in Nora’s “buttons” and “cotton” gets produced way back and low in her throat, after which she doesn’t fully bring things back to finish off the word with an “n” sound. Do you hear that too? It seems to me that most of us, no matter what we do with the “T” sound, do end the word “button” in a distinct “n” sound with air pushing through the nose. It doesn’t bother me in the least to hear Nora’s pronunciation, but I do notice it and I’ve tried to replicate it, and I find it uncomfortable to say it that way. Maybe I’m just weird. Please please please understand that I’m not criticizing anyone, especially Nora, who’s got one of the absolute best podcasts on RUclips.
@@lizholzer4930 to my ear, after the “glottal stop,” the n still sounds the same as it would if the “tt” were fully enunciated. But isn’t it all interesting? I love everything about language-as long as we’re communicating, it’s all good!! 😊
@@lizholzer4930i say button the same way and never noticed the air coming out of my nose on the “n” sound, how strange to be suddenly aware of the sensation
😂 I don't know why this made me laugh so hard--I love to try and replicate the way other people say things too and haven't heard of many other people doing the same. As a singer, I found this technical description to be so satisfying and fascinating! I also thought I'd throw it out there that, until discovering RUclips, I had never heard someone pronounce the "tt" in "button" or "cotton." I wonder if it's a regional thing 🤷♀️ anyways, thanks for the compliment! 💛
It totally makes sense that the superwash gives you acrylic vibes because some superwash has a light coating of plastic. You might want to look for “eco” superwash, which ramps down the tooth of the wool cuticle but doesn’t have the coating. I stick to non superwash except for baby gifts because I much prefer the springy feel of regular wool-love that bounce!
I’m still doing summer knitting.. 2 wipes going Sabai top 2 in black and Misurina in coral w complementary multicolor yarn. You are so adventurous and talented♥️
I had such a disappointing experience with superwash once on a gift knit, I’ve never used it again. You’re brave, as always!! Too bad it didn’t stay at that pre-blocking size; your ideas for modifications are so smart. Seems like Medium would overall work great for you. I learn so much following your every project. 🎉❤
Hi Nora. I think you’ll get more use out of the sweater as an outer layering piece. When you are taking off the I-cord around the neck you could just take a few stitches and sew up the neck a bit before applying a new I-cord. That may be just enough to close up the V a bit
I think buttons for your vest will be better than the ties. Ok...the air dry wont work permanently. I would find the polymer clay (shape and bake ...then glaze)at Joanns. They also have a sealer/glaze. I do love home made buttons. I have made them a few times as gifts. I made my mom a hat that had buttons and I had each of the grandkids do a thumb print on each. You have to be aware of the thickness. They can become heavy if they are too thick. Cant wait to see what you come up with!
😂 Just finishing the episode...hahaha! The wool wash bottle is fantasic! Seriously, you will eventually use it all. Hahahha😂😂😂 P.S. your sweater is definitly cozy looking! Thanks for fun episode!
Hey Nora, I love the cable sweater, it looks super comfy🥰 If you’re unhappy with the fit, have you considered steeking (there are loads of useful videos on RUclips on how to do this) and turning it into a longer cardigan? I’ve done this on a couple of sweater projects where I wasn’t happy with the fit. I would love to hear more your opinions on steeking as a technique, it can be quite scary for beginners!
What about paper buttons? Might be cute. Also, I'm getting dress vibes from the big chunky sweater, I can see leaving off the sleeves and adding length to it!
I have to look in to paper buttons but that could be just the right thing!! I totally think it could work as a dress!!!! It may be a little too similar to an upcoming project I have planned-but it could work!!
I travelled to Flock so I am watching only now (I am never this late lol). I had the exact same thoughts for pretty much everything you said!! Figured out that warm wool sweater and deep/open v-necks don't work for me. Still working on learning to distinguish between the fantasy life and the real life I am living and to knit mostly appropriate garments... I just finished my Claire vest a couple days ago. Absolutely love it and how the pattern is written. But I agree, the back is a bit too low. I had the same short row thought and I do want to try it. I will let you know how it goes! I use the backside of (amazon) buttons a lot and just figured out that I can use a nail polishing file to get them nice and matt if they are too shiny!
I bought the vest Claire pattern but would never consider wearing it by itself. It will definitely be a layering piece for me so I will probably go up a size.
Here in MS i am still solidly in summer knitting mode, absolutely no thought of fall/winter knits (other than to pick up my Kutovakika patterns 50%off 💃) since it is 100 degrees everyday and so humid and I knit outside while watching the kids the idea of holding a giant wooly sweater on my lap is abhorrent to me 😂😂 honestly even thinking about it makes me feel a bit sick! I cannot wait until you show us your handmade buttons even if you don’t use them for this project!

You really are my favourite & I subscribe to ALOT of channels about knitting 😂
Now with regards to naming your mannequin.
I have one that lives in my garage & comes out occasionally to try on my knits & we have called her Blanche.
It always makes us laugh when I say to my hubby “ Oh could you grab Blanche & bring her upstairs to model for me please” 😂
With regards to superwash yarn, I avoid it like the plague after spending weeks once knitting a complicated lace patterned sweater only for it grow to gigantic proportions upon blocking 😮. Never again will I touch the stuff 😂
Last but not least, in answer to your question on current WIPS.
I'm done with summer knits and I'm moving on to fall garment plans and Christmas socks for my kids
I love thé papier vest!
On you new vest gauge issue. Have you tried going up a needle size to see if you meet gauge that way? Or change to wooden needles might help you get your gauge. I haven't worked with linen yet but agree plant fibers grow so maybe the 2 stitches won't be a big differences.
Hi Nora…still working on my summer knits. I’m running behind on my summer projects and I am excited to use your discount code. Another great video ❤
Just love your vest!!
Definitely fall knitting. I finished the Sweetgum cardigan a couple of days ago and cast on the Renaculus sweater
Hi Nora. I love love love your podcasts! I never miss them! I had to laugh when you admitted your next rabbit hole…home made buttons! I can so relate!
Oh my!!! You could even paint them with a chocolatey nail varnish and then paint your nails in the same for an exact match! You're a genius 😅😂 xx
I completely understand the button issue - when you spend tens of hour working on a knit or sewn piece of clothing, you don't want to use mediocre buttons. Since I am a ceramicist, I just started making my own. I even do custom glazes for them to match my fabric, because why not 🙃✨️
I can 100% understand doing that!! It’s just so hard to find that perfect little finishing touch!
I like Harriet for your sweater hangar.
Another fantastic podcast , always brighten my day ❤
Thank you 🥰
Your "Feelgoodcablesweater" love the relaxed cables on it but being so oversized remined me of more of a poncho vibes and yes i agree when your to grab that it's because your a bit chilly and having your shoulder or chest exposed makes you want to pin it shut lol I look forward to seeing how your clay buttons come out and or if you venture into oven baked buttons and how they will be different ... inquiring minds want to know!
I do love that idea!! Thank you!!
Your clematis pronunciation was *chef's kiss* ❤
I definitely had to learn the practical part of wardrobe creation. I love to knit wooly knits, like love them! But, I live in Florida. I had to make peace with cotton and linen; fingering weight, and year round summer knitting. The draw to a huge worsted weight colorwork cardigan still exists! So hard to resist! 😂
thank you for reminding me to order wool wash! 😄
Jut finished the sailor swift and I may be doing that Icord edge on everything , so relaxing and it looks so nice!
Home run on the vest and the Tolsta!! ❤❤❤❤
to be honest I have been in fall knitting mode since May haha...
gah the two way tolsta is soooo good!!!!!! both necklines look so good on you! ♥️
Thank you!!!
Still summer knitting mode!! :D
Great episode. I am loving the little vest. Buttons are something to hunt for that’s for sure.
Moving to my fall knits for maximum wearing time!
Thanks for another great video 😊
I had such a disappointing experience with superwash once on a gift knit, I’ve never used it again. You’re brave, as always!! Too bad it didn’t stay at that pre-blocking size; your ideas for modifications are so smart. Seems like Medium would overall work great for you. I learn so much following your every project. 🎉❤
I’m thinking it is Cle-ma’-tis like the flower. 🌸
Hi Nora. I think you’ll get more use out of the sweater as an outer layering piece. When you are taking off the I-cord around the neck you could just take a few stitches and sew up the neck a bit before applying a new I-cord. That may be just enough to close up the V a bit
I knit 1 summer top. I have been knitting all fall and winter stuff cause I just love wool. Cotton- eh not so much!
Another great podcast. I enjoyed watching it. Always makes my day. See you next time.
I am on both: summer and winter knitting 😅 Knitting a silk dress and a woll cardigan 😁
