Years ago I was in a gorgeous store, trying on a pair of triple-digit loose linen pants. Wanted them, but $$$. Really really wanted them. I was staring at them in the communal mirror when a beautifully-dressed older woman stopped to stand next to me. We considered them together for a sec, and then she said "You don't want the linen pants. You want the beach house." And something clicked inside me. I'll never forget her -- wise, magnificent, role model.

I totally get this.i once purchased a very expensive two-tone beige jacket that was a tad too tight, but the image of myself standing at the rim of the Grand Canyon, a breeze blowing through my hair glittering in the sunlight, wearing THAT JACKET, was overwhelming. It was that Life I wanted, not that coat. That being so, I think It's OK to have the fantasy via clothing, why not?! 😊

    • @Citroen_2cv
      @Citroen_2cv 5 месяцев назад

@@KarenStrickholm That's the magic -- right there. Those of us who can access those moments are the lucky ones, I think. I love that moment of overwhelm. And I love that you went for the jacket. It might just be the dream, the glittering, that's the important thing --

Great episode! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: What I appreciate most about your podcasts is that you analyze all the little details. You really tear ideas apart to look at all sides of everything. Cool! There’s a lot more that I appreciate, but that’s the reason I’ll keep coming back.

I love your cozy cable sweater! My 2 cents: I agree with your thoughts to try the neck and shorten the length. I think the sweater would also benefit from more structure on the shoulders by running a crochet chain along the shoulder seam to limit the stretch. And lastly, I think you should throw it in the dryer for a bit before blocking. That type of yarn works best being 99% dry before blocking. All-in-all, good job!!!

Hi Nora! I've knitted two tees this summer with Sandnes garn Line, take into consideration that it doesn't stretch with blocking and even using it it doesn't grow much, so I suggest you to knit to the true misure you need. ❤ Happy knitting

I keep hearing " what a feeling" from flashdance when I see you in that cozy sweater. I think it looks amazing. Wear it for podcasts...you look beautiful. The flashdance reference is a compliment. Great off the shoulder , mid 80's look. Your vests/ tanks are lovely and look so practical yet elegant. Who in the world is criticizing your pronunciation?? Buttons, buttons, who's got the buttons? Im irrationally defensive of picky words toward you. Is that weird? I just think you are fab. Thanks for sharing your joy.

I absolutely love the luxurious lounge flashdanceish cozy sweater on you!! Yes it is totally impractical but really, who cares?!?!? When you cinched it up at the V it game me an idea. How about knitting two icord ties at the neck (kinda like a sweatshirt) that can dangle for the sexy look but you can tie it up for practical purposes. Love everything you do, try and you are such a brave, adventurous knitter!!

Once again Nora you’ve smashed it with your creativity & enthusiasm! You really are my favourite & I subscribe to ALOT of channels about knitting 😂
Now with regards to naming your mannequin.
I have one that lives in my garage & comes out occasionally to try on my knits & we have called her Blanche.
It always makes us laugh when I say to my hubby “ Oh could you grab Blanche & bring her upstairs to model for me please” 😂
With regards to superwash yarn, I avoid it like the plague after spending weeks once knitting a complicated lace patterned sweater only for it grow to gigantic proportions upon blocking 😮. Never again will I touch the stuff 😂
Last but not least, in answer to your question on current WIPS. I’m knitting the Holly sweater by Pernille Larsen 🎄🎅.

I am still knitting summer projects. I live in coastal NC and we have extended summers. I get less wear from winter knits. I love mohair but rarely use it unless it is in something open and light like Ranunculus or Love note. I never wear anything bulky, or Aran and get very little wear from worsted projects. I not nit necessarily enjoy knitting with plant fibers but my projects knit with them gets more use.

On you new vest gauge issue. Have you tried going up a needle size to see if you meet gauge that way? Or change to wooden needles might help you get your gauge. I haven't worked with linen yet but agree plant fibers grow so maybe the 2 stitches won't be a big differences.

Totally still in summer knitting mindset. It can be sweltering all the way through October here in Northern California, so I have a ways to go.
I also appreciate how you will rip out and remake a project to fit your vision. Many of my knitting friends have mocked my inclination to do this, but I think I’ve spent so much on the yarn and invested so much time, I want to LOVE to WEAR it, not just think it looks pretty folded on a shelf. I am happy to see many knitwear designers talk openly about how many times they rip their designs back to get the fit just “so.” It makes hand knits feel that much more special

Hi Nora, There’s no wrong way to say buttons. 😊. I’m a linguist. I’ve noticed over the past ten years it is becoming much more common to hear what’s called a “glottal stop” in place of an “aspirated T” sound in many words like this. So know that you are part of the leading edge of language change!! It’s subtly easier for the body to say it that way, so it makes sense and that is how language naturally changes over time. Changes are happening much faster now in the Internet age because of the worldwide sharing and speed of communication. 🎉

I’m not a linguist, so I don’t know how to describe how I’m hearing Nora pronounce “buttons,” but I think it’s different from the way most Americans pronounce it. To me, it sounds like the “T” sound in Nora’s “buttons” and “cotton” gets produced way back and low in her throat, after which she doesn’t fully bring things back to finish off the word with an “n” sound. Do you hear that too? It seems to me that most of us, no matter what we do with the “T” sound, do end the word “button” in a distinct “n” sound with air pushing through the nose. It doesn’t bother me in the least to hear Nora’s pronunciation, but I do notice it and I’ve tried to replicate it, and I find it uncomfortable to say it that way. Maybe I’m just weird.
Please please please understand that I’m not criticizing anyone, especially Nora, who’s got one of the absolute best podcasts on RUclips.

@@lizholzer4930 to my ear, after the “glottal stop,” the n still sounds the same as it would if the “tt” were fully enunciated. But isn’t it all interesting? I love everything about language-as long as we’re communicating, it’s all good!! 😊

@@lizholzer4930i say button the same way and never noticed the air coming out of my nose on the “n” sound, how strange to be suddenly aware of the sensation

😂 I don't know why this made me laugh so hard--I love to try and replicate the way other people say things too and haven't heard of many other people doing the same. As a singer, I found this technical description to be so satisfying and fascinating! I also thought I'd throw it out there that, until discovering RUclips, I had never heard someone pronounce the "tt" in "button" or "cotton." I wonder if it's a regional thing 🤷‍♀️ anyways, thanks for the compliment! 💛

It totally makes sense that the superwash gives you acrylic vibes because some superwash has a light coating of plastic. You might want to look for “eco” superwash, which ramps down the tooth of the wool cuticle but doesn’t have the coating. I stick to non superwash except for baby gifts because I much prefer the springy feel of regular wool-love that bounce!

I had such a disappointing experience with superwash once on a gift knit, I’ve never used it again. You’re brave, as always!! Too bad it didn’t stay at that pre-blocking size; your ideas for modifications are so smart. Seems like Medium would overall work great for you. I learn so much following your every project. 🎉❤

Hi Nora. I think you’ll get more use out of the sweater as an outer layering piece. When you are taking off the I-cord around the neck you could just take a few stitches and sew up the neck a bit before applying a new I-cord. That may be just enough to close up the V a bit

I think buttons for your vest will be better than the ties. Ok...the air dry wont work permanently. I would find the polymer clay (shape and bake ...then glaze)at Joanns. They also have a sealer/glaze. I do love home made buttons. I have made them a few times as gifts. I made my mom a hat that had buttons and I had each of the grandkids do a thumb print on each. You have to be aware of the thickness. They can become heavy if they are too thick. Cant wait to see what you come up with!

Hey Nora, I love the cable sweater, it looks super comfy🥰 If you’re unhappy with the fit, have you considered steeking (there are loads of useful videos on RUclips on how to do this) and turning it into a longer cardigan? I’ve done this on a couple of sweater projects where I wasn’t happy with the fit. I would love to hear more your opinions on steeking as a technique, it can be quite scary for beginners!

Also, I'm getting dress vibes from the big chunky sweater, I can see leaving off the sleeves and adding length to it!

I travelled to Flock so I am watching only now (I am never this late lol). I had the exact same thoughts for pretty much everything you said!! Figured out that warm wool sweater and deep/open v-necks don't work for me. Still working on learning to distinguish between the fantasy life and the real life I am living and to knit mostly appropriate garments... I just finished my Claire vest a couple days ago. Absolutely love it and how the pattern is written. But I agree, the back is a bit too low. I had the same short row thought and I do want to try it. I will let you know how it goes! I use the backside of (amazon) buttons a lot and just figured out that I can use a nail polishing file to get them nice and matt if they are too shiny!

Here in MS i am still solidly in summer knitting mode, absolutely no thought of fall/winter knits (other than to pick up my Kutovakika patterns 50%off 💃) since it is 100 degrees everyday and so humid and I knit outside while watching the kids the idea of holding a giant wooly sweater on my lap is abhorrent to me 😂😂 honestly even thinking about it makes me feel a bit sick!
I cannot wait until you show us your handmade buttons even if you don’t use them for this project!
