Hi, this is the Gingerbread Man (gotta love that name 🤦). While I acknowledge that the word "soter" does not always refer to salvation in a saving faith sense, you would have to ignore the context of 1 Timothy 4:10 to support your assumption that Savior refers to some sort of common grace. In the proceeding 4 verses Paul tells Timothy that he must be trained in the words of faith and doctrine and for him to dismiss silly myths (that is, those things opposed to faith and doctrine). Paul then tells Timothy that bodily exercise profits some, but godliness is of value both now and in the life to come. Then Paul tells Timothy exactly how it is profitable in this life and the life to come. We toil and labor because we hope in God who is the Savior of all men, especially those who believe. What does Timothy's toil and labor, his godliness which is profitable in the life to come, have to do with our hope in God as the Savior of all men? Well, nothing if it's talking about common grace which has no bearing on the non-elects next life. Rather, the toil and striving (preaching the words of faith and doctrine, the Gospel of Jesus Christ) is profitable because it brings about the salvation which is indeed available to all men. Honestly ask yourself, does this passage make more sense when read as being about rain and sunshine, or about the eternal life offered through the Gospel? I think the answer is obvious. Oh, and I might also add that "soter" in 1 Timothy 2:15 could very well refer to salvation through Christ if the child-bearing is a reference to Genesis 3:15 in that a woman would give birth to Messiah. In other words, some have argued that Paul is saying that even though it was the woman who was deceived into transgression by the Serpent, it was also a woman who brought the Messiah and therefore salvation into the world. That's just one interpretation so I am definitely not arguing that you must necessarily take it this way.

@@n.holt7 this is a good comment and I don’t think the context is opposed to it being a lesser than saving grace but I also believe it could be referring to covenant grace like that given to the visible people of God in the Exodus. But I don’t think you want this to devolve into a debate on covenant theology 🤣 from my perspective biblical training is profitable for the entire visible faith community because it exposes them to the means of grace whereby they can believe. But I’m not certain how you get around the meaning of salvation in that passage. Do you think it refers to saving faith? If so then what is all men & how are all saved but only those who believe especially saved?! Seems like that’s less in line with the context.

​@@BigPres-3PO To answer your question, the text no where says that all men are saved. As Jerry correctly pointed out, Savior is a title. In the same way that Christ is Lord of all men, yet not all submit to His Lordship nor receive the benefits of having Christ as Lord, so God is the Savior of all, in that He has sent Christ to die for all men, but only those who believe receive the benefits of God being their Savior. I have always disliked when people talk about making Christ your Lord and Savior. I understand what they mean, but God/Jesus is Lord and Savior of all men regardless of whether you receive Him as such. I guess my biggest objection to the common grace view is 1 Timothy 2:1-6 has already established that the salvation that God desires for all men is related to Christ's death with no mention of common grace. So when Paul brings up salvation in relation to all men I automatically connect that to what he has already said earlier. Secondly, what does our godliness, striving, or labor have to with God being the Savior of all men? Thanks for your friendly and amicable response!

@@n.holt7 that is a good point. I forgot the exact wording of 1 Timothy 4:10. Guess I should read it before I comment 🤣 was this a more narrow discussion about the extent of the atonement? So you believe Christ died for all men - all men meaning every child of Adam? And 1 Timothy 4:10 means the atonement is hypothetically for all men but especially for those who believe?

@TwitchyThelogian calvinism is one of the worst heresies to plague the world of chirstianiy. We didn't stray from calvinism, we strayed from orthodoxy. All calvinism revived was the personal heterodoxical opinions of a heretic. It deconstructs long understood concepts of God's love, salvation, and sin.

@TwitchyThelogian OK, that's fair calvinism didn't directly cause lukewarm Christianity, but straying from a flawed ideology is most definitely not the cause. Calvinism warps established concepts of God's love and salvation. The United States is a melting pot of heterodoxy. I would agree that steadfast heterodoxy is better than no steadfastness at all, but it's led to rampant heresies like jehovahs witness and the church of latter day saints. We will just find flaws, cite scripture mixed with personal opinions, and make a million more secular religions while the atheists laugh. Turn to ancient church tradition.

@@derrickmcfall8702 I don’t think it is an illusion. I think we need to define freedom biblically. For example, God has free will. God can’t sin because that would violate His nature. Therefore, free will is doing whatever u desire in accordance with your nature. That affirms that we are slaves to sin while maintaining that we are indeed free to some extent. I really think my Gerstner quote explains it best.
