Honestly, you just can't beat RetroArch. It's the be all end all for 2d emulation; if you're going into 3d, you're better off getting standalone emulators, merely from a performance perspective. Before that, though, RetroArch just offers a unified interface that allows you to configure all your retro systems more-or-less seamlessly. Universal controller mapping + short cuts for emulator options without ever touching a mouse and keyboard. And that's not even counting how easy ES-DE makes it (try reading the guide next time, it makes it a breeze), with preconfigured emulators, shaders, and overlays. Or, you could always buy a dedicated emulation handheld. For me, that's honestly the peak way to emulate games nowadays; there's something about having a dedicated system for retro games that just makes it feel special. Bonus points it looking like a tiny Game Boy.

Piracy and emulation helps preserve retro games. Those old copies of retro games that are being sold on eBay are NOT Preservation because those copies are being rotted away from the INSANE prices they are being listed and sold for.

The "washed out" and "hazy" parts of the older versions actually enhanced the game. The side by sides you show just emphasize that - the newer textures being higher definition and more color saturated just kind of takes away from the almost watercolor-esque style. It felt like pictures from a storybook. Obviously I don't know if that was ever the intent, but I guess it's one of those things where you don't realize how good it was until it's gone.

I grew up with this game on the 3DS. Using the circle pad instead of the D-pad handles very smoothly and beautifully for me, at least on my copy! For someone who hasn't grown up with the original 64 game, I really loved the 64 DS remake and it's one of my favorite games of all time. Yet I can understand the criticism of how the controls are a bit stiff using the D-pad and how the gameplay isn't super smooth. However, I think the controls are vastly improved just simply playing the game on the 3DS thanks a lot to the circle pad! So I can understand where you're coming from, but I still love this game regardless.👍😌

Don't underestimate your intuition! Those "nitpicks" were perfectly spot on criticism that definitely annoyed me enough to not even bother getting the HD remake. Clearly the older versions are far superior. Wish Nintendo would see this video

RetroArch is fine enough for *playing games*, especially on mobile, Linux, iPadOS, etc. But emulation is so much more than just playing games, that it's illogical for standalone emulators to shift development entirely into RetroArch cores. There just isn't enough functionality with RetroArch in terms of graphics layer toggling, memory hacking, or debugging. Tool-Assisted Speedruns or even LOTADs are also better done on standalone emulators, or Bizhawk. RetroArch will never fully replace standalone emulators. At worst, it'll be yet another application in the pile on the off-chance you decide to use it for Netplay or CRT filters or whatever. We developers at RetroAchievements stick with standalones or our own version of LibRetro for achievement development, as a testament to how RetroArch fails to be a "one size fits all" emulation solution.

Hmm, but what about using this on a non-HDR, non-4K TV? I have a regular early-2010s 1080p TV from Sony which I want to use for PS2, what do you think, will Tink help with that?

It depends, tbf if you only care about 1-2 consoles retroarch Is overkill, but as someone that regularly uses N64, SNES, Gameboy Advance/Color, NES and sega consoles i find retroarch better, but still i spend way more time on pcsx2 or rpcs3 so it's always dependent on how often you play other consoles

Sometimes I feel like going through my PC and doing a digital cleaning, but I do get a teeny bit overwhelmed when I see everything all at once. I guess I’ll follow an art rule and only organize one type of thing at a time. Like where my emu apps actually go, like do I want to store shortcuts in a folder, and what would I do with the games??
