Honestly yes. I had never played Mario 64 on the N64, only the DS as a kid. I was disappointed with this for that reason, and because of the fixed camera angles lol
Ok, here's my pitch: 64 DS release, minigames and all the levels. Normally I'd say graphical upgrades are a good thing, but it probably would upscale well and may end up looking worse. Everything is the same as the D.S. release BUT There is an absurdly specific set of steps to unlock Waluigi. Specifically, the steps from that one fake Nintendo Power article on it, maybe embellished a bit, and see who figures it out first.
switch 2 is coming out in 2025-2027 and going to out sell the ps6 and xbox series 7-11win basically free meals at burger pizza king mart to join us even because whats next for game companies to sell you but eat and game experiences because amazon owns them now and their due oppoly o wait that actually sounds kinda cool and that right there is why we need a ubi in place quit spending money on gaming entirely force them to make good games not everyone needs to be a scientist not everyone can visit the entire world not everyone can do anything or anything so lets quit kidding ourselves and just let the gamers game #games havent changed sense the ps2 days we just got broker and kids like dumber things so its the kids fault bahahaha companies still struggle to sell games on steam or other platforms because their to r18
Aside from the obvious issues like no Galaxy 2 and the Limited release window, the only real problem I have with 3D All Stars is the lack of extra bonus stuff. As you said the soundtrack is really nice but it's just the tip of the iceberg. No art gallery, concept artwork, developer interviews, bonus games or minigames, unlockables, no cool little museum modes or anything. It was just so bare bones compared to so many other game collections out there on the market.
Yeah this is not the definitive way to play any of these games Sure it makes it accesible for people who don’t wanna get into emulation, but it’s pretty easy to get into Any 3 of these games played with an emulator and an HD texture pack is objectively better And Mario Galaxy can be played with a real wii remote and a MayFlash dolphin sensor bar pretty easily
@@GlytchGamesNot even Sunshine? This is really the best I've seen Sunshine play. Unless there's a good HD pack out there, the cutscenes and the sizzle effect is really done well in HD. It's usually a glitchy mess on Dolphin.
Though apart from nearly guaranteeing that all their physical copies will sell right away, they don't benefit at all from scalping (as Nintendo never gets a cut of aftermarket sales)
@fortynights1513 Normally when there is a shortage in something or a projected one at least you'll end up with people buying multiple of said things and then selling them for more than what they bought it for knowing people will buy them. It happened with graphics cards during covid for instance since we had supply shortages. Another example would be things like movie or concert tickets that you know will sell out so you buy a bunch asap and then sell them off for profit
@@PrinceRoyceFan667I mean can I offer a piece of advice? Insulting your target customers might scare away sales. Maybe not this time but eventually that stuff catches up to you. I know from experience (not with scalping specifically but in general)
@@kirbkurb8875 a bit too much at times, like Jesus Christ, y'all could have not made a game for a year back when sakurai was the lead developer. No seriously, look at his track record, my God that's a lot of titles back to back.
btw, the reason they unlisted it from the eshop too, was so people would panic and buy it, not wanting to miss out, without actually considering if they really wanted it, what if they wanted to play it at a later date, but it was already gone? nintendo just abused fomo to make people impulse buy basically
Yeah I've heard of that but I still just can't make sense of it 😅 Cause like, you'd be surprised how many people I've encountered who've expressed interest in getting it now because they've only just acquired a Switch or something like that. And then I have to break it to them that they can't buy it unless their willing to shell $100 and that really sucks😂
@@Mr.Welbig yeah, i mean, it worked on me, i had a wii with mario galaxy, and 64 on virtual console, the only game i didn't have was sunshine, and even then i could just buy a gamecube disc since wii can play them, but i got it on switch instead, the fact that it was on newer hardware, and n64 wouldn't be dimmed was another reason, but i also just didn't want to miss out on buying it knowing that some time after, it's price would get jacked up. (sorry for my poor punctuation btw).
@@Mr.Welbig "they can't buy it unless their willing to shell $100 and that really sucks" $100? So, just ten dollars more than a new release? Sounds like a steal to me.
Holy shit, I actually found a RUclips video that gets straight to the point and doesn't spend the first part of the video talking about random shit. I love this so much.
What do you mean? You don't like listening to high School essays? (Video about new announced Mario game) Nintendo was founded in 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi........
I think that the bizzare limited release is what holds a lot of weight bringing the game's perception down. With how outrageous that limited E-shop release was, People's patience, mine included, were WAY down. My expectations were pretty reasonably set, I think, simmilar to what you were expecting, but I just cannot overstate how bitter the limited release made me.
I'm a casual but I just wanted to enjoy SM64 for the good old fashioned nostalgia and fun memories I had of playing it growing up. Getting to try out sunshine and galaxy that I had only ever played at friends houses was just an added bonus. Just wanted to add the casual perspective that this game was exactly what I expected and wanted it to be
same :) I had only played a little bit of galaxy on a laggy emulator, and never had a wii, so when it was suddently available + 2 other high praised games.. no down sides for me
Did you want it to be time limited so you may have missed this chance and couldn't wait? I feel like there are a lot of issues that exist that you absolutely didn't want but your unintentionally omitting.
Fun fact: the weird filtered look on the textures in the Wii U virtual console port is the anti aliasing they used on the textures. If you don’t upscale a small resolution texture BEFORE putting it through antialiasing and instead upscale with antialiasing, the texture appears weird and blurry. You’d have to force it to upscale with nearest neighbor mode only if you wanted a clean, regular pixel look instead of a blurry look (there are some wiiu mods for the virtual console that do that I think)
haven't seen your channel before, but the fact that the first words in the video actually answer the question in the title instead of only using the title as clickbait instantly makes me 100 times more intrigued in the video and your channel.
The thing that annoyed me the most about the initial release of this game was the lack of in-game button mapping. I am glad they finally listened to everyone and gave a classic/modern button mapping option. For me, Sunshine was extremely unplayable because I was used to the way it played on the GameCube.
My daughter really started playing games on switch, and I never played a Mario game after 64, so i enjoyed playing this with my daughter. I think we still have the physical copy.
On the whole thing of them not putting too much effort into this release, Mario 64’s textures are updated on the fly, as the rom is loaded. The folder in the files that these updates textures come from, is literally named “lazy texture replace” so that’s something.
Yeah I think I remember Digital Foundry mentioning something like that. Most of the textures don't look any better than the bilinear filtering you get most of the time you increase resolution. But for those like the HUD, Mario's "M" symbol, and Bowsers switch panels from Lethal Lava Land then it does look better. Still lame af on Nintendo's part.
Just to play devil's advocate (though I doubt this is actually the reason) "lazy" is a programming term that can mean incrementally, as-needed; rather than eagerly, meaning right now, all at once, immediately. It's not a very popular term, mostly reserved for functional programmers, but you never know.
@@GuyDude-hk8uy true. It does seem unlikely, but you never know, it’s Nintendo. They name things in weird ways. Looking at you, Mario galaxy soundtrack.
@@GuyDude-hk8uy That's interesting! I suppose the technique of replacing textures on the fly is actually more involved than you're typical texture pack replacement. Even so, outside of the HUD, I feel like I can count all the updated textures on one hand.
I had never played Mario Sunshine or Galaxy before. I appreciated this collection since I finished the 3 games and spent more than 80 hours happily playing it. I don´t care if it is just an emulator, I played it handheld in different hours, places, cities and had tons of fun. That´s the meaning of a game.
As I hadn’t played both Mario 64 nor sunshine, I am very happy that the games are as faithful as the originals, I wanted to play what people played years ago, not a modernised version. For example I wanted the blue coins in sunshine to feel shit, because that is how they were and now I can confidently say that they are an obnoxious game mechanic
Exactly, I get what you mean. I had never played 64 or Sunshine before 3D All-Stars, and now I can say Sunshine is probably my top 2 3D Mario games despite it's flaws
@@sneed1208 better is subjective, and you've misinterpreted their comment. game preservation is important in the era of needless remakes and remasters.
@@liamout I get the og comment and i understand that they wanted it to be faithful to the original. But for 60$ this is really unacceptable. It should have been 20$ or free with Nintendo online expansion. They really should have remastered galaxy and sunshine in the way they did Metroid prime. Only change (gameplay wise) the stuff that needs to be changed (like adding twin stick controls to Metroid) and then making the graphics 100x better. The Metroid remaster is literally 100% faithful to the og while still being better in basically every way. And people didn’t care they charged 40$ cause it was so well done, they could have done that and sold them for 40$ each easily but they didn’t. It’s not a huge ask when it’s Mario’s 35th anniversary. I get wanting to preserve the og game but Metroid remastered showed you can do that while remastering it and basically making it better in every way.
In my opinion it was good concept I love replaying these 3 games what they could have done so much more. The graphics could have been a little more remastered and redone new designs and they also could have added Super Mario Galaxy 2 to the collection.
Let's not forget that playing galaxy 1 in handheld mode is god awful. Honestly that game really needed a lot more control options. But Nintendo got really lazy with that release
@@Bhjdk didn't have to be entirely terrible. Could have had the option to use gyro for the cursor, or the right stick. Instead they thought using the touch screen would be a good idea. It's not

I still remember not being too invested in getting the game until a few days after they stopped selling it and came across my local GameStop at the mall. Curious I went ahead and asked the lady at the counter if they still had copies and she said definitely and I just went ahead and bought it considering it probably would’ve been rare some day. Thankfully I went ahead with the purchase!
Yeah, people got so angry at nintendo for saying the game wouldnt be sold after 3/31 when in actuality it was nintendo no longer printing and shipping this game which most game companies do lol. People get outraged over the stupidest shit
Every time I tell someone that I have a physical copy of this game, their like “wow, dude! No way!” Even though a physical copy of this game isn’t even rare.
Amazingly honest and in depth video addressing every issue that has ever raised about 3D All Stars, amazing job so subscribed to your channel without hesitation 👏🏻
Nintendo consistently does so little that when we get lacking products people are very quick to act as apologists because that's the norm for the company. I think the notion that we shouldn't expect more because it's "unrealistic" is insane. This is NINTENDO and this is the MARIO franchise. They have all the money and the talent they need to make something outstanding, and we have modern remaster collections like crash and spyro to compare to. Disregarding the limited release and lack of polish/options on release (irreversible camera controls were a major deal breaker), this collection, as is, should have been worth 30-40 dollars on release. It's so pathetically low effort, and not including galaxy 2 is unforgivable considering how unbelievably acclaimed that game is, and it's now unable to be purchased unless it's secondhand.
I hear you man, but that's Nintendo's track record for ya. Think about Mario's 25th anniversary when they dumped a SNES rom on a Wii disc and proceeded to sell it at full price. I really don't want to say people "shouldn't" expect more, but at this point Nintendo has made their intentions quite clear. What gets me is the inconsistency. Because while for the most part Nintendo does fuck all when releasing a "remastered" collection, they do once in a blue moon when all the planets align, totally overhaul a game for a new release. Link's Awakening, Prime Remastered, and now Mario RPG. But those seem extremely few and far between.
In a way i'm glad that the game isn't available for people to buy, because now Nintendo at least won't make more money on this poor excuse of a 3D collection.
@@Mr.WelbigI feel like that point is moot when immediately after saying that you give examples of Nintendo NOT doing what you say they do. Like how can you call basic model replacements “unrealistic expectations” and IMMEDIATELY AFTER show off the Metroid Prime remake? Do you not see how that hurts your point? It really just sounds like more needless defense of Nintendo’s laziness, which this video seems to be plagued with.
Nintendo products are high quality to the average gamer. Nevermind hardcore gamers and critics. Compared to big companies like Blizzard, Sony, Ubisoft, 2Kgames, WB games, or even Sega. Nintendo makes the most high quality products
I remember working at best buy and ringing up some kid and his nom for a copy of this game. He was trying to work through and rationalize his purchase to himself and he looked less and less convinced by the second lol
I got it and I like it very much. I never played any of the games included in it, so it was three entirely new experiences. Having played Sunshine I’ve now declared it my favourite of the 3D Mario platformers.
really? Sunshine? would genuinely love to hear your reasoning, always thought it was a rather mediocre entry in a lotta ways, but i guess that would make it more enjoyable for casuals
@spimbles I always preferred it because it's got a wide variety of challenges (despite the reused bosses) that drastically change the levels or focus on different areas each time. I find the pure collectathon "any order is valid" aspect of 64 stars and Odyssey moons to cheapen the level design. I think the blue coins are a good system the same way pieces of hearts work in Zelda, even if there should be something of a checklist or hint system. Plus, it's the only Mario game that feels like a real place, each level is coherent to its own world, instead of "generic grasslands > desert > waterscape > ice world" type of leveling the series typically has. And as you progress through the levels, the NPCs actually grow and change with you on your adventure. It feels closer to something the rpgs would use despite being a mainline game.

Hey thanks! To tell you the truth my upload rate is rather poor since I procrastinate like a mother fucker. My editing ain't that professional, but I always try to only upload when i'm totally happy with how a video turns out. Even if I end up completely hating it once it's finally uploaded 😂
Yeah, I don't understand how people get literally 12 million subscribers by playing games extremely badly, everyday. This guy, MrWelbig, didn't waste the 1st minute of his video copy pasting the same introduction and he was very concise telling us the bottom line first.
Many people bring up the Kirby collection, and I'll agree it definitely presented itself as a better collection celebrating Kirby's history. With loads of supplementary material, bonus features, artwork, music, etc......But the core content is still essentially a rom collection. Not complete overhauls of the games, not like how people expected 3D All Stars would be.
@@Mr.Welbig Well, at least it wasn't the Super Lazy (LOL, like "Super" Mario, almost missed typing that joke here...) copy and paste of Mario All Stars' first SNES iteration, i.e. the version without Super Mario World, also released as a celebratory Wii collection. The lazy port even had the SNES controller visual representation in the Wii game play! That's why, comparatively, the Kirby Wii collection is at least 50 to 60 % more sold complete than the Mario All Stars port complete sold asking price. Well too, that's a quick estimation of varying degrees, but Kirby's collection is always more for the good effort put forth! Hell, even the Ds version of the SNES "Kirby Super Star", dubbed "Kirby Super Star Ultra", was a vast improvement as well as it had more games and content! Nintendo does what Sega Do (bad English worded joke for the anti-Nintendo Sega campaign in the 90's) in that they MOSTLY pay no respect for the legacy of their bread and butter mascots Mario and Link (for legend of Zelda) such as Sega does with Sonic.
@Mr.Welbig sucks fhat Nintendo is such a small indie company and Mario is a franchise thats not well known, so they couldn't justify spending any money on making an actually good remaster/remake. Anyway, I need to go defend the recent Pokémon games, game freak is even smaller than Nintendo! We really need to be out here protecting these small companies, and I Thank you for your constant and fanboy attempts at doing so! Cheers!
@@Mr.Welbig There's literally nothing wrong with a wrong collection. It's game preservation and makes older games available on modern hardware. I think it's also a problem when a game gets a majorly overhauled remake for a modern console and there's no legitimate way to get the original, so the original version gets lost to time and gets replaced by the new version.
1:35 forgot why or where I read this, but I remember reading that this game only really released because they needed to appease shareholders and this game release was made limited so that they could get tons of sales QUICK with next to no development time/cost (which 100% worked). Honestly as someone who hadnt ever had the chance to play 2 of the three games and my tolerance for graphics is high, just the fact its a convenient way to play in an all in one package i was satisfied.
I really appreciated your take in this video. I acknowledge all these problems and admit that they have impacted my game play but having these games on switch is so much fun. I especially had a great time with my first play through of Mario 64 and a great HD revisit to galaxy. Thanks for making me smile and giving this game the time of day I think it deserves
I've owned the original games, Wii U Virtual Console versions, and now this collection. Overall I think it turned out pretty well, although widescreen 60fps support for all games would've been premium. At least offer it as an option. It is a shame it's not available anymore, which is why I bought 3 copies. 😏
I do find it a bit contradictory that you defend the removal of the BLJ on its technical merits, yet you also defend the lack of 60 FPS in spite of the technical and gameplay merits that it would bring to the table, especially for the fact that you took a moment to highlight them.

When playing SM64 through this collection, I encountered a glitch I had never seen in the N64 version. In Dire Dire Docks, there is a mission where you need to jump from moving poles in the ceiling to grab the red coins. However when I selected the mission from the menu, and made my way to the room, the poles were not loading in, and Bowser's sub was still there. It is supposed to be gone after you clear the first mission, which I did. The Sub stayed there no matter which mission I chose, and even after making sure I selected the red coin mission 4 times, every time I reached the room, the game was acting as if I was doing mission one. I had to leave and do some stars in a different level, because it was impossible to clear due to necessary parts of the level not spawning in. I have been playing this game pretty much my entire life, and I have never seen that happen before. This all happened TODAY, so it isn't an oversight that got patched like the issues in Sunshine.
I remember pre ordering this at announcement for the sole reason being i thought it would sell out before release, and, at the VERY least, would be a fun collectable. I ended up replaying galaxy on the pro controller and feel like i got time and money worth just from that alone.
I think what people dont like about patching speedrun glitches is that it was unintrusive on normal gameplay, and they went out of their way to remove that instead of making the actual game HD or proper widescreen or 60fps, which everyone would benefit from. Just another case of nintendo letting you play your way, as long as your way is exactly as they intended
That PS1 frogger soundtrack at the end hit me like a bag of bricks. Always loved that track, might have even been the start of my love for moody instrumental music when I was a kid
I loved this collection when it came out. I spent so much of my life playing all these games. Felt like I was jumping back into different eras of my life
I think that Nintendo taking it off the eShop just shows that they did this as none other than an act of fan service. They're fully aware that they could have better optimized these games re: 60 fps for Mario 64 etc. It clearly isn't a release that they were super proud of so they kept it as a quick celebration of Mario for us and then got rid of it. It never felt lazy to me, just a cool piece of collectors memorabilia.
Making it a limited release that would boost sales by the end of that fiscal year via FOMO without having to worry about a lower quality package of theirs staying on the eshop makes it seem like fan service? You acknowledge that they should know they can do better and you think it’s a good thing and it was all done for the fans instead of relatively easy profit? I genuinely don’t see how you’d end up with this perspective. Edit: your channel description says you’re a troll, that makes sense.
I understand your thoughts on shaking the wiimote. My favorite way to play Mario Kart Wii is with the Nuchuck and Remote, since doing a wheelie by flicking up the remote always felt satisfying
Really good video. I can’t get over this game is over three years old. i had mixed feelings about this game. As a kid who grew up playing Mario 64 DS, Galaxy, and making my way back to playing Sunshine this game was the perfect nostalgic sweet spot.
Filthy casual here. Absolutely love having 64 and Sunshine on the go. I agree with most of your points here. "Prettier and more convenient." Really wish it wasn't a limited release. It'd still be selling like hotcakes if they'd kept it up for sale.
I think if Nintendo sold this collection for like $40 USD instead of $60, people wouldn’t have complained so much. It being $60 is kind of insane for such old games and top that with how lazy the ports were and it feels like it wasn’t worth the money.
I disagree. I didn't get to play any of these games prior to this release and I am SO glad they didn't remaster them anymore so I can have as close to an original experience as possible. Totally worth the money to me.
no one ever said it was bad, the critics were about the laziness of the port, the pricing and most importantly the FOMO tactic and limited time availability, those games were not only legendary but they were the flagships of their respective consoles
Which are all bad things. If a game relies on this it makes a bad release. Remember this isn't Mario64, this isn't Sunshine, this isn't Galaxy. It is a exploitive FOMO tactic. That is bad.
I have a huge biased for this for one reason: sunshine. before the collection came out I had never played sunshine, my parents had sold out gamecube, and the only computer I had was a mac from 10 years ago, but when the collection came out, I could finally play it, I felt so happy. also galaxy too cause the copy on our wii was scratched.
Super Mario 3D All-Stars to me is such an amazing game, and I agree that speedrunning it is a little difficult with the small bugs removed and with sunshine’s controls being very different, it is still so fun to play solely for nostalgia. When I heard it was going to be a limited release I bought 2 copies, a hard copy and digital (sad I didn’t know about the special coins you could have gotten until about a year ago) and this was definitely so Nintendo could try and shill a bit more money but I’ll still keep my hard copy sealed because I feel like soon it’s going to be looked at as an investment like how a bunch of GameCube games now, you have to pay out the ass for a copy, let alone a complete, sealed new copy.
I remember buying this game collection mainly for sunshine. I was super hyped, plugged in my original purple gamecube controller and was super disappointed that the analog shoulder button didnt work properly and didnt touch sunshine ever since. Its good to know they support it by now and i will totally give the game another shot!
I played through Mario 64 on here once I first got this game when it released. Even though I already played it a bunch of times at that point, just played through it for completion sake. About a year later I played Mario 64 render 96 on my new 3ds at 60fps and that is probably my preferred way to play Mario 64 from now on and it’d be hard for me to go back to 3D All Stars ever again.

@@CoralCopperHeadI wouldnt say it's pirating given they already own the game legally. It's not like Nintendo would be making any money off this game regardless, since it has been delisted off the e-shop.

Dude can I just say thank you for making this video. It was fair and comprehensive about each game's strengths and weaknesses. It's weird, I was just thinking about the 3D All Stars collection and wanted to watch a video on whether they were good or not and no word of a lie your video showed up in my recommendations before I even looked anything up. It was like I was meant to see it 😂 Anyway great video, I look forward to the next video
what do you mean by 'polished'? Polished like they did with the old courses ported over to Mario Kart 8? If so, then hell no. The games were ported just right. They already looked decent even Mario 64 and didn't need any polishing. Unless you wanted a Mario Odysee graphic for all three games? Which I didn't. I would've liked more merchandise and extras, but the games themselves I'm perfectly happy with them. They all look beautiful even in handheld mode.
Honestly a 35th anniversary isn't really a special thing. 35 isn't really a relevant number other than being a multiple of 5- and those come every 5 years.
It was a great re-release and Sunshine was ported well-enough; it's one of my favorite mario platformers hands down so I was surprised to hear your claim that so many people didn't enjoy it. That certainly isn't the case for the speed running community.
As someone who casually practices speedrunning in that game I was very happy about how much easier spam spraying is lol, always struggled with that on GC
The collection itself after some patches is a perfectly FINE way to play these games. It's at least a good alternative if you don't have access to OG hardware or unofficial emulation. HOWEVER, what I hate about 3D All-Stars is the principle of it all. Nintendo putting out a product like this, charging $60, and scoring MILLIONS of copies sold has basically shown the rest of the industry that quality does not matter when re-releasing old games. As long as it has the skin of a popular franchise super glued onto it, it'll make bank. It's why we've seen so many lackluster or downright BAD re-releases of classic games in the past few years like Sonic Origins, GTA The Trilogy: Definitive Edition, Sony's really poor PS1 emulation on the PS5, Nintendo's very own poor N64 emulation on the Switch, and now we have the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection, which can't even be played on PC without a controller, and runs MGS2 at 30fps on the Switch when the PS2 version was at 60. 3D All-Stars is alright, but Nintendo has told the rest of the industry that they don't have to try. We're going into an age of really bad re-releases, and it's basically Nintendo's fault. Ironically, they've been cleaning up their act with Metroid Prime Remastered and the Pikmin ports. But everyone else is diving even further below the bar of quality we should expect as paying customers. This is why we really shouldn't demonize ROM downloading and unofficial emulation. Why should we give these companies $60 for a product worse than an emulator you can download for free?
They mapped spin to a button for convenience, accessibility and for handheld mode. You can also use the touch screen for star bits in handheld. I agree that split joy-cons are THE way to play Galaxy on Switch.
Recently found this channel and quite enjoyed your lookback on 3D All Stars. Its far from being a “good” port of Mario’s 3D adventures, but I bought this game back in 2020 for the simple reason of convenience. Having the ability to play 64, Sunshine and Galaxy on the go and in one package for me was well worth the buy considering I hadn’t played all these games before, and I’m one for actually playing games on an actual hardware (unless if the game is straight up impossible for me to play). With better optimization, development times, and removing a limited release window, I honestly wish I can see game franchises get a Mario 3D All Stars treatment for a porting collection. Like for example, making an Adventure trilogy collection by porting SA1, SA2, and Heroes to a modern console with updated optimization. Because despite Nintendo coming off as a bit scummy in some regards, I still find that in some of their ports and variations of games do they actually put in some love and attention. And besides, at least 3D All Stars is a hell of a lot better… than a certain Sonic Colours Remake…
I thought these were always pretty good, yeah there were a little overpriced and the limited availability hurt but being able to play these legendary games where ever you want in HD is huge, even if the controls aren't as good as the originals for Sunshine and 64.
I remember buying a copy before I even owned a switch I was a late adopter. And now I realize thank goodness I got it. Never played Galaxy before and it was my first time playing such a great game.
THANK YOU for that point about the original All-Stars and how it's not that different from what they did with 3D All-Stars, I've been saying that from the beginning. All-Stars is great but people do give it too much credit and exaggerate what it was. I've seen so many people call All-Stars "Ground-up remakes" and then accuse 3D All-Stars of _not_ being ground-up remakes (which personally I did not want at all in Galaxy's case anyway, an upres'd port with almost no changes is all I wanted there), even though actually, the original All-Stars games aren't remotely ground-up remakes at all. They're direct ports running almost identical code to the point that most glitches still exist to some degree, and heck, all the _unused_ stuff in Mario 3 that was in the NES version is also in All-Stars completely unchanged, even the NES debug mode is still present despite them making a new one for All-Stars. None of that would be there if they were remakes. All-Stars was just a collection of ports with upgraded visuals and sound, and that's exactly what 3D All-Stars also is, except that because the games in 3D All-Stars are, well, 3D, and are more modern, the standard for that kind of upgrade is fundamentally different and requires less, as the sound doesn't really need to be touched anymore unlike with the NES games, and you can't just swap in new sprites for the visuals like you could with the 2D titles. So doing a similar kind of upgrade with the 3D games was always just fundamentally not going to look as wow-ing to the average viewer despite it actually being kinda comparable...at least mostly (because O.G. All-Stars _did_ require effort to it thanks to all the new 16-bit tilesets and all).
All-stars actually did fix some bugs as well as make physics changes, there are also straight up redone sprites as well as more flashy additions like preview screens and save features.
@@varietychan Yeah but the bug fixes and physics changes were minor (if I'm not mistaken only Mario 1 and Lost Levels even had physics changes, and they were just slight, Mario 3 at least I'm pretty sure is basically identical). My point with bringing up the bugs is that the bugs that did return alone prove that they're not ground-up remakes at all. Abd the redone sprites and preview screens and all fall into the visual improvements category and they're not particularly big additions (Mario 3 doesn't even have them). Doesn't really change anything I said.
@@baerenonkel Yeah, but functionally that doesn't really change much about what the product is like. Every rerelease of Mario 64 (DS version aside) has been emulated anyway. While they _could_ have native-ported all 3 games (assuming they have the original source code for both 64 and Sunshine which they probably do) and that would have been better, at least if they were to bother to make additional enhancements besides what they did, functionally it doesn't really change my original point much at the end of the day about it not being _that_ different from what the OG All-Stars was in practice. Also, they're in different scenarios, the SNES had some very similar architecture to the NES since it was initially supposed to be backwards-compatible, and so porting the NES games would be way simpler and easier than trying to somehow emulate that, whereas none of that is the case with 3D All-Stars and the Switch so in 3D's case emulation would be the simpler route probably, so even then both collections took the simplest ways out to rerelease their games, it's just that the scenarios were different so the easier methods were different too.
I think the controller shake feels better for breaking open rocks and crystals and for launching from the stars due to the kinetic feel. Basically I like the shake when it's specifically a gimmick, because it's a fun gimmick in those situations. But for jumps during platforming or for attacking enemies (the most common uses) the button just feels better because it triggers the spin with a more satisfying timing, rather than fooling loose and imprecise.
Fucking hell, FINALLY. I'm so happy to hear someone share my opinion on the whole "shake to spin" thing in Galaxy. The _tactile feedback_ it gives is integral to the experience to me, that's just something that pressing a button can't provide.
I think people expected Mario 64 to get the same graphical treatment as the Xbox Live Arcade version of Perfect Dark or even the cancelled Goldeneye XBLA version.
The main reason I liked this game is that it came out in the same year that the earthquake in Puerto Rico happened. After it my parents lost their business due to the one thing that made all of our machinery work getting screwed up. I had to leave my Wii with those 3 games that I still had with some family members, pretty much as a gift for their kids. Getting this game felt like a redemption gift from Nintendo, it gave me back the 3 games that I lost and the one that was the most special ones to me, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy. Outside of that, I do understand the problems and I wish they where a lot better than what Nintendo gave us.
As someone who barely played 64 when it came out, barely played Sunshine when it came out, and never touched Galaxy This is perfect for me, and others like me
I enjoyed hearing your take on this collection, but when it comes to Super Mario 64 I really disagree in some parts, or just don't get your reasoning. 13:56 why present this as some obvious, foregone conclusion, when Nintendo have shown way more care and ambition with these things in the past? And I really wasn't expecting a huge remake, or for them to include the DS version, or anything massive. But I really did hope they could do some of the things emulators have long allowed. 60fps should've been included, because it feels much better, as you mentioned. If the reason to keep it 30fps was indeed because they "strive to maintain the original experience as much as possible" they could have still made it an option. But I don't find that reason believable in the first place. Apparently a resolution bump to 720p, and even using AI of all things to upscale the hud were completely fine? That makes no sense. They should've made it render in 1080p by default, and have an option to render it in lower resolutions (including the original), to appease players that wanted the original experience. Perhaps they could have even made that LOD model optional as well, so it doesn't distract you at a higher resolution (though I personally don't care about that).
I really don't agree with the notion that Nintendo has done much better in the past. Ocarina of Time Master Quest (And to that extend the GameCube promotional disc) was just a emulator rom compilation. The Kirby 20th Anniversary Collection, while presenting itself much more celebratory than 3D All Stars, and including a plethora of bonus supplementary material, still is just a emulator rom compilation, and mostly handled by HAL I believe. The Mario Advance series portrayed a lot more effort imho, but those have also scene backlash due to hardware limitations. The Zelda 3DS remakes, and Wii U remasters are really the only examples I can think of but even then Nintendo out sourced development for those titles. Once they released Virtual Console that's been their default retro rerelease format for years. And Virtual Console had plenty of detractors during it's heyday for not competing with fan emulators. The most they did was offer button remapping and save states on Wii U. Then they discontinued it in favor of Switch Online which also has scene plenty of detractors for not competing with fan emulation efforts. If emulation is available, Nintendo typically does jack all as history shows. So yes, I'm afraid that the expectations for Nintendo to do a 3D Mario compilation were always erroneously high. I'm sadden that so many (including myself) were disappointed, but that's just how Nintendo is for releasing their retro games.
My only complaint was the lack of Galaxy 2. It just doesn't feel complete without it. Funnily enough, I got the game for Sunshine, but I ended up playing 64 for the first time, and loving it.
Yeah, I'd say it was that bad. Expecting full remakes a la the original All Stars may not have been realistic, but the absolute bare minimum should have been everything running at 60fps, in widescreen, in 1080p. I know you say that you actually prefer running N64 games at their original resolutions, but clearly that wasn't Nintendo's priority given that SM64 runs at 720p here, and they update the other releases to 1080p and to have widescreen, so they clearly don't care about "preserving the original experience" in general here. Also, to reply to what you said about resolution, I really don't think a sub 480p image blown up to 1080p looks any closer to the original experience then it being rendered at 1080p does. It lacking Galaxy 2 is just an additional low blow, and it being a timed release is just spiteful and insulting, and I say that without the slightest bit of hyperbole or flippance: The ports were already below what even I would have expected as a worst case senarcio, it already lacked a major 3d mario game (the numbered sequel to a game IN the collection, at that), and on top of that they felt the need to nickle and dime people with FOMO. It's just gross, and I hesitate to say any amount of shame or mockery thrown at Nintendo over it is too great. And then, yeah, there's also no SM64DS or actual gameplay/content or many QoL additions or redone visuals. Again, I didn't expect those either, but just to re-state to further stress how the collection manages to miss the mark on basically anything anybody wanted beyond "Includes some 3d mario games". Are the games still playable and can you have fun with them? yeah, obviously, and there's definitely a metric you can use via that to say the collection is worth the price of admission: You're still getting 3 great games in one package. But I think that really removes a bunch of important context from the situation and just enables Nintendo's anti consumer practices and downright contempt (again, sounds extreme, but how else do you describe the FOMO release?) for some of it's fans. Lastly, regarding your point about 64's controls, even as somebody who grew up with the game on 64, I found it's controls to be bad. It's not the oversenstivity I find most frustrating, it's the opposite: It's that it takes Mario ages to go from a stop to a full run or to shift directions sharply while running, where his turn arc is so wide and gradual. People complain about the controls in Sonic Adventure and SA2 being too sensitive, but at least with that senstivity and instant turning and acceleration comes extreme responsiveness once you've mastered them.
I would've preferred a rerelease of the NDS version, with improved textures and analog controls, and maybe a removal of the second screen to match the platform. The NDS version has a lot better models and textures, and a bunch of extra content. Really needs to be brought back in some form.
There are 2 main reasons I love 3D All-Stars. It lets you play the games portably, which is why I bought it despite owning all the games already, Secondly, the controls on Super Mario Galaxy with Joy-Cons are amazing. I first tried it with the Pro Controller, which to me was awkward, and then I tried the Joy-Cons and fell in love with that control layout. It was so great that I didn’t want to stop playing the game. I 100 %ed the game faster the any other game before. The controls were that good.
I'm never selling my copy tbh, and that's because 3D All Stars was the first time I ever got to play these games because we can't afford to buy a gamecube and an N64 (but I did play Mario Galaxy on Wii U)
Crazy that it was already 3 years since this released! Im’ quite nostalgic for this collection despite it only being 3 years ago, because I enjoyed first buying this at the store, and I didn’t have internet back then so I couldn’t buy anything on the eshop, so it was fun experiencing these games!
I bought it 3 years ago and have absolutely no problem with it. Controls are weird but as somebody who wanted a more new gen way of playing Galaxy and Sunshine without emulation it was everything I wanted. It’s not like it was buggy or a change that ruins the experience. It’s perfect if you don’t want change. If you want to relive that feeling for all those years ago
Amazing collection but they missed Galaxy 2 and they made a horrible business practice with the digital limited release
This is why I miss the virtual console so much because they let you purchase games that you probably never got to play without pirating and not being able to miss out (until the death of the e shop this year)
the fact that galaxy 2 isn't on switch makes me so annoyed, because literally every other 3d mario game besides it, and 3d land, which, let's be honest not many people care about. Is on Switch, and I don't wanna have to boot up my Wii just to play galaxy 2.
@@Josuh i don't feel like downloading a emulator, setting up the emulator, getting galaxy 2 on the emulator, and getting everything working just for that
I really miss virtual console. It's crazy to think that most people actually didn't like it during it's heyday because of how the games were priced I believe. But I can speak as someone who grew up not owning many retro consoles that the virtual console was still perfect in letting a younger me play and grow his own personal little retro game collection.

I think you made a great point. Physical and Digital markets keep each other in check. This “strategy” actively instigates scalping.
Though apart from nearly guaranteeing that all their physical copies will sell right away, they don't benefit at all from scalping (as Nintendo never gets a cut of aftermarket sales)
What does “scalping” mean?
@fortynights1513 Normally when there is a shortage in something or a projected one at least you'll end up with people buying multiple of said things and then selling them for more than what they bought it for knowing people will buy them. It happened with graphics cards during covid for instance since we had supply shortages. Another example would be things like movie or concert tickets that you know will sell out so you buy a bunch asap and then sell them off for profit

The thing that annoyed me the most about the initial release of this game was the lack of in-game button mapping. I am glad they finally listened to everyone and gave a classic/modern button mapping option. For me, Sunshine was extremely unplayable because I was used to the way it played on the GameCube.

Was about to comment something similar. The pronunciation is driving me insane 😂

The thing for me is that they literally could've tried harder, like how Kirby's collection was super polished
You mean the one on the Wii?
16:39 now personally, I get the dev blocks weren’t faithful to the original but it was kinda nice having them. I feel like the other stuff was a bigger issue
Honestly the only issue I had with 3d all stars was the pricing. The quality would not be as much of an issue if the game was cheaper
or at least had SMG2 for that price

It’s insane how anything better than a minimally upgraded rom of the original is too much to expect
This makes me feel lucky that I chose to buy the physical copy before they raised the price of it.
I LOVE it when people just say the answer as their first line. It's gold comedy and also useful.

Did you check the N64 NSO version and see if it happens there too, like the Kirby 64 Swimming glitch?

I remember pre ordering this at announcement for the sole reason being i thought it would sell out before release, and, at the VERY least, would be a fun collectable. I ended up replaying galaxy on the pro controller and feel like i got time and money worth just from that alone.
I think what people dont like about patching speedrun glitches is that it was unintrusive on normal gameplay, and they went out of their way to remove that instead of making the actual game HD or proper widescreen or 60fps, which everyone would benefit from. Just another case of nintendo letting you play your way, as long as your way is exactly as they intended
Fun fact: The BLJ was patched by accident by Nintendo in the rumble version, They changed one small thing and that affected the backwards speed cap
"Patched by accident" is an odd way to say "fixed on purpose," but okay.
@coralcopperhead685 no, nobody knew about the BLJ at that time

Yeah a lower price would be nice, but Amazon had it for $50 for over a year, so it wasn't *too bad*

Yes. Mario’s 35th anniversary deserved much much better, and a game of this status should’ve been far more polished than it was.
what do you mean by 'polished'? Polished like they did with the old courses ported over to Mario Kart 8? If so, then hell no. The games were ported just right. They already looked decent even Mario 64 and didn't need any polishing. Unless you wanted a Mario Odysee graphic for all three games? Which I didn't. I would've liked more merchandise and extras, but the games themselves I'm perfectly happy with them. They all look beautiful even in handheld mode.
they are pretty much the exact same as the originals and people loved those so it did not need any polish since its not a remake but a collection
Honestly a 35th anniversary isn't really a special thing. 35 isn't really a relevant number other than being a multiple of 5- and those come every 5 years.
why is 35 any less relevant than any other anniversary? @@MrEdes7
It was a great re-release and Sunshine was ported well-enough; it's one of my favorite mario platformers hands down so I was surprised to hear your claim that so many people didn't enjoy it. That certainly isn't the case for the speed running community.

This is a fantastic video! A quality I'd expect to see from someone with 100K plus subscribers. Love the passion and insights :)
Don't buy bad products bud, that's why Nintendo keeps making them
I thought these were always pretty good, yeah there were a little overpriced and the limited availability hurt but being able to play these legendary games where ever you want in HD is huge, even if the controls aren't as good as the originals for Sunshine and 64.

“compailation”
3d Allstars isn’t ported, it’s emulated (Galaxy excluded)
I loved the collection. Still do. Played them all when I got them and play one each year since. Sunshine looks amazing in this collection 😀
As a fellow left-handed person I have to say that I am so confused when people think I would use right-stick to control and left-stick to look
Fucking hell, FINALLY. I'm so happy to hear someone share my opinion on the whole "shake to spin" thing in Galaxy. The _tactile feedback_ it gives is integral to the experience to me, that's just something that pressing a button can't provide.
I have to disagree with Mario 64’s resolution, I think low-poly games look really crisp in HD
As someone who barely played 64 when it came out, barely played Sunshine when it came out, and never touched Galaxy
This is perfect for me, and others like me
Just to add a cultural background, limited time release is very common in Japan for anniversary celebrations.
Anyone else love how this guy gave his short opinion straight up and then explained it? Wish other RUclipsrs did this
I had a lot of fun with it, for me it was worth it!

I would've preferred a rerelease of the NDS version, with improved textures and analog controls, and maybe a removal of the second screen to match the platform.
The NDS version has a lot better models and textures, and a bunch of extra content. Really needs to be brought back in some form.
Maybe remove that stupid tin where Mario has been kidnapped and you have to save him as Yoshi
I'm never selling my copy tbh, and that's because 3D All Stars was the first time I ever got to play these games because we can't afford to buy a gamecube and an N64 (but I did play Mario Galaxy on Wii U)
idk how to feel about the way you say compilation but this is a very good video still
Crazy that it was already 3 years since this released!
@@ampixxy boot up the PC then
@@Josuh i don't feel like downloading a emulator, setting up the emulator, getting galaxy 2 on the emulator, and getting everything working just for that
I really miss virtual console. It's crazy to think that most people actually didn't like it during it's heyday because of how the games were priced I believe. But I can speak as someone who grew up not owning many retro consoles that the virtual console was still perfect in letting a younger me play and grow his own personal little retro game collection.
@@ampixxy your loss then
wait for craptendo to release a lazy port and sell it for 70 bucks then
