    Fun fact: the version of Mario World in All Stars + World has a totally different sprite sheet for Luigi, not just a different head shape. He jumps differently, he slides down slopes on his knees, and he shoots fireballs from his mouth instead of his hands. Luigi canonically spits fire.

    My theory for why Mario 3D All-Stars is so bare-bones is that Nintendo heard all those rumors about a 3D Mario collection back in 2020, and just quickly threw something together. Probably not the case, but I think it would be funny.

    The real icing on the cake for the Wii version of All-Stars is that it wasn't even the best version, it didn't have Mario World.

    The original All-Stars (not the Wii port) is still really impressive to me conceptually. They remade 4 different games with really nice visuals. These were all also last-gen games at the time, and you're getting all 4 of them on one cartridge. While the physics are jankier and I think the original versions of each game are more fun, I think the overall package is fairly impressive, at least from a content/quality standpoint.
    3D All-Stars to me has always just felt like a bit lazy and unfinished. They have to pad out the menus with each game's music tracks to give the façade that the collection has a substantial amount of content. Sunshine had game dev assets shown because the developers didn't properly hide them in their emulation of it. Every game varies in its aspect ratio, resolution, and frame rate, which isn't incredibly noticeable, but still feels like something that could've been ironed out with more development time.
    What really sours 3D All-Stars for me though was the pricing model, having it be a limited run. I don't have an issue with them limiting the production of units to cut costs, or eventually halting production due to dwindling interest over time; I mostly have an issue with Nintendo essentially scaring everyone into pre-ordering as fast as possible to beat the scalpers, especially because of how bad scalpers were during the pandemic era. I don't want to assume Nintendo had ill-intent in this situation, but it does come across as an attempt to boost their fiscal quarter rather than how they framed it as "oh, we're limiting the sale window because this is meant to be a special event for Mario's birthday".
    I'd say neither collection is perfect, and if I was forced to choose between the two I'd have to choose 3D All-Stars just because there's more content there. But overall, I still have a greater appreciation for what All-Stars could pull off at the time versus what 3D All-Stars did in our modern day. All-Stars felt like a celebration of the Mario series up until that point, while 3D All-Stars felt like the bare minimum Nintendo had to do.

    • @PScoopYT
      @PScoopYT 7 месяцев назад +2

      Regarding the third point: It's how Nintendo treated anniversary stuffs. Even though I also don't agree with the idea.
      And it's funny how they end up overprinted the physical copies anyway, so even years later you still can get a copy easily. (Same goes for the new Game & Watch units as well, it's clear those were a niche product and it's not so valuable to people that they're gonna buy it from scalpers)

    • @dmk_yt
      @dmk_yt 7 месяцев назад +10

      @@jesusbarrera6916 I think the people who enjoy it do so because they like the games included. Most people aren't take an analytical look at the package as a whole, that doesn't matter to them.
      They often just want a way to play Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy, and for many people it does just that. Many people enjoy the collection because of the games included, and that's all they really wanted.
      For me personally, I saw the collection as underwhelming (especially considering the price tag), but I don't think people who enjoyed it were duped, I just think certain things that matter to me or you just don't matter to that individual.

      I agree if we're comparing All Stars SNES to All Stars 3D. The SNES title was clearly more ambitious, even if (as you said) I still find the NES games to ultimately be the superior versions.
      But if we're comparing AS3D to the Wii version of All Stars... oof. No. Sticking a single SNES rom on a disc and charging $30 for it was completely absurd, even with the additional trinkets they included. The ten sound effects on the soundtrack disc likely took up more space than the All Stars rom.

Something no one talks about is that all 3 games are ligit roms of the original games and sold on an emulator cartridge. No joke. If you extract the files... Its ligit an Emulator. Which is funny because Nintendo hates emulation, homebrew, and piracy (which I can understand piracy, I don't agree with piracy either... at least for games still available publicly through the company.) with a passion to the point of sueing anyone they catch... And actually breaking laws to win the cases... At least USA laws from what I can gather of their... interesting history. IDK why they think that they can sue us with their Japanese laws... Homebrew and emulators are legal in the USA... And Nintendo, because it's illegal in Japan, are sueing USA citizens for laws that don't apply to them! Like why...? So in total... Nintendo really really messed up here with the game...

    1:54 That's a programming flaw. There's a romhack that fixes the issue, the thing is that some programmerr at Nintendo forgot to adjust the Y position of when you hit a block, making you go upwards instead of bouncing down

      What Mario does when he hits a block is exactly the same as in the NES version; the reason it’s different is because in the NES game you would bonk against another invisible block that doesn’t get loaded in the SNES version. There’s a good article about it on cohost by Retro Game Mechanics Explained called “RGME Article #7: Brick Consistency” that goes into detail about it.

    It was extraordinarily bad timing that not only the Mario 64 decompilation (and subsequent ports to every device on the planet) but also Render96 came out at the same time. It doesn't help that the AI-upscaled Mario 64 assets and Sunshine cut-scenes were pretty blurry, not to mention that Galaxy's emulation had reduced color counts for performance reasons.

Games like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time really deserve to be brought to the modern era properly by being completely remade from the ground up with modern HD visuals, updated controls/ movement, and fully orchestrated soundtracks.

I'm 37 so I was there for it before it released and after and while I didn't own an SNES (I went from NES to Genesis to PS1, been with PlayStation since), I had plenty of friends who had one as well as my little brother. So I remember playing a Mario All Stars that was just the NES games in a compilation...no upgraded graphics or anything, just a re-release with the 4 games on it. Like I remember the same exact menu to choose the game...but the upgrades SNES graphics I don't remember AT ALL. But as far as I know, a Mario All Stars with just the NES releases on it...doesn't exist. And I don't know why I misremember it so much.

    3D All Stars at first glance may seem to have less content, but they at least provide the Switch the opportunity to play a GameCube and Wii game when the Switch still doesn’t have a whole ton of GameCube and Wii legacy content or NSO service.

    I'm not kidding. When 3D-All-Stars released, I thought back to the Wii All-Stars Collection and was like "man, back then, Nintendo was so much better. Look at this awesome collection!". And then I thought objectively about what was actually in that collection. Then I wondered how I didn't feel scammed back then. Like, the booklet was a step up compared to 3D (despite you could argue that we get some cool booklet-like art in the game-loading screens), but even back then, I was more about the game. And only when 3DAS released, it became clear to me, how low effort the actual game they released actually was xD

    I think why Nintendo didn't add the soundtracks for Super Mario 3D All-Stars to a CD is because most people now don't have a sterio/CD player now or have an old dusty one in their basement that they havn't used in years. Also, 3D All-Stars lets you turn off the screen of the Switch when listening to the soundtracks witch is cool because the Switch is a portable device.

    The thing with that weird quirk with Mario 1's brick-breaking physics in All-Stars is that that's actually a bug that Nintendo never fixed. What happens there is that they accidentally reversed the direction Mario gets pushed in when he hits the brick, like when he breaks it he's supposed to be sent at x velocity downwards, but instead he gets sent at x velocity but upwards. A bug like this could be as simple as accidentally removing or adding a minus sign in the code, that's how simple it is.
    There's a fan-made patch for the game that fixes this and it makes the All-Stars version of Mario 1 SO much better, arguably the definitive version of the game at that point (not necessarily for Lost Levels but I'm not gonna get into the details there; basically All-Stars, while it makes Game Overs more lenient in Lost Levels, also makes various other negative changes that harm the game and make it much more frustrating in some parts, mainly 8-3 and the bonus worlds). I highly recommend that if anyone wants to play All-Stars they play with this patch applied, I even applied it to my Wii copy (not the original 25th Anniversary release, the Nintendo Selects rerelease, got it in 2016) though the method to do so is a bit complicated, alongside a few other mods I felt like adding.
    I wish Nintendo themselves would go back and fix this bug for rereleases of All-Stars, but they never will because they don't want to alter their old games for the sake of preservation. Which makes sense for something like NSO, but the Wii version would have been the perfect opportunity to fix it if they had actually put effort into that release, especially since All-Stars should never have had that bug to begin with back in the 90s.
    Also this is completely unrelated to the rest of my comment, but to clarify for anyone who keeps saying this, All-Stars on SNES is NOT a collection of remakes, they're not built from the ground up at all: all 4 games are direct ports running nearly the exact same code as the NES versions, just with new sprites, sound, and a save feature added, and a few tweaks made here and there (mostly with Mario 1 and LL, less so with Mario 2 and Mario 3 is nearly untouched). Meaning it's really a collection of remasters, and thus technically the same thing as 3D All-Stars. Hence why many original bugs and even debug modes and unused content from the NES versions are still present in All-Stars, that would not happen if they were remakes. So _technically speaking_ even the original release of All-Stars isn't that different from 3D All-Stars, it just _feels_ a lot more substantial and not remotely as lame. It was still a great collection nonetheless, it doesn't have to be remakes because the NES originals were already great.

    You're not wrong about everyone just opening youtube if they want to listen to vgm but.. Nintendo themselves have a recent history of taking down music uploads for their games. If they had their way, the best and most accessible means of listening to the tracks would be 3D All-Stars.

    Honestly, I still prefer playing Galaxy on Wii from now on. Not only because the Wii Remote and Nunchuk feel more comfortable in my hands compared to the Joycons and even the pro controller, but it’s the little things they removed that make the 3DAS version inferior in my eyes, like the removal of Miis in the file select (I know that’s unnecessary in the first place but adding your Mii felt more like it was YOUR file and not some red plumber guy’s file), the gyro in the pointer going out of sync every minute, and the lack of Wii Remote sounds. I know the Joycons don’t have a speaker in them but the removal of these sounds leaves the game with less oomph. Stuff like the whimsical star bit sounds, the clicking in menus, the loud and in your face launch star noise, these alongside many other sounds make the game feel more magical every time I play it, while the lack of these in 3D All-Stars feels a bit too… empty.

    I appreciate the game for bringing down the price of Sunshine in the second hand market. That game alone was at least $50 before.
    I think just one more big addition would’ve helped. Maybe including 64DS with analog movement or Galaxy 2 would’ve gone a long long way.
