Funny enough, I use the watch functionality much more than the game, but it's really a great desk clock.
Hey Scott, y'all here. And you wanted answers about the Zelda game and watch. Here's the answers to your two questions. 1. The SNES game: a link to the past was not included because then they would have had to have the SNES button layout on the device, and using A and B on an SNES button layout to play NES and game boy games feels like ass. 2. They chose the original game boy version of link's awakening because they actually hadn't ever rereleased that version before. The GBC version was on 3ds virtual console, and switch went with a full remake. This way you could experience the original version of the game without buying batteries and modding your GB for backlighting.
My aunt got my sister and I these units after we showed interest in her old Game and Watch she dug up.I got the Mario one and my sister got the Zelda one. Thanks to this video I now know which of us is her favourite niece!
I have my Zelda G&W on my desk as a clock and I love it there. Its powered by a USB hub I got nearby and it's just been sitting there showing me the time since forever. In my opinion the best use of the thing.
I've got the Mario one set up on a little phone stand on my desk as a little desk clock, it's surprisingly legible from the other side of my bedroom (about 9 feet away), especially when I'm waking up and still a little bleary-eyed, even when it's cycling through its night-time scenes and everything is in shades of blue
I stuck a magnet on its back and put it on my refrigerator - I did the same thing with the Zelda one and they're pretty cool interactive fridge decorations
A color screen Game & Watch unit with all of that series’ games would be kinda neat tbh, would be a cool way to reprint these things for a modern audience.
i still like to take mine to work with me since it's the most pocketable gaming device on the planet and Ball is perfect for 2 minute stretches of fidgeting. i think if they'd come in closer to a $30 price they could have kept going with a series of these, but fr, for $50 bucks they're still the most affordable and most advanced Game&Watch units you're going to find and sometimes they'll even be on sale for as low as $30 so I still recommend getting them, especially if you see it that low
My very first video game was Game and Watch Mario Bros in 1988 for car rides when I was 5. That blue one Scott showed. It was my first introduction to Nintendo and Mario. I’ve still got it but had to replace the battery cover. I’m old.
The Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch saved my sanity during all the Zoom calls in 2020. I was constantly picking it up and playing it while folks figured out how to get their cameras/microphones/slide decks working during online meetings. It was a real comfort during lockdown, they could have charged $80 for it and I would have been happy with it.
I always felt that it was odd how the Super Mario Bros color Game and Watch included Ball but not the actual original Super Mario Bros Game and Watch game. I had that one as a kid and would have loved to play it again without forking over eBay prices to do so.
It was kinda neat that Nintendo made Game & Watches that played specific NES games. I have the Mario one and while I don't use it to play Mario 1, I still like having it as a little novelty item to show to my folks. And while the flaws with the Mario one were mostly fixed with the Zelda Game and Watch, I will say that the latter doesn't have the cool original art the Mario one got. I was hoping that Nintendo and Hal laboratories would do a Game and Watch themed to Kriby for his 30th anniversary last year... It's 2023 and I'm still waiting for it.
There is a video of him showing the studio he does these in. Sorry to ruin the illusion, but it's a table with a camera above it and a piece of carpet on the table. Lol
I don't know what gaming watch that is that he showed when he showed the original one because I thought that Mario Bros had to have two buttons on both sides so that you could move both Mario and Luigi up and down to grab the stuff. On the game boy advance you use up and down on the d-pad and then A and B on the other side.
You didnt mention that if you choose toplay the japanese version of the game it's the famicom disk version. They have different music, sound effects and texts. If you have the zelda one check it out.
It is quite fascinating that why Nintendo doesn't really care that much for x0th anniversaries, but for every x5th anniversaries they tend to go full celebratory.
I have both and really enjoy them. I’m not gonna lie but these helped me get through some boring online classes, just because they are easy to take out and play.
I'd love a Metroid and Kid Icarus version of these. It'd be extra cool if Metroid 2 and Myth and Monsters came with some of the Gameboy Color filters included.
I feel like I'm the reason that there's only two of these because whenever I set out with the goal of "I will buy every (X)", it goes nowhere. I vowed to buy every one of this "line" of Game & Watch in hopes that it would be a whole thing, maybe celebrating Donkey Kong, Kirby and Yoshi, but they stopped after Zelda. Then I vowed to buy every Xbox "Shift" controller when the Aqua Shift came out, then the Lunar Shift and Stellar Shift came out and then kinda died out. Stormcloud Vapor and Gold Shadow were similar, so I bought those too, but yeah, kinda ended on a wet fart with both commitments
I owned one of those blue Mario Game & Watches for about two weeks when I was in second grade...then some kid stole it out of my desk during lunch, and that was that. I'll probably have to grab one off of eBay some day!
I'm old enough to remember the game and watch and my parents gave me knockoffs. Lol. Once gameboy comes out, they would buy that for me for my first communion. Lol.
Really weird they didn't. It's like 256kb of data, and it's not like they sell Mario 3 on stores or something. It really didn't cost them anything, and would have made that Game & Watch infinitely better.
16:44 The only reason I see A Link to the Past not appear on the Zelda Game & Watch is that the SNES controller had an X and Y button as well as the A and B of the NES/GB/G&W. That said, it is odd that they chose the original Link's Awakening over DX.
Most of the time, in the 1st Quest of Legend Of Zelda, I would usually get 2 Heart Containers, the White Sword, buy the Blue Ring & then go into Level 3 first.
I found the Legend of Zelda one at Target completely by accident last year. They were doing some remodeling and they had a shelf with just a ton of random items just sitting there. I haven't seen any there since.
I wonder how many units Nintendo could sell if they simply released a new "Gameboy" compatible with original cartridges and did cartridge re-releases of games. It's absurd but could probably be pretty successful if they built it well, made the cartridges seem particularly collectable, and marketed it well.
The legend of Zelda one was absolutely worth it. All 3 classic titles? It’s def more of a collectors item but still..the fact I can whip out my little game and watch and play loz is amazing
i received the zelda one as a gift and it was my first proper encounter with the zelda 1 game outside weird flash game sites, and i beat it for the first time on this lil handheld over 11 days. i'll keep it with fondness
Such cool little trinkets that I wish Nintendo made more of as there are so many series that would pair well with the Game and Watch. Even taking the Game and Watch Gallery games and putting them on one of these units would be an absolute treat. Also, I think this a great way to bring back some series that have been dormant for a while and get them back into people's minds. For example, doing a two player versus Game and Watch unit for Punchout with both the game and Game and Watch version would be amazing.
I bought the Zelda G&W simply because Link’s Awakening is my favorite Zelda game (and one of my top 3 video games overall). I love having the original game boy version just sitting there at the ready.
Music I recognised: Main theme- Gyromite [NES] Mario Bros- Game And Watch Gallery Three [GBC] Super Mario Bros Theme Remix- [Forgot the game this was from, it's familiar though.] Overworld- Super Mario Brothers Three [NES]
17:34 _Oh, it's Mario. You can put him in any game you want_ Very true seeing as the final Game & Watch game was a rerelease of Ball using Mario titled Mario the Juggler.
Something that did not get mentioned- You get the famicom disk versions of Zelda and Zelda 2. That means different soundtracks, and tons of people haven’t heard that before in the west.
I have the SMB one, and I use it as a clock! In that regard/function I think it was absolutely worth my money. Adds a bit of fun to my room when I check the time.
The real missed opportunity with these Game & Watches was that Nintendo didn’t go the NES/SNES Classic Minis route and have a collection of G&W games in a single unit. That would have been cool! Especially if they then followed up with a Dual-Screen version with all the dual-screen game and watch games like Donkey Kong or Zelda.
18:31 I kinda go all in w/the idea of putting it in a shirt pocket and always take one w/me whenever I need to be dressed up. For whatever reason (probably its form factor and just how nice it looks), it feels far more acceptable to pull one of these out than to pull out my switch XD
Just wanted to share that there is a cheat code for the Game & Watch version that lets you play SMB1 and The Lost Levels with Infinite Lives. Playing The Lost Levels without worrying about getting a Game Over makes the game so much more palatable. You might even appreciate the level design.

On the game boy advance you use up and down on the d-pad and then A and B on the other side.
You didnt mention that if you choose toplay the japanese version of the game it's the famicom disk version. They have different music, sound effects and texts. If you have the zelda one check it out.
Yeah. One of the coolest things about it. When else has Nintendo of America or Europe ever let us play the original FCD versions?
It is quite fascinating that why Nintendo doesn't really care that much for x0th anniversaries,
but for every x5th anniversaries they tend to go full celebratory.
I can't wait for the day I have my own office and I fill the desk with stuff like this
I have both and really enjoy them. I’m not gonna lie but these helped me get through some boring online classes, just because they are easy to take out and play.
These are my fav types of vids I swear
I created a 3D plastic support and they become clocks at my living room and bedroom. Everyone asks about them and it was great!
I just bought the zelda one as a bday gift for myself, its such a cute little novelty.
They are still in stores here, see them at Walmart every time I go, I always go back there just to see and yup, a lot of em too
I owned one of those blue Mario Game & Watches for about two weeks when I was in second grade...then some kid stole it out of my desk during lunch, and that was that. I'll probably have to grab one off of eBay some day!
I'm old enough to remember the game and watch and my parents gave me knockoffs. Lol. Once gameboy comes out, they would buy that for me for my first communion. Lol.
If they put Mario 3 on it wouldve been an immediate purchase
No kidding. Mario bros 1, 2 and 3 would have been sweet
Really weird they didn't. It's like 256kb of data, and it's not like they sell Mario 3 on stores or something. It really didn't cost them anything, and would have made that Game & Watch infinitely better.
This Game & Watches are very underrated!
They’d sell by the millions if they were priced right… A lot of us in our 40s and 50s would be buying them.
The legend of Zelda one was absolutely worth it. All 3 classic titles? It’s def more of a collectors item but still..the fact I can whip out my little game and watch and play loz is amazing
I know Scott is old on the Nintendo game and watch but he reviewed even better
It just occurred to me that the WATCH in Game & Watch was a function of it. I just assumed it was part of the name.
Donkey kong didn’t even get noticed for the 40th 😢
"Super Mario Bros! Aw man what's this?" That got me good 🤣
Pain in the butt to find, but these are awesome.
I really wish they'd done a Kirby G&W for Kirby's 30th. I would have loved to get one of these with Kirby's Dreamland 1&2 and Kirby's Adventure.
If we got one of these for the main NES puzzle games like Dr. Mario, Yoshis Cookie, Tetris, and Hatris/ Tetris 2 would have been incredible.
Got both while both are underwhelming as a gaming device but i love them soo much ❤
i received the zelda one as a gift and it was my first proper encounter with the zelda 1 game outside weird flash game sites, and i beat it for the first time on this lil handheld over 11 days. i'll keep it with fondness
Music I recognised:
Main theme- Gyromite [NES]
Mario Bros- Game And Watch Gallery Three [GBC]
Super Mario Bros Theme Remix- [Forgot the game this was from, it's familiar though.]
Overworld- Super Mario Brothers Three [NES]
17:34 _Oh, it's Mario. You can put him in any game you want_
Very true seeing as the final Game & Watch game was a rerelease of Ball using Mario titled Mario the Juggler.
got the Mario one pretty cheap at a retro shop. had it with me nearly all the time and used it as a distraction to help quit nicotine
I'd say the timer in the Zelda one alone turns it from "pointless novelty" to "actual thing with utility".

I kinda go all in w/the idea of putting it in a shirt pocket and always take one w/me whenever I need to be dressed up.
Great video! I had these sitting for ages, played Mario mostly. You inspired me to make a video about these myself. Here’s a Mario Dad Joke. What does Mario make his pizzas 🍕 from? NINTEN DOUGH.
Got both love them for traveling play it for a bit and hand it to someone next to you to beat your score. I have no idea what I'm doing on the zelda one...
I do appreciate that Scott’s stash is almost exactly like Scott’s starting videos so the stupid “I miss the old Scott” comments never appear
did anyone else ever notice the mario GAME & WATCH has the same color scheme as the famicom (the japanese NES) i like that little touch
