Ps2 was a calculated success, Sony sold it for far cheaper than DVD players, the ps2 was literally every single person I knew's first DVD player. The calculated part? Sony themselves were the first company to have DVD players out in the US, and seriously, why were they so damn expensive back in the day?? Same deal happened with the ps3 and Blu Ray, but even more because Sony alone developed and owns Blu Ray tech

@@Yixdy A lot of people like to say the PS2 was only successful because of this. While DVD's are undoubtedly an aspect of it's success, the PS2 is considered by many as the greatest console of all time irrespective of it's sales cause it had arguably the greatest library on any console. It's games were key to it's success.

Fun take: Ghostbusters The Video Game never initially saw a local release outside of the PlayStation 2 and PS3 releases in Australia or the EU. As every other system version had to wait until later in November 2009 for the complete list. It was all part of an early marketing commission provided by Sony Computer Entertainment and Atari Games for a limited first refusal deal there.

Would be interesting to see how the gameplay was adapted to work with regular controllers and if it affected the game in a positive or negative way. Most of them lost the charm of the original, but I'd like to see if there are games that got better with normal controls.

It is super odd that this was done, given that even in its heyday generation, the PS2 was the weakest of the three biggest consoles. Even the Dreamcast outperforms the PS2 on some technical features and aspects.
The GameCube actually didn't have that much of a gap in terms of pure technical power between it and the Xbox, which was the high-end system of the 6th gen. That makes the GameCube ironically even more impressive since it was the smallest of the 6th gen systems. You'd expect something the size of the Xbox to be powerful like it was.
And then the Wii basically uses GameCube architecture, but cranks up the capacity of the system's components. Faster CPU, faster bus speed, faster and stronger everything. On a power scale, the Wii was basically two GameCubes duct taped together.
That makes the games that were ported from Wii to the PS2 even stranger, given you're going to have to take a huge hit in almost every department to get a Wii game to run on the PS2.

Okami is a rather complex situation for this case.
Clover studios, the devs behind the game, were actually merged into Capcom in 2007 (afaik most of them are now in PlatinumGames, but that's a different story for another time). As a result of this, the Wii port was actually handled by ready at dawn (devs of PSP god of war games). It had a troubled development as many of the original's assets are long lost gone, making it the most glitchiest version of the game (but still playable). The credits are also missing, likely die to licensing issues of the original song, as well as missing several visual effects.
However, the Wii version is probably more successful then the PS2 version, as if I recall correctly the PS2 version wasn't as a hit as the Wii version. The game itself is actually designed around analog controls as you only need to draw circles and lines only, which also makes some of the button mappings to be rather weird (waggle controls, imprecise nunchuk motion controls, etc.). The Japanese Wii version is more complete, having a proper credits sequence, slightly less glitchy and improved button bindings as well.

I got the PS2 version to use an actual controller for it, but it was pretty stripped down (it had Battra unlike the Wii though, strangely). And the DS version is a totally different game, so there sadly isn't a solid, "definitive" way to play Unleashed. Just have to wait for STEM I suppose.

It was a safe way to make up the lack of sales from the 360 version to bring it to the PS2 and then the PSP which was a under powered portable PS2. That made sense, the Wii to PS2 did not however.
