@Scott Pilgrim Yeah, if you go around looking up the most effective way to do anything it won't be hard. RPGs especially have that problem because as you said that if you figure out how to abuse skills and abilities it just becomes a 40 hour snooze fest
I like how Scott's complaint about marketing was "That money could have gone towards making your own exclusive, or working with a third party company..." instead of saying "that money could have gone towards actually improving your game"
But at least Scott doesn't "butter up" companies like fanboys do. This generation has been a bit meh. Scott calls them on their BS. I just wish more would cover the mess Nintendo created with NSO and the expansion pack. Pay more to play more.
@@deathstrike I’d argue that Xbox has gone above and beyond. They’re basically pioneering the service space (and setting things up in gaming to be way better than Netflix for movies/TV). PS has just been doing what they’ve always done (which never convinced me to enjoy their platform). Nintendo is just being overpriced as usual and flailing as they milk everything for as much as possible. Exclusives are still there, but that $350 switch (they legit saw Microsoft release the series S for $300 and Sony the all digital for $400 and still went ahead with that… and people still praised it and bought it (dammit)) and everything involving their online service is disgusting (why fix it when you can charge more for nothing). Not to mention what they seem to think the pokemon games are worth. The expansion pack especially just reveals how awful exclusives and a complete lack of actual preservation is to consumers.
Scott on Microsoft: "Everything can be bought out. Why build your own team when you can just steal somebody else's." 4 months later..... Microsoft buys Activision/Blizzard. Yep. nothing changed there
And The Coalition, but i think MS played a major role on the future of some studios they bought, some of them developed only for Xbox even before the adquistion like Undead Labs or Turn10
Scott's take on Microsoft is literally what I do for competitive games, literally steal their fucking build and mod it to what I like. That's what I do for card games, Pokemon video games, smash, Mario kart 8 deluxe, etc
I'm happy he's not on a strict schedule anymore, he was exhausted and the new schedule helps a lot. It gives him more flexibility with making a big bombastic episode without having to rush to get it out in a week.
I’m not sure if he does have a new schedule though, he hasn’t mentioned anything of it other than a tweet from about a month ago saying that next year may bring a slight schedule change
Hold up, he doesn't have the same schedule as before? I haven't been so up to date with his videos the last couple of weeks, but I thought he always released his videos on Sunday, with only a few exceptions (tho, now that I think about it, this video did come out on Friday, so maybe I just haven't been paying attention to that)
While it's fair to criticize MS for not doing more with Rare it's important to remember that Nintendo had every opportunity to buy the studio and chose not to. This was at a time when Rare was A) in need of a big investment and B) basically the face of Nintendo 64.
That's the thing I find comical. Everyone likes to act like Microsoft did nothing with Rare after buying them, when that just is not true. It wasn't even like they made bad games afterwards. Grabbed By The Ghoulies/ Kameo were pretty solid, and then Viva Pinata was fantastic. We got a Killer Instinct as well in 2013 (definitely one of the best fighting games of the last generation,) and a solid Battletoads in 2018. With Sea of Thieves and Everwild I feel their ips are definitely going to be used more often.
24:09 I mean, if the Ubisoft Gunk is lethal and deadly enough, those 60 minutes of fun will be able to last for the rest of your life Scott complaining about the nature of Console Exclusive games is actually a clever use of irony, referencing how 3D Dot Game Heroes' entire existence is basically exclusive to him now
Fun fact, the HD version of Soul Calibur 2 added all of the characters from various ports, except link. Had there been a Wii U port of it, we probably would have Link, Heihachi and Spawn in unison.
“Let’s pay Ubisoft to spit in our game!” “Oh, that’s at least 60 minutes of fun right there” Scott, I don’t think you know how hard that made me laugh, you are a god in humor
That’s more like what he says when going to an Olive Garden for the very first time on a family trip to Orlando and it’s the first night and nobody feels like searching for a local restaurant so they just go with the safe bet.
While I do agree that there is a "feeling" for Playstation exclusives like God of War or the Last of us Sony does publish a more diverse cataloge, they just don't market it as muchs. Look at the Little Big Planet franshise, Astrobot, Concrete Genie, Ratcher and Clank or Dreams. That said do miss the more wacky games from the PSP like Patapon or Loco Roco.
The PS3 is where Sony's cinemeatic streak really started. I've tried to find worthwhile games outside of the cinematic, and you can see the other types of games dying. Yes, there's Sly, Puppeteer and Ratchet, but those became outliers.
Infamous also is practically dead. While it had cutscenes, it wasn't anywhere near as cinematic compared to their current stuff. It honestly sucks that they are killing off their other genres (Ratchet and Clank is the exception.) Hopefully with Microsoft owning Double Fine as well as the release of Battletoads 2018 (great game,) we will get some more original Xbox style games! Fable coming back has me hopeful for a possible revival of Jade Empire, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, or Mechassault. Hell, Crackdown has so much potential as a game concept. It is basically open world Mario with explosions.
Ratchet and Clank is also not what it used to be Sony is prioritizing graphics and the look of the games instead of witty humour and fun gameplay which is what made the series great originally they’ve gone downhill badly in that regard too imo
It’s a good thing fighting games don’t really do exclusive characters anymore since tournaments just outright banned them since not everyone played the same version of a certain game
Yeah I've been saying this for years, I haven't bought a Sony console since PS2, all PlayStation games are practically the same to me now and I hate that, I really miss Jak and Sly Cooper.
@@MegaManNeo I’d say the first Last of Us was really the root of it. Scott already cited it, but the PS3 did still have many good experimental games like Journey, Tokyo Jungle, Sly 4, Lost in the Rain, Starhawk, Puppeteer, Beyond Two Souls, and some others in 2012-2013. When it comes to weird and nonsensical exclusivity, Atlus is probably one of the worst. Let's start with Persona. Every Persona game is exclusive for PlayStation, except for 4 Golden which came out on Steam eventually. Then you have the Persona Q games, which expects you to have already played Persona 3, 4 and 5 to fully appreciate them because these games are fanservice galore, exclusive for the 3DS. You also have Persona 4 Arena and Persona 5 Strikers, sequels to Persona 4 and 5 respectively, being multi-platform. And Shin Megami Tensei is just as weird. SMT 1, 2 and if... were all released for the Super Famicon; SMT 1 was also released for the Sega CD and PC Engine and all three games got PS1 remakes, with 1 and 2 also getting GBA ports. Fairly reasonable, makes sense. Then SMT NINE, that takes place during the events of SMT 1 and the time between SMT 1 and 2, came out exclusively for the og XBOX, a console that didn't have a lot of users in Japan. It sold as well as you'd expect. Then Nocturne came out and it was PlayStation exclusive and every single SMT released afterwards were all Nintendo exclusives. That is until Nocturne HD came out for PS4, Switch and Steam, finally. Then a year later SMT 5 was released exclusively for Switch, why? fuck you, that's why.
@@ygsr Like I can't believe they put the original Chain of Memories in GBA when KH is a PlayStation exclusive - I guess being the only popular handheld is the reason but it is still very weird.
@@zjzr08 I mean, considering there had only been one game before CoM, I wouldn't say KH as a franchise was ever a "PlayStation exclusive". Still a weird choice though.
Scott releases just close enough together so you don’t forget and far enough away so that when he does release it is a nice little event that you need to immediately watch
“The Intellivisons exclusive games consisted of basketball compared to Atari’s basketball” Intellivision literally had the naming rights to the four major sport leagues. They look the exact same as the plainly titled baseball or football, but the MLB name does spice it up
5:07 I've always been impressed with how Resident Evil 2 was ported to the N64 with more content when the original took up two CDs. The N64 version even had the FMV cutscenes despite the N64 not natively being able to play video files. Sure they were compressed to all hell, but that still doesn't take away from how impressive it is.
Can we also talk about how ever since SSBB, Super Smash Bros a console exclusive series had begun promoting console exclusives for other non-Nintendo consoles? You never see stuff like that often
I'm surprised he didn't talk about how Atlus handled their exclusives, because holy shit why is SMTV a switch exclusive and why are mainline persona games only on playstation but many of their spinoffs on different platforms it makes like no sense at all
Atlus has always annoyed me because in the 6th console generation they did single-print runs of games. Didn't matter that good word of mouth resulted in a game of their selling out and demand for more copies existed, Atlus didn't want to take the risk of producing surplus copies that never got sold. So a lot of Atlus published games, especially their GameCube exclusives like Cubivore and Go!Go! Hypergrind, from that generation are ridiculously expensive due to their rarity.
Honestly, Rocket League’s approach is pretty good for exclusive content. Sure, it’s just the same car as another one in the game, but it’s less of a reason to buy the game and more of a, “Hey, thanks for buying this version.” Shovel Knight on Nintendo systems having their exclusive content being amiibo support still irks me though.
Another example of Console exclusive content in games I can think of is when the third parties utilize the custom characters on each platform. For example with Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing, in the Xbox 360 version, you got to play as the Xbox Avatars, while on the Wii Version, you got to play as your Mii.
11:30 YES THANK YOU. I love PlayStation. I do. But when I look at the recent games they're churning out compared to the weird and off beat titles from PS1 to PS3 and even a little bit on PS4 if it's Limited Run, I feel a little bit hollow knowing Sony just wants to make what's essentially blockbuster movies. I started collecting PS1 games and my god alot of what I've found or bought would not be made on last gen or current gen consoles.
Totally agree. I was there for the PS2 and 3 era, and we had both consoles at one point. There was so much variety growing up! LittleBigPlanet was innovative and stylistically different from everything else. I wish more games that tested the waters with a new creative approach hit the mainstream and didn't get buried underneath the hundreds of thousands of other Indie titles.
Sony really wants to make blockbuster movies, but the problem is, THEY CAN. They MAKE movies, they own Columbia Pictures. They own movie franchises, they own Spiderman. There is truly nothing besides business and legalese that can prevent them from creating a movie instead of a game but NOOOOO, they rather not.
I first heard about Uniracers a couple days back, and played it for the first time the other day. I'm very surprised to see Scott mention it now- either we found out / got reminded about it through the same source or it was pure coincidence
You know what would be genius? Imagine if the first new episode of scott the woz to air on g4 was about gaming televison, which eventually would lead to scott learning hes on g4 “without him knowing”. Scott would then go to the studio and would do a skit with the rest of the cast until eventually just deciding to stay on the network.
I think one positive of exclusives is the possibility of allowing for console makers to make their platform a bit weird. That sale security from fans could open the door for gameplay styles we never would have thought of. If every game was multiplatform, we'd all just stick to one console or everyone would get high-end PCs
Another thing people often ignore is that console exclusives are the reasons why companies continue to improve their games, more competition = more good games. Before Sony decided to bring their games to PC, was there any multiplatform game that was on the level of God of War or Spiderman? Shadow of Colossus is one of the most unique game experience I ever played and it is still exclusive to Playstation consoles. Same with Nintendo, like them or hate them for their business practice, they continued to innovate the gameplay with each new Zelda, Metroid and Mario games that make other games that try to replicate the gameplay feel like cheap clones. I know that people want every game to be on every platform and it's cool that more people get to enjoy them, but console exclusives are still an important factor to get people to buy consoles as long as companies are still making them, other than convenience and physical aspects.
Nah only Nintendo do that, Microsoft doesn't even try and Sony barely does any experimentation. That's why Nintendo consoles are the only ones even worth considering, PlayStation and Xbox are just more locked down PCs.
As a baseball fan who played Xbox, the Show coming to Xbox was a godsend. Xbox hadn’t released a true licensed baseball sim since MLB 2k13. The only licensed game was RBI baseball and that was a lot more arcade style than it was a sim
If there's one publisher that likes signing the most random exclusivity deals that's Capcom, pretty much everything they develop is open to be bought by the console makers to become an exclusive of some sort. Then there's the multi headed hydra that is Sega where if something is getting ported to other platforms or not largely depends on how badly their different offices are miscommunicating that month.
Add square enix to that list too The most of the ff games being exclusive to ps2 along with ff14-16, ff7r still not being on pc or Xbox Shadow of the tomb raider exclusive to xbox along with outriders and many others being onto gamepass Braverly series and the 2d HD rpg games being exclusive to switch

@@price2camper and then theres kingdom hearts, where, for a while, they cbose what specific titles would be exclusive to specific consoles via throwing darts at a dartboard.
@@lachesis1541 For that specific case, there...wasn't really a development team available to make console KH games during the PS3 era. Square had all of their major dev teams on Final Fantasy 13 and Final Fantasy Versus 13 (which would later become 15), and that includes the devs who made KH1 and 2. FF13 and Vs13 went through development hell because Square execs thought making a new engine for these games and developing said games on this unfinished engine was a good idea. Any engine issues: holds the games back, which means more time, money, and people needed to resolve these ongoing issues. While that abomination was going on, it was decided to create lower budget handheld Kingdom Hearts titles to at least keep that series alive until a competent dev team can make a proper home console game. Square was pretty fucking brain dead during the PS3 era, to sum it up.
Lucas Della Maggiore I mean, the only logical option after buying a company renowned for their platformers, fighters, action-adventures,racing games, and first person shooters is to have them make shitty Kinect games.
So many IP's are left to die or gather dust sometimes, though the most egregious example I can think of is Rare Limited. The only thing they are working on lately is Sea of Thieves. And it's not a bad game but still if Smash Ultimate has shown and various 3D platformers people still care about 3D platformers of the collectathon genre and like to see Banjo & Kazooie. Heck the fact that the duo was the 2nd most voted character on the Smash Ballot should be enough for Microsoft to throw money at Rare, tell them to get to work, and maybe call for help from Playtonic. Though considering Playtonic got bought/absorbed into Tencent that might not be possible.
Because it was a game released when there was too many games like it at the time. Days gone was another story driven third person action game from Sony, Ziplash was another 2d platformer on Nintendo consoles.
Well another thing about exclusives were that they were games that actually took advantage and show cased the consoles/systems features like gyro controls or the two screens on a Nintendo DS, motions controls on the Wii/kinect etc.
God I remember late 360/PS3 era when the map packs DLC for Call of Duty would be out a month earlier on 360 than PS3.... and then it switched to PS4 DLC being out first. Also the lighting on Scott is very nice.
The part about ps4 exclusives feeling like The Last of Us is so true. Especially when it comes to God of War. After the first trailer ever for it I asked "who got Last of Us in God of War?"
It doesn't even play like god of war 1,2,3 and the psp games. I still get angry at that game and the praise it got from game journalists who of course love it because its more like a walk simulator then an actuall game. Hell my friend told me his 5 year old brother beat it on the hardest setting like come on the kid can't even put on his shoes alone.
@@HandheldGamer1991 I mean it is by no means a bad game, in fact it's a very good game. It's just a terrible God of War game. Imo 3 is the best in the series, with 2 being a very very close second. I can't beat it on that difficulty, but beat 2 and 3 on hard no problem. Kid is a prodigy.
Like Steam introduced a lot of games to me - classics in PC and also console games but in a more affordable prize - that the only edge console has now is portability and graphics which the latter with heavy graphics usually don't have the most favorite gameplay to me (although having decent enough graphics is still important).
I have literally never been excited about something being exclusive to a console I own, or just in general. It's always either "oh thank god it's not exclusive to the consoles I don't own" or "god dammit, I guess I'm still not playing Bloodborne". I just want to play Bloodborne man...

It honestly sucks that they are killing off their other genres (Ratchet and Clank is the exception.)

Kingdom Hearts was just as bad, if not worse before they decided to put every game on every console.
but who asked?

5:07 I've always been impressed with how Resident Evil 2 was ported to the N64 with more content when the original took up two CDs. The N64 version even had the FMV cutscenes despite the N64 not natively being able to play video files. Sure they were compressed to all hell, but that still doesn't take away from how impressive it is.
Can we also talk about how ever since SSBB, Super Smash Bros a console exclusive series had begun promoting console exclusives for other non-Nintendo consoles?
You never see stuff like that often
Snake's appearance in Brawl was made to promote MGS4, which was (and still is) a PS3 only game
I'm surprised he didn't talk about how Atlus handled their exclusives, because holy shit why is SMTV a switch exclusive and why are mainline persona games only on playstation but many of their spinoffs on different platforms it makes like no sense at all
SMTV is a timed exclusive.
Because Atlus is run by chimps.
SMT did start on Nintendo so at vary least it's understandable Nintendo would want it as a exclusive
He has to save material for other videos.
Probably one of the best takes of understanding console exclusivity out there. Very well done!

And I'm here for it!
Honestly, Rocket League’s approach is pretty good for exclusive content. Sure, it’s just the same car as another one in the game, but it’s less of a reason to buy the game and more of a, “Hey, thanks for buying this version.”
Shovel Knight on Nintendo systems having their exclusive content being amiibo support still irks me though.

Another example of Console exclusive content in games I can think of is when the third parties utilize the custom characters on each platform.
I think one positive of exclusives is the possibility of allowing for console makers to make their platform a bit weird. That sale security from fans could open the door for gameplay styles we never would have thought of. If every game was multiplatform, we'd all just stick to one console or everyone would get high-end PCs
I recommend everyone to get a good pc then do some piracy and emulations and virtualizations
@@luckymcgamer7747 You do it if it's so cheap and easy

22:29 He orders 19 copies of Shovel Knight.
New Scott video is always a treat
A 5 year old beat it on give me God of War difficulty!? I find that hard to believe. Not saying it isn't true, just a bit astonishing. I can't beat it on that difficulty, but beat 2 and 3 on hard no problem. Kid is a prodigy.
@@HandheldGamer1991 lol, a 5 year old beating give me god of war? you expect anyone to believe that? xD
Story wise, its alright, i just do wish they didnt change anything that the old God Of War used to be, it kinda lose the charm in it
@@tfgenobatssasin1788 I agree. Although I'm made that they blatantly lied about the explaining the gap from GOW3 to this one.
Honestly, it's a good day to be a Nintendo fan with a PC
Metroid Dread upscaled to 4k at 60fps was a treat
@@chexmixkitty yeah, and being able to play it before anyone else was great too
truuuue
Or a former nintendo fan because he got a pc like me
Like Steam introduced a lot of games to me - classics in PC and also console games but in a more affordable prize - that the only edge console has now is portability and graphics which the latter with heavy graphics usually don't have the most favorite gameplay to me (although having decent enough graphics is still important).
I have literally never been excited about something being exclusive to a console I own, or just in general. It's always either "oh thank god it's not exclusive to the consoles I don't own" or "god dammit, I guess I'm still not playing Bloodborne". I just want to play Bloodborne man...
