Tilt Antenna Mast
Building your own stand-alone ham radio antenna mast can be a fun and exciting project - especially when you get to do it over and over again. In this video we share with you our trials and tribulations of building different antenna masts to hold up a horizontal trapped dipole that we use with our Icom 7300.

What are Radio Waves?
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.2 года назад
Conceptualizing radio waves can be tricky for a lot of reasons. In this video, we explore the essence of what a radio wave is. We did not attempt to address the nuanced differences between various models of physics as this isn't a comparative analysis. Consequently, there are some details which will be saved for another time. In future videos, we will explore the math and science of how radio w...
Icom IC-7300 Settings for SSB Voice
Просмотров 83 тыс.2 года назад
Nothing terribly significant here for those that have been using this rig for a while, but it may be helpful for some new owners. This is a quick rundown of the voice (SSB) settings that I use to get on the air with the Icom IC-7300. I'm not attempting to teach you how to use the radio, or even set up the radio's physical connections; This is mostly about getting on the air with settings that w...
New Icom Time Adjustment Software - Check it out!!!
Просмотров 17 тыс.2 года назад
ICOM just (11/30/21) came out with a new piece of software. Now you can sync your radio's clock using a Windows or Android operating system. The manual states that this works for the Icom 705, 7100, 7300, 7600, 7610, 7850/51, and 9700. The ability to do this has existed through independently created scripts however, this is the first rollout from ICOM. This is version 1 of ST-4003W. *NOTE: In o...
Building a 2 meter Dipole Antenna (from a broom)
Просмотров 14 тыс.2 года назад
We built a 2m dipole antenna out of a broom handle, pvc and some other small pieces that we had laying around the house. Ham radio is such a wonderful hobby in part because simple builds like this are possible. No need for complicated and expensive builds... unless you want to! This amateur radio antenna's SWR turned out to be between 1.2 and 1.5 across the whole band, so not too bad.
Intro to Coax Cable Feedlines for Ham Radio
Просмотров 9 тыс.2 года назад
In this video we explore the basics of coax feedlines for beginners. Starting with the anatomy of a cable, we break down each component and briefly touch on their composition and purpose. Please note: I know that I use some oversimplifications - this isn't meant to be a comprehensive analysis, rather a quick start for someone new to the hobby. In a future video I'll give my recommendations of f...
Our First SOTA Activation - Baker Mountain
Просмотров 4612 года назад
Our very first SOTA activation was at the summit of Baker Mountain in Saranac Lake, NY. As a part of the Adirondacks, Baker is not one of the taller mountains, but it is one of the steepest ascents for new hikers. KC3RPH, KC3RPJ, and AC3DS took on the challenge and made some surprisingly distant contacts for only operating on 5 watts.

Getting the Icom 7300 into the field is made easy when you have a nice travel case for it. Here we show the step-by-step process of turning a normal pick-and-pull foam case into the perfect road ready storage solution. We refined the box in these steps: 1. Pluck the pick-and-pull 2. Bonded the foam layers with contact cement 3. Sealed and hardened the foam layers using spray plastidip 4. Adhere...

When you asked Hannah what she thought when she saw the broom, I thought she would say either, “chores” or “quiditch.” lol You have a lovely young girl who I am sure is inspired by all that you do. I hope to be blessed with a little me someday to teach about the world and watch grow. I loved the music. Question for you- is there a reason why someone would prefer to make a quarter wavelength antenna vs half, or full. I’m really trying to understand this question and answer and hope you may clarify.

Hello, ⚠️! The information mentioned in this video corresponds to a standard battery charging operation made of lithium Iron Phosphate. The optimal charge of a portable lithium Iron Phosphate LifePO4 battery is much more "complex" and requires a "BMS" device integrated inside the lithium Iron Phosphate LifePO4 battery. Using this internal "BMS" device installed by the manufacturer, you can for example charge a 100Ah/140Ah/200Ah battery etc. using a 40A/50A STABILIZED SWITCHING POWER SUPPLY (stabilized power supply used in radiocommunication, totally different from a stabilized linear laboratory power supply!). I myself charged my 140Ah (39% capacité remainig)) lithium Iron Phosphate LifePO4 battery with a 40A DIAMOND ANTENA stabilized switching power supply (14,6v) My Lithium Iron Phosphate LifePO4 battery was fully charged after about 2 hours. During the charging cycles, the Lithium Iron Phosphate LifePO4 battery repeatedly drew 40A. During the charging process, the "BMS" device regulated the amperage levels that fluctuated between 10A and 40A. Please note that the first charging cycle lasted about 5 minutes with a constant absorption rate of 40A! (VERY IMPORTANT!!) WHEN THEY ARE MANUFACTURED, LITHIUM IRON PHOSPHATE LIFEPO4 BATTERIES 100Ah and above ARE CHARGED AT AMPERATURE LEVELS AROUND 90A! Conclusion: to obtain an optimal charge and discharge of a lithium Iron Phosphate LifePO4 battery, A HIGH AND CONSTANT AMPERAGE LEVEL IS REQUIRED SO THAT THE "BMS" DEVICE CAN CARRY OUT THE MOST EFFICIENT AND OPTIMAL CHARGE OF THE ELEMENTS (BALANCING/CYCLING/ABSORPTION...) Sincerely

When you use the tune function or check the SWR the radio defaults to a low power CW signal. That is why you don't find a difference between RTTY and SSB when you tune. You also don't have to reduce power because the radio does it anyway. Great videoand very helpful for people that are new to the hobby.

For my UHF radio, I restrict it to 5W so I use a Dometic fridge adaptor which has a cigarette lighter socket. I can provide 6A or 72W, not sure about RF noise as a fridge doesn’t care. I also have a linear power supply but it is a big heavy bastard. I bought it in 2000 bud never used it much, it doesn’t (apparently) have capacitor disease. I would like to put a cigarette lighter plug on my Icom 7300 (for DXing) but the wires are too thick to connect to the plug. I might just use banana plugs to join it knowing I won’t exceed about 20W.
