  • Building your own stand-alone ham radio antenna mast can be a fun and exciting project - especially when you get to do it over and over again. In this video we share with you our trials and tribulations of building different antenna masts to hold up a horizontal trapped dipole that we use with our Icom 7300.
    1:05 - Version 1.0 (January 2019)
    5:37 - Version 1.1 (January 2019 - Improved couplers and stability)
    6:37 - Version 2.0 (Spring 2020)
    7:30 - Version 2.0 - Rebuild (Summer 2022)
V1 used 3/4" steel electrical conduit.
V2 used 1 3/8" steel fence rail and a winch system.

It’s awesome that you are teaching your children with hands on experience and knowledge as they grow with ham radio. Very cool to have them actively participate with the building and video work. N8IOK,

    Nice work guys!
Always liked the tilt over design for ease of maintenance.
Enjoy making many contacts on the new version!

Wow! I just watched one of your early videos where Benjamin was climbing a tree for an antenna. His voice is much deeper now! They grow up fast, right? And he's got his ham ticket, very good.

Love the blast from the past just got my call sign and daughter is 17 and she’s into coding so may have her get her license also. Read about the advantages.
Building base station now and ic-7300 just arrived and that’s what led me to the first video and had to comment on this one.
    Keep up the great work🥰✈️👍🏾💕💕💕👍🏾✈️🥰

oh no lol I had my sister do the same thing to an antenna of mine. I was so proud putting together and putting up my ventricle antenna and she was mowing and dragged it all over the yard bending it all up LOL. I wasnt mad it was kind of funny but it was expensive as it was a commercial antenna that I could not replace it.

Some fine engineering, and great to see dad/son working together! How does the horizontal trapped dipole work? I've never used one. 73, K8JLW

Thanks! The antenna we use was created by W9INN (silent key), who had a home business making these. It is a good performer for us. When the direction is correct, it is better than our Hustler 6BTV as it has some directionality to it. We don’t have it off the ground high enough to be perfect, but we could still get Europe with no problems even when the sun cycle wasn’t ideal. We highly recommend giving it a try if you have the space. 73 -AC3DS and KC3TFK

If you would have had 200 pounds to pull up do you think the crank would have allowed you to do without much trouble?
