Awesome equipment!
Lots of scraps around. Thanks for the tour.

Cool beans

Quite an impressive collection.
That auto bench does the work of 3 guys. It tensions the saws by computer. But the still have the old bench in case the new tech has an issue
@ that’s some really cool machinery
@@SwampSawyer everything you need to tension and sharpen a 48 ft bandsaw lol

No sir. Just day shift 7am to 430

Nice work and nice saw
Good job 🎉🎉
@ what? 😵
Thanks buddy
Very nice!
Very nice. What is the band's rpm?
I will have to find out. I don’t know the answer to that question
Thank you for sharing! Dan
Thank you for sharing! Da
I'm loving that double-bladed bandsaw
Ya it’s pretty neat all the grade lumber is cut with that. Then the cants go to a resaw the same size they just cut one side of the blade off
Great video! Thanks much!!
It’s quite the saw. I’m waiting to cut some walnut so I can get a good video
@ that walnut does saw up nice. We normally sell any we log out because if we saw it, it’s just for ourselves. We will be watching for it.
This mill will buy green walnut from other mills fresh cut piled tight. Steam it so all the sapwood turns brown. Then pile it on our patented drying sticks. Kiln dry it. Then pupils it down tight again to sell it to customers all over the world they do that at the same time sawing our own walnut normally 2 or 3 times a year 4/4 lumber. 8/4. And 12/4 lumber. We get some logs that are 48 to 50 inches on the small end but also get some really small stuff too. Just live saw right through the heart.
I often thought that the portable bandsaw companies should come up with a double cut bandsaw.
Timber king I believe has one. And also we have a heartwood bandsaw it’s a double cut. But it’s a portable saw on steroids that we have made the stay in one spot. I have a video of it
12 years ago a friend of mine asked me if I could make one of his bandsaw blades into a double cut. Told him sure thing. Marked all the spacing off and did most of the grinding with a Milwaukee hand grinder and finished it off with his auto sharpening machine. Worked like a charm but it started to wear out his wheels,so he quit using it. At the time,I suppose if we would have had a wider blade where the back set of teeth would have straddled the wheel,it might have worked better. Kapeesh?
🎉🎉❤
They just aren’t set up to cut the other way I know a few companies do Make larger portable double cuts
I should have also stated that we revamped all the guides on the machine (Wood Miser) and more or less customized the whole thing. But we weren’t expecting it to cut like it did at the time. Not to mention all the work it took to make the saw in the first place. ☺️
Make sure your settings are on 1080p
Interesting video but spoiled by shaking and blurred image . . .
Sometimes I got the camera too close to the saw. Sorry man
@@TheWildWestMill That's Ok. I just thought I'd mention it. I watch all you r=videos and they're fast and interesting especially how all that wood is handles so quickly and efficiently . . .
@ I appreciate that very much. I’ve tried all kinds of things to get the vibration out the GoPro is the best but it only records in 11 minute intervals then have to edit it all together with the phone I can make an hour long video but I gotta have it sitting just right. I use I tripod that sits on rubber then in wood to try and soak up the vibration. Sometimes I still get the camera too close. Thanks for the feedback and the support I don’t always watch the videos when I upload them
I try to saw fast hopefully it’s not too fast for some people
for winter don't you change out the regular dogs for winter dogs? I know that some softwood mills with a carriage would have boss dogs in use for the winter.
No we don’t have anything like that. We just use the the same ones I e we oils like to see what different ones would look like tho
What does Box Elder smell like when it's being sawed?
It weird. I think it just smells like dirt lol
The Manitoba maple is nothing but a box elder tree with a fancy name!
Ya here we have always called it Manitoba maple. Is just a trash species grows in in fence rows and weaves right inbetween the pcs of fence. In that’s states they call it box elder just depends what part of the world u live in
We think box elder is the fancy name lol
Merry Christmas
Thank you sir. Same to you and your family
excellent nasty logs, love it.
Manitoba maple, not known for its straight trunks I see.
It’s a trash species grows in fence rows in between fences on rail road tracks it hardly ever grows straight
@@TheWildWestMill Yup...it's just a trashy weak box alder tree.
Just a quick question here Wild West. You’re mills still using, and I hope I got the spelling right . Ligament Vita for saw guide material? Or did you ever as that is what we used. Just curious.
I use phenolic guide material
Love that Manitoba Maple!
I sawed a bunch of it that day
Love watching that machine, having it edge at the same time is a huge plus.
Ya it’s pretty neat just gotta have a pretty good operator if you over edge your boards can never get it back it’s tough to get the hang of it. If I had a set of lasers it would speed up my job. But we get by without lasers just from experience better to leave on too much bark. And re edge at a later time if needed We send all sawyers trimsaw operators and edger operators to a 3 day NHLA grading course. It really makes a huge different I suggested it to some other RUclips channels. Theta told me it wouldn’t help there operation which I think in foolish. I don’t know how it can couldn’t help
@@TheWildWestMill Just a Xmas side joke for you buddy! I live about 200 clicks from the Manitoba border and… like they would even HAVE Manitoba maple that big there.😁😉
@ ya no doubt Have a good Christmas and new years
@ you too!👍

Thank you for sharing! Dan
That's a 9.9 on the sphincter factor!!!! 😬😬😬😬
@@samspade9980 that there isn’t so bad. But when it slips off the hits the edger blades it shoots the log 20 feet back into hydraulic room. Had that happen a few times
@TheWildWestMill I worked at an old diesel mill in my younger days. The saw shaft has some play in it and the blade would move out away from the table just a bit, bad thrust bearings. A slab fell down and wedged against the table, caught the blade, and kicked back at our sawyer. Hit hill right above the eyebrows and literally folded his skull back about 3 inches. Knocked him over the skid beam behind him. He lived, and actually came back to work 4 months later, but he was never the same. So I treat bigger mill saws with a lot of respect.
OMG!!!!! Jason would be proud of you!!!! Good job!
I will get the hang of it. I usually pick things up pretty quick they want up to 6x10s in the bundles and both ends need to be trimmed with the way our trims saws are one guy does the trimming so once one end is trimmed gotta pull it across to trim other end and it’s just way to heavy we just aren’t really set up for that so splitting most of them is the only way. Or pick them up with the forklift. We will get it done no matter what. We always do. The price is completely terrible 65 cents a board ft there’s 1150 bdft in a bundle The Precuts from the gsngsaw are the money maker for us
That singer has some anger issues
He does. That’s slipknot. Picked it because the title of the song matches the lumber lol
Great song! I've been a fan for a long time. I'm also a craftsman /furniture builder/framer/ custom builder of horse barns for the last 45 years. Nice mill!!!
Awesome buddy. Thanks for watching
So! If I recall correctly, you had said that box elder loses it's orange color when dry...Supposing you take the boards to the planer, dress four sides, (spray, brush, or roll) a clear Polly on the boards as a sealer, and then air dry the lumber.... What are the chances of the color remaining? Is that an experiment you would be willing to try? If it would work, you may be able to sell it as a premium board......Dan
I was told it loses it colour. But I’m going to find out for myself. I’m thinking there has to be a way to keep the colour I would imagine what you suggested should work. I have a 30 minute video of sawing box elder to upload we sawed a bunch of it today Sure I can give it a try. See what happens. I’m not sure if T.H.E Eddie horvath might know
Thank you brother!
Thank you for sharing another great video! Merry Christmas to you and your family, and to the mill crew and their families!
Thank you Dan. Merry Christmas to you and your family as well. Hope you have a great holiday. Thanks for the support in the short time the channel has been running. Just started it in July. It has grown very fast
Safe sawing and have a Merry Xmas!
Thanks John have a great Holiday. I have a few more uploads we aren’t going back to work until Jan. 2 So I’ll try to keep everyone happy
Some very nice logs, enjoyed!
Ya nicer logs for a change
Im not a grader but stated out stacking and made my way up to the head sawer, i get everything the grader is saying and agreed with him. A good sawer will make chicken soup out of chicken poop.
That day they were sawing black oak it was all suppose to be blocked up into cants unless the lumber was select or better. And 15% 1 common. But way too much 2 and 3 common was coming down the line it’s difficult for a grade sawyer to all of a sudden stop sawing grade and saw cants but they could be f been getting huge over run. Suppose to have been cutting 6x random and 4x6. And 3.5x6. All for an order at the pallet mill to be cut into 7/8x6 with a brewer Gangsaw. They shoulda just transferred me over the logs and I would have done it myself lol I like that saying that’s funny. But your absolutely right
Not bad looking cottonwood. When was the last time the roof of your sawyer's box was cleaned?
It’s been a little bit. It’s going to get done next week when we aren’t working. It’s on the list lol
@TheWildWestMill downtime is cleanup time in any mill. No need for a repeat of what happened here in BC back in 2014.
We keep it clean
@@TheWildWestMill Good for u guys. A clean mill doesn't catch on fire.
Top of the cab has been neglected it fills up so fast tho. We blow down everything up high with 20ft poles attached to the air hose the turn the big fans on
So you buy this by the cord or ton or do you have to scale that crooked stuff?
It’s all scaled footage is taken off for crooks or rot that’s what most sawmills do. They are not all perfectly straight. And it’s a pallet mill
I’m sure you have seen the crap I get to cut everyday lol
💯 I see it. Most of those logs would never get loaded on my log deck. I run a small manual circle sawmill in northern NY,sawing mostly softwood.
I’ve gotten pretty good a sawing the ugly crooked logs but if they are too bad they just go to the chipper my old debarker guy would not even debark them and kick them off before they got too me. But this new debarker operator arms in everything no matter how many times I tell him not too some guy of the logs are a waste of everyone’s time. If they are too crooked normally they go right to the firewood pile but it depends who is sorting the logs. Some guys care about their job and some are just there for a pay cheque I try to take pride in what I do because I enjoy it So I just do my best One more day at f sawing tomorrow. Then we are off until Jan. 2nd. Have a great Holiday
We used to cut that stuff for "bug wood", it went to the charcoal mill
Enjoy all your videos. Good job. Merry Christmas
Thank you Sir .. I enjoy yours as well I never miss one. Merry Christmas to you as well .. hopefully Santa is good to you. Have a great Holiday!
I see what tried to do, a Jason Nichols split and turn. Not easy is it?
Haha. No it sure isn’t easy. I did it probably 8 more times that day Ended the day being 5 for 8 lol The edger just isn’t made to cut 6 “ deep. 4 “ is the deepest it will do. It can do it. Just very hard on it. I will master it I have 20 bundles to cut of 6” X random width 10 ft legging. So they want 4” to 10” and they guys gotta pile it. So I’m trying to split the wide ones a 6x10 10ft long must be 600 pounds or more
You'll get er done! Merry Christmas to you and your family, as well as the employees and their families! Dan
Thanks Dan. Same to you. We got another day of sawing tomorrow and a half day Tuesday Then back on Jan. 2. So not much time off Have a great holiday
Hate those lol😊
I get it a lot because the pallets logs full of tension. Twisted and crooked
Alot of our side hill Douglas fir is bad. Even our cedar gets pretty bad
@@kaienochsen3821 I bet it would be for sure. I only have a half inch or less between the saw blade and the splitter but some of these logs will start to pinch as soon as I cut them then dive in between the splitter and saw it’s frustrating sometimes
Timber bound
Quick and easy, well done!
We have an order for 25 bundles. Of 8ft. 8x8s and 5 bundles of 10ft 8x8s. We got to 10 footers done already So it’s really great when 2 can be cut from one log
Does the Manitoba Maple ( Box Elder ) ever get shipped across to the USA? To Maine perhaps? Love me some of them boards!!!!
I think you would be better off to get it from Mark Galicic I know he saws it sometimes it would be less headache for you since it doesn’t need to cross the border I would think anyways
I’ve heard when it dries the red fades away. So what I will do it keep some to the side and dry it and see what happens and I’ll let you know buddy. If there’s someway I can ship it to you at that point. We can figure that out
Thank you my friend! Dan
Nice
I have been getting a lot of logs like that 20” log I just square it up 16x16 then I can get two 3” cants off each side and a board then I’m left with 16x8 then just split it. I get crazy over run cuz not taking a bunch of 1” lumber
Thanks for showing some of details on the mill, I was going to ask you how many horsepower your sawing with but you answered before I could ask lol. Interesting to see those no slip cog drive belts being driven by electric motors, I'm sure it makes for a pretty strong saw head compared to diesel engine driven saws that I'm used to.
You see other mills run multiple belts but if you have 6 belts on there there not all tensioned the same I’m sure of it. So it’s possible out of 6 belts only one or 2 is really driving that saw. Especially with a top saw You want that thing to cut properly These belts are a little more expensive but we have no issues with them. They do break from time to time but it’s cuz the cogs tear off but that rarely happens on the headsaw. It happens on the edger mostly it has less power but still turning 3. 22” sawblades. And if I’m cutting 4” deep with all 3 blades it’s pretty tough on it
@@TheWildWestMill I know all to well about v belts not all being even in length our little mill used 5 "c" size belts on the head saw. When we would order a new set regardless of brand there would be one sometimes two belts a hair to long so three belts would be doing most of the work. When that happened they would get smoked pretty quick you would slowly lose pully traction in a heavy cut very maddening when you were going good, we still got decent service life from a set but nothing compared to what you guys are using.
@@StuInTheSticks I think that’s what happens when you see guys that have a top saw when the top one runs into the log and leaves a line. I have a buddy with a top saw and he cuts high dollar hardwood everyday and both his saws cut perfect in line with each other
@@TheWildWestMill Maintaining fairly steady rpm's is how you saw straight lumber saw's are tensioned or "hammered" to work at whatever rpm range a mill is setup to run at but when that's constantly changing ie slowing down in the cut it will make the saw drift, hence uneven lumber thickness; there are many other factor's as well that come into play for sure. Around my area guy's ran mill's with underpowered power unit's trying to push through the cut to fast so a lot of bad low grade off dimensioned lumber was produced, well that and some of them didn't know how to sharpen properly lol.
Yes sir our saws are hammered for 550 rpm’s. We were having problems with how it was being sharpened a few years back but we were using an andrus grinder and myself and the other sawyer would sharpen slightly different with that grinder so we bought a jockey grinder and it’s been much better. I notice if you watch helmsburg sawmill his top saw leaves a pretty healthy ridge sometimes when he’s cutting But like you said it’s probably underpowered and I notice he uses multiple belts to drive the saws I know years ago. We got a cheap saw trying to save some money. And that saw was just complete crap I have a winter blade that the steel one s thicker than the regular saws we use and the sawbits the kerf is much wider I’ve never gotten to use it. I was told only if it stays -15 for multiple weeks. But in 5 years I’ve just never needed it I ran out of good saws one summer they all needed some work. I tried using that winter blade lol but just could not get it to cut well
It seems to me that everytime you put out a video it's about a hardwood specie that I've never heard of. I guess that what happens when you r only exposed to softwood species. LOL!
I have 10 more Manitoba maple to saw on Monday. It’s also called box elder. That’s good. Keep you coming back to watch I don’t get to saw the big grade logs like other mills on RUclips. Hopefully that will change if we put in the top saw
You will love the top saw! So little waste, meaning more board/cants for the buck! 40+years ago, we had the top saw, and sawn large site pine like easy peasy!!!!
Hate to see the dog loose control of the log..... Dan
There was major tension in that log so it kept pinching at the splitter. I’m not sure what it cost. We consider it a trash species of tree even tho the lumber is beautiful
I almost lost that same log twice Was probably pushing the saw way too hard hard
How often do you clean the sawdust out of your mill?
We are constantly cleaning because dry powdery sawdust css as n be very flammable but production always comes first
I get that! Saturday maintenance job. Blow down the rafters, sweep the decks!
Once a year we will rig up some 20ft pipe and blow sawdust off the walls and on top of the equipment
