My largest social network is the Society for Creative Anachronism. This is where I wear most of my historical costuming, and have made the majority of my friends as an adult. This year I've been brining my Canon M50 out to do some better photography and help capture some of my friend's treasured memories. At Battlemoor I started to feel silly walking around with a modern camera strap and wanted...

Easy Thrift Flip Regency Petticoat DIY!

Sometimes you just get so excited to wear a dress for a party, you try to skip corners with the underpinnings. I am guilty of it, and I know many of you are as well. The problem with skipping layers with historical costuming is that they are often essential to creating the correct shape for that time period. It might now seem important, but this petticoat is actually really important for being ...
Red Threaded Pattern: My Regency Corset Journey

And now for something different. I made a regency corset (still called stays at this point in history) I used a corset pattern from @RedthreadedCorsets. Just for the sake of clarity, I ordered this pattern in the heart of the pandemic and Red Threaded has updated their patterns since I did this to let you order multi sized patterns. They have in no way sponsored this video, but if you would lik...

How To Prepare Machine Embroidered Lace from DSA Threads
Very thorough and such an awesome close-up shot!
My 2024 sucked big time. Our landlord "requested" we move last Valentine's Day. At first, we had 60 days to move. But I then discovered that in New York State, if one has been a tenant for more than 2 years, the landlord has to give you, in writing, a 90-day Notice To Vacate before starting eviction. There was a reason why this was happening, but it was not totally our fault. The landlord bore some responsibility as well. At the end of May, we finally got the 90-day notice. In the meantime, I'm looking and looking, but not finding anything that would work for us in our budget. Then, in September, we finally got the eviction and summons to the housing court in October. We had a lawyer from Legal Aid, and he explained that our eviction was not for non-payment of rent. So we explained the situation to him and gave him copies of all the corroborating paperwork I brought with us showing that showed we had brought the situation up to the landlord's management company several times and were blown off. So our lawyer talked with the landlord's lawyer, and we came to a settlement. We would have to the end of the year to move out, and we did not need to pay any more rent so we could save money for a new place. We found that in early Dec and we're able to pay the deposit & 1st month's rent right then. We are now all moved in. So the next month or so will be dedicated to organizing the apartment and setting up a workable sewing area for me so I can get back to sewing and, fingers crossed, I can get back to making videos.
At the moment, I'm making a redingote (in fact, two, one with a "teacher" and another on my own). I have to finish a yukata to wear at home and make quite a few alterations. My plans for next year are to make a corset a dress for my sister's wedding and general everyday clothes.
Those sound like some fantastic projects. I have a Redingote on my wish list of things to make this year too
I would like to get a historical shift done at least. House stuff and mending need to take precedence though. I would also like to finish at least one quilt this year.
Definitely prioritize your mending. I was just doing some of that myself. I'm sure your shift will happen this year too. Happy New Year! 🎊
Glad you are both settling in! ❤ Right now I am working on a 1400's Italian dress. And at long last the Venetian dress bodice that has gone on multiple trips is getting the padding stitched. After that it is stepping up my game with accessories and nice things not just camping clothing!
You've been on such a journey with all of those projects. I'm so excited to see your finished bodice
A bit of a step-back and evaluating year planned at the moment. My biggest desire is to make a dent in my ufo pile and stash in general.
I'm working on making a Gotlandic style outfit. More of a peplos than an apron dress, and more like some of the Finnish clothing from the 900's.
That sounds fascinating
@@MaridithSmith This is the costumer that has inspired my project. trollusia.blogspot.com/2019/12/a-gdyby-gotlandia-jeszcze-inaczej.html
Do you have a favorite costume event to attend?
What project would make the biggest impact on your costuming if you finish it this year?
I'm working on an apron dress now for an event, and this video was perfect for showing me how to finish the seams!
I'm glad it was so helpful ☺️
Would sand paper work on the edges to get rid of the paper?
You could try it. Just don't forget to use protective equipment for the dust.
I bet they used a lot of egg and honey to wash their hair.
It's possible. I didn't look into wet shampoo/ cleaning methods
This is a simple and genius method - It may have just rescued me from the predicted trauma of finishing this gown Im committed to doing! And the thinble ring...OMG - I have to fond one of those. Where do they come from?
I'm so glad this was helpful. My thimble ring is from The Treasury on etsy. The shop owner is Irene Davis.
I have seen counteless videos on cartridge pleating - but these videos of yours have saved me - literally. I have to use a fabic that I loathe (the garment is a favour for a freind) and she bought the worst fabric, and i had no idea how to use the fabirc in a stable way to get even pleats - and the method just makes sense, and removes the stress. Its just an academic robe - the back of it - but the rayon silk velevt is messing with my head and this mthod worked so well. Thankyou thankyou!
I am so glad it was helpful! It is very kind of you to help your friend. Sometimes I worry that these first videos from the pandemic are to dated to be helpful so I'm glad it was able to help you!
Thanks for explaining the differences. I do SCA but we don't have ren faires here in Aus.
I'm happy to help. From what I've read, they're a very American thing to attend.
@@MaridithSmith they are, but we do get new people coming along to SCA stuff thinking they are the same thing because of hearing about them in American based tv shows.
@@asilverfoxintasmania9940 I see what you mean.
Plus the turkey legs 🍗🍗🍗

I've only ever been to the Kansas City Ren Faire once. My brother-in-law worked there. My sister was a wandering bard at Fairs in California. She played the zither. I live close to the Sterling Renaissance Festival in Sterling NY, which unfortunately has ended it's season just a few weeks ago. I hope to get there someday, and in costume.
I hope you get yo go again to the faire soon. They can be a lot of fun. Thank you for watching!
Wow. That looks amazing! Great job. ❤
Thank you! It was such a fun project to work on. I'm glad you enjoyed watching 🥰
Thank you SEW much for this overview. I found the information on the godets and how you placed your hooks and eyes extremely helpful. Just a note for anyone else who might be coming here for information: I decided to begin my Elizabethian wardrobe with this type of jacket and found the RH pattern did not work for me either for several reasons. (I am 5"4 and weigh 113 pounds which I think would be considered a smaller size.) There was one other pattern I tried that also did not work, before I also settled on the Tudor Tailor.
I'm so glad this was helpful for you. The RH pattern was definitely frustrating for me when I tried it
Very pretty
Thank you. I have a new appreciation for how hard this is
Hello to the other Lyssa from the original Lyssa! So nice to finally have a face for you. Was a bit confused because I knew I wasn't camping with anyone there. Very nice to see the rest of the event I missed since I didn't try to be everywhere and do everything this time which helped to avoid the usual heat exhaustion collapse.
There is always so much going on it's easy to miss things ;-)
Thanks for doing this. I haven't been to Battlemoor since the before times (pre covid) and I need to go back. I see you found White Wolf and Phoenix. Get weaving!
I plan to. I need to make some trim for my partner's tunic
I had a great time camping together. Thank you for the hospitality and comradery. Nox Venus represent!
Thank you for camping with us! It was great spending time together!
Also we never had a chance to get me on camera lol
I realized that while I was editing. Next time I'll make it a priority <3
I had a mushroom pie and it was amazing!
That sounds amazing too
I have never packed for a Pennsic (right now I'm contemplating Gulf Wars for next year) however a lot of your tips are excellent. But keep your re-enacting gear organized before the event, use your list, and there is far less chance that something important will be forgotten. In CW, I use a wooden ammunition box that is three by three to store boots, sox, ammunition, caps, mess gear, my neckerchiefs, bosun whistle's, gun cleaning apparatus, and sewing kit. It does not house the cleaning rags, those are in another small box. In the house, all garb is kept on the clothing rack, and leather gear whether CW or medieval is in the clothing bag. Boots are in the Medieval Box (I may have to change that in the future) along with my cup, etc.
After each event I clean clothing and put it in clothing bags on my clothes rack. Leather goods like belts and pouches go in the bottom of the bag. This way, when I'm packing I can grab the bag and go. If you have a big collection of garb, and it sounds like some of you have much more than I, I only started with the SCA a couple of years ago, get the long canvas clothing bags, with small windows added, write on a card and put it in the window for exactly what is in the bag. Have designated bags for particular outfits, to make it more convenient.
That's brilliant. I tend to get everything cleaned and put away after an event and do a large batch of repairs and the beginning/end of camping season
Make sure you have your triple A card along if you don't feel comfortable changing tires, or have problems with your vehicle. They are a life saver!
Folks can also check with their insurance provider to find out if roadside assistance is included with their policy before leaving.
I I camp with a big unit, and they bring the tents and so forth, but we all pitch in to put them up, and carry sleeping gear in, and set up the interior of the tents and so forth. In some ways it is a hassle because sometimes we're putting up seven tents, but in some ways it is really good, because the last day we are at an event, usually the Sunday, we'll pack up Sunday morning. All our personal stuff and garb goes to our cars, tents are taken down and so forth. Civil War re-enacting is a little different, because we usually hold a battle the Sunday that starts at 2 and we stay until after the battle, but with everything broken down, after the battle we can leave.
I do Civil War Re-enacting and there my unit brings a complete medbox, with all kinds of bandages, over the counter meds for every ailment you can think of, a thermometer, and blood pressure cuff. If you have a bunch of people you know your camping with, this can be a really great aid. Just make sure the one who takes on the Med box is going to be there!
doge is adorbs!
Thank you. She is one of the best tent buddies I've ever had.
A lovely look! That headdress is fantastic! Not particularly summery, but I've started a shawl for a girlfriend with a big celebration coming up in the early part of next year.
Thank you and I'm sure your shawl will be epic <3
Thats a lovely color! I will try this soon!
Do it! Good luck

Great hairstyle to keep hair out of the face and also not worry about remaking. I’ve just started trying this and I so want to do it properly, it saves me form pesky pins and clutches and bun sticks. Those require constant Maintenance

I’ve gotten all the way to camp and realized I wasn’t sure if I’d make it back for fuel… I did, but only because I was less than 15mi from a gas station.
Oh wow! I'm glad you made it out! Checking your gas tank is definitely a good tip!
