If you're watching this at the time of release, its women's history month. A time where we should all be focusing on ways we can uplift the women in our lives a little more than usual. Since the demographics on this channel show that the majority of my viewers identify themselves as women, I want to share some information that might help you save funds our favorite hobby... sewing!
The basic idea of the pink tax is that there is an unnecessary additional mark up on items that are geared towards women. Frequently there is little or no distinction between items that are designated as "women's" and "men's" and the biggest difference is that the women's product is pink. For more information on the long term impacts of the pink tax on a women's earrings and career please check out these articles:

How does the pink tax effect sewing? As a community, we are mostly women and people who do market research know it. We love cute things and are frequently taken to the same hand full of craft stores like JoAnn Fabrics. It is hard to run a brick and mortar fabric store in the days of the internet, and I don't want to throw any shade at their fabric selection or their staff. Most craft stores are horribly understaffed to try and make up for other parts of their budget. My concern with this is coupon culture and marketing can mean that women are paying far more for some of these tools than is necessary. In this video I go to my local JoAnn Fabrics, Home Depot, and Harbor Freight Tools to comparison shop the cost of the same, or similar items across different retailers that are targeting women in their marketing vs. those who are not.
Some craft supplies I suggest comparing or picking up at the hardware store after this include:
Cotton Rope
Hammers and mallets
magnetics plates or magnets
Wood Stain
Upholstery tools
Knives and Razor Blades
Screwdrivers
Cleaning Supplies/ Tools
Lighting
Work or disposable Gloves
Where do you shop to save money on sewing tools? Let me know in the comments and thank you for watching.

Put felt pads on the faces of the clamp to save your furniture from the clamp faces marring surfaces.
That is an excellent idea!
Love the soundtrack. Thanks for the video - excellent work!
I'm so glad you liked the video. Thank you for watching
Great video. Thank you for showcasing the difference between various stores and similar merchandise. Did have a giggle in that I knew every shop before you gave any big clues. Harbor Freight is one of my favourite places to shop for tools and general supplies. I've also had a good bit of luck at various thrift stores, and yard sales. Amazing what people will 'throw out' because parents or grandparents have passed on and the houses/garages need cleaned out.
I'm so glad you found it helpful. Thrift stores are an amazing resource too for looking for materials
How are you supporting Women and working against the patriarchy? I'm doing it by trying to get women to take back their own economic power while continuing to enjoy our favorite pass times. #womenshistorymonth #patriachy #pinktax #sewing
@2:46 - the axes! Buy all the axes!
You found the Easter egg.
You always get a better deal at the hardware store, or even better at a garage sale. Those scissor prices were mental.
Thank you so much for watching. I'm glad it was helpful! Never pay full price for their scissors
I've noticeds this just in wally world. I found a package of sponge type paint brushes in the hardware section that were somewherre between $1.50 and $2. I walked 1/2 the length of the store to the "craft/material" section and these same size-less # of them type of painting brush were 3xs as much. I can't remember the exact amount-Somewhere between $4.50 and $5. That's when I began to watch for the different costs that crafters (predominently women) pay for the exact same stuff that across the store were cheaper. I didn't know it was called a "Pink Tax" The disparity is amazing. It's in more that just craft tools.
That is bonkers! I'm glad I was able to help because it happens with so many products! In the description I put some links to more resources on the Pink Tax. Stay savvy out there!
Took me a minutes to realize you meant sewist / seamstress, not a system for waste water removal.
Totally valid! I just updated the title to be more clear. Thank you!
I stole my dad's metal yard stick for sewing, lol
I love it! Metal yard sticks are amazing!
