  • Sometimes you just get so excited to wear a dress for a party, you try to skip corners with the underpinnings. I am guilty of it, and I know many of you are as well. The problem with skipping layers with historical costuming is that they are often essential to creating the correct shape for that time period. It might now seem important, but this petticoat is actually really important for being able to walk around in early Regency dresses without having the dress puddle around your ankles. I might be sensitive to it these days, but it really made it hard to walk around in this dress without causing problems.
This time period has petticoats that are suspended from a bodice or straps because of the high waistlines. Petticoats that rest at the natural waist as in earlier centuries and later periods will not produce the same effect and often cause a strange line and fullness at the hips which was not fashionable during this period.
This petticoat is made from a thrifted silk curtain and 1 inch wide twill tape. I didn't want to spend a lot of time measuring it out so please enjoy watching me explain it with proportions to my body. At its most basic, this tutorial is showing you how to turn a tube of fabric into a regency petticoat without doing a ton of math and is a great project for folks beginning their historical costuming journey.
I would like to send out a special shout out to Rob at RMH photography for letting me borrow his photography studio for an hour to film some reveal footage.

Curtains and sheets make the best fabric for historic clothing! Even bedskirts are great for ruffled skirt layers

That is an awesome tip about the bedskirt ruffles! I love shopping the curtains at thrift stores for historical costumes.
