1960 Hamilton Rodney Restoration | Caliber 735
In this video I restore a Hamilton Rodney from 1960. This watch uses an American made caliber 735, which can be a little tricky to service than other manual wind, time only movements of the same vintage. Fortunately I only had to backtrack once to remedy a part I missed during reassembly....

In this video, I service a client's vintage Hamilton Clermont from 1973. The movement is a Hamilton caliber 631 which is based on the A Schild caliber 1920. There are a few things that make this movement unique. It is a high beat movement and beats at 36k bph which is double the frequency than that of most vintage watch movements. This movement hacks, or stops, when setting the time. And while ...

Every so often, a watch comes across my bench that I can't for the life of me identify with 100% certainty. Among the many joys of restoring and collecting vintage watches is not finding primary sources of information but still appreciating a watch in and of itself. I would absolutely like to know what model this is...but then again, having a Mystery Model has its own charm. No matter what it's...

Hi folks, Josh Wolfe with Wolfe Vintage Watches here. In this video, rather than drone on and on about wig wag pinons and setting lever screws with my narration, we're just going to listen to the sounds of servicing a vintage watch. The watch in this video is a 1973 Hamilton Day 'N Date 5007. As it came into my shop, it was in pretty decent shape although it wouldn't hand wind nor run. The crys...

Vintage Hamilton Watch Review - 1928 Cushion Plain
Commenting 4 years later to say THANK YOU for sharing this video! I just found this exact Hamilton at a thrift store and paid an entire $3 (three) for it. The crystal is scratched, the case and bracelet had a fine crust of who-knows-what on it. I removed the bracelet and pitched it, and just ordered a new pink leather strap for it. 🎀 Also ordered some Polywatch to polish the crystal. I feel like I should go get it serviced, considering all the dried gunk on it that took me the better part of 30 mins to remove (mostly). But I'm quivering at the thought of the quote from my local watch repair place haha!
Sorry. I had the sound off. You did lube it.
No oiling of the main spring?
How do you tell year and month from serial number?
I use this website to look up serial numbers: pocketwatchdatabase.com/search/serialnumber/hamilton
Great video. Absolutely mesmerizing. Wish I'd known about you a few years ago when I was trying to get my dad's old Hamilton fixed.
I can finally comment on this video. I must have watched this video 100 times!!! I just completed my first, hobby restoration of what seems to be a 1960 Hamilton T-502 Thin-o-matic with the 663 micro rotor movement rather than the 666. I'm not sure what the differences were, but this video was SOOOOOO helpful! I realized about half way through, like you said, that the micro-rotor movements are probably not the best one to start on, but oh well. My watch was missing the micro-rotor but I was able to source a replacement and also restore its actual automatic wind capabilities. This step by step video, down to every screw, and every drop of oil, not only gave me a ton of confidence to keep pushing ahead, but saved me tons of time and from who knows how much trial and error. Thanks so much for this video. My future ebay searches for project watches might very well ALL begin with... what videos do you have to guide me through it? :) Wonderful job showcasing what you do so well. And also, thanks for being entertaining as well. You made it easy to watch this as many times as I did.
I love it! So great to hear you tackled a tricky little movement right out of the gate. Everything else will be a breeze by comparison. I really appreciate the kind words; I'm so please that I was able to help get you started on your path.
Your knowledge, skill, dexterity and natural teaching ability are very impressive! I learned a lot, thank you!
Thank YOU for watching and for the kind words.
I have been watching your videos and am becoming interested in Hamilton tank watches. I want to buy a "Junker" watch off of eBay and try my hand at repairing it myself. Looking at 770 movement but how would I go about matching a movement from one seller and a case form another? Are there common dimensions? Any advice would be appreciated.
Awesome, you'll have a blast restoring these beauties. The 770 has the same dimensions as the 753 and 754 movements (they have different shock protections). So you'll have to find a model that uses one of those three calibers to be able to drop in the 770. That said, you're much better off finding a complete project watch and keeping the movement and case together. You could then pick up a donor movement if you need to scavenge parts.
Never saw a terrible repair like that. You destroy this wonderful dial. I have no words. Is this a comedy ?
Great Video !!!!!
Very nice video. I wished you showed how the watch did on the timing machine after you serviced it. New subscriber, and hoping to purchase a Hamilton from you some day.
Great review. Thanks for the detailed information on these Thin-o-Matics. I just got my first vintage... what I believe is a T-502 with the silver "linen" textured dial and a 663 movement. It runs ok, but is missing that micro rotor and certainly needs some service. As I prepare to dig in to some "light" hobby work on cleaning and servicing, your videos will be a huge help. Thanks!
I am working on a 982 movement. It runs for a few minutes then stops. I cant figure out what is causing this. I checked the jewels and they are fine. Are there any peculiar things to look out for when reassembling this type of movement?
Oh man, there are a ton of reasons you're seeing the movement run intermittently, but I'd start with the escapement and work my way backwards. Double check and clean the jewels again. Clean the balance spring. Check the condition of the pivots. Is there gunk in any of the gears? Is the barrel cap seated properly? There are just some many causes that I'm afraid the best advice I could give is to clean all the parts again and pay special attention to the condition of each.
We’ll explained and great video. Thanks
I have a Hamilton Grover that needs a good cleaning and a new crystal. I wonder why Hamilton never added shock protection to these watches?
Hamilton did have shock protection on some of their movements, but it was the Swiss that really took it to the next level. Let me know if you'd like for me to take a look at your Grover.
I really enjoy all your videos. Keep them coming. Thank you
What auto-oiler did you use? Bergeon 2718-1A?
Yes. For the end stones, I use the 2718-1A and for the open jewel pivots, I use the 7720-5. The full set is: www.esslinger.com/bergeon-7721-automatic-watch-and-clock-oiler-set/
It’s too bad you don’t have this for sale. It’s my grandmothers birth year and she would be amazed to see it.
Cheers from your newest subscriber from California! I love the tank style watches , they’ve always looked great in the old movies to me.
Awesome job.
Excellent restoration. Sir, can you tell me which brand of hand polishing tool you have used and what is the approximate cost of this tool? Thank you
Thanks for the kind words. I use a Dremel 8220. You can find one here: amzn.to/4a3Ad1k. Hope that helps!
Rodney is such a great piece! I have one in NOS condition and its one of my favorite pieces made by Hamilton, love your vids so much!
Awesome! The Rodney was popular during its production and has remained so for 60+ years because it's such a hansom watch. Thanks for the kind words!
@@WolfeVintageWatches I just wore it yesterday and my clumsy ass just got a deep scratch in the crystal, case and all is still good but where did you find the crystal? I can't find one for it!
@@ASWCo09 If you can't sand and polish the scratch out, Esslinger has the crystal you need. I can't remember the exact size, but www.esslinger.com/gs-watch-crystal-phd-hi-dome/ or www.esslinger.com/gs-watch-crystal-pk-lo-dome/ will do the trick.
Great to see you back Josh! Always enjoyed your videos!
Thank you, I'm glad to be back!
Was there any significance to the name ‘Rodney’?
I don't think so, at least not that I can find. Although Hamilton did stay away from the more common male names for the men's models like Steve, Dave, George, etc.
Love all things vintage, especially watches. Nice job.
Thanks so much!
Superb video.. as always! Really informative and told with humour too. Thank you for taking the time to produce these. If you did fancy including your cleaning process with ultrasonic I’m sure that would go down well as well.
Great suggestion!
I have to ask -- why would you add lume to the six o'clock position on the dial and wipe out the "T Swiss T" marking?
Beautiful movement
Hey, that’s my watch! No, really, that is my actual watch. Thanks for posting this video Josh! You are a true artisan and it is great to see all of the details and hard work that go into your preservations. Your service/ repair is still going strong. This is one of the most accurate automatics I own!
Thanks for the kind words and I’m so glad to know your watch is getting its well deserved wrist time!
I truly hate trying to remove and insert crystals with thise tools!
Welcome back! Glad to see you posting again!
Great video! A little tip, @ 8:10 when you are swinging the "brace" out of the way. A screwdriver tip fits perfectly in the slot there and makes the twisting of the brace out of the way more controlled and simpler.
Thanks for the video. Did you grease the main spring barrel?
I did, well, I greased the mainspring itself using a bit of tissue paper before rewinding it.
i love watches
I agree, I hate those damned click springs. I finally sourced some and bought 12. I've had those little buggers literally just disappear off the movement. They're so small I don't even bother trying to find them. The other spring I really hate is the date jumper spring on the date models of the same movement. This movement is obviously at least based if not entirely made by ETA. Like moskaahrmarhcr6833 noted. Nice job on the video by the way. Good lighting, great macro shots, overall much better quality than previous videos. All of those things and depth of field are things I struggle with filming videos for my channel so I appreciate the effort you put into your vids. Enjoyed the "Dad jokes" about the "totally legal white powder" and "mobile stud carrier". Looking forward to the next video. Oh, by the way, it's "CANNON" pinion not "CANYON" pinion ;-). Cheers!
I totally mispronounced canon pinion on purpose to see who was paying attention closely.
Kinda interesting movement. It reminds me 2824 and 2892 both.
Indeed. This is the great uncle to those movements.
What is the use is it value in now days iam also watch mechanic I have some old watches anyone can not buy 😢
Lovely work.
I HAVE A 1937 BROCK WHICH I WEAR FAIRLY OFTEN AND HAVE SINCE 1988
THE 980 & 982M ARE FINE MOVEMENTS......THE PLATFORM WAS A MAINSTAY OF HAMILTON FOR MANY YEARS FROM 1936 - 1953 .
Great restoration but your beat error is still too high
Clever movement. Good restoration
Great restoration. Nice timepiece
I've seen some of your videos and I like the narration and technical explanation. The only thing missing is a microscope shots. Other than that, great stuff
Great restoration!!!
My grandfather (an English coal miner) left his only possession, a Hamilton like this, to my father. It was a gift from my grandmother, who died in ‘56. It didn’t run, so my dad threw it out. I’m still ticked about it, 35 yrs later. Interesting to see how easy it is to service.
The 747 is the basis for the 730, which is is my favorite watch movement. So simple and elegant. I've bought and repaired several watches from ebay which use the 730 movement.
Great restoration. I have a Vintage Elgin in need of repair, can you help?
Nice to have you back! best regards from Denmark
Oh you are back! Nice to see your work again! Thanks to you I have already fixed, rejuvenated and reanimated about 30 watches😅. All Hamilton ranging drom T-500's a few 5000's and some with day&date fuctions. Fun stuff!
