From Oily Mess, to High Beat Perfection - Restoration of a 1973 Hamilton Dorchester Vintage Watch
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 окт 2020
- In this video, I service and restore a vintage Hamilton Dorchester from 1973. The movement is a Swiss made automatic Hamilton caliber 625 with 17 jewels. As can be deduced from the dial, it is supposed to beat at 36,000 BPH. However, when it first hit my bench it was fluttering away at more than 43,000 BPH and the timing was too fast to even register on the Timegrapher. Demagnetizing the movement didn't help bring the beat rate down to earth, so that must mean something else was fouling the hairspring....right? This wasn't the only issue waiting for me as I dug into the service in October 2020.

Thank you so much for adding your explanations throughout the video. I can't tell you how much more informative and helpful it is to guys like myself who want to get into this. You're my new favorite watchmaker channel, hands down!
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant video! The combo of macro photography with your explanation & demonstration of how the individual mechanisms work (such as how each set of springs & gears interact to operate the date/day wheels, and how the clutch & set spring work) is gold for engin-nerds like myself, as I enjoy understanding the physics as much as the watchmaker's craft itself. High beat perfection indeed! 👌
Wow, thank you very much for the kind words. I really appreciate it.
Hamilton has some decent timepieces. Nice restoration
That they do!
Subscribed. The precisions, patience and humor is a killer combo - in awe of your watch knowledge and skill. As a collector of vintage pieces I tip my hat to you sir.
A+ video for disassebly/reassembly. Perfect info for commentary and nice watch. Always love a Hamilton.
Thanks for making this video.
Very nice watch, and Great job servicing it
Another excellent video! Man if I only had your skills!
I appreciate that!
Gorgeous Hamilton!
Excellent narration
Oh, thank you!
Amazing video and a dream of a watch. Thanks a lot for sharing!
Pretty good
Really enjoy these videos -- and another watch brought back to its peak.
That watch is GORGEOUS!
Hey, thanks Bandrew! She's a looker, that's for darn sure.
Nice job
Thanks!
Gosh, you make it look so easy! Thank you!!
You're certainly welcome. Thank YOU for the kind words.
Hamilton AKA The Hammer I have this watch but in gold version I love it it's so different in Hamilton brand
Nice work. You sound very young to me and if you are I have to say it is great that you are working to help keep these skills alive.
Why, thank you! If only I were as young as my voice (evidently) sounds....
Great job & well described {a tad quick mind} but still well narrated & what a lovely movement ,i'm intrigued as to it's price in its day.
Thanks Ted! Yeah, I try to condense a few hours worth of footage to something as close to half an hour as possible and sometimes have to hustle with the narration.
Looking at the vintage catalogs, the Dorchester was listed for $140 in 1973, which is $820 in 2020 dollars.
great video
I'm glad you liked it, thank you!
Seus vídeos são simplesmente top excelente e muito bom mesmo
New subscriber. You make great videos.
Awesome, thanks Jerry! I appreciate the compliment. That means a lot.
You are a good watch maker. What happened. I have not seen any new vids. I mess with Hamiltonos as well.
Could you do a disassembly of a Citizen Satellite Wave GPS watch with the f150 movement?
I know it’s not mechanical but would be interesting to watch.
Sorry Cary - I thought I had replied last week but it looks like it didn't take.
I probably won't disassemble a Citizen wave. At least not for another 30 years until it becomes vintage!
To hold you over until then, check this vid out: ruclips.net/video/-gZ8rmEB0ig/видео.html
It's not GPS, but I would imagine the module and cases are similar.
Amazing video! What kind of magnifier loupe do you recommend to service watch movements or which one do you use?
Thank you!
Thank you! I use a 5x Bausch and Lomb loupe for the vast majority of work: www.esslinger.com/bausch-lomb-single-lens-plastic-jewelry-loupe-select-magnification/
Every once in a while, I'll need to use a 10x for inspections or delicate work, but that's the exception.
Great vid teach grandmaster.lol
I like your videos better than mine:)
Another excellent video, and really enjoyed the humour you bring to it. I'm just starting my watch making/repair journey as a hobbyist. Could you tell me what cleaning solution(s)/process you use? Many thanks
Awesome, thank you!
For cleaning, I use www.esslinger.com/zenith-hi-tech-watch-and-clock-cleaner-solution-1-gallon/. For rinse, I use www.esslinger.com/zenith-hi-solv-watch-and-clock-rinse-solution-1-gallon/.
After putting the parts in cleaning baskets, I bring the cleaning solvent to 50C in a heated ultrasonic machine and run it for 10 minutes. Then I do two rounds with the rinse in the same way; heated to 50C and run for 10 minutes each. The first rinse is to remove and deactivate a majority of the cleaning solvent. The second round of rinse is with new, clean solution as a final polish to make sure everything is as clean and shiny as possible.
Good luck on your journey, but be careful....it's addicting!
@@WolfeVintageWatches Many thanks. I'm already addicted :)
👍👍👍
nice channel
i like it
and you!
Thank you very much!
Hello, what do you use for breaking grease and for lubricating the barrel arbor (if you don't mind sharing)?
Excellent questions. I use Novostar braking grease: www.cousinsuk.com/product/novostar-barrel-grease. I've also heard great things about www.esslinger.com/kluber-chronogrease-p125-5-grams/, but the price kept me away from that grease for the time being. That said, 5g of the Kluber will last more than a lifetime.
For the barrel arbor, I use D5: www.esslinger.com/moebius-d-5-microgliss-watch-and-clock-oil-grease/. Mobius 9104 is a great alternative as well: www.esslinger.com/moebius-9104-synt-hp-1300-synthetic-watch-oil-2ml/.
As an aside, I dig your channel! Great videos and very well presented.
@@WolfeVintageWatches Thank you so much for the compliment! I am very new to watch servicing as a hobbyist and there are so many opinions about breaking grease, haha! I have only full serviced a manual wind so I didn't have to use it yet. I think I will try the novostar to start. I already have D5. Thanks for the options and the links and I look forward to watching more of your channel!
@@JustWatches1 Ha! Yeah, lubrication technique and philosophy seems to be a pretty passionate topic among watch repairers. I think it's because its one of the few areas where there is real choice. It's not like there are 100 different ways to screw in a screw or put a keyless works back together.
TOP
Great video & great skills ! I have one specific question : which mainspring winder do you use? Thanks a lot :)
Thank you very much! I use a vintage set of Watch-Craft mainspring winders. The set I have has 7 sizes. I picked it up years ago on eBay and found a couple of listings of similar sets to show you what I use.
The set on the first link is an auction so will be sold in the next few days. It looks like it is in pretty decent shape if you're looking to pick it up. The second link is a sale listing for just thee winders. I like to have the complete set so I know I'll have the correct size, but this listing will give you an idea of the price that the full set will likely sell for when the auction is over.

@@WolfeVintageWatches Thank you so much for sharing ! I'm also in the process of orienting my career towards watch servicing, after a first career in engineering & management... The road ahead is long, but thrilling ! Hope we'll be able to exchange some more in the future. In the meantime, I got my eyes on the first set ;) Cheers, Vincent
Awesome Vincent, I'm always happy to share what I can with a fellow sufferer of the watch repair disease! Enjoy the ride!
I've got a strong suspicion that you've done this before !
Once or twice…
Are you certain the watch was originally fitted with an acrylic crystal?
I bought one yesterday with a mineral crystal and I have found one or two others on the internet that likewise had glass crystals.
Thank you.
Good question. Mineral glass with a plastic gasket was absolutely used for this watch. It's hard to tell from the catalog how it was marketed, but I've certainly seen both mineral and acrylic on NOS watches. My comment about the acrylic crystal on this particular example was about the specific type of acrylic crystal - it was not a water tight crystal and did not fit the case.
@@WolfeVintageWatches, I have already dispatched the watch to my watchmaker and he’s confident he can replace the original mineral crystal with a modern equivalent.
Normally I hate both tonneau-shaped cases and combined day/date apertures, but this is so funky (ugly?) that I really like it.
Ironically I’ll probably pay more for the crystal replacement than I did for the watch itself . . .
I could tell that watch was running way too fast before you put it on the timegrapher. If its so off that you can see it with your eyes then you definitely have an issue. I learned recently that watchmaking is not for me but I am always impressed to see it done.
Yeah, this guy was beating about 30% faster than it should. And for a movement that is SUPPOSED to beat at 36k bph, 30% faster is insane.
additionally, do you sell these pieces? I am interested in the Dorchester.
Thanks PJ! You can always check price and availability on www.wolfevintagewatches.com.
Can you service a hamilton of the same years (1960s to 1970s) for me??
You could even use it for your videos.
I just subscribed.
Very good work👍👍
Sure thing. Visit www.wolfevintagewatches.com and shoot me an email with a couple of pictures and a description of how the watch is running and I'll be able to give you an accurate quote.
whats the purpose of the gems?
The jewels? They are to reduce friction on the pivots.
How much price lm from pakistan
You can always check current price and availability on www.wolfevintagewatches.com.
However, this particular watch has been sold.
who on earth serviced this last? wow
The previous watch service was performed at Jiffy Lube and sponsored by Pennzoil.
Dude, your voice sounds familiar. Are you the guy that does "What Are We Eating?"
No, but I have asked myself, “what did I just eat” more than I’d care to admit.
You are good but the stem was rusty and the gasket ring was not clean. Why?????
