Big Fish, Big Fish!
After a pod of feeding Dolphins blew up my fishing spot I decided to fish a different area and ended up catching a personal best Snook. I refer to it as a 'monster' in the video. That that may seem like an exaggeration as much bigger Snook are caught in other parts of Florida. However in NE Florida we don't get many Snook, especially this size. Caught on a paddletail using a Medium Power Bull Bay Stealth Sniper Rod paired with a Daiwa BGMQ 3000, I0lb Braid, 20 lb Mono leader tipped with additional 30lb Mono leader.

Inshore Fishing - Shrimp Lure Challenge
Просмотров 5974 месяца назад
Another day on the water inshore kayak fishing, but I decided to experiment by rigging three rods with three different artificial shrimp lures to see which lure the fish preferred. I tied on a Vudu Shrimp, a ZmanEZshrimp and a Salt Strong Power Prawn Jr. I ended up catching fish on each lure but on this day the Power Prawn Jr. won the shrimp lure challenge.

With so much live bait in the water it was challenging to catch fish the day before. So today I came out with a weedless underspin jig head to throw in the grass and above the oyster beds. My fishing buddy was not using an underspin lure. And although we both caught a few fish on a traditional jig head, I caught almost twice as many fish so I have to give some credit to the underspin jig head f...

    I’ll have to try the Power Prawn Jr.! Got a question. I recently sold my very well used Malibu Stealth 12 and purchased a Hobie Mirage Lynx. I watched one of your videos about protecting the Lynx bottom. Do you still have the body side molding on your Lynx? If so, how’s it holding up? BTW, I really enjoy your videos. Well done and always some good info!

    • @FishingwiththeOz
      @FishingwiththeOz Месяц назад

      Congrats on the new Lynx. The body side molding has not come off and remains securetly attached. I even added some more additional small strips of molding to the rear of the kayak. One of my buddies used molding on the front of his kayak as a keel guard which has worked very well. One subscriber informed me that some of his body side molding was coming off and I can only guess that he did not prep the kayak properly. Surface must be first washed clean using some dawn dish soap and water. After completely dry I suggest a small amount of 70% Isopropyl alcohol applied with a clean rag over the areas where the molding will be placed. That dries quickly and the final step is to use an adhesive promoter. As I lay the molding down in sections I would use some pressure with my hands to hold the molding down for a few minutes. It can help to have a second person helping you. When all the molding is down the kayak must sit for at least 24 hours before taking it in the water. The adhesive promoter I purchased was expensive but it worked perfectly for me. I did two videos on underside molding and leaving a link to the second one in case you didnt see that one - also some details in the video description with links to the molding and adhesive promotoer ruclips.net/video/kp5bP4ZU6fs/видео.htmlsi=-vWvkNbThh6EYPC6

    Wondering … does this motor have a Killswitch on it someplace ?

    • @FishingwiththeOz
      @FishingwiththeOz Месяц назад

      No kill switch. When they first came out they had kill switches but they did away with them right about the time I purchased mine. I think a kill switch would provide a bit more safety, in case somone falls out of the kayak and the kayak remains upright. Typically if a kayaker falls out they have also flipped the kayak over. Whether the motor is mounted on the rudder or in the transducer cavity (like mine is), once the kayak is flipped, the motor will no longer be in the water so the kayak isn't going anywhere.

    • @electricfatbiker9717

      @@electricfatbiker9717 thanks for the kind words. The motor unit has been great for me. I have a generation 1 unit and the new gen 2 and gen 3 systems are advertised to be a little faster with some longer run times. I like that the company continues to improve their product. They also have provided good customer support, which they do via their email system, hard to get someone on the phone. I purchased the motor not quite two years ago and what I have found is that it is not good around a lot of weeds and grass (no motor really is). There is one location I fish with a lot of grass so I use the motor less and pedal more there. I have had to send the motor in for repair twice. The first time it threw a bearing and they fixed it under warranty. More recently I had an issue with it that required some new parts. I paid $125 in total for the repair, which I thought was quite reasonable, cheap really if you compare it to having to repair an outboard motor on a boat. And they did the repairs and sent the motor back to me quickly. So $125 in repair costs after approximately 80 outings on the water, starting and stopping the motor several times, I am OK with that. Good luck and tight lines.

    Hey Oz, question. Maybe I didn't see it but is there any kind of safety on this motor that will kill it in case you go over the side? I watched many of your vids before purchasing my own. I'm interested in the motor for sure. I emailed the company a few days ago to ask a question and I've had no response. That kind of bothers me as a prospective customer that they have not even communicated back with me.

      They do not come with kill switches. I was concerned about that as well when I first purchased but I got over it pretty quickly. I am still happy with my Gen 1 unit but the newer units have a few more features: longer battery life, more thrust and an option to put the motor on the rudder of any kayak, including the Lynx. As far as customer service, I had an issue once that they took care of pretty quickly and at no cost to me. And for the back camera I used some PVC with one end going into a rod holder on my kayak crate and the the other end has another telescoping pole wedged into it. A quick question for you. Do you think a fish finder is worthwhile for fishing in the local waters here? I was thinking of the Garmin Striker Vivid 4cv Fishfinder with GT20 Transducer.

    • @FishingwiththeOz
      @FishingwiththeOz 5 месяцев назад

      I use a basic fish finder to see depth, bottom contour and surface temperature. I will also see smaller bait fish but since I am usually in very shallow water I wont see big fish. The Garmin 4cv should be fine but you will probably need to purchase a seperate mount to attach it to your gear tracks and a battery (I recommend a Noccqua pro power 10amp battery kit). I use a 5 inch finder just to have a larger screen that I can see easier. You may want to consult with the kayak guys at Hagan Coastal Outfitters in Mandarin as to how best to rig the Garmin on your kayak. If you dont want to drill holes in your kayak you can use a side arm mount like the YakAttak Switchblade.

After the first year I had to replace the nylon cord that raises and lowers the rudder, and then last summer a cable broke in my steering handle and the replacement for that is the entire steering and rudder component. And recently I needed to replace the spine on the mirage drive which was starting to fail. Fortunately with Hobie's 3 year warranty along with the help of my local dealer, all parts were replaced at no cost to me. I just had to wait a couple weeks for parts to come in. Owning a Hobie kayak is going to cost you more in the long run but for me it is worth it. The Lynx is a very stable and comfortable fishing platform. If you want a good all round fishing kayak that is durable and low maintenance I would sugget the Old Town line of kayaks. I used to have an Old Town 106 pdl and really enjoyed it, but it was just a bit too heavy for me to easily manage. Plus I fish a lot in very shallow and oyster fillled waters and the Hobie Mirage Drive is better for that. In the Hobie I can lift the fins of the drive in the upward position and flutter kick through shallow water whereas in the Old Town I used to have to lift the drive up and paddle through shallow water. Hope this info helps and wishing you tight lines.

    After a year some of the side molding has started to come off the bottom. Do you have any suggestions for product to re-adhere? Probably just put some new molding would be best but I'm out. Thanks

      Sorry to hear that. I have not had that issue. I am curious, did you use adhesive promoter when you first installed the rubber molding? I don't think the adhesive promoter would work now as it is intended to use with freshly peeled 3M type sticky tape. If it were me I would probably try using a marine glue like Goop Marine Glue Adhesive Clear. Another option is "Clear" Waterproof Silicone like Gorilla Waterproof Caulk and Seal. I don't know which of these two options would work best but that is where I would start. I would try to put pressure on the glued areas and let them cure for at least 48 hours. Hope you can work it out.

      I used the adhesive promoter but I think after a particularly tricky launch that necessitated a lot of dragging some it came loose. Anyways, I ended up using a bit of marine goop to seal it back on. No prob. Tight lights

      @@jonathangiannetti5110 I hope it stays on. If it comes off again you can try using a 3m brand adhesive marine glue. They have a glue that is semi permanent called 3m 4200 and they have a permanent glue called 3m 5200 that would create the strongest bond to the kayak.

    How does it do in weed or grass?

      I have a gen 1 motor and battery. Weeds or grass will clog the prop and shut the motor down. Using a weed guard helps but does not prevent a clog and shut down. The weed guard also reduces max speed a bit as well. I have a weed guard and cut out a few of the plastic wires to to compenstate for that. My motor has gotten clogged on two occasions fishing a very grassy shallow area. Since I have the motor in my transducer cavity I had to wait until I was off the water to unclog the prop and then it was good to go again. I still had the mirage drive to pedal with so it wasn't that big of a deal. I hear the newer generation 2 model has better weed removal capability- a cleaning mode - but I do not have first hand experience with it. I spoke to a Hobie dealer in Florida that told me he mounted a universal texas power paddle motor on the rudder of a hobie lynx and that it works just fine while providing easier access to the motor. I think he posted a photo of that set up somewhere on the Hobie Lynx Facebook Group. I am very happy with the motor and the service that TPP has provided. I did have to send it in once when a bearing failed but they took care of it under warranty, also paid the shipping, and I had the motor back a week later. I love having the ability to use the motor, or the pedal drive or both at the same time and am very happy with my purchase. The motor comes in handy when I am going against wind and current and I use it a lot like a boater might use a trolling motor on a boat - using very low throttle to help me hold position or move forward slowly. There is now a generation 3 set up with a more powerful battery that provides greater thrust and speed and battery life (although I have yet to run out of battery). That tells me that the company wants to continue to improve on their product and become a long term player in the kayak motor space. I am a fan.

      @@FishingwiththeOz thanks I might consider the Rutter motor I will call them in the morning and see what they have to say. I mainly want to use it for heading into the wind as well. Corpus is very windy. I don’t fish I just do photography
