I use the aluminum roasting pans you buy at the grocery store. I poke holes in the top one and put gravel in the bottom one so that the water is not standing on the roots, but is still available for the plants. They are going to be a lot deeper than you may want, but they are durable and they are not plastic.
really good and smart stage presence. stop, pick your nose, pause to allow it to be cut, then start over. on the other hand, opsie.. forgot to cut that out. get a TUMBS UP for the good stage presence.
I've been sprouting broccoli, radish and legumes for years. But your videos are getting me really interested in starting a serious setup at home. Thanks for the videos! Also love that Oblivion sentence reset! ;D
Nice concise video. Those flats are great! I've also found a good alternative to soil is hemp fibre mats from terrafibre. Perhaps slightly more expensive but completely eliminates soil mess and water retention is fantastic. Also another great organic bulk seed supplier is mumms in BC, free shipping on orders over $25 in Canada and $50 USA.
I've tried the Terrafibre mats, in fact I was supposed to do a video with them but I simply couldn't make them work to the level I wanted, so I cancelled the video. But I'm glad they worked for you!
Wow I love the advice on cutting and not washing. That makes perfect sense and I have not heard that from any other of the top micro green video producers. This was a great video
Your video is super with vital basic information. Kudos. I always look at these videos and wondered why a shallow tray was not used to make harvesting easier . You gave the answer. Easier to harvest and most economical. Carry on bro.
So Im impressed with your explanation soil method that you are using. You said its important to sift the soil so that you have fine grains. Others said use Organik because it has the nutrients and its more organic with means you can produce a great crop according to them. So its their a compromise? Have you tried the more expensive soil and saw no difference in production?
I tend to up-cycle any pastry plastic-containers, which has a lid and has a big enough space to hold seedlings. They usually hold cookies, or similar goods.
Great video! I am starting a micro greens business. I have a question about the germination of the seeds. Some videos show putting another tray on the seeds with a paver. Why do you just cover with an empty tray? Thank you for all your help, Darlene
I have red spring wheat grass in a (1 inch tray 1020) . There aren’t any holes in the bottom of this tray the grass stopped at about 2 inches . I have one T5 light 12 inches above it . Grass looks like it isn’t flourishing. Where did I mess up ? Also had a fan circulation. I have been watering from a spray bottle and also added water on top in the corners
Thank you so much!!! this video really made me wanna do microgreens now LOL. Question: what are you supposed to do with them afterward? juice them? eat them plain?
I used to grow all kinds of greens in simple trays from a restaurant supply store. It eliminated this problem before I ever knew it was one. But it doesn’t work so well for bottom watering. Soooo, there’s that.
Wow, thank you for all this info! I feel like I can do this now. One question: what do you set the tray on? I know you said a flat surface, but how do you avoid getting drainage water or soil on your surface?
What would you suggest as some must have tools for a new garden in a new home? Start with beds and start small? or would you go whole hod and till a proper bed?
Do you use the indoor green house that was behind you and should I have one for micrgreens also would peatmoss with Vermiculite impolite be a good source
What's an easy seed to find? Like I can't order special seeds online because they won't deliver to my country. What's something I can find readily in a grocery store (for example, chia, flax, sunflower seeds). Thanks for the lovely video :)
Thanks for the video! Just subscribed. I've got a question if you get a sec: Do you think Coconut coir with a later addition of light comfrey tea would be enough nutrients to get lettuce to a plump second set of leaves?
Hey Kevin I have a dumb question for ya? Could you keep reusing the same soil as long as it’s disease free? I know you mentioned the seeds are producing all of the nutrients. I’ve never grown micro greens and I’d love to get into it.
My peas are doing great! I use the same grow bags every year and loosen soil a little by squishing bags. I put on top of the soil tea from used tea bags (awesome!) , one dose of chopped seaweed (superb!) from beach and my own urine (yes i do piss in bottles). I have put some cheap fertilizer balls on too from a £$ shop
Nice comment on the soil. I have the same type of 1 inch grow trays and though, why am I putting in so much soil if these can grow on toilet tissue? Testing coco coir mats right now. But there must be something even cheaper, some waste material say like coffee grinds or wood dust. If they don't need nutrition, there has to be a free substrate out there?
@@epicgardening Cheers, have you heard of City Hydro who do everything on coco coir mats. No dirt, no mess and can deliver to kitchens and restaurants without having to harvest, giving them a live plant. As the coco coir is allowed into kitchens, whereas soil is not. That is the main reason I'm toying with it.
What's the financial overhead of 2-3 microgreen crops? And the expected net profit afterwards?...thanks for your insight bro, if you're accepting volunteers in Miami FL let me know !!!
Super expensive seeds I stay away from, but other than that most anything can be grown as microgreens! I also stay away from hard to germinate seeds, like carrots for example.

@Kevin , can we just buy a huge bag of 'birdseed' sunflower seed from the hardware store? If it's not salted, would you likely get similar outcomes for microgreen sunflower shoots?
I am no authority, but I have heard on Donnie Green’s channel that sunflower seeds are hard to get right. The cheap ones tend to have the hulls hang on so tightly that the micro greens are damaged getting them off. Most of the successful microgreens growers I have followed order the large black oil sunflower seeds from Italy.
My mom and I have been trying different ways of growing microgreens (in the jar, with kits, etc.) But always seem to end up with mold! How do I keep my microgreens from getting moldy?! Please help!! 🌎💚🙏
Definitely store them in the coolest, dryest, darkest place possible. The fridge is tricky because you open it all of the time, and condensation can start germination process artificially
I just bought my supplies to start growing microgreens. I got coco coir and perlite at home depot, and I also have that cheap top soil stuff which has sticks and what not. If I screened the top soil, would that be good to mix in with my coco coir and perlite? Also, what ratio should I use? I'm new to all of this and haven't really seen much online regarding ratios. Thanks!
Yayyy! Congrats, very excited for you. If you need any help, feel free to reach out and/or watch my videos! 🌱💚 I prefer a growing medium called ProMix MP Organik
Yes, but also you're not growing in an environment that would even make a non-food-safe plastic, non-food safe if that makes sense. Heat / lots of UV is the issue, neither of which would be present in enough quantities for a microgreens grow

It seems it would make it more difficult to cut if you use his cutting method.
