    hey i tested something and got nice results: when u grow sunflowers like u grow ur popcorn greens (aka no light at all) they sorta maintain more of their nutty/sweet sunflowerseed taste when they reach day 7/8/9 - they also buildup less tanins it seems (that stuff that sticks to ur teeth/tongue and is unpleasant) 😊

    Well due to medical issues I have not grown any sunflower sprouts in so long, like during the entire pandemic so far. I miss them!! After finding out I have a complete heart block and having to get emergency surgery for a pacemaker then not being able to hold any food down finally on March 4th 2021 they had to put a balloon in and open up my stomach. It was closed at the bottom of my esophagus only allowing what is equal to a leaky faucet or a drip to go through I can finally eat food!! And boy have I eaten lots of it in a week, but I really wanted my sunflower sprouts back!! I had to watch this video again to make sure I didn't forget anything and tomorrow I will be seeding my trays! I can't wait!! Thank you for making it easy for people like me, no green thumb!

    Awesome Video, very well constructed, and very informational. Only three things I do differently. 1)I only spray the Food Grade Hydrogen peroxide on Day 1, thats it.. 2) I don't use Fans, because if a batch does catch mold I find it spreads the mold spores to the other Trays. 3 I never Spray from the top after the germination process, because I find that when you do from the top and not the bottom, it promotes mold. This is only my methods. If it works for you, Awesome.

    Good video. You say washing shortens shelf life and I’ve heard people say this but is not true. Soaking and washing the crop increases turgid pressure in the cells keeping the the plants from going limp. The biggest complaint from customers is that the stems go limp but after Washing the shelf life is at least 3-4 days longer than no wash. The only thing is that after washing, the crop needs to be spun in a salad spinner then placed on a frying device of some sort. I use a hanging mesh drying “rack”used to dry cannabis with a gentle fan blowing. In a few minutes the crop is dry enough to pack. This gives optimal shelf life. Try it

    I've been growing a variety of microgreens for a while now but it's just for immediate family or we barter with friends for some real eggs. LOL! I haven't grown my black oil sunflower seeds this way and I find it interesting. They really shot up over those last 48 hours. I don't think I caught why you use the brick in the video. I assume this is to keep the seed in direct contact with the moist growing medium and to help them take root. I push my seeds down into growing medium and the spray them. I black them out and check on them daily since it doesn't take much time. I water the same as you. The food grade hydrogen peroxide (use the same as you) is a must even if one is growing in sterile medium. I use coir. I also use the same lights, but I have 4 bulbs 4' 6500k bulb per tray. I mix them all together and make smoothies or used in salads. Sunflower, peas, and wheatgrass are my favorites. I've grown many but I'm having issues with the oregano. Thanks for the video.

    Thank you for another great video. With regard to the trays, is the middle green tray a different grade or material? I've read comments from others, not here, about chemicals from trays leaching into the product. Thanks again for the time you take to share your knowledge with us!

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад

      Thank you so much for the support! It is the same material which is a PP (Polypropylene plastic). PP is generally a pretty safe option and doesn't leech like a PVC or something would. Technically most leeching occurs when plastics are subjected to high heat or high UV radiation. We don't really let them get either in this space because our lights don't put off a lot of UV and the temperature is controlled. Growing outdoors would be slightly more concerning though and I wish that there were more non-plastic growing options for that. Hope that helps!

    I'll let you know how it goes. I snagged the portable cordless LED black light on amazon ($20 discounted 85% to $3), and this seems like a practical use.

    Very informative video! You guys are very thorough in your delivery. We've been researching microgreens for over a year now, and this virus has given me the inspiration to just get started. Our first round of sunnys turned moldy in 2 days. I think it was due to over soaking, over watering, and maybe too many seeds sown.. thanks much for the example.

      Thank you so much for the support! You are correct that we pH soak (5.5pH) then water with the 8.0pH filtered water. We were having trouble with soaking in our regular 8.0pH water, so we tried dropping it to the nutrient pH levels and we found that we got slightly better germination... so we stuck with it!

    Though it takes longer to harvest, I weigh sunflower microgreens as I'm putting in containers between 1 and 3 ounces for sales. During that process, I only grab enough product to check my weight tray for seed hulls, should there be any lingering, and boast a near-perfect record of no hulls to my customers! I was curious if you've developed a similar method or do you educate your customers, friends, and family about the possibility of the hulls and that they could pick them off? I know they're edible too (sunflower seeds are often eaten with the shell on!) but I prefer my micros without hulls. Love your content and thank you for your AWESOME presentations!!

    Another great video guys! I love that you did a full walk-thru to show the process from start to finish. I was experimenting with coco coir alone as you did in this video and found that it dried out and needed to be watered 2x a day like you showed. Another grower told me he added perlite to his coco to help retain water in the medium and now I only have to water it once a day. Have you guys done an experiment with a coco & perlite medium combo?

      Vermeculite vs Perlite. I thought one added to moisture retention, while the latter added to aeration? Those two are tricky to characterize, I just learned how to pronounce them!

    • @ClownfishDepot
      @ClownfishDepot 4 года назад +1

      Arnold Natürlich Yes you’re correct. They both have different uses. In this case a combo of coco and perlite woks much better than coco & vermiculite. A lot of growers with much much more experience than me are very successful with using coco & perlite so I just follow their lead 😊

    • @brianandlynphilippines
      @brianandlynphilippines 4 года назад +1

      @@ClownfishDepot I see, yep, loads of success stories to follow, a pioneer need not apply in this field! I mix soil & perlite, but I have blocks of coir to try out at some point and plan to mix perlite into that too. I have a fat bag of vermeculite, but I'm too green to have a use for it yet.

    • @ClownfishDepot
      @ClownfishDepot 4 года назад +1

      @@brianandlynphilippines I use fine grade Vermiculite as a top dressing on Cilantro, Swiss Chard, and Beets. It really works very well to help germination and also to get rid of the seed hulls.

    I love the sunflower sprouts! I make a huge pile on my plate and cook 4 eggs over easy, place the eggs on pile of sprouts. Let sit for a minute then cut up my eggs and sprouts and dig in! Yummy! We have chickens so my eggs are not store bought. Thanks for this video it was very helpful! Can you eat to many sunflower sprouts in a day? I ask because I can wipe out 2 trays on my own in a day. Yes trays that are the same size as the ones you use. You guys are Ah.Mazing! Thanks so much for your hard work and dedication. I have been researching microgreens for the past 4 months and have not yet started because some of the information out there seems a bit convoluted or confusing, but you guys really have a great teaching gift that lays the information out in a concise and understandable way. Because of your videos I am placing my orders (through your links obviously 😉) this weekend to get the ball rolling for our microgreens business! One question I’m not sure about if you could point me in the direction for the answer: our water supply is through a well and ran through a water softener. Do I still need to set up a filtration system to use this source or can I use it as is and just adjust the Ph? Thanks for any information you may have on this subject!

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад +3

      Thank you so much for your support!! We really appreciate you shopping through our affiliate links, that helps us continue doing this! So excited to hear how your business progresses!!
      I'd likely just use the well water since it is likely very fresh. I'd try growing with it as-is and see how your microgreens turn out. If they don't grow well on the first trys, it could be the water and then I would begin playing with pH and everything. Generally, they will do just fine with unchanged water.
      If you notice issues, get a gallon or so of a filtered water from the grocery or something and try growing two trays side by side, one with your water, one with the filtered. You can also try checking the pH on both to make sure they are fairly even. I bet your well water has a lot of great minerals in it that would help with growth though...
      Hope that helps!
