- Welcome to Tiny Leaf microgreen farm, Tyron and Cassie will show you around their small urban farm and explain the process of being a microgreen farmer along with the ups and downs of the business.
Microgreen farming is a method of growing very young vegetable greens or herbs, typically harvested when they are only a few inches tall and have just developed their first true leaves. These tiny plants are packed with flavor, nutrients, and vibrant colors, making them a popular choice for garnishes, salads, sandwiches, and a variety of culinary dishes.
Here's an overview of the key aspects of microgreen farming:
Plant Selection: Microgreens can be grown from a wide range of plant seeds, including lettuce, kale, arugula, basil, cilantro, radish, mustard, and many others. These seeds are chosen for their taste, texture, and color.
Growing Medium: Microgreens are typically grown in a soilless growing medium, such as peat moss, coconut coir, or a hydroponic system. These mediums provide essential support and moisture for the growing plants.
Containers: Microgreens are often grown in shallow containers or trays with good drainage. These can be plastic trays, seedling flats, or even recycled containers like salad clamshells.
Light: Adequate light is crucial for microgreen growth. Natural sunlight or artificial grow lights can be used. Microgreens are usually grown indoors or in a greenhouse to have better control over the light and temperature conditions.
Watering: Microgreens require regular and consistent watering. Overwatering or underwatering can harm their growth. A gentle mist or a watering can with a fine spray is often used to avoid disturbing the delicate seedlings.
Temperature and Humidity: The optimal temperature and humidity levels may vary depending on the specific microgreen variety, but generally, they thrive in moderate temperatures with good air circulation.
Harvesting: Microgreens are typically ready for harvest within 1 to 3 weeks after sowing, depending on the variety. They are harvested when the first true leaves (the second set of leaves) appear. The entire plant is cut just above the soil line.
Uses: Microgreens are popular in culinary applications as they add flavor, texture, and visual appeal to dishes. They are commonly used as garnishes, in salads, sandwiches, wraps, and as ingredients in various recipes.
Nutrition: Microgreens are known for their high nutritional value. They can contain a concentrated amount of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants compared to their fully mature counterparts.
Microgreen farming is appealing to home gardeners, chefs, and commercial growers because it allows for the cultivation of fresh, flavorful, and nutritious greens in a relatively small space and with a relatively short growing cycle. It's a sustainable and efficient way to produce fresh greens year-round.

Amazing work ! DREAMS ARE Just the beginning
thank you my friend
Wonderful to see how growing Micros takes on many different shapes and techniques to grow. I saved a lot of time with bubble washing my trays and presoaking the grow medium with hot water 12 hours prior to use. Grow mix absorbs the water over night and then it goes into a tumbler to break up the clumps and to separate larger wood pieces. Bottom watering is a must and I do that with flood trays rather than watering each tray individually. ..... Great operation! Peace and Love❤❤❤

@DonnyGreens We have watched so much of your content. Appreciate the love and comments. Thanks for all the guidance in our growing procedures and crop rotations. Stay tuned for our next video drop. We will be showcasing another very impressive hydroponic container farm operation.
Thank you for sharing your story and hard but fun work ❤ congratulations! Loving your videos please bring more content, learning a lot ❤👍🏽
thank you for your kind words xx
You guys really get after it! My son and I bought out the lights and supply's last weekend for our micro green operation............. Ended up just drinking a bunch of beer. Maybe next weekend! subscribed!
Haha its not a easy set up but we got stuck in with music and some Tequila cocktails, keep us updated on your progress buddy
Nice pod guys. I'm considering a move into micros... Need to find solutions for the plastic packaging tho, that doesnt fit at all :)
Es gibt ganz dünne Fichtenholz-Schachteln. Aber dann ist es immernoch offen. Vielleicht ist 100 % recycletes Plaste ein Gedanke.
I use robust takeout containers which the customer rinses and returns at next delivery. This way the containers are reused. I have cycled containers for over a year. Selling through stores is a different story altogether and problematic. I only sell to restaurants, in bulk 500g-1000g/variety, and directly to customers by weekly deliveries to their homes.

It's our pleasure 🙏
This was interesting. Thanks.

Super.
Tiny Leaf 2.0 coming soon XX
Hey I was looking at your compost pit and thought of an idea that might help ease the process of breaking all that down. Try using a 31 gallon steel trash can, a handheld electric mud mixer (milwaukee makes a good one), and a pro mixing paddle with a 7 inch head. It should break all that up with ease.
(If you don’t want to deal with batteries and want a more robust drill Ridgid makes a corded one that has auger handles)

Great concept in a niche but ever growing market! Love the way the business has evolved! So much potential there. Well done! And beautifully edited and filmed👌🏼
Not really a niche fresh greens is a major growing sector especially in the next 10 years
Appreciate your kind words, more content to come.
@@Floreypottery this is correct, microgreens are becoming very popular.

@@chefsprospective Just finished watching episode 2, that looks delicious. A question about your shipping container. How did you build it so that one side of the door is a normal door instead of a shipping container door? I’m thinking of making a grow room out of an old refrigerated semi trailer.
@@nomargat77 Its a modified Reefer shipping container. We had to take the engine out the back and weld a steel plate on the open side. we then modified the electric panel and added a doorway for easier entry and exit. hope that helps.
'We work mo-fri..'- i assume the trays need watering in the weekend as well? mornings and evenings? Or how does this work? Many thanks.. great content!
Correct they have to water morning a d night everyday, now they have extra hands they do shifts to do watering, check out 2.0 on our channel and see the progress they have made
Do yi7 have tour procedures for sale or for reference? I'm planning to start my microgreens business un the next minth and I would like to follow your methods. Everything looks great. Honestly impressive and inspiring!
they will be creating a channel soon and you should follow them for more information, thank you
Hi how r u .. Merry Christmas i like to ask u if u have any information or have u try to plant this before if yes please share a video ( AGARWOOD SEEDS ) THANKS
we will look into those seeds and get back to you, have a good new years
I was an exec for almost15 years. I'm excited about by micro life starting.
best of luck with your new journey
Do you really need to add weigh on those trays? Have you tried without it? In my case I did not notice difference with ot without. Great video by the way. Thanks for sharing!
for some crops its beneficial to add weight to help the new shoot remove from the seed shell itself, beetroots and coriander will benefit from this process.
The stems are more robust and the shelf life is much longer when the seedlings experience resistance. Without the weight acting on them the stems are more delicate and spindly. I grow Peas under weight and then I grow them under a black tray for a couple of days to reduce the fibrous texture. Some Micros will have too much contact with soil causing fungus issues so the weight, if used, must be removed sooner and the trays un-stacked.
AWESOME - WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR WASTE
ask www.youtube.com/@tinyleafmicrogreenfarm
Hello, I have one question. In the case of clients like restaurants you request by example, 10 units minimum? or you can sell them even single units?
check with @tinyleafmicrogreenfarm they can answer any of these questions
Great video and great insight! Mahalo- 1 Question - What type of license/certifications are required to operate your own microgreen business?
you will have to get InTouch with Tiny Leaf themselves to get that answer. I just made the documentary haha
@chefsprospective724 oh, I thought this was their video and content. Thanks for the reply.
@@TheMrInnovative no problem, ill try get the answer to that question for you

Food grade hydrogen peroxide is at what percentage? I see online it is up to 12%, I would love to know from you what you use?

I saw you don’t weigh your Microgreens in the clamshell container.. is it just volume is 4 oz or you have it down to a science knowing how much per clamshell is 4 oz??
yes a completely full clam shell equates to 4oz +-
7:31 What`s this for a powder? :) Never seen this befor in Microgreening
this is fine vermiculite, they use this to help keep the moisture while in germination stage for those crops that require more moisture than others.
Que luces son??
I seen in other videos people suppose to wear gloves when handling microgreens (food) 🤔
If you observe a glove wearing food handler, you will see that after some time the gloves come into contact with chins and noses and itchy forearms and sweaty brows, while their hands are clean. Microgreen farmers hands are constantly washed as are the knives and other tools. This is much cleaner and sanitary than gloves, but gloves do make for better safety theatre.

Do u re use da soil???
they turn it into compost to use in the garden for edible flowers
@@chefsprospective u mean like compost tea or u r just conditioning da soil for next round of edibles if so do u test da soil??
Why prospective and not perspective?
the future of food and small food business's is the idea thinking about the future
excellent video but you should wear gloves...
Noted
yes
