    I really like this one. Gets your feet tappin' and soul lifted. I love the way Jimmy's solo comes in, just owns that section of the song. Bonham's strong kick drum throughout. Robert's wry double-entendre lyrics about, well, HEADing "south." ANd JPJ on the keyboards is always a treat, and often a marvel.

    All of the songs are good on this album. The sheer talent of this collective would ensure this even if full-member participation in the writing process was present throughout. Few bands throughout the history of the charts are ever allowed to stray outside of the preconceptions of their fan base. Fewer do it successfully. Like the Beatles, Led Zep leverages poetic license and did so successfully despite the critics. It's a softer Led Zep this time around, true. It's not the album you would put on if you wanted to stomp about like the good old days, but it has great tracks and is more reflective. It's the end of a hard day. Relax a little and put on 'In Through The Out Door'.

    So many unknowns about this song! Is there some meaning in the misspelled title? Is it about Flying down to Suarez Uruguay? Is it a play on the word Soiree (french for "party")? Either way, all we know is it's one of only 2 LZ songs that Jimmy didn't write, and that it's a fun, lively dance song.
    The most likely scenario: The song was recorded in Nov-Dec 1978. The Miss World pageant was held in London on November 16 1978. The winner was Silvana Suarez from Argentina. Robert would have watched Suarez "walk that sweet walk" and "talk that sweet talk" during the competition.
    I like to believe the song is Robert imagining flying off to South America for sexual exploits with the newly crowned Miss World (rhythm, shaking, flying down, sweet con-carne, helpin' hands, raving madness...). Losing all anxiety as his feet land on the ground, both literally and figuratively.

    In Through the Out Door is a very good album. It just suffered at the time of being different from their other albums. In hindsight it holds up very well and sounds fresh even today. It was a glimpse of what Zep might have become in the future.

      With all the crap that came out in the 80's, Zeppelin music would've been a relief with the release of each new album, but sadly that didn't happen, although Robert and Jimmy released some good music, it certainly wasn't Zeppelin

    I remember when this album was released in 79. Was disappointed it wasn’t heavier. But in 79 there wasn’t a whole lot of great music coming out. So we were appreciative that any band was releasing anything halfway decent. 43 years later I have a better appreciation for this album. It’s quite good.

      And I think the issue is there is no absolutely standout song. Even Presence had a couple worth the price of the album. Fool In The Rain probably gets closest. But after a string of legendary albums, simply releasing a great album is going to be a let down

    Great frenetic, boogie-woogie piano and sharp, gritty guitar makes the whole thing sound like a jump-jive party song - so much fun! Although, to my knowledge, "suarez" is not a Spanish word for "party", however it is a common surname in some Spanish speaking countries, as well as a place name in Columbia, I believe, and I think it's a place name in a couple of other counties as well.

    In Through the Out Door was a very experimental album for the band. Robert Plant is well known for not resting on his laurels and is constantly pushing the envelope. Interesting thing about this album is it was the only one that was not recorded as a unit. JPJ and Plant would show up during the day and lay down their tracks and Page and Bonham would turn up at night to record theirs. You can almost sense the disjointed atmosphere at the time. This album has a darkness that, knowing that Bonham died a little over a year after it's release, seems foreboding.

    Plant said this song reminded him of "about five o'clock in the morning in New Orleans, wishing you'd got the strength you had at 9am."
    This is one of only two songs in the entire Zeppelin catalog that Jimmy Page did not get any writing credit. This is mostly due to the fact that Jimmy was not showing up to recording sessions, and JPJ and Robert were left to do something while they had recording time booked.

    I remember the biggest complaint from people that I knew at the time was the album just wasn't heavy enough. Which I think was a direct result of Page not being very involved in the writing process. If this hadn't been their last album, if they had released a much heavier album after this one, I think it would be more appreciated over time.

      I agree. If this came out between say, Houses & Physical Graffiti, I feel it would probably be viewed in a similar light as LZ III.

  • @davidcarter4247
    @davidcarter4247 2 года назад +2

    To me, In Through the Out Door picked up where Physical Graffiti left off. It had more of the feel that marked the band's albums before Presence. The problem with that album was the band had scattered to escape excessive taxation that had seen many of Britain's most talented become tax exiles. By 1978 and with the Labor government heading for defeat the next year the band was able to return home to work together to create this album. The songs were better developed, more subtle in their arrangements than Presence which was weighted too heavily to where Page's brain was at the time. The true follow-up to Presence was the album Page did with David Coverdale. It had all those sensational Page riffs but was otherwise emotionally sterile.

    I don't know if you personally sense it or not but the "spirit" and "magic" of Led Zeppelin left them after Physical Graffiti. It would appear here and there but never to the same degree.

    • @tektoniks_architects
      @tektoniks_architects 2 года назад +5

      I think you're right....and the reason is Jimmy Page. Zeppelin's usual recording process is that Jimmy would retreat to his home studio and create concepts and base tracks, and the band would convene in the studio and listen to what Jimmy came up with. Then they'd morph and add to it, and jam. Jimmy was responsible for about 90% of the music behind Led Zeppelin, and he was the clear leader of the band, from a vision point of view. After Physical Graffiti, Jimmy started losing control, and started to drift aimlessly. He held it together on Presence, but by In Through The Out Door, Jimmy started to skip recording sessions entirely. The loss of magic and spark you refer to is Jimmy Page losing his grip.

Jimmy was lucky that, because of friends and colleagues who pushed him to get out there again (The Firm) he came back to himself and did some great work. in through the out door is an amazing album but I have always thought that... depending on who you ask.....eclectic is just a nice word for confusing and or not cohesive. every track is an experiment in playing with a different genre so this is a hard album to read as a single work of art. but all the songs are perfect.
