    Zeppelin in the 70’s was like The Beatles in the 60’s….changing it up with each album, genre busting, incredibly diverse, and played a similar role in shaking up popular music. We have the historical perspective now and seeing what they did. Having lived through it……hell, it was just fantastic music everywhere!

    When played live the piano section would be extended to 20+ mins and it could go anywhere, Classical Blues Jazz, wherever JPJ'S hands led him. Then the jam would begin with Bonzo and then Jimmy all going for it!! Incredible .... and different every performance.

    Armies, or sailors in the navy, would stipulate, “No quarter given, no quarter taken.” Your quarters on a ship were your accommodations including your food rations. Saying no quarter in war meant that they were taking no prisoners and they did not expect to be spared. They intended to fight to the death and were going to put you to death if you were captured after the battle.

This song and Babe Im gonna Leave you taught me all I ever needed to know. They know what they are doing beyond mind. You can't do what they do and be a normal human being, they are something else.

    Robert used his voice as another instrument…….he always makes a joke of it, saying that if he didn’t he would have been just standing around allot because of all the extended solos “you could have taken a course in Serbo-Croat” at the side of the stage during some of those solos, he quipped in one interview. But he did create with his voice another layer to the mix, and this song is a perfect example.

    This is full of Robert's mythical, mystical lyrics. The "winds of Thor" are not about Thor, the Norse god but the mountain range in Canada. This would become Jonesy's showpiece and could often last 20 minutes or more. The live would have the bits of jazz rock, classical, and anything else Mr. Jones cared to throw into it - occasionally, including a bit of Nut Rocker - a crazy, sped-up version of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker ballet originated by American instrumental ensemble B. Bumble and the Stingers. For a live version, DO NOT use the one from MSG because it's not Jonesy's full filmed performance. In the film, this was Jonesy's "fantasy", but the online links has bits and pieces of other parts of the film edited together - it makes no sense. Here's a link for the performance from Earls Court. ruclips.net/video/mGthaP2BVUI/видео.html

    Woo-Hoo! For me, the best song on that album, it gave us shivers when we first heard it way back in 1973 and for many years made Houses of the Holy a must listen to regularly album. They greatly expanded this song in concert with John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page getting lengthy solos. Try the live version from MSG 1973, it is amazing! You can find other live versions on-line that are over 20 minutes long.

    If you become a fan of Led Zep live performances and research ALL of their live shows, you'll find that this song had the widest variety of live versions....Jones and Page would take the middle section into completely different places from one night to the next. The 1973 MSG version is certainly great, but far from the longest or most elaborate version. A great studio version, but one of several from their catalog that was almost always greater live. It does have JPJ’s fantasy sequence in it….personally I’d rather just watch them play, but I know why the fantasy sequences are there, so…..By the way, there’s is NOTHING bluesy about this song…..I don’t know how some of those sites can acatagiruze it as such…..they’re just throwing genre names around. This is totally psychedelic, with lyrics by Robert based on folklore and myth…….”The Winds of Thor”.

    Great! This song is phenomenal live at MSG, the original version. The remastered had the solo changed and its not as cool.

    Tool's version of this is the best cover song ever created.

    @Salvo
    If you liked the haunting, Halloween-ish ambience of this song, then I can direct you to a few others with a similar "feel":
    Kings and Queens by Aerosmith
    Planet Caravan by Black Sabbath ( Panteras cover is excellent as well.)
    One of these Days by Pink Floyd
