It's easier for me to think of a Zeppelin song I don't like. There are about 3-4 songs I really don't like. Down by the Seaside and D'yer Mak'er come to mind. Also, there are a few songs I really liked until the radio played them to death.

Yes to this all day long! I think mostly this is because not only is every song so good but they are also so different it's hard to rank or compare them to each other. I have a long and ever changing list myself.

Led Zeppelin was pretty much defining new (and old) genres as they progressed. Almost everything they did either hadn't been done before, or hadn't been done the way they did it before. This also carried over to the business side of things, as they were the first rock band to dictate the terms to the promoters. The promoters had no choice as Led Zeppelin was the biggest live band in the world for many years.

they did punk in the 60s, they made rock, blues, hard rock and metal, folk rock, country, reggae, pop, and progressive rock (sometimes mixing all those genres in one album). That's why they're the greatest rock band ever! They were so versatile and so creative other bands sound pale and weak in comparison, and still had their own unique sound.
They have a few proggy epics, this song, Stairway to heaven, The Rain Song, No Quarter, The Battle Of Evermore, Kashmir, Achilles Last Stand (in a way it's really proggy for a hard rock song) and Carouselambra. Other prog bands would dream to be able to pull such masterpieces off.

I was 9 years old when this album came out. The first time I heard this particular track was the day I realized how impactful drums can be to a song. It's throughout the entire album and Bonham's career for that matter, but something about the way he approaches this one really grabbed me. One of the main influences to me bugging my dad for a drum set, which I finally got at 12 years old and never looked back! I don't know what kind of powers of fate there may be, but these 4 guys were the perfect chemistry.

This is one of the three songs in the Zeppelin catalog where Jimmy bowed the guitar - the others being Dazed and Confused and How Many More Times from the first album. Jimmy has said in interviews that this is his favorite song from this album. In terms of creativity and popularity, 1975 is the peak of Led Zeppelin. Although brilliant music preceded and followed Physical Graffiti, the 1975 tour and their album sales during this year were the high point of the band. When Physical Graffiti was released, that album plus all five of the previous LZ albums rose to the top 200 album chart at the same time - an unprecedented feat to that point in time for any band. In particular, the 5 nights they played at Earl's Court were a milestone in rock history. Renowned LZ biographer Dave Lewis has a great book documenting that set of shows, called: "Five Glorious Nights."

I grew up with Led Zep and Deep Purple since I was a teenager in the early '70's, to us they were just heavy rock bands with hard rock, blues rock and folk rock as a refiner title. The later heavy metal crew glommed onto hard rock bands like Led Zep and Deep Purple like a lightweight freeloader but stripped the early sound of nearly all blues rock, classical, country blues and folk influences.
They just got louder with 'look at me' shredding guitars by self absorbed prima dona's with little understanding or patience for the subtleties of things like respectful homage, individuality and troutine collaborative band members music making.
All nuance of familiar light and shade, heavy and in many cases delicate ensemble orchestration along with referential dancable nostalgic and memorable riffs with a wide variety of genres within their catalog and room to breath on every track, were exchanged in heavy metal for claustrophobic loud and dark alienating monochromatic demons and skulls and not much else.
Heavy metal pretended to be the progeny of heavy blues rock but bore scarce similarities to it. In truth heavy metal is tinsel compared to the early '70's granite to the core rock.
Something that is often overlooked by many is that nearly all early '70's rock band members were classically trained individuals who consciously developed an ear for a wide range of musical styles and tastes that fed directly into their songwriting and instrumentation.
John Bonham used swing drum techniques from the '40's and '50's routinely, Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord of Deep Purple regularly adapted Bach's classical chord arrangements in many recordings
It's safe to say that the same could not be said of heavy metal bands, they believe it was a waste of time. ''3 chords is all we need, so let's get rich.''
I've always believed disco, heavy metal and punk were the industry tools who sought to bring down what they snidely called large venue 'dinosaur rock' of the early to mid 1970's. Hard rock crushes heavy metal.

Back in the seventies 96 Rock in Atlanta on Monday nights would play the newest albums in full at midnight. I was 15 years old and had to go to school the next morning so I put a blank 8-Track tape in the recorder, put my headphones on and turned out the lights. Somewhere during the recording I fell a sleep. The next day all the kids at school kept asking me what the new Led Zeppelin album sounded like and would I say "It sounds like middle eastern music" !!! They all laughed and thought I was joking. None of them believed me. When I got home I played the tape and heard Kashmir and In the Light so I knew that I didn't dream them. It wasn't until about a week or so later that I found out what the names of the songs were.

The third epic on that album and pretty much overshadowed by the other 2 but a heck of a song in its own right. Can't wait until you hear the Wanton Song, a banger that could have been comfortable on Led Zeppelin's II, one of their heaviest tunes. Enjoy! 🎸

They're often described, incorrectly as heavy metal, as they were such a huge influence on that emerging genre. Zeppelin themselves despise being described as metal. However they are part of the "Unholy Trinity" of heavy rock, alongside Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. Collectively these 3 bands are also known as the "Godfathers of Heavy Metal" as their influence on the genre was absolutely enormous. None of the 3 were really metal themselves, though all came close at times. Especially Sabbath. Zeppelin, in the 70s, were always defined as 'heavy rock'. Though within that label, they combined heavy rock with blues rock, hard rock and folk rock and the occasional other genre for good measure. Even a little proto-metal.
As for 'In the Light', I don't know why it isn't recommended more often. Alongside Kashmir, it's the band's favourite track. It's definitely one of my favourite Zeppelin tracks. I always recommend it but it seems to be continually overlooked, for some strange reason. In my eyes, it's an absolute masterpiece, even by Zeppelin's ridiculously high standards! :)

I had a feeling you would like this one. So great! This album is so diverse! They have trouble identifying Zeppelin, they always have. They proclaimed that they weren’t a rock band after the third album. That really pissed off Jimmy Page.

This song had no genre category...the only way to describe it is that it is pure artistic genius. I get goosebumps and even tears when I listen to this absolutely gorgeous masterpiece! I love your first impression reaction to this...I've been listening to this for 40 years and it still moves me.

Zeppelin's best song. My friends showed me them 12 or so years ago but no one ever seemed to care or mention this song. I found it myself and knew immediately how special it was. It's got their trippiest beginning, heaviest riff, followed by their most beautiful, followed by a perfect ending. It sums up everything that was good about them.

I love this intro as well. It's a bit like the beginning of Pink Floyd's: "Echoes" and "Sheep", with all the delayed repeating notes and background whine, but stronger here in tone.
