I have to agree with James Hetfield that Zep is the greatest rock band of all time. So eclectic with a huge catalogue of great songs.

When I was in my teens (mid to late 70's)and had this album (playing it too loud down in the basement), this song was on. I stepped out of the family room to run up and grab something to drink or something, and caught my Mom (who was loading the washing machine) dancing to this song as she sorted through the clothes. I thought that was pretty cool. My Mom was born in 1917. She was a cool lady though and never had a problem with my Rock & Roll inclinations.

You did your homework well! That's exactly the way you pronounce it. Having lived this record release at the time, this track was hugely popular in the mainstream, and made Led Zeppelin fans out of many people that didn't listen to them before. Clearly Zep was having fun, and being playful..... stretching their wings a little.

The remastering was done by Jimmy Page. The difference between the 2 albums is that 'Mothership' is not an original album but a compilation album of their 'best songs'. Though how anyone can choose best LZ songs I don't know. It has to be very subjective. The story in D'yer Mak'er follows the story in the joke. The guy is lamenting the leaving of his love and wondering why she has to go. He tries to persuade her not to go.

You said something very insightful! Expectations play a huge part in people’s reception of something. I’ll tell you a story: We went to the drive in theater one night and the second feature was Battleship. That’s right, Battleship. The feature film based on the board game. Remember it? No. Well I had zero expectations for that movie and it met all of them. I enjoyed that movie more than The Guardians Of Whichever Volume was the first movie. If you listen with an open mind you will enjoy Physical Graffiti. The next album has an homage to Stevie Wonder, middle eastern influence, more acoustic folk, heavy blues, hard rock, very experimental stuff-and yes, Led Zeppelin’s disco song.

Peter Grant, wouldn’t let American critics Rolling Stone critics & producers let alone any critics interfere in the creativity of Led Zeppelin..the critic‘s were a bit upset.. they wouldn’t make any singles and couldn’t control the band how long the music should and shouldn’t last very smart of the late Peter Grant & Led Zeppelin

Sal, depending on your level of interest, there is a musician who is doing deep reviews of all the Zep albums. Not playing any tracks, but talking about the songs. Excellent. He just released his review of Physical Graffiti and you might be interested in watching it before you dive in to that album, as I know you like to do a little research. He has also done the first five albums as well. You might be interested in his take on Houses of the Holy. Here’s the link ruclips.net/video/asRxFxUsswE/видео.html

:) Like most artists.......Led Zeppelin wanted to branch out into other genres like Reggae and Funk Blues and Jazz........and put their uniqueness into those songs of that genre. I have the vinyl to this album...and yes The Crunge is my fav along with The Rain Song.😁

I think part of the issue back when this album was released was that American fans especially weren’t in on the joke. This was Zeppelin being playful and that’s not what most casual fans were looking for from their rock gods. I think many thought this song was “beneath them”. It’s them having a bit of a lark in the studio….many fans wanted them always to remain on Mt Olympus, as rock “gods” should.

Take a great rock band who are (like everyone else at the time) listening to reggae, mix with a love for 50's rock (oh uh uh oh oh) stir in a wacky British sense of humor bake in the studio and there you have it. Some of these 'off the wall' pieces take the heaviness out of Zeppelin who never were a heavy metal band!

Page usually remasters tracks to improve the sound quality as technology improves. The original cds of most Zep tunes are really low In Volume for one. I know when I was young the big hits off this album were this and The Ocean. Physical is so different than any album you have heard yet. Sort of funky, grundgy bluesy. And even folksy at times. Pages guitar is often dirty and or "Bendy and windy" sounding at times. Plants voice often has a rasp to it that just makes it sound more interesting. But many feel Bonham's drumming steals the show. Many people that are not just casual Zep fans feel this is their best albaum. I say casual because many of the songs grow on you the more you hear them. The first album to me is one masterpiece after another. The first two songs less so because of how good the others are in comparison. Oh, listen to the words on Custard Pie. This might be the dirtiest song they ever made if your paying attention to the lyrics.
